Representing some of tomorrow’s finest orchestral musicians, these alums - selected as Keston MAX (Music Academy Exchange) Fellows - were chosen by audition to train with Sir Simon Rattle and the orchestra in London during the 2018-2021 Summer Festivals, but many were prevented from doing so by the pandemic. The conductor’s newly scheduled Santa Barbara visit is expressly designed to redress this balance, while also crowning the Academy’s unprecedented four-year LSO partnership and kicking off its 75th anniversary celebrations.

The residency concludes with a major event to mark the Academy’s milestone anniversary next year. The 36 Keston MAX “All-Stars,” join the full LSO for a festive 75th Anniversary Community Concert with over 150 musicians on stage for a pairing of works by Grainger and Bruckner’s magisterial Fourth Symphony, “Romantic” on March 27th at 7pm.

The Music Academy is committed to community access, so all tickets for both the Family Concert and the 75th Anniversary Community Concert will be available for $10 each, or free of charge to children accompanying ticketed adults.

Mooy, who attended the Academy as a trumpet fellow in 1985, is currently a professor of music at Santa Barbara City College, where he conducts both the SBCC Symphony Orchestra and the Lunch Break Jazz Ensemble and teaches courses on music technology, jazz studies, and music appreciation.

“I’ve taken what I learned at the Academy and brought it home,” the Santa Barbara bornand-raised Mooy related. “What the Academy gave me, Santa Barbara is benefiting from.”

To honor James Mooy for his work at SBCC, the Music Academy offered SBCCSO members free tickets to the 75th Anniversary Community Concert featuring the London Symphony Orchestra and the Academy’s Keston MAX AllStars. Music Academy will also be inviting SBCCSO members to attend a free masterclass of their choosing during the 75th Anniversary Summer Festival. n

ERVING UP A SAVORY SELECTION OF FRIED CHICKEN, MAC N’ CHEESE, AND OTHER FAMILIAR “COMFORT FOOD” ITEMS, Soul Bites’ menu flavors downtown Santa Barbara’s eatery scene with a taste of the South. Tucked away in Music Alley’s former location, the restaurant is the realization of co-owner Stirling Nix-Bradley’s dream to honor Black food culture; serving classic dishes with a healthy twist in a community-focused space.

Originally from Oxnard, Stirling has acted on the stage and screen for over 30 years. To supplement this career, he turned to working in Los Angeles restaurants, including the Roxbury and Georgia, among others. Eventually, he went into management, overseeing BLT Steak on Sunset Boulevard.

All the while, Stirling dreamed of opening his own restaurant that would honor the dishes he ate with his family.

“We’re paying homage to that, what I grew up eating,” shared Stirling. “When I went to my aunt’s house, my grandmother’s, what she had on the stove — I was missing that.”

Stirling has teamed with his wife, Rose, to realize this dream. Rose has worked in the restaurant industry for over 30 years, and also is experienced at event coordinating and planning. Previously, she worked with the Dallas Mavericks and managed theater district

restaurants in New York City before meeting Stirling.

After receiving a scholarship from LAbased New School Consulting group, Stirling and Rose decided to launch Soul Bites as a food component of Music Alley.

Now that Music Alley has closed, the couple is investigating taking over the entire space and transforming it into a community-focused space — perhaps hosting dance nights, comedy, or even business meetings.

“We want to just sit in it and breathe in it for a little bit, and let the community dictate what they need from the space and work that way,” said Rose.

Customers can enjoy Soul Bites while soaking up downtown Santa Barbara’s sunshine on their airy patio and parklet. True to its name, the restaurant provides a wide selection of classic comfort foods, including smoked and barbeque chicken mac n’ cheese, collard greens, smoked fingerling potatoes, and chicken tenders.

Soul Bites also aims to make these dishes as healthy as possible, namely by using quality ingredients such as Mary’s air-chilled organic chicken. The kitchen also practices pressure frying, which results in less fat than traditional fried chicken, and does not use lard.

Organ Virtuoso Cameron Carpenter to Debut the Rodgers Infinity 3-Manual Organ

IPE ORGANS ARE EXPENSIVE… really, really expensive, as in millions of dollars expensive. So when a venue like The Granada Theatre lacks a resident pipe organ, what’s an artist to do? Rent a digital one, of course. But, when the artist playing that instrument is international organ superstar Cameron Carpenter, not just any organ will do.

