Weather or Whether?
El tiempo, sí o si.
“Yo, Weather Dude,” came the salutation one morning at the old Mega supermarket. It came from the late Anado McLaughlin, noted San Miguel de Allende artist. First time for that moniker. I’ve been observing and writing about weather (40 years) since high school and did an almanac for my daily newspaper. The Insiders’ News publisher suggested a column using the play on words. We’ll touch on weather and whether to take up or not, diversions in San Miguel. My streaming station (15 years in SMA) has provided local weather information. I wrote for local papers and post reports on Facebook.

Interview with Gina Giampaoli and John Alderton Q:How did growing up in San Miguel de Allende, with a Mexican Mom, and American Dad, affect your current world view? A:I see the world with an open mind. I’m not biased and tend to see and appreciate the different points of view of those involved in an argument or a conflict. I believe there’s not just one “right” side to any situation, and that there are usually more perspectives to be acknowledged. To me, in order to come to an understanding of any kind of disagreement, it is very important to take into consideration everyone’s background, history, belief system, and viewpoint before making assumptions or taking sides. Weather links: You can find stations on weatherunderground. com and ambientweather.net When writing about weather I use sayings or dichos. My favorite is “Febrero loco y marzo otro poco.” Similar to “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” Generally, when visiting San Miguel, people find the weather agreeable - save the rainy season’s brief, but strong showers; and cold days in December and January. Our annual flower show (“Candelaria”) in February is a harbinger of Spring. So ‘whether or not’… on a fair morning or evening, decide what to do in our historic city? Cultural events, music or a happening food scene? To drive or not to dive? Outside Centro places like Luna de Queso or Tacos Don Lupe can be found by car. Buses, taxis, Uber and “PickMeUp” plentiful. Parking difficult.

