As a Grammy-nominated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer, Ravi Coltrane continues to blaze a bright path as a standout musician while carrying on his parents’ torch. He has founded the independent record label RKM, released six albums, and co-leads the Saxophone Summit with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman. He also enjoys a robust performing and recording career, collaborating with a host of renowned musicians such as Elvin Jones,

Kenny Baron, Steve Coleman, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, Joanne Brackeem, and of course, Terence Blanchard.

The Executive Artistic Director for SF Jazz, Blanchard’s career ranges from nightclubs and concert halls to the stage and silver screen. Beyond his reputation as a jazz trumpet soloist, Blanchard has earned scores of accolades as a multifaceted composer, creating two operas, Fire Shut Up in My Bones and Champion. He has released 20 albums and won eight Grammys.

Blanchard has also made Oscar history as the second African American composer to be twice nominated for an original score Academy Award. Both of his Oscar-nominated scores (BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods) are Spike Lee films, reflecting his 30 year collaboration with the director that spans over 20 films.

Across genres and formats, Blanchard continues to use his music to advocate for human rights and justice. A notable example is his 2016 album Breathless, which serves as a musical elegy for Eric Garner.

“You get to a certain age when you ask, ‘Who’s going to stand up and speak out for us?’ Then you look around and realize that the James Baldwins, Muhammad Alis, and Dr. Kings are no longer here… and begin to understand that it falls on you,” said Blanchard in a statement. “I’m not trying to say I’m here to try to correct the whole thing, I’m just trying to speak the truth.”

Community News Mayoral Race

Santa Barbara City Councilman Eric Friedman running for mayor “I would be honored to be endorsed by the Democratic Party,” Sneddon told the News-Press. “As a lifelong Democrat I share their core democratic values, and that is reflected in my actions on the city council and in the community.”

Friedman is seeking the endorsement of the Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committee, and submitted a questionnaire on January 1st. Friedman was elected in 2017 and is termed out this year.

“I really love serving at the City,” Friedman told the News-Press. “This is an opportunity to continue to serve in a town I grew up in.”

Friedman suffered a heart attack in 2025 while paddleboarding and said the near-death experience changed him.

“When I had my heart attack...going through that experience and the struggle to get better really changed how I look at life,” Friedman said. “I don’t want to sit out life and miss opportunities. This is an opportunity and I wanted to pursue it.”

Friedman’s entry into the race comes as a surprise as he is friends with the current mayor Randy Rowse, who is also seeking re-election.

Friedman said he was not looking to do a “better” job, but one that is “different,” from Rowse’s.

“Eric is a good man,” Rowse said. “We work together well. For the most part we see the city the same way. Eric was very upfront of me.”

Rowse said he has not thought about how the moderate Democrat

Friedman’s candidacy would affect his re-election bid.

“I don’t think about it very much,” Rowse said. “I am just focused on doing what I do. I just like to do the job.”

Both Friedman and Sneddon have served two terms on the City Council.

But young birds are a tricky ID: they take five years to develop that familiar plumage, instead wearing a mottled blend of brown and white that changes each year. Though rarely seen on the mainland in our county, Bald Eagles have begun a slow comeback of several breeding pairs on the Channel Islands—proof that progressive conservation measures can make a positive difference for our wildlife.

New Senate leader Monique Limón plans to focus on protecting immigrants

S THE NEW LEADER OF THE STATE SENATE, Santa Barbara County’s Monique Limón plans to put immigration issues at the top of her agenda.

Limón, who was born and grew up in the 21st Senate District she now represents, was sworn in this week after having been picked as the new Senate president pro tempore. She becomes the first Latina to hold the post. She is the daughter of immigrants.

At her swearing-in ceremony, the Democrat referenced the fear that immigration raids have wrought on California and her desire to honor contributions of those who arrived from other lands. She said no one is safe from the raids and that she carries a copy of her passport on her phone.

“I see people are being targeted because of the way they look, the language they speak and the jobs they hold,” Limón said in speaking to the Senate, Gov. Gavin Newsom, family and guests at the ceremony in Sacramento. She said she is proud to lead in a legislature where members “who care and who do not back down from protecting.”

She said her district, which includes not only Santa Barbara but also parts of San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, is a force in protecting the environment and natural resources.

“We have a collaborative business community that is expanding our region’s reach from tech to agribusiness, to tourism, to the wine industry,” Limón said.

She also said the Central Coast is “resilient,” having rebounded from disasters like the 1925 earthquake and 2017 Thomas Fire.

She called on senators to work together, to put aside political differences including Republicans’ “diehard love of former President Reagan” to accomplish goals.

As a mother to a daughter herself, the only mom to ever lead to the Senate, Limón said she understands the needs of parents, especially when it comes to childcare.

