with this tour. That is the overarching message that is reflective of this tour we are embarking on.”

Founded by dancer Alvin Ailey in 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has been designated “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” by the United States Congress. The company’s success grew out of its original performances at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, spearheaded by Ailey’s innovative choreography designed to amplify African American culture and history through dance.

To date, the company has shared its talents with approximately 25 million people across 71 countries and 48 states. Its performances continue to incorporate dance numbers from across Ailey’s body of work as well as highlight contemporary choreographers.

“Dance, to me, is a positive expression of the human spirit,” explained Ailey in an interview included in the company’s 2019 tribute video Becoming Ailey.

“And to me dancers are people who reflect life. They’re Black people, white people, people in trouble. They are memories and visions of people I’ve known.”

Several of the works to be presented with UCSB Arts & Lectures’ Creating Hope programming are by the

company’s Artistic Director, Robert Battle. Named one of the “Masters of AfricanAmerican Choreography” by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Battle has contributed to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a choreographer for 23 years, serving as Artistic Director for the past ten.

Santa Barbara’s April 13th “Robert Battle 10th Anniversary” program will honor Battle’s work, including performances of In/Side, Ella, Takademe, Love Stories, and more. Many pieces are set to the music of renowned Black musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Stevie Wonder, enhancing the dancers’ joyful, energetic, and heartfelt movements. Battle will also present his most recent piece, For Four, set to trumpeter Wynton Marsalis’ upbeat jazz.

“Dance really is about being close together,” explained Battle in the company’s website statement about the piece.

“When we were in the studio making this dance, you could feel the electricity of what we did together, the way we felt so free to express ourselves in

the way that we do, and so For Four is a manifestation of that expression.”

The evening will conclude with Ailey’s Revelations — a masterpiece capturing African American culture through a series of poignant and lively dances set to African-American spirituals, gospel, and blues.

The company’s April 14th program will also feature Revelations, as well as Lazarus, the first twoact ballet performed by the company. Created by hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris, the work follows Ailey’s life story, emphasizing how the racism and inequality he encountered continues to persist in current society.

SB Maritime Museum Presents

Whales Are

Superheroes!

VER-PRESENT BENEATH THE WATER’S SURFACE, THEN BURSTING FORTH FROM CHOPPY WAVES, whales are often noted for their raw power, size, and beauty. Yet these majestic creatures also play a key role in the fight against climate change, as revealed by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s Whales Are Superheroes! Launching April 14th, four exhibitions spanning educational displays, an immersive undersea experience, and almost 700 studentmade works of art will share whales’ remarkable impact on our Local student artwork in Whales are Superheroes: Saving community the Planet One CO2 Molecule at a Time and the world.

“This channel is so special because of the marine life out here. We do call it the Galapagos of the North Pacific, and the whales are very special,” said SBMM Executive Director Greg Gorga. “We’re all about the human interaction with the ocean, so to see the exhibits that are talking about how whales affect climate change is really just perfect for the Maritime Museum.”

The museum’s programming coincides with the launch of Impact: Climate Change & the Urgency of Now, a series of climate change-focused events presented by the Environmental Alliance of Santa Barbara County Museums. Teaming up with Holly Lohuis, a marine biologist and marine educator, SBMM decided to focus on whales and how they help our planet.

Currently, Lohuis is working alongside SBMM and several local groups to establish a whale heritage site in the Santa Barbara Channel under the World Cetacean Alliance. This effort would protect the whales that call our

region home for generations to come while also supporting the well-being of other marine life.

“This was hugely collaborative between the curatorial and the education, and that’s the direction we want to go in general with our exhibits,” explained Emily Falke, SBMM’s Director of Collections and Exhibitions, adding they hope visitors of all ages will become aware of how important whales are and their impact on climate change.

Leading this exciting programming is SBMM’s newest permanent exhibit, Whales Are Superheroes! With its fun, comic book-inspired design, the display explains the role whales play in supporting undersea ecosystems by helping move nutrients from the seafloor to the surface. This directly combats climate change, as the nutrients then let surface-level phytoplankton convert CO2 into oxygen, fighting against global warming. The exhibit also highlights how whales absorb hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon within their bodies, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere.

Supporting this exhibit is Whale of a Tale, an immersive, studentcreated experience open through May 15th that lets visitors explore life underwater through children’s eyes.

