Art review: The Oak Group: Foothills Forever, through May, the Faulkner Gallery, SB Central Public Library

A

Art for the Foothills’ Sake

T LEAST IN SPIRIT AND IN PASSING, art and nature prevail in the current exhibition at the central Library’s Faulkner Gallery. The Oak Group, the venerable consortium of respected local landscape painters on a mission, has mounted the art show and nature tribute Foothills Forever, a large, overflowing selection of painting, sometimes stacked two and three canvases high on the walls.

Overall, the show feels like a spring-timed reawakening ritual. It celebrates the healing power of art, natural splendor in our midst, and also suggests an epic collective sigh of relief in this cautious end-ofpandemic time.

An underlying and implicit mission statement of this show might be “all hail the San Marcos Foothills.”

The remarkable and scenic – and dramatically viewendowed – expanse of unspoiled land by the juncture of the 154 and Foothill Road is the latest winner in Santa Barbara’s efforts to preserve and protect precious natural locales from ruin (aka development).

Recently, the concerted fund-raising effort – which this exhibition partly contributes to – valiantly preserved the West Mesa section of the property.

Energies are now directed towards property maintenance and further acreage Cloudy Day, oil, by John Iwerks acquisition.

Interestingly, the possibility of escaping to such nearby natural spots as the San Marcos Foothills, with or without dogs and other loved ones, was one pleasure afforded us otherwise homebound locked-down Santa Barbarans. Plein air painters were also afforded ready access to these outposts, creating paintings such as we see here.

For anyone as-yet unfamiliar with the San Marcos property’s allure, a visit is in order. And a good introduction and companion to the real thing can be found at the Faulkner. Although general stylistic

landscape painting values are evident in the show as a whole, each painter instinctively brings a personal eye and touch to the subject, and its different vistas and areas.

Whitney Brooks Abbott’s East Mesa View, San Marcos Foothills applies the artist’s signature loose, rhythmic way with brushstrokes and muted palette.

Chris Chapman, conversely, basks in the power of sunlight as symbol of celestial spirit in Winter Light.

Here, a trail in the foreground leads the eye to a seemingly beatific sun reflection on the ocean in the distance. She seems to be aiming for a taste of transcendence, beyond the pretty picture factor at hand.

Sunlight’s powers take on a different character in Richard Schloss’ Sunrise Clouds, San Marcos Foothills, basking in the fading purple-ish glow of a sunrise with a lone oak tree as quiet, wise protagonist.

Oaks often rightly assume heroic properties in many of the exhibition’s paintings. Two of the show’s largest paintings command the back gallery wall. John Wullbrandt’s majestic and precision-painted The Iconic San Marcos Oak hangs above Arturo Tello’s warmly expressive portrait of a shadow-casting oak, Ray Day 2022, Foothills Forever.

approach to his foothills tributes. The property itself is in focus in Foothill Impression, while the surrounding structures and reminders of human habitation sneak into the picture in San Marcos Foothill Neighborhood. In Henderson’s compressed and slightly cartoon-ish view, the area’s suburbs and hill-hugging singular dwellings resemble Tuscany more than the 805.

Teri Taber’s pastel Warm Embrace is truthfully titled: she captures a gently embracing visual warmth through the balance of bright yellow mustard blossoms, tufted golden trees and misty mountains hopping in the background. Across the room, mustard is seen in a yet bright spotlight in Jeremy Harper’s small but magnetic triptych, Swimming in Mustard. Swimming, visually speaking, is the proper verb here.

More generally, the show literally swims in the splendor of its allotted subject. The takeaway message: get thee to the Foothills Preserve to see and feel it – and for some, paint it – for ourselves.

In related tree-as-character art, Michael Drury’s Spring Morning at the Cow Pasture finds the artist, as is his wont, stepping outside the norms and boundaries of conventional landscape art. In this canvas blessed with unorthodox compositional and light-play qualities, a pair of thick oaks seem Sunrise Clouds, oil by Rick Schloss to crouch beneath the shaded backlit mountains, grounded by a lyrical swath of pasture.

The pale sky above consumes nearly half the composition, in a painting which wins Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los point for its fresh, creative configuring and Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, an air of reverential mystery.

