Earthy & On Fire –Opera SB’s Carmen will open the season

ARISING STAR WILL SHINE HER LIGHT on the Granada stage when Sarah Saturnino steps into the title role in Opera Santa Barbara’s production of at the end of this month.

Saturnino, a mezzo soprano of Mexican-American heritage, was recently crowned a Grand Finalist (that means winner) of the 2023 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

Saturnino’s voice will be a match for Carmen’s oversized and passionate character and will reverberate in the Granada’s colorful chamber, bringing this story vividly to life.

Now in Santa Barbara with about a week of rehearsals under her belt, Saturnino was glowing about the experience and team in a telephone interview earlier this week.

“Opera Santa Barbara is incredibly welcoming and supportive of the artists,” Saturnino shared. “I’m happy to be here [in Santa Barbara]. It’s my first time with the company.”

Carmen’s character is first introduced on stage when she sings an aria, the Habanera. As soon as it starts, even non-opera aficionados will recognize it. That song is also the first time Saturnino sang in front of the company.

“It was a little daunting,” she shared. “Everyone knows it. But it’s such a fun piece....I’m hoping people will enjoy the playfulness and get to see Carmen enjoying herself [before the more serious aspects of the plot begin to play out],” adding, “My Carmen is earthy, playful, and mischievous.”

Becoming a Grand Finalist

Winner at the 2023 Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition is only the latest of many prestigious credits in Saturnino’s career.

After growing up in northern California, she earned her Bachelor’s degree at UCLA, her Master’s at Yale, was an Apprentice Artist at Santa Fe Opera, and is currently a member of LA Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. Of her performance at the Met Competition Finals, the most prestigious competition for opera singers in the United States, Operawire wrote:

“Her jaw-dropping performance of the Saint-Saens aria was intense, dropping into the depths of her voice and excelling on either end of her range. Her top notes were solid fortresses of sound, ringing and unwavering.... Her dazzling performance was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience, who wouldn’t let her leave the stage.”

Saturnino’s family will be in town for this set of concerts and she is looking forward to seeing them. “The mezzo is not typically a leading lady,” she remarked. “Every mezzo’s dream is to sing Carmen....I’m looking forward to getting into the Granada and giving it my all.”

The Company

Opera Santa Barbara’s season will continue with Verdi’s Il Trovatore at the Lobero Theatre on February 9th and 11th. Il Trovatore weaves an intense story of doomed romances amidst a civil war. It will be performed by voices familiar to OSB regulars, including tenor Harold Meers, soprano Karin Wolverton, and baritone Timothy Mix.

Hector Armienta’s operatic reimagining of Zorro will follow at the Lobero on April 19th and 21st. Made famous by over a century of Hollywood films, this early

California version of Robin Hood follows Don Diego de la Vega, who dons a black mask to protect his community from its greedy, oppressive Spanish colonizers.

OSB season also includes La Divina: The Art of Maria Callas, a celebration of the 100th birth year anniversary of Greek soprano Maria Callas.

Hosted in collaboration with the Argyropoulos Chair of Hellenic Studies at UCSB, the night will feature sopranos Eleni Calenos and Jana McIntyre November 10th at the Lobero Theatre and on the 12th at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks.

A Free Career Fair on Sept. 28th

ACAREER FAIR FOR PEOPLE ON A JOURNEY TO FINDING

MEANINGFUL WORK will feature numerous corporate, government, and nonprofit agencies promoting internships and career opportunities in a variety of fields including business, sciences, social work, behavioral sciences, and liberal arts. The event is called BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition and Meaningful work) and it will be hosted by Pacifica Graduate Institute Alumni Association on Sept. 28th from 10am to 4pm at 801 Ladera Lane, in Santa Barbara.

The fair also features presenters, workshops, and keynote speaker Lisa Wong, Psy.D., Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Wong, who earned her Psy.D. from the Pacifica Graduate Institute and her M.A. in clinical psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, is a lifelong advocate for vulnerable populations and social justice issues. Wong spent more than two decades working in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles providing care to some of the county’s most vulnerable and high-risk individuals experiencing serious mental illness and homelessness. Prior to her current role, she served as the Mental Health Clinical Program Head over Downtown Mental Health Center’s general outpatient services, CalWORKs/GROW, and Prevention & Early Intervention programs.