To curate the experience, Lohuis and art educator Michael Matheson shared educational videos about whales with area classrooms, asking students to respond with art depicting whales or other ocean scenes.

Students responded enthusiastically, motivating SBMM to invite all children in kindergarten through sixth grade, throughout Santa Barbara County and beyond, to send in their original art.

The museum received over 500 submissions, which were used in transforming SBMM’s Munger Theater into an interactive, underwater realm entirely imagined and realized through children’s art.

The final exhibition, The Wonder of Whales: Two Artist’s Perspectives, shares two local artists’ reflections on whales’ inherent beauty. John Baran’s paintings are informed by his personal encounters with whales in the wild, blending realism and creativity to capture their energy. Kelly Clause’s paintings also possess a

All of these exhibitions culminate with a free webinar with marine biologist Holly Lohuis at 7pm on Thursday, April 21st. Titled Santa Barbara Channel’s Whales and Their Climate Connection, Lohuis will review how whales support the Santa Barbara Channel, ocean, and the importance of saving these remarkable animals from human impacts.

“Whales have the power to inspire millions of people to care about our oceans,” commented Lohuis in an SBMM statement. “Let’s dive in together and learn more about our local whales.”

“Kids learn and retain information in all different ways,” explained SBMM Education Director Lis Perry. “I feel like teaching them art, and getting them to relax and really think about whales out in the ocean and out here in their own backyard, I think it’s important; I feel like they learn better.”

These efforts to engage students through art continue with Whales are Superheroes: Saving the Planet One CO2 Molecule at a Time. SB County Poetry Slam Winners Announced

ICKING OFF NATIONAL POETRY MONTH WITH A SHOWCASE OF YOUNG VOICES AND TALENT, the 2022 Santa Barbara County Poetry Slam was held virtually on March 31st. Presented through the SB County Education Office (SBCEO) Educational Technology Services Department, the Poetry Slam winners were determined on the basis of their works’ content and performance elements. The winning students will perform their poems at SBCEO’s Juvenile Youth Empowerment Summit this October.

First place went to Makai Copado, an 11th grader at Pioneer Valley High School, for performing What We’ve Done Is What We Know and I’ll Love You Forever. Madeline Miller, a San Marcos High School senior, won second place for The One About Sea Anemones and Song for My Sister. Third place went to Righetti High School senior Steven Villanueva, who performed Peaceful, Screaming, Golden Gleam and Hammer of Justice™.

NatureTrack Film Festival Postpones Fifth Anniversary Festival to 2023

N ORDER TO FULLY CELEBRATE THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATURETRACK FILM FESTIVAL COMING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC, the festival’s 2022 dates have been pushed to 2023. NatureTrack Film Festival Founder and E.D. Sue Eisaguirre shared the announcement with sponsors, filmmakers, and supporters in a written statement sent last week.

“In order to move forward from both earlier and continuing impacts of the pandemic and reestablish our home base, we feel it is prudent and pragmatic to give our nascent efforts room to rebound so we can return with a fabulous 5th anniversary of the NTFF,” explained Eisaguirre.

FTER COMPLETING A TEN WEEKS-LONG, 30-HOUR PROGRAM, a new group of community volunteers have joined the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum as docents. These new docents are now certified to lead group museum tours, assist with museum events, and answer visitors’ questions. The museum’s Docent Training Program included required readings, in-class presentations, and “on-deck” experiences at the museum. Local experts on the museum’s exhibits also presented to the group, including Executive Director Greg Gorga, a surfing expert, and individuals with navigational, military, and other related SBMM exhibit knowledge. The next Docent Training Program is scheduled for January 2023, but community members can volunteer year-round.

At the Arroyo Hondo Reserve, filming The Accessible Outdoors with Mitchka Saberi, Steve Schultz, and Francisco Lopez. Saberi & Lopez are the principals of Golden Cage Films.

Amidst this postponement, the NatureTrack/Golden Cage Films co-produced documentary The Accessible Outdoors is continuing to be screened at film festivals. Already, the film has received multiple recognitions, including a Silver Award for Short Doc from the Hollywood Independent Filmmaker Awards & Festival, Best Documentary Film from the Oregon Short Film Festival, and nominations from the Los Angeles Short Film Festival for “Best of the Fest.”

Staff had to wait until construction wrapped before starting the speed survey.

California law requires speed surveys to establish enforceable speed limits on public roadways.