Another stylistic outlier in the exhibition is Tom Henderson, who brings a more abstracted and graphically stylized

and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for SilmanJames Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

LISTENING BENEATH THE WAVES before cutting the surface with their sleek, dark gray bodies, minke whales are one of the smaller baleen whales, only growing up to 35 feet and weighing up to 20,000 pounds.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, their name dates back to a whaling spotter named Meincke, who confused what became known as minke whales for a blue whale.

While Alaska minke whales migrate on a regular basis, those living along the Washington, Oregon, and California coastlines establish areas that they consider home.

Fortunately, regional minke whales often visit the Santa Barbara Channel, where local whale watchers are most likely to catch sight of them between May and September.

AWC-SB Women of Achievement Awards

G

UIDING OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH HARDSHIP AND TRAGEDY WITH RESILIENCE, COURAGE, AND UNITY, this year’s six Women of Achievement Awards recipients contributed unprecedented levels of commitment and skill to Santa Barbara County these past years. Their recent and past accomplishments were honored by the Association for Women in Communications Santa Barbara Chapter during the 14th annual awards ceremony luncheon, themed Navigating Uncharted Waters.

“These women communicators have proven not only once, not twice, but time and time again that they can handle unforeseen and unprecedented emergencies, and they can do it with the highest standard of professionalism,” said Paula Lopez, former KEYT anchor, and the event’s emcee.

the award’s shape resembled an iceberg, symbolizing the honorees’ “navigation of uncharted waters.” DJ Darla Bea played each honoree’s specially-requested song — ranging from Queen to Beyoncé — as they received their award. Former Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Perie Longo then read a piece she wrote inspired by the Women of Achievement’s collective impact.

Honorees gathered for a panel discussion about their experiences. DePinto shared about her time as the county’s first executive Communications Manager, describing when her office turned on the news the morning of the Montecito Debris Flow.

“It was those jawdropping moments and just utter shock at what was happening to the community and to people’s lives,” said DePinto. “I think we all just looked at each other, we hugged it out, we shed some tears, and we were like ‘alright, let’s get back to work.

We’ve got a job to do.’”

As a leader in the county’s response and recovery efforts, Nisich reflected on how engagement efforts have evolved and the importance of tackling problems as a team.

“The leadership part of it, and the fun part of it in a way...is getting to work with everybody around the table and problemsolving, figuring it out, and then working to the benefit of the community because that’s what we’re about,” said Nisich.

Finally, Ruiz voiced her efforts in ensuring county public health communications were more communitycentered and inclusive.

“There is always something to be learned from our community, especially our underserved communities and they are ready to be heard or listened to,” said Ruiz.

“We just have to keep our ears open.”

As the panel drew to a close, attendees leaped to their feet in a standing ovation, applause ringing throughout Cabrillo Pavilion as they celebrated this year’s Women of Achievement.

“I appreciated the honorees’ courage to show vulnerability during their conversations...” said Osborn. “And how they lifted each other up.”

SB Rallies for Reproductive Rights

UNDREDS RALLIED AND MARCHED IN DOWNTOWN SANTA BARBARA on Tuesday, May 3rd, joining nationwide protests held in response to the Supreme Court’s leaked draft majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade. If announced as the court’s final decision, the move would permit individual states to ban or severely restrict residents’ access to abortion.

Speakers at the De La Guerra Plaza Rally, including a firey speech by former State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and passionate comments by SB County Supervisor Joan Hartmann, emphasized the draft contradicts the 80 percent of Americans who support Roe. Others voiced that the decision endangers a host of other reproductive health issues, including access to birth control and hormone therapy for transgender people, and will prevent many historically marginalized communities from accessing safe abortions.

“We know that this will disproportionately impact people with low incomes, who are majority Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other people of color,” said Jenna Tosh, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood CA Central Coast.

N SATURDAY NIGHT, Lorde makes a muchanticipated return to the Bowl, where she played as a precocious and half-ironically sexy-teasing adolescent in 2014. Her current album/tour/Santa Barbara carries with it the poetic justice of a career which itself has endured self-imposed hiatuses, in an era still emerging from a global hiatus.

