WINTER 2020
BRANDT LIFE luxury kitchen living
WIN A WOLF BLENDER & TOASTER WORTH £1,000! 1
2
Welcome to the winter issue of Brandt Life. I don’t usually write an introduction for this magazine but felt for this particular issue it was pertinent to do so. As a retail business, we have had to endure two government enforced lockdowns and despite this, the business has grown to a point where we have had to recruit extra staff. We’ve also launched two dedicated magazines, one for our trade business (Brandt Projects) and of course this one, Brandt Life, which is now on issue 3. Our feeling is that the magazines allow us to give our customers added value whilst being able to, in effect, take our showrooms and lifestyle expertise to you when you are in lockdown or just relaxing at home or on holiday. A special thanks must go to our supporters, especially leading kitchen and domestic appliance brands Miele and Sub-Zero & Wolf for their generosity in gifting some incredible competition prizes to us. Talking of competitions by the way, turn to page 17 of this magazine for an opportunity to win a Wolf Gourmet blender and toaster, the two prizes have a combined retail value of an amazing £1,000! Finally, I wish all of our readers a safe, healthy and prosperous 2021 for them and all of their loved ones. Please look out for each other and let’s hope some normality returns before too long.

BLACK BEAUTY This contemporary, ultra-slick and precision engineered kitchen living space provides industrialstyle glamour in the modern home.
The main feature furniture is Black Oak, which has a rich texture and works in perfect harmony with the striking Marquina surfaces: recognized as one of the most beautiful marbles found in nature thanks to its deep black foundation and distinct white veins. The client brief required an emphasis on family life and entertaining and therefore the central island unit was introduced to provide a dedicated space in the kitchen to cook, dine and socialize with family and friends, all supported by a wall of integrated storage that is highly practical yet discreet in nature. Designed to maximize storage space and utility in the kitchen, the linear wash zone is almost invisible to the eye but features an integral kitchen sink in anthracite with matt black taps and smoky glass splashback for tonal variety. Either side, a bank of twin-set ovens by Siemens ensure appliances are conveniently placed within easy reach of the user. The run of top units are broken up by special feature cubbyholes which are backed in the same smoky glass and are designed with subtle downlights to display a range of home essentials like wine glasses, recipe books and fresh herbs to name a few. PREPARING THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS DINNER TABLE The lead up to Christmas can be stressful, take a read of our Christmas styling guide to create the perfect Christmas dining table and tick one job of your list.
Gloria Sanchez Puerta, Tailored Living Interiors
Firstly, have a clear colour palette in advance of purchase as there is a wealth of Christmas decorations on offer and so it is easy to become overwhelmed. This year we are loving a Christmas classic; shades of olive green with accents of gold. Don’t be scared to use gold, it is a great colour to incorporate, it’s festive but neutral and makes a beautiful statement whilst remaining versatile. Lighting is a fantastic way to create some atmosphere around the table. By using an assortment of candles, you can create pockets of light in the centre of the table, highlighting all the delicious dishes. We prefer to use candlesticks with varying heights to create different levels and to avoid looking too over crowded. If you’re not keen on using real candles there are some great LED alternatives on offer. No table is complete without some flowers to enhance your colour scheme, we often use faux flowers at Tailored Living as there is an ever-growing variety to choose from and with an added bonus that you are able to keep them all year round! This is also a great way of introducing more textures and colour to the table. Last but by no means least, the dining set. This is can be an investment piece but if you’re in the need of just a
refresh some new napkin rings could do the trick. Coordinate with serviettes and this will make the perfect pairing. No room left for place holders? Some beautifully calligraphic place holders can be placed on top for that exquisite finishing touch. 2020 has proven to be a tough year for everyone in so many ways so Christmas gives us an opportunity to get a minibreak from all the problems out there
and indulge ourselves. Subsequently, we can’t wait to start styling our Christmas décor at Tailored Living we hope this feature offers you some handy tips and tricks. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas from the Tailored Living team. Gloria and Davide. www.tailored-living.co.uk

PROFILE
DESIGNER PROFILE Deiric Martin In the winter issue of Brandt Life we feature Kitchen Designer, Deiric, who works out of Brandt Design’s Finchley Road, West Hampstead showroom.
How long have you been a designer?
What has been your most difficult challenge, design wise?
Name one product for the kitchen that impresses you most?
After gaining a qualification in Engineering Draughting, I began my career as a draughtsman for a contact lens manufacturer which gave me a great grounding in the problemsolving aspects of design. I have been involved with different aspects of design and design-thinking for several years.
Each design creates its own challenges, however recently I was asked to design a living space in the low-ceiling basement of a gothic-style home. The brief was to incorporate dark colours with plenty of textured surfaces within the design, but to avoid it resembling a dungeon!
I love the Bora hob. It is the neatest solution to island or peninsula ventilation and they produce products that look great also.
What initially attracted you to kitchen design I have always had an interest in design and trying to understand why things are put together the way they are. Space planning is a passion of mine, with a leaning towards the ingenuity of small space design and multifunctional spaces. Over time this led naturally towards kitchen design. What is it about kitchen design that excites you? The kitchen has transformed over the years from being a purely functional room, removed from the rest of the house, to being an integral living area. Every space is unique and I love being able to take a list of requirements and develop them into the home design.
How would you describe your ‘design style?’ I don’t have a particular leaning towards contemporary or traditional styles. My design style tends to involve using a balance of colours and textures to incorporate a kitchen space that is easy to live with and love.
“Don’t wait for the right time to chase your ambitions” What advice would you give to anyone considering planning a new kitchen? Don’t stress about the vast array of choices available. A skilled kitchen designer can help guide you through them by finding out as much as they can about you and your family’s specific requirements.
A little more about you beyond work … What would be a perfect weekend for you? I love to explore and I enjoy taking my children to new places and so a perfect weekend is having a nice relaxed pace where we can enjoy the time to spend doing new things. Do you like a particular sport or hobby? I like to run a few times a week if my schedule allows and I am in the middle of finishing off a degree with the Open University. Each year I look forward to the London Design Festival and attend events there when I can. Career and life ambitions? Many people dream of retiring in the sun somewhere by the sea. I
➝
already live by the sea so my most immediate ambition is to get the extension on my house completed! It involves reconfiguring and maximising the space within a relatively small footprint so the design has taken some time to work out. Finally, what has been the best bit of advice you have ever received? Don’t wait for the right time to chase your ambitions.