MTD to Make Temporary Service Reductions As of Monday, April 25th

E

FFECTIVE MONDAY, APRIL 25TH, 2022, SANTA BARBARA MTD WILL BE TEMPORARILY LOWERING SERVICE LEVELS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE SYSTEM RELIABILITY. During the COVID-19 pandemic, transit operators nationwide and many other industries have experienced workforce shortages, and MTD is no different. While MTD continues to recruit aggressively for bus operators, the agency has experienced a confluence of retirements and normal attrition causing a drop in the number of available bus operators. This drop coupled with the Omicron surge has meant that various bus trips are occasionally cancelled, causing uncertainty for passengers.

In order to adjust service to a level that the MTD workforce can reliably cover on a daily basis, MTD staff have made surgical changes to service levels that will go into effect as of Monday, April 25th, 2022. While these reductions are designed to last for the spring and summer period, MTD will notify the public about any future service adjustments.

“The reliability of our schedules is crucial and due to the current labor shortage the temporary reduction of service is a necessary step,” said MTD General Manager Jerry Estrada. “We hope that these temporary reductions will allow us the time to staff up appropriately and return to higher levels of service later this year.”

The changes are different for each bus line, so passengers are encouraged to review the schedules of the lines they ride in advance of April 25th. Temporary schedule guides are being printed and hard copies will be available at the Transit Center and on-board buses by next week. In the meantime, the public can get further details at https://sbmtd.gov/reduced/.

Young Performers Invited to Audition for The Sound of Music

O YOU KNOW A YOUNG ASPIRING ACTOR? The Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA) will be hosting auditions for young performers for its upcoming production of The Sound of Music from 10am to 12pm on Saturday, April 16th. Auditioning individuals should prepare and memorize about 60 seconds of a song from a musical. An accompanist will be provided, and performers are asked to bring sheet music in the correct key.

Performers of all races and ethnicities are invited to audition for the roles of the von Trapp children: Friedrich (looks 13-15); Louisa (looks 12-14); Kurt (looks 10-12); Brigitta (looks 9-11); Marta (looks 7-9); and Gretl (looks 5-7). As these are major roles, cast actors must be available to attend all rehearsals performances of The Sound of Music (May 31 – July 31) in Santa Maria.

Para ajustar el servicio a un nivel que la fuerza laboral de MTD pueda cubrir de manera confiable todos los días, el personal de MTD ha realizado cambios quirúrgicos en los niveles de servicio que entrarán en vigencia a partir del lunes 25 de abril de 2022. Si bien estas reducciones están diseñadas para durar para el período de primavera y verano, MTD notificará al público sobre cualquier ajuste futuro del servicio.

“La confiabilidad de nuestros horarios es crucial y debido a la actual escasez de mano de obra, la reducción temporal del servicio es un paso necesario,” dijo el gerente general de MTD, Jerry Estrada. “Esperamos que estas reducciones temporales nos den el tiempo necesario para incorporar el personal adecuado y volver a niveles más altos de servicio a finales de este año”.

Los cambios son diferentes para cada línea de autobús, por lo que se recomienda a los pasajeros que revisen los horarios de las líneas en las que viajan antes del 25 de abril de 2022. Se están imprimiendo guías de horarios temporales y habrá copias impresas disponibles en el Centro de Tránsito y a bordo de autobuses la próxima semana. T APPEARS THERE WILL BE A PILE-UP on the cultural highway next week. Santa Barbara's live musical calendar is back in action, an entirely positive upshot.

But as occasionally happens, there are difficult choices to be made on a given night in town.

Case in point: next Tuesday finds a convergence of highly recommended concerts. Take your pick, between a world premiere Jennifer Koh and Davóne Tines from contemporary music heroine/ violinist Jennifer Koh and bassbaritone Davóne Tines, a Lobero visit by Americana heroine Aoife O’Donovan, and the CAMA-hosted local debut by the English Baroque Orchestra, with famed maestro Sir John Eliot Gardiner at the helm, at the Granada Theater. Any or all of the above major events could be of the must-see category. What's an eclectic music aficionado to do?

HERS UPDATE: For those keeping track, O’Donovan’s eagerly awaited return to the venue embrace of the Lobero, on the heels of her acclaimed Joe Henry-produced pandemic era-album Age of Apathy, comes as a timely follow-up to last week’s stellar concert in this blessed room by Sarah Jarosz. Those uniquely gifted singer-songwriters (and in Jarosz’ case, ace picker) are 2/3 of the female power trio I’m with Her, along with Sara Watkins, who has also graced the Lobero stage many times.