Theater. Smaller theaters are also open. The Playreaders group offers readings. For movie goers try Cinemex at the Luciernaga Mall or Cine Bacco, a pocket theater in Centro. The Boleto City office in Mercado Sano and website (boletocity. com) are good sources. Tour guide or self explore? Renown guide Arturo Morales and daughter Isabel More have offerings or Emma Salazar’s “Follow Me Tours.” The Bibloteca offers walking tours. Guides also offer tours of Pyramid at Cañada de la Virgen in campo. ¿Conducir o no? Autobuses, taxis, y Uber abundan.
Burger or tacos? Birdie’s Burgers, Pork Belly, and Grandpop & Son, all delicious. In evening on street corners in Centro, taco stands offer delicious tacos and also Tacos Don Lupe on the road to Celaya and on weekends Tacos Don Felix in San Rafael. Comfort food or classic? La Frontera for comfort food and The Restaurant for soup to nuts. (For foodies news check out Kat Sparks’ Buen Provecho column on page 18). Music or theater? Karaoke by Annie or Doug Robinson’s jazz inspired music have varied offerings. ation and for acting. Q: Your concern for the community? A: Water and overdevelopment.
Q: Where did you meet your husband John Alderton, (how?) A: I moved to Cumberland, MD after college. I wanted to know what it was like to live and work in the U.S., experience “my other half ”, and improve my English. I’ve always been involved in dance and theater since I was a kid, so I joined the local theater community. I was cast as Anita in West Side Story, and John saw me perform “I want to Live in America” in a street staging. He asked a friend that we both knew to introduce us; our friend invited us –separately- to his 50th birthday party and that’s where we met. We found it to be serendipitous that he had attended MICA in Baltimore, the same art school where my father once taught, and that they were both from Maryland. You can see John’s work on FB: John Alderton - Fine Artist, and my father’s by searching Jim Giampaoli – Fine Arts.
Q: What you still love about SMA? A: The church bells, and birds singing in the mornings and at dusk.
Q: How did you together decided to set down or keep roots in SMA? A: I missed home, I missed my parents and I wanted to be here for them. John is an artist, he loves my family, he loves Mexico, and we knew he’d be able to continue creating his work here. We drove down with the 4 cats we had at the time. Q: Tell us about your passions. A: I love music, performing, singing and teaching. I’ve taught ESL, Spanish and Intercultural Communication for many years, but I’ve had to put teaching aside to make room for my job with the 24 Hour Associ4
Q: What you ‘miss’ about your ‘childhood’ SMA? A: The quiet small town feeling. Q: Is there something I forgot to ask that you want to talk about? A: I have a BA in Corporate Communication from ITESM, Qro., and a M.Ed from Frostburg State University. I’m the Executive Secretary of the 24 Hour Association. I’m currently co-producing and will be performing in Roads and Roles of Comedy II at Teatro Santa Ana.
P:¿Dónde conociste a tu marido, John Alderton?
VINO Y
Vida
The Mexican Highlands, also known as the “Altiplano’ is an almost flat, large portion of semi-desert land, elevated between 6000 and 7000 feet above sea level, with very gentle changes in slope. The region extends from Queretaro in the southern part to San Luis Potosí and Coahuila in the northern extreme. San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo wineries are located in the southern third of the area. Even though in the last century this whole Altiplano region produced a vast variety of other agricultural products instead of wine, wineries are now thriving here; some as tourist attractions or wedding spots, and some as a residential lifestyle option for those who love to live in the middle of grape production and enjoy those benefits. During the first stages of my wine studies to become a sommelier, I had the chance to sip samples from the greatest wine regions in the world, as well as studying their geography, climate and history. For example, what’s going on with their traditions, their food and the weather they’re under throughout the year. The more I tasted, the more curious I was. With time and lots of reading, I understood that great wines are unique, and uniqueness is given by great wine regions.
climate, among the several factors that compose the so-called ‘terroir’ concept. Therefore, in my opinion, uniqueness equals connectedness, and this is a concept hard to explain, but easy to taste. But, is the Mexican Highland giving connectedness to our local wines? Where true wine lovers, the ones who grow vines and make wine from the love of earth, and their passion for wines prevail? To begin, a few wineries in the Highlands come to my mind as precedent of some wines that I’ve tasted and found somehow unique: Viñedo Los Arcángeles, Dos Búhos and Cava Garambullo are the very first that come to my mind. However, I’m sure in the future more local wines will cross my path while looking for that connectedness of evocative, unique wines. I will be sharing my experience, opinion and thoughts about wine, and the local wine scene: winery tours, special meals, activities and where to purchase locally produced wines in this Vino y Vida (wine and life) column. Encountered Glamping? The term ‘Glamping’, the idea of luxurious tent living, hit the Oxford English Dictionary as late as 2016, but the concept has been around since the ancient days of the Pharaohs’ lifestyles to safaris in Africa becoming popular dating back to the 1920’s. Worldwide it is becoming a popular form for getting out into nature in the utmost style and comfort. San Miguel de Allende offers the experience in various ways. But just twenty minutes outside of town, experience glamping at the well-established Nomada Glampaing in ‘teepee’ style platforms with beds and baths. Also, for fun enjoy a restaurant, hot spring pools, campfire area, wine tasting, concierge services and daytours. What a way to have a sleep over and celebrate birth6
days, anniversaries and just being present to nature. While out in the countryside you can fully appreciate the beautiful sunsets, starry nights and glorious dawns. It’s a fine choice for local residents or travelers to also understand sustainability and eco-friendly practices in a unique blend of nature and wellbeing while acquiring knowledge about the local environment and deep history of the San Miguel de Allende area.