Finally, Lorde returned in the midst of the pandemic, with Lorde last year’s powerful, richly produced, reflective and hooky Solar Power. Consider the title a sly reference to “star power,” which she knows about too well. In part, Lorde’s break in action, though partly due to COVID’s restrictions, was an effort to escape from the extreme scrutiny and glitz of celebrity and to re-invent herself. To do so, Lorde leapt off her throne for a few years, and unplugged the social media machine.

Now, at 25, Lorde is returning to California— as dreamy place and symbol of the poisonous Hollywood machinery/factory, on her own refreshed and post-adolescent terms.

A child of Croatian and Irish roots, the artist was born with the mouthful name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor and adopted a duly shortened and vaguely faux royal one-name moniker. Somehow, the New Zealander’s music can grab the reins of hooky electro-indie-pop while retaining ethereal detachment. Billy Clubbing and Bowling: Here in the humble and world-famous outpost of Santa Barbara, we have seen Billy Corgan in rooms large and small, and smaller. The head of the Smashing Pumpkins has performed, with his alt rock sensation of a band and otherwise, at the Lobero Theatre, Robertson’s Gym at UCSB, and other 805 concert venues. But some of us cling to the memory of the up-close encounter with the songster and rogue at the tiny, but mythic, Haley Street coffeehouse-turned-music venue Muddy Waters, back in 2009. The set was fortified with Pumpkins and Corgan material, but also some quirky cover songs, by the Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, and an encore of Quicksilver Messenger Service’s Long Haired Lady.

Next Friday (May 13th), Corgan and the Pumpkin gang bump up to the largest venue in town, at the Bowl. In an out of retirement and ennui since the band’s ‘90s heyday and subsequent meltdowns and reconstructions, the Pumpkins are back in action with a new synth-pop-fueled album CYR, released in 2020, and a necessarily delayed promotional tour.

Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

Beyond the Canvas Meet Solstice Artist Heather Andrew

RANTING WHAT LOCAL MIXED MEDIA ARTIST HEATHER ANDREW CALLS A “HALL PASS” FROM SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS, Santa Barbara’s Summer Solstice Celebration will return in full force this June with its colorful parade, floats, music, and dancing. As the festival’s poster and t-shirt designer, Andrew aimed to capture the 2022 theme of “Shine” while highlighting that at its core, Solstice is a celebration of and for all people.

In all of her endeavors, Andrew seeks to always be creating art. She especially enjoys crafting digital art and branding, as well as painting, although she does not consider herself a painter. She draws inspiration from her twins and the people she works with, alternating styles depending on each project’s form to “create with meaning and intent.”

Her Solstice poster reflects this idea, depicting a silhouetted individual freely stretching their open arms skyward. The background’s profile is intentionally cut off to show only the person’s eye, speaking to the saying that “the eyes are the window to the soul.” Bright colors drench the forms and floral shapes in honor of the theme “Shine,” and the Solstice’s long-lasting sunlight.

A Santa Barbara local, Andrew studied political science at UC Santa Barbara. Today, she practices freelance mixed media art, as well as works as an estate manager. She also co-owns the fragrance company Santa Barbara Scents with her daughter, Indie Ocean. Currently, Indie attends the Entrepreneurship Academy at San Marcos High School,

“Although this may feel like a female outline and profile, the intent is non-binary and non-racial,” shared Andrew.

“I really feel like these profiles could be anyone celebrating Solstice in Santa Barbara. While feministic in quality, I purposely chose a silhouette of a person who is presenting themselves freely, uninhibited and proud... You cannot know someone by their outside appearance only.”

Ultimately, Andrew hopes to spark feelings of hope, strength, pride, and enthusiasm in festival participants.

“Summer Solstice is a celebration of how Mother Earth works, it is not a celebration of political achievement or one culture or one race, this is a celebration inclusive of everyone,” added Andrew.

As volunteers and staff prepare for June’s Solstice festivities, Andrew is excited for the positive impact it will have on local businesses as well as opportunities for community connection.