According to Nelson Dodge, the organ provider and leading distributor of the Rodgers organ brand, what makes this particular organ so special is all of its firsts. It’s the first of this make and model to come off the assembly line. It’s the first time this organ will ever be heard. It’s the first time Carpenter and The Symphony will globally debut this organ (even before it’s publicly introduced). And, it’s the first time this unrivaled software is being put through its paces on a non-custom organ.

“This is the most excited I’ve been about an organ in my professional career,” Dodge enthusiastically noted.

The Rodgers Infinity brings an expanded data set combined with enormous processing power and polyphony (hundreds of notes played simultaneously) to recreate the most authentic and massive pipe organ sound achievable by an electronic organ.

So how does it work and what can the audience at Sonic Boom expect?

The organ console is the command center. Here is where Carpenter sits and plays, while functioning much like a maestro himself. He manipulates the controls that signal to the

Carpenter requires a large organ with enough resources to produce the equivalent sound of a large (expensive) pipe organ to do justice to his talent and the repertoire he’s playing. And that’s just what the Santa Barbara audience will experience when they hear Carpenter debut the Rodgers Infinity 3-Manual Organ at Sonic Boom with The Santa Barbara Symphony on March 19th and 20th.

computer to turn notes on and off, using sampling data from actual pipe recordings, and translates those sounds into an audio stream that travels through amplifiers and broadcasts through a tower of 28 speakers, which will be located at the back of the Granada stage. This sound system has been custom designed to resonate up and over the heads of the orchestra musicians and out into the auditorium.

Thousand Steps Repair Project Begins March 28th

“Thousand Steps is one of three public beach access stairways we have in Santa Barbara,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jill Zachary. “This major repair project will make sure the people of Santa Barbara have safe access to the beach from the street level for decades to come.”

The beach stairway will be closed to public access throughout the duration of the repair project. Since ocean waves regularly crash against the lower steps, these stairs have eroded and it has made them precarious to use. Additionally, waves in the wintertime wash away sand and create a significant drop-off between the stairs’ ending and the beach.

To combat these issues, the repair project will include the demolition and rebuilding of the lower 14 steps, and replacing the bottom portion of the stairways and adding ten new steps. This will secure visitors’ safety year-round, despite seasonal sand level changes. New handrails, a new concrete guard rail, and an improved drainage system to prevent the accumulation of slippery algae will also be added.

ALMOST 100 YEARS AFTER ITS CONSTRUCTION, the Thousand Steps will be closed to undergo six to eight weeks of repairs beginning Monday, March 28th.

Originally named Camino a Mar, the stairway was constructed at the end of Santa Cruz Boulevard by the City of Santa Barbara in 1925, connecting West Mesa neighborhood pedestrians to the beach below. The repair project will be led by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Virginia Claborn Joins Habitat SB VIRGINIA CLABORN, has joined Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County as a Special Projects Manager. Claborn holds experience with Habitat for Humanity on all levels, first getting involved as a volunteer more than 20 years ago. She then joined Habitat for Humanity International’s national staff, serving as an organizational development consultant. In her new role, she will focus on strategic initiatives to engage donors and volunteers within the community. Claborn holds her bachelor’s degree in business and applied management.

In honoring Saenger with this award, FACCC recognized her vital work as an advocate for faculty at the state level, especially advocating for part-time faculty. “I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Saenger. “Although teaching is my first priority, the fight for equity and justice is a close second. Community Invited to Give Feedback on Proposed Civilian Oversight System for SBPD

OMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN NOW GIVE FEEDBACK ON THE PROPOSED DRAFT FRAMEWORK FOR A CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT SYSTEM of the Santa Barbara Police Department via an online survey.

This draft is the result of close to a year of work by the City’s Community Formation Commission, who has reviewed other cities’ oversight systems and the needs of our community.

“Community outreach is the key to community buy-in. Processes like this do not work without your input,” said Gabe Escobedo, Chair of the CFC. “The Community Formation Commission has worked diligently and thoughtfully to develop a civilian oversight model for the City of Santa Barbara. Over the next few weeks, we look forward to hearing from you and using that feedback to finalize our recommendation for City Council.”