ART ON the Streets ARTE EN las Calles Efrain Gonzalez, artist and language teacher, loves teaching children. He came to know this while working five years with a nondenominational missionary group. When a young boy received a new pair of special high-top shoes, it was "the sparkle of his eyes and that big smile, I knew this is it, this is home, working with kids, this is what I am meant to do." Born in León, Mexico and raised in Los Angeles since the age of four, he remembers it was at that age of four when Efraín began drawing. He was good at it and has never stopped. His first large scale work was back in the 1990s, painting 40 feet long billboards around Los Angeles before computer generated images took over. When asked how many billboards he had painted..."hundreds" was his reply. Efrain first came to San Miguel de Allende in 2002 to visit family and returned permanently in 2009. "I've never looked back." His commitment to community work includes teaching children's after school programs in the village of Palo Colorado with Feed the Hungry and in San Miguel Viejo with Ojála-Niños, mentoring with the Jóvenes Adelante scholarship program and was the first coordinator of the Children's Art Foundation. Painting on the streets began with his beautiful image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, corner of Orizaba/Refugio in Colonia San Antonio. Murals began to appear onto the walls at this corner and on down the street. INSIDERS NEWS SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
All these murals are painted together by kids, neighbors, friends...with Efrain, guiding them all along. The images include a corner bicycle, balloons, a wall of gratitude and the delightful "doll house". Photorealism is his personal style of work, along with numerous indoor mural commissions. Efrain is also the owner of SOMOS Language Art Center, #35 Refugio Sur in Colonia San Antonio (Spanish/English). Adult classes include monthly cultural excursions. Little Picasso after-school program, ages 5-14, teaches language along with art and provides scholarships to deserving students.
"Nunca he mirado atrás".
THE INSIDER’S
Interior Style ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS For Your San Miguel Home and Furnishings by Jon Hartzler/EVOS Most everyone wants to do the right things to support the environment we live in. A starting point is asking the basic question, “where do these materials or products come from, and how are they produced?" In the case of wood products in Mexico, PROFEPA estimates that there are 24 million cubic meters of wood used each year in Mexico. About a third is produced legally, about a third is imported (and certified as to origin), and about a third is a product of illegal logging. When deciding where and how to use wood in your home, it also starts with asking your builder or wood supplier to guarantee the origin of the wood you could use. Imported hardwoods are controlled in the import process, and ranch grown wood from renewable sources is the ideal source. In reality the prices have been coming down in relation to non-certified wood. In terms of design, a helpful analysis is ask which are the priorities for use of wood, and what other materials could substitute for wood use (like hollow ceiling beams made to look solid, imported doors versus custom doors, etc…). Endangered Mexican woods, especially tropical and semi-tropical woods are clearly indicated with just a little internet research. While people innocently show off their mesquite floors or furniture, this is a wood that has been prohibited from logging in INSIDERS NEWS SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
the state of Guanajuato, and is an environmental curse for cutting. It´s a very slow growing species that is not replaced by planting. A good article for reference is “The Social and Ecological Importance of Mesquite in Guanajuato”. Mesquite trees provide important habitat and the pods are an important food source for rural populations and animals. Mesquite is beautiful in much the same way as ivory and tiger pelts. In furniture, our company in San Miguel pioneered the use of certified and imported ranch grown hardwoods for our furniture and cabinetry construction. We were told 25 years ago that it would make the furniture too expensive and no-one would buy it. Now it has become the standard in our area for good quality products. Good environmental choices tend to come down in price as they become widely adapted.

FASHION PARADE 2023
Fashion in Film Fashion Parade is an annual event that aims to promote and support design and creativity in San Miguel de Allende. On this occasion it will take place on November 7, 2023 at Hacienda Los Arcángeles. With a different theme each year, participating designers and artists will create exclusive collections and installations that will be on sale during the event. Attendees will be able to enjoy an evening full of design, art and creativity. Isabel Castejón, one of the creators of Fashion Parade (along with Isabel Pascacio and Paola Pacheco), tells us about what will happen in this edition. L: Tell us about this year's theme; Fashion in Film for Fashion Parade 2023. I: Fashion plays a fundamental role in the creation of a character for film, functioning as an intermediary between the individual and the narrative. Likewise, the character's wardrobe establishes a connection between his or her identity and the plot of the film. L: What is the objective of this event? I: We want to show how clothing can change our perception of the character and make us understand him or her better, as well as the connection between identity and the plot of the film. We also hope that you can analyze the garments, the fabrics, and how they play with the lights and, ultimately, this visually affects the viewer. There are several inspirations and one of these is to pay homage to cinema, creating a collection inspired by a film and a character. INSIDERS NEWS SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
L: Can cinema benefit from fashion? I: Fashion and clothing not only serve as practical links between the narrative and the character, but also help in the integration of psychoanalysis into its plot and story. The visual presence has an authoritative command in the plot, either complementing the narrative or dissociating itself from it. The style of clothing used in film serves as a functional mediator between the character and the narrative of the film, providing insight into the psychology of the characters; in turn, it inserts that awareness as a component of the story and plot. Since film is a visual medium, it can benefit from fashion to force both the audience and the actors themselves to understand the character. L: How are designers going to develop their collections in this theme, and does this influence the public to buy these garments?' I: Character development has been intrinsic in the creation of garments. Designers often focus on a single identity to imagine complete collections. That's why Fashion Parade is encouraging creators this year to pay homage to cinema by creating a collection inspired by a film, a character, or the film industry itself. Each designer will be supported by a custom set design and a score inspired by their collection.