“It’s a time where people can showcase their artistic talents and interests, to celebrate what Mother Earth has given us, and to celebrate the resilience and accomplishments of our community,” said Andrew. “I think people are ready to enjoy the festivities of the weekend.”

Dancing into the Heart of Santa Barbara

IROUETTING IN SYNC with history’s most enchanting classical melodies one moment, only to launch into upbeat, funky steps set to electronic music the next, no dance company boasts a range as consistently impressive as the Joffrey Ballet.

A Santa Barbara favorite, the company will return to the Granada Theatre stage at 8pm on Wednesday, May 11th, and Thursday, May 12th. Each night will feature a unique program encompassing the company’s skills, serving as a relevant reminder of dance’s power to unify.

“I think that all of us can identify with the human body, and I think that what that human body can tell in terms of abstract, in terms of narrative, in terms of beauty....you don’t need to learn a language to understand that. It is a universal language, in and of itself,” said Joffrey Ballet Artistic Director Ashley Wheater in a conversation with VOICE. For 65 years, the Joffrey Ballet has stunned audiences as “America’s company of firsts,” gaining international renown for being the first company to set ballet to rock music, appear on Time magazine’s cover, perform on American television, and perform at the White House. Today, the company continues to honor classical ballet training while pushing the limits of what dance and ballet can accomplish with innovative, contemporary choreography.

Santa Barbara is a special place for the Joffrey Ballet, whose dancers love performing at the Granada Theatre — as well as enjoy a respite from Chicago’s chilly weather. Ever supportive of the next generation of dancers, the company will also once again teach master classes at UCSB during their stay.

Three of the works to be performed were actually created at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, the company will present Chanel DaSilva’s Swing Low, a powerful wordless narrative that draws its name from the African-American spiritual song Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. It will be followed by Yoshihisa Arai’s Bolero, pairing sauntering, contemporary movements with composer Maurice Ravel’s classic piece.

Thursday’s performance will include Nicolas Blanc’s Under the Trees’ Voices, utilizing the thoughtful, swirling movements of 15 dancers to reflect upon the themes of nature and community.

INCE DEVOTING HIMSELF TO DANCE AT THE AGE OF SIX, Ashley Wheater has gained international acclaim as both a dancer and the Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet. A graduate of The Royal Ballet School, Wheater has danced with icons such as Rudolf Nureyev, Robert Joffrey, and Gerald Arpino. He was also a member of the London Festival Ballet, Australian Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and of course, the Joffrey Ballet.

In 2007, Wheater became the Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet after previously acting as Assistant to the Artistic Director at the San Francisco Ballet.

Over the past 15 years, he has guided the company with skill and direction, promoting collaborations with new artists and adding to the dancers’ repertoire.

Wheater took the time to speak with VOICE Magazine about his career and current experiences with the Joffrey Ballet.

VOICE: What inspired you to first pursue ballet?

Additional highlights include Wednesday’s performance of Arai’s Élégie Pas, and Liam Scarlett’s Vespertine, which demonstrates the company’s chemistry through fast-paced ensemble and couple dances.

On Thursday, as a part of its centennial celebration of choreographer and Joffrey Ballet co-founder Gerald Arpino, the company will also perform Arpino’s Birthday Variations, highlighting the company’s breathtaking classical dancing skills. The night will conclude on a more modern note with Itzik Galili’s The Sofa, relating a love triangle story, and Justin Peck’s The Times are Racing, mixing graceful movement with fast-paced electronic music.

Through these two nights, the Joffrey Ballet aims to transport audiences through the profoundly moving and self-expressive world of music and dance. It also hopes to engage all community members, including those who may not be familiar with or hesitant about ballet.

“I would say come and see what we’re doing because I am sure that we can show you a very different side to what you think the art form is,” said Wheater. “And I just think what is beautiful about the company is that they are so able to engage with the audiences that come to see us perform.”

Continued from page 14 listen to opera, my father was passionate about theater. And so even though we came from a very humble household, art always played a very key part of that. My mother was also an artist herself, and she went on to teach creative design, ceramics. So I think our household was always filled with very open ideas, and there was a lot of freedom for us to choose what we wanted to do.