WHAT’S NEW
NEWS GLOBAL DOMESTIC APPLIANCE SUPPLY PROBLEMS MEANS ORDERING EARLY IS ESSENTIAL TO AVOID DELAYING YOUR COMPLETED KITCHEN! “If you don’t want to wait for your new kitchen then you would be advised to order your kitchen as soon as possible!” These are the telling words of Julia Steadman, Head of Operations at Brandt Design, she continued, “Frustratingly, factory closures during the lockdown earlier in the year, combined with a huge surge in demand from homeowners has resulted in the global kitchen appliance market suffering
a severe shortage of stock, which means order can be as much as 10 weeks to fulfil!” Consumers who have been locked down in their homes, combined with the difficulty in travelling these days, has resulted in homeowners forgoing holidays and instead, improve their homes.
for the appliances to be delivered before the project can be completed.
This upward surge in demand has meant that those purchasing a new kitchen are having to wait
Therefore, if you would rather not wait for your dream kitchen, then it’s essential to order early.

Q&A
QUESTIONS & ADVICE In each issue of Brandt Life we want to bring you up to date with the latest product information plus tips and advice which we hope will be informative and complement your lifestyle.
What are the basic differences between a ceramic and induction hob? Felix Evans, London
Ceramic uses electrical elements to heat the hob’s glass surface whereas an induction hob only heats the saucepan or pan as they use a magnetic field to generate heat. Induction is quicker and more responsive than ceramic.
Wolf-cooking | Induction Cooktop
It can be more expensive if you opt for induction as you may require new pots and pans as the base needs to be manufactured from ferrous metal. However, any additional outlay can be offset somewhat by the fact that they are cheaper to use. In short, ceramic is a little cheaper but induction is cheaper to run and offers greater control which will appeal to those who enjoy cooking. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, my husband has been working from home and he and his business partner have now decided that they no longer need a rented office. We are therefore going to permanently convert a room as a dedicated home office but require a vast amount of storage and quite frankly, the standalone filing cabinets you see in major retailers won’t suffice. Any recommendations please?? Gaby Robertson, Hertfordshire
It sounds to us like you would benefit from something tailored as there is always a compromise when creating an ‘off-the-shelf ’ home office. Brandt Design undertakes a plan, design, fit service that would be ideal for your husband’s business. A bespoke study would ensure that there’s not only enough storage but everything will be stored and positioned exactly where required Miele | Ceramic Hob

RECIPE
SLOW ROAST BEEF TENDERLOIN There’s nothing that wows dinner party guests like beef tenderloin, but you may never have prepared it for fear of not getting it right. Take heart: the Slow Roast Mode of the Wolf convection steam oven attends to all the details, so success is assured.
tasty Ingredients | Serves 6 5 pounds Beef Tenderloin 2 tbsp Extra-virgin olive oil 1 Bunch Parsley 1 Bunch Cilantro 1 Large Shallot 2 Cloves Garlic 1 tbsp Coriander 1 Bay leaf 1 tbsp Black Pepper ¼ cup Rape seed Oil 2 tbsp Salt 2 Springs of Rosemary ½ tsp Red Pepper Flakes
Method Before You Start A beef tenderloin between 3 and 6 pounds works best. If desired, though not necessary, the beef tenderloin could be seared on the grill or in a large roasting pan for added color and flavor. It is important to note that while the Slow Roast Mode will allow you to delay the start of the process for as long as you like, food safety can become an issue. It is not recommended to delay the start of the process more than a few hours. Preparation 1. Combine all ingredients for the rub in a food processor and puree into a paste. 2. Spread rub on all sides of the tenderloin. The meat can be cooked right away, or it can be marinated overnight, covered with plastic wrap. 3. Place the roast on the solid pan. Insert the temperature probe into the center of the thickest part of the meat, taking care to fully cover the entire metal shaft of the probe. Plug the probe into the oven. 4. Select More Slow Roast Sear Beef and choose Tenderloin. We recommend 3 hours and 137°F for the probe temperature. 5. After the beef tenderloin is done, you can optionally sear the tenderloin on a grill for even deeper flavor. Recipe supplied by Sub-Zero Wolf, more info at: Slow Roast Beef Tenderloin