Developed in collaboration with the Center for Court Innovation and CFC, the survey will collect completely anonymous responses from the community. All questions are optional, with gathered information being analyzed and reported on by the CFC and CCI in a public memo. The CFC will then use the information to shape the draft recommendation before presenting to the City Council next month.

The survey will remain open until 11:59pm on Tuesday, March 22nd. Paper surveys can also be provided by the CFC on request.

SBPD Issues Body-Worn Cameras to Officers for Enforcement and Investigative Contacts ALL FIELD OPERATION PATROL OFFICERS AND A MAJORITY OF OTHER SWORN PERSONNEL WITH THE SANTA BARBARA POLICE DEPARTMENT have been issued and are wearing body-worn cameras in the field. The outfitting of patrol officers with cameras began in December 2021, with testing beginning in July 2021. The cameras are attached to the exterior of an officer’s uniform in a conspicuous place.

“Although not a panacea for all problems police face, body worn cameras have been shown to provide positive outcomes to both officers and community members,” states SBPD’s announcement.

“Research suggests officers are able to capture valuable evidence, and generally both officers and community members are in favor of body worn cameras. In some circumstances, body worn cameras have been shown to reduce complaints against police officers, reduce police use of force, and increase perceptions of procedural justice.”

Mental Wellness Center and SeaVees Partner to Support Local Youth Mental Health Education

E

NCOURAGING PEOPLE TO BE STYLISH WHILE SUPPORTING A WORTHY CAUSE, Mental Wellness Center is partnering with the Santa Barbarabased shoe company SeaVees to launch a shoe that supports mental health education for area youth. Called the “The Mental Health Awareness Baja Slip On,” ten percent of purchases of the limited-edition slip-on sneaker will be donated to the Mental Wellness Center.

“We are grateful to SeaVees for their support of youth mental wellness in our community,” said Annmarie Cameron, CEO of Mental Wellness Center in Santa Barbara. “Their fun and stylish shoes are a fresh and innovative way to spread the message that youth mental health and education is critical—not just in our area but across the country and world.”

Designed in collaboration with Carissa Potter Carlson of People I’ve Loved, the shoes feature Carlson’s affirmation artwork, a secret message screen-printed in the inside footbed, and a vibrant green that is the color of the international symbol for mental health awareness.

The collaboration will support the Mental Wellness Center’s Wellness Connection Council and Mental Health Matters program, which introduces facts about mental health to elementary, middle, and high school students across regional public and private schools.

DAM PHILLIPS AND HIS INTREPID FOLK ORCHESTRA OF SANTA BARBARA has been known to put on a fine, well-researched and themedriven – not to mention entertaining – concert. That they did last weekend, at both El Presidio Chapel and the Marjorie Luke Theatre, with an extra-special bonus in the presence of famed guests Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas.

Fraser and Haas’ fiddle/cello duo has been a renowned entity on the global Scottish/Celtic music scene, and Phillips explained to the audience that this collaboration came about via a casual invitation he sent on Instagram. Otherwise, the entire affair was intoxicatingly acoustic, non-digital, and a celebration of Celtic music from the ages to the modern moment.

Opera Santa Barbara continues its intriguing season with the contemporary transgender-themed chamber opera As One (Friday, March 25th and Sunday, March 27th). And the veteran chamber music outfit, Camerata Pacifica's next installment lands at Hahn Hall, on Friday, March 25th. As usual, the CamPac program veers away from the expected, featuring great American composer John Harbison, Destenay, Reinecke, and, for standard fare’s sake, Saint-Saëns.

A ripe precursor to St. Patrick’s Day, the concert (I caught Sunday afternoon’s Luke show) raised the bar on Phillips’ innately ambitious project. The starring duo appeared, with obvious glee, in front of an orchestral cast of 28 musicians skillfully navigating Phillips’ arrangements.

Manning his usual bevvy of instruments, from the conventional guitar and vocals Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas to pastoral bagpipes, shruti box (and Indian drone source) and Galician gaita, Phillips was an engaging epicenter for a program opening with St. Patrick’s An Dro and climaxing with The Sailor’s Wife/The Lads of Duns.