By Lucy Novaro Photos: Courtesy of Isabel Castrejón for Fashion Parade 13

Spotlight When I arrived in San Miguel some seven years ago, I was asked to join a Cookbook Club. Instead of reading novels or non-fiction, we selected a cookbook every month and made a dish from it. Ironic, to say the least, since my husband had become our home’s full time cook and I was anxious to get my new art studio set up. But it turned out to be time well spent, many yummy recipes and new friends. Plus I met the master watercolorist Linda Whynman! Linda moved to San Miguel almost twenty years ago from New York where she was involved in art and art education. She says relocating to Central Mexico was “the best move I ever made. The light, the warmth of the people and all the senses delighting in the area made me want to capture and express those feelings.” Linda says she chose watercolor as her medium for “the intriguing play of pigments on the fabric of the paper, making enjoyable things happen that you never expected.” She describes her finished works as “somewhat realistic with a loose and personal touch.” Linda’s work will be on display at Galeria San Francisco until November 29th. This coincides with the International Watercolor Society’s Plein Air Festival, Friday through Sunday, November 9th through 12th. national event. This festival is a wonderful opportunity for San Miguel artists to expand their experience and their exposure. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase artwork directly from the artists, fostering a strong connection between creators and community. Additionally, the core group organizing this second annual festival is a strong mix of expats and Mexicans. Linda Whynman’s preeminent goal for the festival is to join these two communities and she feels successful in that effort. Special thanks goes to Susan Santiago and the Galeria San Francisco for hosting this year. Works from the festival will also be on view Friday and Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at Galeria San Francisco in Fabrica La Aurora. Winners will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Personalities Daniel Rueffert riffs: I’ve been here 54 years. I was hitchhiking down the road in Missouri when a Canadian sculptor picked me up and asked me I’d ever herd of San Miguel de Allende. After we became friends He said there was an art colony there and I wanted to be an artist so that’s how I got here in 1969. Since then I’ve learned to paint plain air. I love to pain outdoors. I do it often and get a little depressed when I can’t. What I like best about painting outdoors is the spontaneity of the brush strokes. I sit back after a paint session and stare at the new painting and marvel at whoever did it. Sometimes I pat myself on the back. Some16
times I scrape the paint off. No, I never scrape the paint off. Oh, and if you think San Miguel is beautiful, stop into my gallery and look at what I’ve done to it. I’ve somehow managed to get myself in and out of San Miguel’s jail three times, each a story unto its own and stories I don’t tell in front of children. I do really, because kids don’t listen to me. Nobody does, I’m an artist. A mixed martial artist. Nah, just a painter. I’m pretty much a woke liberal progressive. I once caught a guy breaking into my house. I had him arrested and hauled off to jail. Then I bailed him out of jail and taught him how to

SAN MIGUEL FOODIE
Cheeseburger in Paradise By Kat Sparks
To quote the late musical legend, Jimmy Buffet, “heaven on earth with an onion slice.” I remember meeting Jimmy in Cozumel at my dads hotel & scuba shop, The Divers Inn. Dad was a big fan and I was just a barefoot kid running wild on the beach. Dean-o, my dad, rolled out the grill to the beach cafe and we had the best burgers of my life that night. It was perfect under the moon & stars as we claimed our own piece of heaven, all while the ocean waves lapped the pier and music filled the air. I think my love affair
with cheeseburgers began that night. San Miguel has a big love affair with cheeseburgers. Street vendors and rooftop restaurants serve 100s daily to visitors and locals alike. Some are elevated to grand chef design while other cooks keep it simple. You can find smash burgers, vegan burgers, mushroom burgers, kolbe burgers and all beef patty burgers- just about every menu has an offering. I enjoy several venues around town so thought to share a couple you that might want to try. Grandpa & Sons located in Aurora Fabrica is always on my

list for a good burger. When I don’t go with my standard “La Classico” with added bacon, I opt for the sliders. Please do not miss the pork belly as you will be in your happy food place. It tickles me that they brand their burger buns. Such a classy touch to a mighty fine burger. Birdies Burgers is back in San Miguel and Donnie Masterton hits it out of the park with his new sports bar location on Celaya. The Dude burger is almost more than I can handle with the piled on toppings but I love it! We are so fortunate to have Birdies reopen and such a great location. Burger and Taco is a street vendor near and dear to my heart. Located next to Cava Sautto at the “Y” on the Ancha, Fernanda makes the best street burgers IMO. Hand formed patties made to order are a good size and tasty! The care and love they take in creating the perfect burger comes thru in every bite. Open late to catch the party crowd going home. Stop by because you will be glad you did. Ten Ten Pie is my favorite grill

in town. Currently running a two-for-one Friday burger special. You are in for a treat! Flame grilled burgers piled high with toppings is a delight. Take a friend and enjoy the patio! Cafe Pueblo Magico 100 peso burger and fries combo is one of the best burger deals in town! I often go here for breakfast but when I get a hankering for burger deal this is my go-to joint. Fresh buns, simple toppings and quality meat. You can’t go wrong with this hidden gem. So how do I take my burgers? Yellow mustard, patty cooked medium-rare and extra black pepper with toppings on the side. I want the burger experience and eat the topping like a salad - just like I ate on the beach so long ago. Oh, and don’t forget the pickle slice please. Actually let’s make it two pickles! Happy eating y’all.