For over a decade, A&L has enabled Koh to bring her special projects through town, including her fascinating Bach and Beyond, Bridge to Beethoven, and Shared Madness endeavors. Last Sunday, she won a Grammy for her pandemic era Alone Together album/streaming project.

Here, the pair will unveil Everything Rises, a multi-media exploration of life and struggles of people of color, in the arts and society, generally.

GOING HIS OWN WAYS: In one of this season’s “too-big-for-the-room” bookings, pop royalty Lindsey Buckingham is headed back to town, in solo mode at the Lobero Theater next Friday (April 15th). An SRO crowd is expected. When last we caught the multi-talented popster/tasty guitarist and (former?) Fleetwood Mac-er, he appeared at the Arlington Theater in 2017 with fellow Macster Christine McVie, promoting their fine collaborative album On With the Show. The evening bristled with all the tuneful and musical firepower we want from the pair, with Buckingham as ringmaster.

That was then, this is now. Just before that show, Buckingham talked casually but confidently about his presumed upcoming musical life. “My guess is that we will be rehearsing for that the end of the summer, 2018, and will be up and running in the fall, and start doing dates then. That’s all I know about the status of Fleetwood Mac. No one’s Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

HRONICLING THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF MICHAEL DOWNEY AS A GAY, AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN, AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FATHER, the Marjorie Luke Theatre’s latest, free Virtual Concert Series installment is now streaming. Titled The War Shirt and directed by Rod Lathim, the one-man play is written and performed by Downey himself, inviting community members to witness his personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

“I hope that people would come away with an appreciation of history,” shared Downey. “I would hope that they would come away with a greater appreciation for the LGBTQ+ community.”

A familiar presence in the local arts community, Downey taught in Santa Barbara City College’s Theater Arts Department for 28 years and has been a member of the Santa Barbara Dance Alliance and Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of SB. He also danced and taught courses at The Dance Warehouse, a studio formerly located in downtown Santa Barbara.

His play, The War Shirt, was over 25 years in the making. Growing up and into his adult life, Downey’s identity as a gay man placed a strain on his relationship with his father, Bill Downey, who wrote for the Santa Barbara News-Press in the 1970s. Yet the night before he died, Bill accepted and embraced his son’s identity, voicing support for his dreams.

Downey knew that he was granted the type of closure many individuals are not fortunate enough to receive. Compelled to share that experience, he began gathering feedback from Michael Katz, a Boxtales Theatre Company founding member, and Rod Lathim, Marjorie Luke Theatre Board President Emeritus, to organize his lived experiences into a play.

The result is a moving, hour-long performance spanning Downey’s life from childhood to the present.

Filmed before a live audience, the performance largely rests on Downey’s storytelling skills as he alternates between narration and reliving memories.

With a compelling mix of sincerity and humor, Downey shares his early confrontations with gender roles and social expectations, his journey to realizing his identity, how he discovered dance, and more. Downey’s relationship with his father parallels this narrative, allowing for reflection on his father’s shifting character.

“I felt that as I was looking at my own evolution, that my journey also needed to look at the ways in which my father evolved himself,” explained Downey.

Enhancing Downey’s personal story, he also shares his family’s history; explaining that his ancestry includes African American slaves and Native American people.

The play is further punctuated by references to the significant historical movements happening around Downey in the 1960s and 70s, and projected photos of Downey and his family.

This historical component ultimately merges with Downey’s relationship with his father, as it is revealed the titular “war shirt” was a traditional garment specially made for his father as he worked to honor and reconnect with his Native American heritage.

“I think that there is a constant interface between the past, the present, and the future,” shared Downey. “If we’re going to create a future that is progressive, that is innovative, that supports the members of the community, I really think it’s vital that we honor our own history.”

OSSIBILITIES ARE NEARLY ENDLESS when it comes to experiencing Santa Barbara’s annual Summer Solstice Festival.

This year, as the parade returns, not to State but to Santa Barbara Street (June 25th at noon), and the workshop opens to the public (May 11th at the Community Arts Workshop), opportunities to participate abound.

Want to try your had at designing the poster and t-shirt? Time’s nearly up but if you are quick, you can submit an entry by April 8th.