When not playing with the FOSB forces, the duo dazzled with its depth, interactive power, and flair. Fraser explained that, odd as it may seem, the fiddle-cello combo is not one which “lost half of a string quartet” but a “format of choice in Scotland going way back.” Highlights of their spotlight moments included Fraser’s slow-fast The Dreamer/The Jester and Haas metrically tricky but stunning Alien of Alesund, dedicated to the Norwegian hardanger fiddle master Annbjørg Lien.

Josef Woodard is a veteran cultural critic, who wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 25 years, has contributed to Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, DownBeat, and many music magazines, and a long association with the Santa Barbara Independent and News-Press. To date, he has published two books for Silman-James Press, on jazz legends Charles Lloyd and Charlie Haden, respectively. He recently published a debut novel, Ladies Who Lunch. Woodard is also a musician, a guitarist, songwriter, and head of the Household Ink Records label.

Measure to Increase Public Schools’ Arts & Music Education On Track to Qualify for November Ballot CLOSE TO 700,000 SIGNATURES HAVE BEEN COLLECTED by Californians for Arts and Music Education in Public Schools in their effort to ensure the Arts and Music in schools measure qualifies for the November 2022 California ballot. The measure aims to provide almost an additional $900 million in annual funding, without increasing taxes, toward arts and music education in PreK-12 public schools statewide.

Just over 623,000 signatures from registered voters still need to be collected before June 30th, with an end goal of one million signatures. Multiple leading labor organizations have voiced support of the measure, including the Actors’ Equity Association, the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles, the California IATSE Council, and the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

Since 2005, City Net has connected people experiencing homelessness to transformative care and housing solutions, working to break the cycle of homelessness.

“The City Net team are an amazing, caring group of people who are mission driven to help the most vulnerable homeless in our community obtain and retain their homes,” said Rob Fredericks, HACSB Executive Director and CEO. “They have done tireless work in partnership with us over the last year with positive results in getting people housed and providing necessary services.”

City Net partners with the HACSB Connect Home project, which was made possible through a $2 million grant from the California Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP). Beyond HACSB, City Net has brought together additional partners to the Connect Home program such as People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) and Cottage Health.

Currently, City Net provides street-outreach, case management, housing navigation, bridge-housing, shelter operation, reunifications, census coordination, and more. It also mobilizes community resources, and coordinating care in emergency shelters, parks, and other public areas. Through these services, City Net works to fill missing gaps in the local continuum of care.

SBCC Computer Science Team Wins 1st Place at Southern CA Programming Competition

INNING THE TOP HONOR FOR TWO-YEAR COLLEGES FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, Santa Barbara City College took first place at the Southern California International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). Held February 25th and 26th in Riverside, California, the competition brought together 48 teams from 15 Southern California institutions to solve ten programming problems in five hours.

The SBCC Yellow team won first place, with participating students including Jaden Baptista, Chen-Wei Chou, and Daniel Schaffield. SBCC’s Blue team, including Ricardo Arana, Sarah Duncan, and Aleksandar Nisavic, and Red team, including Paulo Aguirre, Jordan Ayvazian, and Vanessa Santillan, also competed.

These ads lead consumers to ask their doctors for prescriptions of often expensive new drugs despite the presence of existing options that are just as effective or affordable.

The Placebo Effect demonstrates how positive thinking can improve treatment outcomes. The Nocebo Effect suggests that negative thinking may have the opposite effect. About 20 percent of patients taking a sugar pill in controlled

AZZLING THE ARLINGTON THEATRE WITH HUMOR AND ENERGETIC INSIGHT, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem closed out the 2022 Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s tributes by receiving the festival’s highest honor — the Maltin Modern Master Award. Moderated by the award’s namesake, film critic Leonard Maltin, the evening chronicled the actors’ rich and varied careers up to their Oscar-nominated performances as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in director Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos.

She expressed that while the process of embodying Ball was her most difficult job to date, the role continued her efforts to play strong women.

HE LAST DAY OF THE 2022 SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ON SATURDAY MARCH 12TH WAS ACTION-PACKED IN VENUES ALL OVER TOWN! The last panel of the festival was the 11am Women’s Panel onstage at the Arlington Theatre. The event was introduced by SBIFF Program Director Claudia Puig, who thanked the festival’s sponsors and its 400 volunteers. After a short screening of the five Academy Award-nominated panelists’ works, each nominee was introduced. The last introduction was moderator Madelyn Hammond, owner of an entertainment marketing agency, who entered with a smile, lots of humor, and a serious dose of quick wit!