Does & Dont’s: No se alarme… Si construye, considere: Building Por Michael Negrin Townsend, Quality Custom Builders. Walking San Miguel’s cobblestone streets can raise serotonin levels to unexplored heights. If you are considering building a home or buying and remodeling in San Miguel, consider that ‘we’ are a UNESCO World Heritage designated city and some special building permits / designs may apply. Number one caveat: Do not try to be the contractor yourself! This can get you into mind-boggling and costly situations. Use Google Business and local platforms such as SMA Civil List to find established architects and construction companies to check their references. Then visit your top ‘selections’ in person to get to know them, and see their work, plus get comments from their clients. The preliminaries of any construction or remodeling project are just as important as the actual work. When you have chosen your candidates ask for a detailed architectural plan and estimate for every facet of the job. There may be a cost attached to this step but it is invaluable. You want to make it clear exactly what you are expecting and have it detailed in a legal contract so that what you seek will be delivered. Once you have the contract, if you have done your groundwork, try to relax and let your team do the work. If possible, don’t micromanage the job. (Treat the workers to a pizza every once in a while!) I believe that in every construction project there will be something that doesn’t go according to plan. Remember there is always a solution, so don’t panic! With a little patience and vision you can build the perfect space for yourself and step into your new home in a positive equity situation.

Tourism: Change the World! Tourism has the unique power to change the world. It inspires and transforms explorers and communities alike and is an enormous force for both personal and planetary development. San Miguel receives more than 2 million visitors a year.
CHARITYWorks NON-PROFIT RADIO
PROTECT, ENLIGHTEN, DREAM By Norman Briere, Board President, San Miguel CASA, Inc.
CASA, formally known as El Centro Para Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende, A.C., is recognized for its focus on health and education. In line with these missions, CASA began broadcasting on FM 92.1 Radio Cascabel Social in June 2023. Radio Cascabel Social is San Miguel's first non-profit radio station. CASA has used radio before. In the mid-2000s, CASA used commercial radio to reach marginalized youth and other disenfranchised populations. But the use of for-profit stations was cost prohibitive. There was a solution, however. Adolescent volunteers applied for a social radio license in 2009. Government approval was given to the application in 2021. Social radio stations cannot rely on income from ads to support their expenses. Station managers, technical staff, and program leads are all volunteers. FM 92.1 Radio Cascabel Social has two target audiences, which makes programming challenging. The priority audience is at-risk youth and other minorities and neglected groups who are often norm breakers, are discriminated against, and are often financially challenged. The goal is to provide information about many free and inexpensive health, legal, social, and cultural services that are available to everyone. The other target audience is listeners who might have negative feelings about the priority audiINSIDERS NEWS SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
ence. They may have preconceptions about at-risk and minority youth, gang members, or non-binary people. This audience is increasingly concerned about their safety and the perceived rise in criminal activity. FM 92.1 Radio Cascabel Social provides the same free and low-cost services to this second group of listeners as it does to the first group. FM 92.1 Radio Cascabel Social has a diverse programming schedule implemented by young people. There are currently 33 one hour long programs. Live shows air between 7:00 AM and 9:00 PM, while music plays during other times. The station is also committed to assisting with initiatives of other NGOs through the dissemination of public service announcements and targeted programming. FM 92.1 Radio Cascabel Social serves many functions. Its most important function is to: show what is possible, open doors, protect, enlighten, educate, and dream. Donations in both pesos and dollars can be made through the website. Donations in dollars are tax deductible as San Miguel - CASA, Inc. is a 501.c.3. To designate a donation specifically for the radio station, an indication of that should be left in the comments section on the donation page: www.casa.org.mx

HORSE & RIDER EL MUNDO ECUESTRE blessing of the horses at san martin de terreros
tion of a dusty meditation sprinkled with holy water.
In the late 18th century, a couple of humble farmers traveled to get quality seed in the Bajio, and after several days arrived at the hacienda in Terreros, where the Torres family offered lodging for a few days and noticed the farmers had the image of San Martin Caballero wrapped in a blanket. The Torres family wanted the image, so they exchanged it for some seeds of corn amd since that time, several divine events have happened in Terreros, including being spared from ravages of war. Years later, workers from the main hacienda of Terreros asked for a day off, on November 11th, San Martin’s saint day, and the boss initially wouldn’t grant it to them. The next day, he woke up with bruises all over his body shaped like horseshoes, and after that, he gave the day off and since then, November 11th became a celebration of San Martin de Terreros every year, and the festival of the blessing of the horses has been going on ever since.