This year’s theme is Shine - so go ahead and do just that!

Want to be part of a float ensemble? Make a puppet? Help with costumes? Sign up for the Solstice Workshop.

It takes a village to create the Workshop, Parade, and Festival. To make that happen, there are paid artists-in-residence who work with the community to build the floats and make costumes and masks, plus paid staff who organize logistics, along with volunteers and participants who all work together from now until after the parade and festival. Solstice is currently looking for Festival Assistants, Volunteer Coordinator, Registrar, Assistant Program Director, Workshop Technical Assistants, Special Project Assistants, Parade Monitors, and Artists in Residence.

Now in it’s 48th year, Solstice has many traditions and people assume many roles, with more emerging every year.

HE BIG NEWS OF THE WEEK IS THE 2022 OPENING DAY AT THE SANTA BARBARA YACHT CLUB, an event that included more than just that one day! The celebration actually lasted the entire weekend, beginning on Friday, April 1st with the last blast finally fading into the evening hours on Sunday. With certainty I can assure you that, at least by the looks of the exhausted celebrants that limped away, this was one blow-out three day party!

All classes of boats were included and, at the conclusion, the winners of each class were awarded a wine glass commemorating the 150th year and a bottle of wine from Fess Parker wineries (a side note - one of those classic wine glasses and a bottle of wine landed at our house as a First Place Trophy). The overall winner of the Opening Day race was Taxi Dancer, one of the most spectacular sailboats in the Santa Barbara harbor.

The first event of the weekend began Friday evening with a gathering in front of the newly renovated clubhouse for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the 150th year of the Yacht Club’s existence.

An admiring crowd stood in the evening sun, bottles of champagne popping to toast the completion of the remodel.

The clubhouse, during the Yacht Club’s earliest days, was a tiny 32 x 20 foot building at the foot of Stearns Wharf to The new plaque honoring the Yacht Club’s 150th year accommodate its 50 members.

John Peck Stearns used it as his headquarters during the construction of the pier (also 150 years ago in 1872) and gave the newly founded club its use. After a series of clubhouses and meeting places, the present clubhouse, constructed in 1966, took its place on the beach where it stands today. In anticipation of the 150th celebratory year, the building has been retrofitted and the interior spaces remodeled.

The day closed with more congratulations to the trophy winners and to the hard-working committees that helped to make the weekend the success that it was. Commodore Parker concluded, “This would not have been possible without all of the volunteers who participated in the planning and execution of this special weekend. We’re here to celebrate the next 150 years with a clubhouse in Bristol condition, also due to the long term commitment and hard work of both volunteers and staff. Many thanks to you all!”

On Saturday, the Yacht Club’s deck was the location of the Opening Day breakfast buffet for the benefit of members and guests from yacht clubs up and down the coast. Mimosas warmed the spirits of those who attended despite the blustery weather on both land and sea. At 10am Commodore Eli Parker invited the guests into the newly fashioned dining areas for the Opening Day ceremony greeting visiting dignitaries, honoring the incoming board, and acknowledging the work of so many to update the club’s facilities.

The Opening Day Race was the feature activity of the next and final day of the 150th anniversary weekend. I’m told there were approximately 40 boats on the water with the weather even chillier than the day before... that didn’t seem to deter the enthusiasm of the racers, however! As is the tradition, Father Larry Gosselin, along with Father Dan Lackie of the Old Mission Santa Barbara, blessed all vessels in the harbor during the Parade of Fleet honoring Commodore Parker. Despite the choppy seas and often mercurial winds shifting one way or the other, over 30 boats could be seen bobbing about on the water in front of the Yacht Club.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2ND - Thousands on the Isla Vista streets for the unsanctioned Deltopia. MCI (multi casualty incident) declared - multiple medical emergencies including multiple severe traumas. Many balconies are overcrowded.

A successful catch by the crowd after this balcony backdrop during the unpermitted Deltopia in Isla Vista Saturday drew roaring cheers. Thousands of people came out, and for the weekend there were six arrests.

Unsanctioned Deltopia Street Party Hits Isla Vista

FRIDAY, APRIL 1ST - Celebrating 150 years, a special plaque is unveiled at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club Friday.

In 1872 the club was formed at the same time Stearns Wharf was built. This club is the second oldest in North America. A new tribute flag is now flying above the waterfront building.