I used to go and pick up my sisters from this little village hall in the middle of England. And I’d stand at the door, and the idea of being able to move to music was just incredibly impactful for me. And so I asked if I could start dancing, and that was when I was six years old. And I’ve never questioned it.

And I’m 63 now.

V: Truly a lifelong passion.

W: It truly is a lifelong passion, and I feel so fortunate and so blessed to have worked with some incredible people in the world, that gave me so much in my career as a dancer. And now as the director, I want to make sure that the dancers in the Joffrey Ballet have that same support, and that I’m an advocate for them and for their careers. It’s amazingly rewarding.

V: Do you have any specific experiences or highlights of your dancing career that you consider to be formative?

W: Rudolf Nureyev gave me an extraordinary amount of opportunities when I was really young. I think that when Robert Joffrey brought me to America to dance with the Joffrey Ballet in the 80s was fantastic. And then Helgi Tómasson, brought me to San Francisco where I danced and was his assistant for 18 years...

been incredible. Equally incredible has been dancing in the outback in Australia, in an open plot of land, and performing to people who probably never would get ballet.

V: Do you have a favorite ballet you’ve danced in or choreographed?

W: I love them all, and I would say that of course, I love dancing Swan Lake because I always thought it was such an amazing work for a classical dancer. But I’ve had incredible pieces created by some of the world’s greatest choreographers.

Right now, my favorite thing is the program that we’re performing in Chicago which is George Balanchine’s Serenade, alongside a world premiere by Cathy Marston of Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck.

V: What do you consider to be your main priorities as Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet?

W: I think that my responsibility, my role is to nurture a new generation, not only of dancers but also choreographers.

I think [also] designers and musicians make our art form relative, I think that’s very important. I think that we need to expand opportunities for everybody...

There’s a big conversation right now about BIPOC artists and giving them opportunities, and I’m really proud of Joffrey.

For the last 12 years, we’ve had a program called Winning Works, which is for BIPOC artists. And in that time, we’ve had over 35 Black and brown choreographers, designers, and musicians come and create, and I think they’re really important programs, and so I look forward to developing that even more...

We have a saying at Joffrey that it’s “Joffrey for all,” and I really do feel the more people find that there is total access to the arts, the stronger we will grow as human beings because we need the arts.

RDERS FOR U.S. DURABLE GOODS – long-lasting goods such as computers and cars – rose in March, and business investment rebounded after the first decline in a year, signaling that U.S. economic activity is still on a growth path, despite the Ukraine invasion and record inflation. Who knows what will happen with energy prices?

Orders advanced for the sixth time in the last seven months. What’s more, the initially reported 2.2 percent decline in new orders in February was revised to show a smaller 1.7 percent drop, the government said Tuesday [April 26, 2022].

Businesses are investing more because they are upbeat about future growth.

And inflation may be peaking with the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge—the PCE index. Over the past twelve months, the personal consumption price index has climbed 6.6 percent, up from 6.4 percent in February, the government said Friday [April 29, 2022].

That’s the steepest increase since 1981.

Yet a narrower measure of inflation that omits volatile food and energy costs, known as the core PCE, rose by just 0.3 percent in March for the second month in a row. That matched the Wall Street forecast. What’s more, the rate of core

inflation in the past year slipped to 5.2 percent from 5.3 percent, marking the first month-to-month decline in more than a year.

This is huge folks. It’s almost as if U.S. businesses don’t see problems ahead with energy shortages because of a prolonged Ukrainian war – for the U.S. economy, at least. Business investment has increased ten percent in the past year and there’s little evidence that companies are sharply cutting back.

And consumers’ strong demand for durable goods is a sign they are not so pessimistic. While some data from the Conference Board’s consumer confidence survey showed a dip in consumer confidence this month, households were eager to buy big-ticket items like motor vehicles, television sets, and clothing dryers within six months.

Consumers were also inclined to buy a house, despite surging mortgage rates and record home prices.