Grand Opening of Vera Cruz Village

VERA CRUZ VILLAGE, Santa Barbara’s newest affordable housing facility, was formally opened by the Housing Authority, last Thursday. The project, located at 116 E. Cota, was specifically designed as transitional housing for the unhoused and has 28 affordable units.

Vera Cruz Village was formally opened with a ribbon cutting with Mayor Randy Rowse, Rob Fredericks, Supervisor Das Willams, and a host of local dignitaries and civic leaders, last Friday and 28 people moved in the same day. New residents include 14 individuals from DignityMoves transitional housing who have been relocated to Vera Cruz Village, according to a press release.

Vera Cruz Village will haver regular on-site supportive services including case management and instructor-led educational and health and wellness classes available to residents free of charge. There also will be free in-unit internet and a full time on-site manager. STUART FUSS is a retired investment real estate broker. Originally from New York, Fuss moved to Santa Barbara in 2005, where he has served on the board of the YMCA and the Santa Barbara Blues Society. He first got involved with Meals On Wheels in the mid-1990s, when he delivered meals to senior residents living in San Francisco. His past positive experiences with the organization motivated him to join the local chapter, deliver meals, and ultimately join the Board of Directors.

MATTHEW NEHMER, PhD., is the president and CEO of The Colleges of Law. Previously, he served as assistant director of media relations at George Washington University, the first Director of Communications for The Chicago School, and one of the founding employees of nonprofit organization The Community Solution Education System. He earned his PhD in Organizational Leadership from The Chicago School. His local volunteer work has included serving as past president of the Rotary Club of SB, director of university relations for the Adizes Institute Worldwide, and now sitting on the Meals on Wheels SB board.

ATIME FOR REMEMBRANCE, EDUCATION, and community, Families ACT! united 100 community members for an International Overdose Awareness Day Teach-In, Silent March, and Candlelight Vigil at the Santa Barbara Courthouse on August 31st.

“The event was designed to shed light on the growing opiate crisis, break down stigma, remember those who lost their lives to an overdose, and provide solace to grieving friends and family members,” explained a statement released by Families ACT!

Beginning with a blessing by Chumash representative LoriAnn Velez of the Barbareño Band of Chumash Indians, the event featured speakers from the faith and recovery communities, local leaders, and medical and law enforcement representatives.

Santa Barbara residents also gave personal testimonies of their experiences with overdose or their experience losing children, siblings, partners, or parents to overdoses. Attendees then marched along State Street with signs to draw awareness to the overdose crisis, followed by a candlelight vigil hosted by Reverend David N. Moore.

Event co-sponsor County Behavioral Wellness also distributed free Narcan nasal spray and Fentanyl test strips. According to Families ACT!, a person in Santa Barbara County dies from an overdose twice a week.

“Our participation in Santa Barbara as a community links us with this global effort to raise awareness, foster compassion, reduce harm, and advocate for policies to protect and support people new to drug use as well as people struggling with chronic addiction,” reads a statement from Families ACT!

Vista Del Mar Union School District

Welcomes Largest Enrollment in Five Years

PRIDING ITSELF ON PROMOTING a small-classroom, family-style atmosphere, the Vista del Mar Union School District has experienced an increase in enrollment from 28 to over 60 students for the 2023-2024 academic year. This marks the largest enrollment the school has had since 2018.

“We are a family here and can provide a level of support, both academically and emotionally, that wouldn’t be feasible in a larger school,” said Superintendent Bree Valla.

Located at the 101 and Highway 1 intersection, the Vista del Mar Union School District is made up of one school and serves grades TK through eighth grade. Even during this period of increased enrollment, the school is able to maintain a 12:1 studentto-teacher ratio. Thanks to the larger student body, the school will be able to participate in the Santa Ynez Valley Middle School Sports League for the first time in many years, offering students the chance to compete in volleyball, basketball, and track.

