For a long time Anne-Marie would smile at me somewhat incredulously as I collected things for a non existing ranch.

One of the principal items I found was an American “ Round Oak ” cast iron stove dated from the 1880’s. This stove stood in our bathroom in San Miguel de Allende for nearly 10 years, unconnected as a static sculpture. Today this stove warms our bedroom and heats the flooring of our boys loft located above us. Even today I find it hard to believe that our ranch house is a reality , a lucky closing of one of life’s circles in my case.

In conjunction to this near obsession my design work always tended to be centered around saddle leather, oak and raw lacquered iron which always reminds me of the textures of having grown up on working cattle ranches in Mexico where I would spend vacations with my father.

In 2012 when my father died I felt a strong need to return to the Northern Mexican state of Sonora where we once had a ranch high in the Sierra Madre Occidental. A late night conversation with my aunt, Alejandra Redo, lead to an invitation to build a casita on her ranch which was adjacent to our old ranch. I had not been there for nearly 30 years, indeed the last time I was there I was the same age as our oldest son is now.

However I have never forgotten those lascapes and saturated sunlight and feel at truly home whenever we are there.

finished.

Because of the extreme weather much maintenance is needed.

It also doesn’t help that nearby Bisbee is a treasure trove of cool American antiques and the random Saltillo sarape. Mixed with family pieces and Casamidy designs our home is an intentional repository for family memories.