SATURDAY, APRIL 2ND - Santa Barbara yacht season opens with the “Blessing of the Fleet” by Pastor Father Dan Lackie and Father Larry Gosselin from the Old Mission. Ceremony took place off of Stearns Wharf with a processional out of the harbor. The yacht club and the wharf are celebrating 150 years.

SB Bowl Approved to Host Additional 2022 Shows The Santa Barbara Bowl could have 44 shows this season. Up to seven additional dates were approved by the Board of Supervisors, beyond the normal permit limit. No formal announcements yet, but the Bowl is currently planning a show with Music Academy of the West, and a mariachi festival during this summer’s Old Spanish Days.

Local Leaders Review Cruise Ship Protocol WEDNESDAY MARCH 3OTH - On board visit - Santa Barbara Mayor Randy Rowse, along with other top city hall and waterfront leaders visited the Majestic Princess cruise ship Wednesday.

They met the Captain and safety team. They toured the vessel and discussed health and environmental protocols required for an approval for this port visit. That included current COVID rules, sewage disposal at sea, and exhaust scrubbers to reduce air pollution.

SB Trust for Historic Preservation Celebrates 2022 Community Award Winners

OMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND DEDICATION WERE LIFTED UP when the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation hosted its 2022 Community Awards and Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, March 26th at the Alhecama Theatre. The event honored eleven awardees for their efforts in historic preservation over the past year.

This year, SBTHP presented their highest and most prestigious honor, the Pearl Chase Historic Preservation and Conservation Award to the late M. Kay Van Horn for her dedication in preserving the history of Santa Barbara’s Nihonmachi (Japan Town) and as a member of the Asian American Affinity Group, responsible for annual programming such as the Asian American Film Series and Asian American Neighborhood Festival.

The 2022 George and Vivian Obern Preservation and Stewardship Award was presented to the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department for the restoration of the Cabrillo Pavilion. Originally built in 1926, the building has been meticulously restored with new amenities for the public including a new restaurant downstairs.

Strong Job Growth Continues

THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE SLID to 3.6 percent in March from 3.8 percent in February, the government said Friday. The big news was that with an additional 431,000 nonfarm payroll jobs added in March, a total of 2.273 million jobs have been created over the past four months.

We are already seeing what a ‘new normal’ might look like in the years to come. Government has had to step up spending to tame the pandemic, just as it did during Roosevelt’s New Deal to recover from the Great Depression. Now, President Biden’s proposed $5.8 trillion budget for the 2023 fiscal year must address what might become a prolonged European war.

Art review: Tipping Point: Too Much/Not Enough, through April 23rd at Arts Fund Gallery

HREE YEARS AGO, had things gone according to plan, the climate change-themed exhibition Tipping Point: Too Much/Not Enough would have graced the walls of the venerable Arts Fund Gallery, that last bastion of art and “funk” in the ever-swankier Funk Zone. Alas, a few hurdles intervened, including the closing of the gallery’s long-standing Funk Zone venue and the culture-crushing force of the pandemic.

With the Arts Fund reappearing, Phoenix-like, in a much better State Street location recently (in the former Sur La Table space), Tipping Point – curated by artist Cynthia Martin and featuring several notable Santa Barbara-based artists – was reborn, and in a much more spacious, walk-up friendly gallery home. Ironically, though, the very subject and underscoring theme of the show, has only increased in its urgency and ominous portent in the intervening years.

Dour as that theme might seem, the sometimes vibrant palettes and approaches to art-making, Susan Tibbles – Kaboom Town jolts of humor, and other leavening agents keep a relatively lively spirit in the air. The show mostly reminds us that art bearing or reflecting bad news doesn’t necessarily have to fully embrace the dark side of a prevailing story. At times, escapist tactics can lure us into the issue advocacy game more effectively than doomsday naysaying.

If her paintings weren’t so sensually appealing, the eco-thematic backdrops might assume a grimmer demeanor.

Gifted assemblage artist Susan Tibbles is no stranger to wrapping potentially dark themes with witty accoutrements, scraps, and well-placed non sequiturs, as she has in her prolific assemblage career and in commissioned pieces for the Los Angeles Times Op/Ed pages. Simple touches can work small wonders, as with her piece Mask, with an ever-familiar pandemic-era mask impaled by multiple pins and loaded up with a message of collective pain and inconvenience.