Barbara Rubin Presented PACT Freedom Award

BARBARA RUBIN, a Santa Barbara resident and longtime supporter of PACT (Protect All Children from Trafficking), formerly ECPAT-USA, has been presented with the nonprofit’s Freedom Award. Rubin was a primary initiator of the movement to protect women and children from sexual exploitation in the 1990s, helping in the development of PACT. Her other volunteer work has included serving with Presbyterian Women USA, Girl Scouts USA, and other area nonprofits. HONORING THE SIX passionates, the Santa Barbara County Education Office has named its 2024 Distinguished Mentors and Distinguished New Educators. Honorees are determined through a countywide nomination process involving school administrators, colleagues, and other school community members.

The honorees will be recognized at SBCEO’s annual A Salute to Teachers gala this November. The evening will also honor the 2024 SB County Teacher of the Year, Gregory Wolf, and 2024 SB Bowl Performing Arts Teacher of the Year, Elesa Carlson.

SB County Appoints New Human Resources Director

KRISTINE SCHMIDT’s appointment as the new Director of Human Resources was approved by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors after an extensive nationwide search to find the ideal candidate to succeed Maria Elena De Guevara, who will retire from the position in January 2024. Schmidt will assume her new role on January 2, 2024.

Schmidt brings a wealth of experience in human resources, particularly in local government settings, to her new position. She currently serves as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Goleta, a role she has been in since 2019. Before her tenure in Goleta, she dedicated 22 years of her career to the City of Santa Barbara from 1997 to 2019, where she held various positions in human resources, employee relations, and administrative services. Her journey in the field of human resources began in 1991, reflecting her strong commitment and dedication to the profession.

In addition to her extensive professional background, Schmidt holds a Juris Doctorate from the Santa Barbara College of Law.

County Executive Officer Mona Miyasato, expressed her confidence in Schmidt, saying, “Kristine Schmidt’s comprehensive experience, and proven local leadership in the field of human resources make her the ideal candidate to lead our Human Resources department. I am confident that she will continue innovative solutions as we meet the evolving needs of our workforce.”

“Kristine Schmidt’s experience in local government and familiarity with our community’s unique needs will make her a perfect fit for this position. Her expertise and commitment to enhancing our workforce will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the County. I am confident that she will lead the department with integrity and dedication,” said Board Chair and First District Supervisor Das Williams.

The 2024 Distinguished Mentors

VICTORIA AGUIRRE is a first-grade teacher and grade-level lead at Hollister School as well as a designated mentor for new teachers on campus, and a member of the school site’s Guiding Coalition. She is known for her creative classroom instruction and for going above and beyond in supporting new teachers as well as veteran staff. One colleague shared: “Victoria has an incredible wealth of knowledge about equitable, engaging, and effective instructional practices. I strive to be the kind of educator she is and feel incredibly lucky to have the privilege to learn from her.”

NATALIE DURBIN is an Instructional Coach at Liberty Elementary School, helping teachers improve their practices and achieve greater student engagement and outcomes. She provides instructional resources and shows teachers how to implement them in the classroom successfully, in addition to working one-on-one with students. Her “mastery” of teaching English Language Arts is credited for students’ excitement about reading and writing. “Natalie has the gift of seeing the full picture and knows the support teachers need to reach their full potential. She is an outstanding role model for all teachers, new and seasoned,” shared her principal.

TIFFANY GONZALEZ has taught kindergarten at Peabody Charter School for 15 years. She is admired as a key member of the school community and is seen as a tremendous resource to all Peabody staff. She contributes to and cares deeply about the school’s success, serving as the school site’s union president and on various committees including the Technology Committee and English Advisory Committee. Her principal shared: “Tiffany’s exceptional skills as a classroom teacher, her collaborative nature, bilingual abilities, and leadership qualities are what distinguish her as an outstanding mentor.”

The 2024 Distinguished New Educators

RYAN HELSEL is a science teacher at Goleta Valley Junior High School, SB Unified School District. In addition to teaching his first year at Goleta Valley Junior High, he mentored 20 students for the Science Olympiad competition and shared helpful materials with other teachers in the district. Colleagues admire his concerted effort to build meaningful relationships with his students, parents, and fellow teachers and staff. His positive attitude and “exceptional dedication to providing highquality instruction and fostering a nurturing learning environment for all students” are deeply respected by his school administration.