“Consumer confidence fell slightly in April, after a modest increase in March,” said Lynn Franco, Senior Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. “The Present Situation Index declined, but remains quite high, suggesting the economy continued to expand in early Q2. Expectations, while

“The U.S. LEI rose again in March despite headwinds from the war in Ukraine,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, Senior Director of Economic Research at The Conference Board. “This broad-based improvement signals economic growth is likely to continue through 2022 despite volatile stock prices and weakening business and consumer expectations. The Conference Board projects 3.0 percent year-over-year U.S. GDP growth in 2022, which is slower than the 5.6 percent pace of 2021, but still well above pre-COVID trend.”

So, by investing in their future, businesses are betting on a better future for Americans.

1st Place the well deserved First Place Trophy. They celebrated their win in a great big way at the Closing Ceremony and the party that followed. The 2022 Les Voiles de St. Barts may be in the history books … but my bragging in behalf of this Santa Barbara sailing team is not!

ICTURE YOURSELVES on the Island of St. Barth, a location surrounded by everything you could wish for... sun, warm winds, sandy beaches, dining on French foods and wines overlooking spectacular ocean views in “the Monaco of the Caribbean Islands.” Not only that, it’s also the location of one of the world’s most exciting and challenging international yacht races, Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille. Santa Barbara’s resident and sailor extraordinaire, Bernard Girot and his team flew to the island of St. Barth to represent Santa Barbara in the competition! Now, last but not least, prepare yourselves for some shameless bragging – my very favorite thing to do!

Windy days, the bluest of blue waters, energetic sailing, and the challenges of ocean currents very different from those along the West Coast drew Girot and crew to Les Voiles on April 17th to the 23rd. Girot, the owner of the Farr 400 (40 foot) yacht Rock & Roll moored in the Santa Barbara harbor, made good on his promise after participating in the 2019 Les Voiles race to return to the ‘next race’ – which, as fate and the Coronavirus would have it, was not to be until 2022!

Victorious in the phenomenal off-shore racing yacht Pata Negra, a chartered Lombard IRC 46 designed in France, the Santa Barbara based crew excelled in every sailing condition possible with winds in the 20’s and considerable seas. Girot and his team simply rocked the world famous Les Voiles regatta with a 6-0 record never relinquishing its first place grip on the CSA 5’s six race series. Finally, standing tall at the closing ceremonies, Girot and crew walked away with

Summerland Gas Station Becomes a Fuel Depot The only gas station in Summerland has a new owner and is now a Fuel Depot. It’s a fresh look, a nice crew, and it stocks food and essentials along with all the beverages, snacks, beach gear, wine, and many types of beers. Fuel prices are 40 to 60 cents lower than others in the area. Remember though, the majors like 76, Chevron, and Shell have special gas additives if you feel your car needs that.

Cultural Night Downtown

ST THURSDAY is an evening of art and culture in downtown Santa Barbara that takes place on the first Thursday of each month.

Participating art venues offer free access to art in a fun and social environment from 5-8pm. 1st Thursday venues also provide additional attractions, such as live music, artist receptions, lectures, wine tastings, and hands-on activities.

Additionally, State Street comes alive on 1st Thursday with performances and interactive activities.

A Stage For The Whole Community

Renovation of the Band Shell will revitalize Plaza del Mar for music, drama, dance, and celebratory events. As a public park, the City provides low-cost access for non-profit organizations that serve a broad cross-section of the community.

Project Partners And Funding

The PARC Foundation The Parks and Recreation Community (PARC) Foundation is partnered with the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department to raise the funds needed to achieve Band Shell renovation.

All the funding needed to complete the project is $45,000.

A Parks and Recreation Department and Parc Foundation Project Established as a City park in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and outdoor gatherings. The Plaza del Mar Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band.

Egyptological and more popular perceptions of Nubia and the Kushite Dynasty (c. 747-654 BCE) have framed Kush as a periphery to civilized Egypt. To what extent was Nubia a “backwater” to “effete and sophisticated” Egypt? In this discussion, Stuart Tyson Smith will explore how recent archaeological work at Tombos and elsewhere demonstrates that Nubia was not an unsophisticated backwater, but instead part of an international elite culture that spanned Nubia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The Kushite civilization adapted features from Egypt and the Mediterranean world and integrated them with local practices and belief systems to create a new and vibrant African tradition.