“I know what it’s like to get a pit in your stomach when you get a call from your child’s school because you child doesn’t feel well,” she said.

Limón was elected to the state Senate in 2020, having previously served in the Assembly. She worked as an educator for a total of 14 years at UCSB and Santa Barbara City College. She was a member of the Santa Barbara Unified School District’s board from 2010 to 2016.

In the Senate, she has held several key leadership posts and was chair of Banking and Financial Institutions and Natural Resources and Water committees. She has also chaired the Senate Democratic Caucus.

$750,000 Schmidt Sciences grant uses AI to transform Black press archives

Led by UCSB’s Jim Casey, a national coalition is working to make early African American newspapers freely accessible

A

S MUCH OF THE EARLY BLACK PRESS REMAINS SCATTERED OR DIFFICULT TO ACCESS, UC Santa Barbara English assistant professor Jim Casey is leading a project to recover and share 19th-century African American newspapers using artificial intelligence. He will head a national research team awarded $750,000 from Schmidt Sciences’ Humanities and AI Virtual Institute for “Communities in the Loop: AI for Cultures & Contexts in Multimodal Archives,” a project that brings together technology, scholarship, and community participation to make early African American newspapers more broadly and freely accessible to the public.

Under Casey’s leadership, the interdisciplinary team brings together expertise from ten universities and the Adler Planetarium to develop new AI tools that will help unlock fragmented archives of 19th-century Black newspapers. The project represents a fundamentally different approach to artificial intelligence — one that centers community participation and historical justice rather than corporate extraction and “black box” algorithms trained on biased data.

“As Freedom’s Journal, the first Black newspaper, declared in 1827, ‘Too long have others spoken for us,’” said Casey, founding director of the Early Black Press Project. “We are not just adapting existing AI to read these archives. We are asking: What can the Black press tradition itself teach us about gathering, sharing and transforming information?

“Early Black editors and journalists were innovating under slavery and Jim Crow — their methods have something profound to teach us about building better, non-extractive technology today.”

Translating this vision into functional technology requires overcoming significant technical hurdles.

According to Casey, current commercial AI tools are often trained on mainstream datasets that fail to account for historical nuances. As a result, these models struggle to accurately read the complex, experimental layouts of historical Black newspapers and frequently generate errors based on biased training data.

To address this, the UCSB-led team is developing machine learning models specifically trained on Black press materials to perform page layout segmentation and optical character recognition.

“Professor Casey’s work represents a vital convergence of historical inquiry and technological innovation,” said Daina Ramey Berry, the Michael Douglas Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts. “By bridging the gap between advanced computing and the humanities, this new project not only recovers crucial

history but demonstrates how UCSB is leading the way in ethical, communityfocused research.”

The newly-developed tools will prepare documents for Zooniverse, the world’s leading crowdsourcing platform.

There, volunteers will validate and improve the machine-generated text — a process known as “human in the loop” — ensuring the history is preserved accurately while training the AI to be more culturally competent.

The technology developed through this grant will power a massive public launch on Douglass Day 2027, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Freedom’s Journal. The event will invite tens of thousands of participants to transcribe historical documents via a new mobile interface, removing barriers to entry and allowing anyone with a phone to help save Black history.

The result, Casey hopes, will demonstrate that “another version of AI is possible — one that doesn’t have to be extractive, harmful or

Women’s Economic Ventures Names Board Chair DEANNA STEIGER, PH.D. has been appointed to serve as the new Board Chair for Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV). Steiger will serve a two-year term and succeeds Melissa Livingston. Steiger has served on WEV’s Board since 2022, most recently chairing the organization’s Development Committee. Venezuelan President Maduro Abducted

POTENTIALLY VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAW AND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION, President Trump ordered the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro, of Venezuela, a sovereign nation, in an attack on January 3rd. The Associated Press has reported the death of 24 Venezuelan security officers, 32 Cuban military and police officers, and an undetermined number of civilians in the military action that included multiple explosions in Caracas, the capital city.

There were seven US soldiers injured in the raid, according to the Pentagon, and the operation cost an undetermined number of millions of dollars.

President Maduro and his wife Cilia Adela Flores de Maduro were captured in their home and then taken to New York City, where US Attorney General Pam Bondi alleged in charging documents they engaged in cocaine-trafficking, conspiracy, and partnering with drug cartels designated as terrorist groups.

President Maduro was arraigned on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and stated he was a prisoner of war.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday that he was “deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action.” He said, “the ‘grave’ action by the U.S. could set a precedent for how future relations between nations unfold,” in an Associated Press report.

Also at the UN on Monday, U.S. envoy Mike Waltz defended the operation in Venezuela as a justified and “surgical law enforcement operation,” according to an Associated Press report.

Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada, in the same AP report, urged the Security Council to demand that Washington release Maduro and his wife and said, “If the kidnapping of a head of state, the bombing of a sovereign country and the open threat of further armed action are tolerated or downplayed, the message sent to the world is a devastating one: namely that the law is optional, and that force is the true arbiter of international relations.”

President Trump said in an online post, “Venezuela will be ‘turning over’ $2bn worth of Venezuelan crude to the United States, a flagship negotiation that would divert supplies from China while helping Venezuela avoid deeper oil production cuts,” it was reported in a Guardian article and several news sources on Tuesday.

A December 19th groundbreaking ceremony united elected officials, public agency leaders, and project partners, including representatives from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, the offices of Congressman Salud Carbajal and State Senator Monique Limón, Assemblymember Gregg Hart, and City of Goleta leadership.

“Today, because we all worked together—our state partners, our county partners, our federal partners, and even the voters of the State of California who passed Prop 1—we’re able to be here together and make this happen for our community, so that our families have a place to live, so that our seniors have a place to live, so that everyone has their best chance to live a good life here in The Good Land,” said Goleta City Councilmember James Kyriaco.

Heritage Ridge will deliver 104 affordable homes through two integrated components: Heritage Ridge Senior Housing, offering 41 all-electric, solar-powered units designed with senior-focused amenities; and Heritage Ridge Special Needs Family Housing, which will include 63 homes, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. This latter component will also include Project-Based Vouchers serving homeless households and veterans, along with community amenities and CPTED-informed design features.

Toasting the New Year at The SB Symphony

RINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER ON NEW YEAR’S EVE has become a tradition for the Santa Barbara Symphony, who once again celebrated music at the beginning of a new year at the Granada Theatre. The toasting began with complimentary champagne, hats, noisemakers, and laughter in the lobby as attendees gathered in their best “Golden Age of Broadway and Hollywood” styles.

Memorable movie scores by John Williams, show tunes from Broadway, and a few spicy more were delivered under the baton of Tony Award-winning guest conductor Stuart Malina. Guest vocalist, Madison Claire Parks, a high octane soprano and rising star of musical theatre, gave an outstanding performance. Claire Parks is best known for her record 700 performances as Glinda in Wicked’s national tour.

The full house was greeted by Kathryn R. Martin, CEO and President of the Santa Barbara Symphony, who recognized individuals and groups attending the event, adding a personal note to the evening. Among the sponsors recognized were Principal Concert Sponsor Samuel M. & Alene S. City of SB Accepts Proposals for New Waterfront Restaurant Tenant

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RUN A SANTA BARBARA WATERFRONT RESTAURANT? The Anchor Rose is closed and the location is available, with the City of Santa Barbara having accepted proposals for prospective tenants until Wednesday of this past week.

The Waterfront Department seeks a successful restaurant operator interested in leasing the space at 113 Harbor Way #180 (upstairs) located in the Santa Barbara Harbor Commercial Area. For the past 30 years, the location has served as restaurant space and a focal point in the community, offering a top tier waterfront dining experience to residents and visitors alike.

Lake Cachuma Reaches Capacity Following Storms CACHUMA LAKE IS AT FULL CAPACITY. The water is flowing through Bradbury Dam to the lower Santa Ynez River. Private boaters can launch, but for now the boat rentals are closed. All other lake operations including camping, hiking, and nature walks are open.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED for the annual rose garden pruning in front of the Santa Barbara Old Mission. 150 folks would be helpful to clip 1,500 rose bushes on Saturday, January 10th.

AT 12:32AM ON TUESDAY, Santa Barbara County and City Fire responded to a second-story, two-bedroom apartment fire at 160 N. Kellogg Ave, Goleta. It was confined to the unit. No serious injuries were reported.

FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A WEEK, a vehicle has gone off Hwy 154 and down an embankment. This was a sedan that ended up in the bushes around E. Camino Cielo on Monday afternoon.

The driver did not have serious injuries.

THERE WAS AN AT&T OUTAGE affecting 5G/LTE service in the City of Santa Barbara reported on January 6th. Outages such as these may impact the ability to call 911 from AT&T devices.

Marine Protector-class Patrol Boat Makes SB Visit THE USCGC SOCKEYE, the United States Coast Guard’s 37th Marine Protector-class patrol boat stationed in Bodega Bay, made a stop over in Santa Barbara next to the locally stationed patrol boat the USCGC Blackfin. Both are 87 feet long and docked here in the Santa Barbara harbor on January 5th.