Hammond began the conversation by regaling the audience with the the panelists’ previous accomplishments, representing a broad spectrum of filmography. The 2022 Writer’s Panel featured Diane Warren (composer, Somehow You Do from Four Good Days), Jessica Kingdon (director, Ascension), Lynn Harris (producer, King Richard), Amber Richards (set decorator, Power of the Dog) and Elizabeth Mirzaei (director, Three Songs for Benazir).

Elizabeth Mirzaei, the nominated director in the documentary short subject category, Three Songs for Benazir, came with an interesting story. Mirzaei, and her husband and co-director Gulistan, an Afghan, had lived in the country when they met Shaista, the subject of their documentary film. Newly married at the time to Benazir, the documentary is essentially a love story despite personal struggles and shattered dreams after decades of wars and occupations. Shaista finally is forced to work in the poppy fields. Mirzaei, of Ukrainian descent, explained, “We feel this movie is important right now in a time when the world is confronting multiple wars... we hope this film helps.”

37th Film Festival Wrap Up

“We were so thrilled to have had our slate of 200 Director-actress Dina Amer films from 54 countries over the past week so wellreceived by festivalgoers. A few films even elicited standing ovations… We are very proud that filmmakers came from as far as Nepal, Iran, and Uganda – and many countries in between – to attend with their films. We thank all the wonderful filmmakers and our enthusiastic Santa Barbara audiences for making this such a joyful return to theaters, and a celebration of cinema,” Puig noted.

For Best Doc Short Jordan Matthew Horowitz’s Lalito 10 won the honor for the story on how a teacher adjusted successfully to the benefit of Guatemalan students. The Bruce Corwin Award for Best Live-Action Short Film was awarded to Canadian filmmaker Still from You Resemble Me Marilyn Cooke for drama dancing around morbid and spiritual atmosphere in her latest short No Ghost in the Morgue (Pas de Fantôme à la Morgue). She was there with her lead actress to accept the honor. Also from Canada, the Best Animated Short was awarded to Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman’s Apprentice a win for veteran Inuit filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk. The indigenous drama illustrated so well the frozen climate and addressed climate change in the story.

The Best Documentary Award went to Jon-Sesrie Goff 's layered racial history exploration, set in coastal South Carolina, After Sherman. The Jeffrey C. Barbakow Award for International Feature Film went to Shawkat Amin Korki's The Exam (Ezmûn) an intriguing story about the faultlines within Iranian society.

And very deserved, the Best Middle Eastern/Israeli Film Award went to director-actress Dina Amer's You Resemble Me (Tu Me Ressembles). Ms. Amer was there in person to thank the festival and jury. The film, which is in French and set in Paris, is a haunting story and a deconstruction of a real-life woman associated with terrorism.

Other International feature awards included Best Nordic/Dutch Film Award to Marianne Blicher's Miss Viiborg who was delighted to receive the honor. The entertaining

Our Worlds Collide, centering on the lives of five young spoken word poets, earned the ADL Stand Up Award

The Social Justice Award for Documentary Film was directed to Emma Macey-Storch for her insightful documentary Geeta, set within the India community of Agra and featuring a surprising main character.

The ADL Stand Up Award, sponsored by ADL Santa Barbara/Tri-Counties, the Skinner Social Impact Fund, and Steve & Cindy Lyons went to the filmmakers Jordan W. Barrow and Matt Edwards for their focus on a kind of teenage movement involving spoken-word poets in Los Angeles in the rewarding Our Words Collide.

The Audience Choice Award was announced by writer Joseph Woodard. Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy were there to accept for their amusing tale Róise and Frank (Mo ghrá buan).

The esteemed jury included Carlos Aguilar, Justine Bateman, Dupe Bosu, Julie Carmen, Annlee Ellingson, Tim Grierson, Beandrea July, Elizabeth Lo, Scott Mantz, Jose Novoa, Gil Robertson, Charles Solomon, Angie Wang, Steve Zahn, and Anthony and Annette Zerbe.