SAMMI LAMBERT has taught chemistry at San Marcos High School for two years, realizing a personal lifelong dream. She is described by her colleagues as one of the “best new teachers” they have encountered and someone who is setting the bar for the profession. Lambert is active in the teaching community and leads professional development for science teachers countywide. She pursues new opportunities for her students, such as an invitation to the Disney Imagination Institute for her Advanced Placement chemistry class. Her principal shared, “Sammi is intentional with her teaching, cares deeply for her students, and is extremely thoughtful and reflective about her craft.”

JULIO MOLINA is a science teacher at Delta High School, a position for which he is “naturally gifted,” according to his peers. It is extremely important to him that students feel successful, and he always has his door open for extra help. His lessons engage students through websites, videos, partner work, and group work. Molina is credited as the reason why his students are “excited and eager to involve themselves in learning.” Outside of the classroom, he helps with robotics clubs and school activities, also greeting students in front of the school every day as they arrive. “He encourages all students, no exception. We are fortunate to have him as a staff member at Delta,” his colleague shared.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH: The Cal Coast MS Society raised money Friday for programs to help those with Multiple Sclerosis in the tri-counties. A special Condor Express ride brought in donations and had several raffle prizes. All funds raised stay in the local area.

The Blues Society To Rock the Carrillo Rec

JAMMING THE BLUES at the Carrillo Recreation Center, the West Coast Blues All-Stars will headline a performance on September 23rd at 7:15pm. The trio featuring pianist Fred Kaplan, guitarist Junior Watson, and singer Terry Hanck is presented by the Santa Barbara Blues Society.

The City of Santa Barbara is seeking public comment on the 2022-2023 Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER). The CAPER evaluates t City’s performance on the 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan (AAP), which list activities that would be performed during the year to achieve the performance measures outlined in the City’s 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan (CP). The CP is a 5 year planning document which primarily determines the City’s housing and community development needs, issues, and resources. The CP helps the City determine strategies to address those identified needs using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME funds.

In order for the City to receive annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), an Annual Action Plan (AAP) must be submitted. The AAP specifies the activities that will be undertaken to meet the City’s 5-year Consolidated Plan goals to address housing and community development needs using CDBG and HOME funds. The purpose of the hearing is to obtain public input on housing and community development needs.

Recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, Martha Graham single-handedly defined contemporary dance as a uniquely American art form. In this evening of new and reimagined works framing a Graham classic, the company performs Hofesh Shechter’s high-energy CAVE and Graham’s Dark Meadow Suite, an abstract work about life’s journey and the search for connection with one’s self and one’s community. A reconstruction of Agnes de Mille’s Rodeo rounds out the program, with a reorchestration of Aaron Copland’s score performed by a live bluegrass ensemble led by Punch Brother Gabe Witcher.

On Tuesday, October 3rd, members of the Martha Graham Dance Company will conduct a dance class at Graham’s alma mater, Santa Barbara High School. Graham, who graduated from SBHS in 1913, found Santa Barbara stimulating after growing up to the age of 14 in Pennsylvania. An active participant in the life of the school, she captained the girls’ basketball team and was editor of the newspaper. Graham was profoundly moved by the multiculturalism of early 20th century Santa Barbara, and declared in her memoirs that “no child can develop as a real Puritan in a semi-tropic climate.”

ALK ABOUT ONE BUSY WEEKEND down at the waterfront! The annual Charity Regatta hosted by the Santa Barbara Yacht Club on Saturday, September 9th for the benefit of VNA Health was a full day’s extravaganza extending into the evening hours and beyond. The next day, Leadbetter Beach was well occupied by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s Paddle Out Beach Party on Sunday, September 10th. Both events were accompanied by an energy-infused rock band on the sand.