Hit Fire Hydrant Sends Gusher Sky High A RED SEDAN was reported seen leaving the area where a fire hydrant was knocked off at N. Kellogg Ave. at San Ardo Way in Goleta on Monday, January 5th. These are always quite the gushers until public works or water workers can get a special tool to the scene and turn a valve off that is nearby.

THERE WAS A HARD CLOSURE of the Union Pacific train tracks at Gaviota coast after Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a medical emergency at Hwy 101 and Arroyo Quemada at 7:47am on Tuesday.

An excavator operator working on debris removal along stormdamaged tracks sustained minor injuries after a large erosion event caused the excavator to fall approximately ten feet. The operator self-extricated, climbed back up to the tracks, and was evaluated by fire crews on scene. The adult male patient was transported by ground ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with minor injuries.

Y HAPPY NEW YEAR’S GREETING is to those 19 states that increased their minimum wage, and my condolences to those Republican-run red states that haven’t ever increased their minimum wage but relied on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour that was last increased in 2009.

Minimum wage hikes went into effect in 19 states on January 1, 2026: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

Only four are Republican red states. The rest of the red states still have the federal

minimum wage that is worth just $5.25 per hour in today’s dollars.

The advocacy group One Fair Wage (OFW) said “According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, there is no county in the United States where a worker can afford to meet basic needs on less than $25 an hour.

Even in the nation’s least expensive counties, a worker with one child would need at least $33 an hour to cover essentials like rent, food, childcare, and transportation.”

GW Bush then plunged the U.S. back into debt in 2000 with additional massive tax cuts while paying for the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. The annual deficits plunged further beginning in 2008 with the need to pay for the 2008-09 Great Recession (large gray bar).

Yet the Obama administration paid the annual deficit back down to its 2004 level.

The Trump I era then increased it with more massive tax cuts being paid for once again by the American public. The graph portrays the obvious. The largest annual deficits were created during the years of Republican tax cuts.

The Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award, which was recently renamed after longtime SBIFF friends and collaborators Pete and Madelyn Hammond, will recognize the trio’s contributions to one of the most remarkable films of 2025. Also starring Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, One Battle After Another follows a washed-up revolutionary, Bob (DiCaprio), who is surviving off the grid with his daughter, Willa (Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and Willa goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her as father and daughter battle the consequences of his past.

The film has been nominated for nine Golden Globes, including individual nominations for DiCaprio, Penn, and Del Toro, and 14 Critics Choice Awards nominations. It has been named Best Picture of the Year by The Gotham Awards, The National Board of Review, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the New York Film Critics Circle.

The Cinema Vanguard Award recognizes actors who have forged their own path, taking artistic risks and making a significant and unique contribution to film. OHN RUSSELL WULLBRANDT: AN ARTIST AND TWO PLACES is a charming book about a painter and muralist of the best quality. The book chronicles his time in two places: Hawaii and California. Born and raised in Carpinteria, Wullbrandt studied art at City College before launching into a career as a building muralist in San Francisco and the wider Bay Area. His delightful trompe l’oeil images may be familiar to you if you know San Francisco at all well.

In the ‘90s, Wullbrandt met David Murdock of the Dole Food Company. Murdock was developing hotels on Lana’i, and he wanted an artist to paint murals on the interior that reflected the flora, fauna, and culture of the people of that island. The book then dives into page after luscious page of the beautiful and brilliant work that Wullbrandt did there over the course of a decade.

But the charm of the paintings of Carpinteria, the city as he grew up in it, are so dear. A plein air painter of skill, Wullbrandt renders these memories with wonderful clarity and a firm sense of place.

The color palate of his work is that of the light of California.

The last half of the book is filled with paintings of the cities, hillsides, ranches, and beaches of Santa Barbara County.

In the early 2000s, Wullbrandt returned to California, where he worked with Murdock on murals for the Dole headquarters and Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake, as well as Murdock’s own home.

You will smile when you realize that those paintings you loved in Westlake are by Lynnell Jackson Burkett, Wullbrandt. And John also John did two murals in Carpinteria, author/publisher, Russell Wullbrandt, An including his “World’s Safest Artist and Two Places Beach” mural on Wullbrandt Avenue. The avenue was named for his father.

Wullbrandt is a member of the Oak Group, plein air painters that are based in and around Santa Barbara. His works can be found at the Santa Barbara Fine Art Gallery at 1321 State Street, next to the Arlington Theater. The paintings sit happily alongside the canvases of his longtime fellow artist friends. Copies of the book by Lynnell Jackson Burkett can be found there. And, as John is a frequent attendee of 1st Thursdays downtown, one has a chance to meet the man himself at the gallery.

All the while, John has been a busy painter on canvas. He did the Old Spanish Days Fiesta poster in 2005, when his brother, Chip Wullbrandt, was Presidente.