FTER ELEVEN DAYS of film festival screenings, tributes, educational showcases, and panels, one of Santa Barbara International Film Festival's wrap-up events was the Awards breakfast hosted by Maune Contemporary Gallery on State Street near the Arlington Theatre. Filled with supporters and festival organizers, including Roger Durling, Executive Director, and Claudia Puig, the Programming Director, the festival announced the lucky and talented award recipients. Well wishes for award winners were shared at a podium at the back of the gallery, and the scene had a kind of wistful sense of relief that the festival had actually been launched successfully, one of the few festivals that dared to go live and in person, as most festivals were left reeling by the ongoing pandemic era.

Los Padres Bans Campfires in Front Country Areas New rules banning fires in the Los Padres National Forest front country are in effect to prevent roadside camp fires from becoming a major disaster. The rule is in place now through February 24th, 2024.

The Hollister Fire, which began on Saturday, March 12th, has led to the closure of Gaviota State Beach Road day-use area and trails. As of Tuesday, March 15th, Cal Fire was reporting that the fire was 90 percent contained. The Santa Barbara Co. emergency response website is www.ReadySBC.org

Rite Aid on State Closes

Cruise Ship Returns to Santa Barbara Harbor

Rite Aid abruptly closes in downtown Santa Barbara at 825 State St. Historians will tell you there’s been a drug store there for at least 50 years. It was formerly Thrifty’s. In 1923 in was Diehl Grocery store.

“We’re taking this step to reduce the risk of an escaped campfire sparking a catastrophic wildfire in the urban interface,” said Santa Barbara District Ranger Daryl Hodges in a press release.

“The front country frequently experiences hot, dry, and gusty conditions that are simply incompatible with campfires.”

For the first time in two years, due to the pandemic, a cruise ship has arrived in Santa Barbara. The Majestic Princess is the first of 17 visits between now and May 20th.

More are to come in the fall, offering an economic boost to the city. Strict health protocols are in place.

Theatre Company, with some of the most talented young actors on the South Coast, presented Matilda the Musical last weekend, March 10th to 12th, at the Marjorie Luke Theatre. Wartime Will JOLT Job Formation The last time we had truly full employment in America was during World War II. It’s a horrible thought, I know, but we ought to look at the ramifications of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The world was at war then and all hands were needed in our factories to win the fight.

(Remember Rosie the Riveter?) We may need to do so again if the Ukraine war spreads beyond its borders.

It could mean the huge demand for workers will continue, and push wages even higher.

The recent JOLTS report showed that businesses continued their massive hiring effort in January and may continue to do so for the rest of this year. The Labor Department is reporting that after falling to as low as 4.6

million early in the pandemic, the number of open jobs soared above ten million last summer for the first time ever. They have remained extremely high since then.

And though the economy has added an average of 614,000 new jobs in each of the past five months, businesses still say it’s hard to attract new employees and retain old ones.

“The number of job openings was little changed at 11.3 million on the last business day of January, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported. Hires and total separations were little changed at 6.5 million and 6.1 million, respectively.”

This gives us an idea of the immensity of the U.S. economy, as well as its future direction.

The job openings line on Calculated Risk’s graph shows how high the demand for jobs has risen. And, more are quitting their jobs to find better jobs. Some 4.3 million quit their jobs in the month. Quits peaked at 4.5 million in November. Before the pandemic, the number of people quitting jobs averaged fewer than three million a month.

There were 6.3 million Hires and 6.1 million Layoffs, so we should look for more job growth this year, in spite of the touted labor shortages.

But why are so many being hired if that is the case? More are re-entering the work force than was expected.

Art review: 1 Yr in SB, through March 30, Thomas Reynolds Gallery

HEN THOMAS REYNOLDS moved his wellestablished gallery from the perch in San Francisco’s tony Pacific Heights area, the gallery’s home for 25 years, it seemed an auspicious idea to set up shop and a new home in Santa Barbara. The Thomas Reynolds Gallery, situated in a spot just a few doors up from the Arlington Theater on State, enjoys a central location in close proximity to the city’s expanding “Arts District,” two blocks from the Museum of Art. A year ago, the arrival of vaccinations was breeding widespread hope for a return to normal human behavior and old cultural habits. Alas, along came Delta and Omicron, delaying the comfort zone with visiting indoor galleries and businesses.