Charity Regatta

This year’s Charity Regatta was helmed by Co-Chairs Staff Commodore Francie Lufkin and Nick Sebastian and began with a mimosa-sprinkled buffet brunch after which MC David Moorman called the attendees to gather for the Opening Ceremony. SBYC 2023 Commodore David Sadecki welcomed his guests and thanked the hard working volunteers from both VNA and the Yacht Club after which he introduced VNA Health’ President and CEO Kieran Shah. “This is such an amazing event and an example of a long time partnership for the benefit of so many …. lasting 19 years! It is so great to be together outdoors and on the water,” Shah expressed. “Many thanks for the Yacht Club’s continued commitment to support the health and well being of our community, making this charitable event for VNA Health one of the largest and most successful in Santa Barbara!”

The opener was followed by a trek to the Spectator Boats offered by SBYC members to view the race from the water. Those who preferred the safety of the shore were treated to beach activities on the strand and the Palapa Bar nearby. Tables were being cleared for that evening’s BBQ dinner and after-party and the presentation of a check to VNA Health for $186,220! Co-chair Lufkin gratefully acknowledged, “For the last 19 years the Yacht Club has hosted this event as our way to give back to an organization that has touched so many lives. VNA Health has increased its charitable community programs such as Serenity House, the Loan Closet, community and palliative care, music therapy,

and bereavement services despite the ups and downs of Mother Nature.”

Paddle Out Party

On Sunday, September 10th at 9am, the Maritime Museum hosted its third Paddle Out Party fundraiser for the Maritime Museum’s educational programs. With the support of other ocean oriented organizations such as Whale Heritage Area and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, Heal the Ocean, and Surfrider Foundation whose tents could be found nearby, the event focused on marine ecology. World renowned surfer, SBMM board member and event co-chair Shaun Tomson noted, “The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is very dear to my heart, a beautiful sanctuary in our small harbor dedicated to preserving and protecting our maritime history even to 13,500 years ago, to the history of the Chumash people.” Also attending was Jean-Michel Cousteau representing his own non-profit, Ocean Futures.

My always tardy self was informed of the program preceding the event by SBMM Executive Director, Greg Gorga. After welcoming both paddlers and guests, Gorga introduced Toni Cordero, a member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation who reminded the attendees of the lessons of history and of her people to respect and care for both the ocean and the land that sustains us. Describing herself as a tomol paddler (the Chumash canoe) she is constantly aware of her duty to pass the message of her people to preserve and care for the environment. By the time I arrived, the surfboards had been nestled on the sand and the paddlers were noshing, socializing, and listening to the band, Do No Harm! How about that for a name? Never a dull moment down at the waterfront!

Sigrid Toye volunteers for the Breakwater Flag Project. She is on the board of directors of the Maritime Museum and participates in Yacht Club activities. An educational/behavior therapist, Sigrid holds a Ph.D in clinical psychology. She loves all things creative, including her two grown children who are working artists. LATINX CULTURES are on display from September 15th through November 10th at the Arts Fund Gallery located at La Cumbre Plaza, 120 S. Hope Street, Suite F119 in Nuanced Peoples: Exploring Latinx Identities. The exhibition includes artwork by Cynthia Rodriguez, Jossilete Serrano, Rabbit.Print, Stefanie Rodriguez, and Jesús Balandrano Ramírez (curator).

“Nuanced Peoples aims to explore the diversity within the label “Latinx” and show we are not a monolithic group, but a people of many emotions, professions, and skin colors,” according to a release by The Arts Fund. “The artists in this show come from similar cultural backgrounds, but within their own histories lay a plethora of unique stories to tell. Each artwork is a thread that makes up the fabric of Latinx identity, an identity that is always being expanded and relooked. The works collectively speak on the vastness of Latinx realities and the agency for making one’s future a possibility.”

THE AMAZINGLY DETAILED AND COLORFUL WORK of Digital Handcraft at Clay Studio opening with a reception September 14th from 5 to 7pm, is an educational exhibition that will introduce visitors to the world of 3D printing. The show features a variety of examples that demonstrate key concepts and principles within digital fabrication, highlighting the potential and versatility of 3D printing technology available to ceramic artists today.

The exhibit will include 3D prints in a variety of stages, including renderings, prototypes, models, and final prints. Concepts and techniques will be demonstrated and explained using video, QR codes and web links.

The exhibition was organized by Lynda Weinman and Joey Watson.