One year later, the COVID cobwebs are finally being dusted away and art-seekers are getting out Tunnel View, acrylic on canvas, 18 x 36 inches, by Mark Matsuno more. For anyone who has put off checking out the space (present company included, he says sheepishly), back to the immortal views of leisure and epicure captured by it’s time to visit Reynolds’ current exhibition, 1 Yr in SB. Sandy Ostrau, a UCSB graduate, delves deeper into abstract sensibilities than others in the shows and enjoys laying on thick, palpable textures of paint. Figures appear in stages of prop-like ambiguity, as with Standing Together, but with an intimacy beyond their pictorial function. A lone, tilting semblance of a figure leans into a run in Morning Run, a centering device in the composition, divided by rectilinear color zones. Fields to Sea draws doubly on California connections, given its similarity to Northern-turned-Southern Californian Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series, a touchstone of the idea of natural abstraction.

Art historical parallels take a different turn in Ken Auster’s infectious but also voyeuristic, fly-on-the-wall paintings of restaurant life. He’s Coming with Your Soup invokes its story with the title, while the intriguing Merry Soul plots figures in a murky shaded foreground, with a glistening bar and mural in the background. With Vincent Van Gogh & His Friends in Santa Barbara

THINK YOU WOULD AGREE WITH ME that a museum exhibition with Van Gogh’s name attached to it would be on a must-see list for anyone interested in art. So, when I received the announcement from Santa Barbara Museum of Art about the opening of the exhibition, Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources, I immediately got intrigued.

Art Matters

Of course, I expected Vincent Van Gogh to see some of his famous Self Portrait with a Pipe, 1886 paintings on display. And yet, among the twenty Van Gogh pieces in the exhibition only few are his best while others are hmmm...just good. It is for each of us to decide when he is at the top and when he is not.

Seventy-five other works of art in the exhibition are by artists that Van Gogh admired and was deeply influenced by. Among them are Camille Corot, Courbet, Edgar Degas, Delacroix, Gauguin, Manet, and Rembrandt.

Spending two hours going through the exhibition, I had the impression that Van Gogh was introducing me to his friends, some of them famous and some unknown that I had never heard of before like Jean-Francois Raffaëlli and Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli.

It is amazing to see how much all these artists influenced Van Gogh’s style, subjects, brush strokes, and color pallet. These artists had decades dedicated to their art while Van Gogh had only ten years to make his art before he died at the age of 37.

It’s known that during the last years of his life many of Van Gogh’s paintings were rendered in just one day. Stand close and look at each of them for a minute or two. Their energy, the stories they tell, the individual drama of each brushstroke are all shaped by the mind and hands of the artist who was slowly losing his mind, but definitely not losing his art.

A very untraditional selection of artworks for this challenging and deeply satisfying exhibition were made

by Eik Kahng, Chief Curator of Santa Barbara Museum of Art, who gave me a tour talking as a friend, and not as a scholar. My deep thanks to her. And, let me finish by congratulating the Santa Barbara Museum of Art for organizing such an important exhibition that any major museum would die for.

VER INSPIRED BY HIS ARTISTIC PEERS, VINCENT VAN GOGH greatly appreciated French realist painter Jean-François Raffaëlli. According to historian Sjraar van Heugten’s essay Admiration and Guidance: Van Gogh’s Personal Pantheon of Artists, included in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s exhibition catalogue, Van Gogh was introduced to Raffaëlli through a catalogue given to him by his brother, Theo. Upon reviewing Raffaëlli’s works and reading one of his essays, Van Gogh was enchanted by the artist’s efforts to depict the poorer, working classes.

“I think the drawings in it are masterly,” wrote Van Gogh to Theo about Raffaëlli’s catalogue in 1885.

Many of Raffaëlli’s works focus on ragpickers and other outcasts of 19th-century French society, depicting them in a realistic way that gives them a sense of artistic merit. Similarly, many of Van Gogh’s earlier works also focus on the working classes, yet are clearly informed by his personal background of living and working within more rural communities as a lay minister. In honor of Raffaëlli’s influence on Van Gogh, several of Raffaëlli’s works, including The Absinthe Drinkers, are displayed within SBMA’s exhibition.
