ot! This is the most pronounced word this Summer. The temperatures are higher than usual, and this doesn’t help us to enjoy the warm months with summer carefree. We are less productive and struggle to create something new; that's why I'm delighted to share with you our Summer color palette on page 15. From light pastel tones to bright hues - a jaw-dropping contrast while inspiring your creativity and expressiveness. Further satisfying your curiosity in this issue is our section of the Best Pools in the world (page 43). A rich collection of the hotels that offers a look at the different interesting pools, for all tastes and needs. Also, in this number we ensure to provide you with the best interior designs: from the colorful penthouse in Sydney (page 92) to the stylish Parisian apartment (page 102) to the refurbishment of the traditional '' Dijkhuis '' in Amsterdam (page 138). Inspiration and ideas for the home are found in the pages before you. So, grab a refreshing drink, make yourself comfortable (perhaps in one of the wonderful pools we have proposed) and enjoy our edition!

I’m always interested in your opinion, send me any feedback or suggestions at zhanna@gandgmagazine.eu

Soft silhouettes Antolini presents an original and unexpected project, born from the surprising creaJve agreement with the interior designer Alessandro La Spada: the first capsule Tableware CollecJon made of Irish Green marble belonging to the Antolini Exclusive CollecJon. From the combinaJon of two ancestral materials - stone and metal - an elegant narraJon opens in which the oval table and the suspension lamp in Traslux Crystal in a mac finish become the scenario in which table accessories, like small architectures , reveal the story of this unexpected collecJon, capturing the viewer's gaze in an almost dreamlike vision. VIEW

In the eastern suburb of Sydney of Darlinghurst, YSG Studio projected a penthouse with a colourful furnishing selections and a Rushcutters Bay view. Photography by Prue Ruscoe

94 | G&G _ Magazine

T

he design team of YSG Studio has gutted the entire penthouse, from flooring to overhead lighting, transforming it into an immersive haven for the owners. Oversized soft landings, deep piled custom rugs and stone surfaces with planetary swirls levitate within. Counterbalancing the sobriety of the box-like architectural frame shrouded in glass, they demarcate zones within the expansive living area. The design team has decided to drop the ceiling to accommodate services in one corner of the rectangular living area, staining its timber surface black for cossetting appeal. Extending towards the lift lobby, a mechanical sliding main entrance connects the two zones, creating an intimate vestibule-like lounge/library. Musk, lilac and plum are the trifecta hues within the open living area with citrus accents introduced via golden bands encircling the illuminated Murano glass totems and an amber porthole piercing the sliding entrance door.

The overall scheme is literally conveyed like a colour wheel key to the home via the dining table co-designed with Adam Goodrum. Its graphic wreath-like exposed mortise detailing (which flows down the legs) depicts the dominant shades of the home. As consummate entertainers, the clients requested ”conversational custom pieces”. A ganache-rich ‘wall’ of joinery forms the backdrop to the kitchen’s kinetic drama.

96 | G&G _ Magazine

The watermarked taffeta-like veneer responds to the harbor's rippled surface, heightening the solid, swirling mass of the utilities bench before it. The designers clad it in mis-matched oversized Lapis blue granite tiles (plus the surface of the quirky mobile drinks trolley with its integrated lamp). Cut from slabs to resolve lift height restrictions preventing the transport of solid pieces, they set the theme for graphic walls animated by glossy Moroccan tiles.

Adding sculptural appeal, an offset floating plinth with a curved return sits upon drum legs beside the kitchen counter. A plumtoned fulcrum supporting a 360-degree rotating granite ‘platter’ (an entertaining device for canapés or cheese) connects the two structures. Mounted in lithe steel frames, glass shelving was attached to the joinery wall to avoid a heavy, blunt kitchen return. Integrated downlights pool a warm glow upon domestic vignettes with museum-like finesse, matching the book display unit in the vestibule. The deep L-shaped balcony resonates with graphic shades of blue tethering the eye to both the kitchen and the harbor's depth beyond.

“The mood is revelatory and futuristic, with an upbeat dose of Pedro Almodóvar’s cinematic eccentricity. Contemporary Spanish tapas bars and their liberal use of tiling, surrealism, and rich colour gradations evoking a material take on the northern lights were our inspiration.”

98 | G&G _ Magazine

Initiating more storage was tricky with so many glass walls, so all the custom beds feature cavities beneath them to maintain the streamlined appeal of the walls. Within the master bedroom, the upholstered bedhead with integrated side tables features stained zebra veneers crowned with Calacatta Viola marble. A solar system of blown glass lighting in berry

shades orbits above. Always in the same tones, the bed lines together with the white cream rug complete the décor. This room has also been extended upon the balcony to accommodate a study nook and generous walk-in-wardrobe and created a verdant entertaining oasis outdoors that blocks prying eyes from neighbouring towers.

“Light, crisp layers of marble articulate the vanities in the bathrooms, wrapping around shower walls with a futuristic 2001 Space Odyssey meets Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion vibe.”

100 | G&G _ Magazine

The penthouse’s material advantage comes via the use of luxe elements including marble. Applied in light, crisp layers within the bathrooms and powder room and atop coffee plus bedside tables, its gestural patterns impart a sense of playfulness. So streamlined is the vanity ledge in the master en-suite with its integrated shallow sinks that its swirling veins grant the illusion of levitation. A splash back wraps around the shower recesses providing a practical ledge for accessories, ending mid gait to avoid enclosing the expansive nature of the white-tiles. Flipping the materials, the guest bathroom reveals a similar layout, only Moroccan tiles replace the onyx splash back stretching across the shower wall.

historical details Amici Buro designed an apartment in the old Parisian foundation preserving its history.

102 | G&G _ Magazine

"We dreamed of working on an apartment in the old foundation. It so happened that the old foundation turned out to be French, which largely dictated the basis of the design and its stylistics."

T

he cornice of the apartment in a classic style, the wooden parquet and the doors have remained intact. All this is immediately noticeable as soon as you enter the heart of the apartment: a large day area consisting of living room, dining zone and kitchen - everything is connected. Upon entering the room, the dining

104 | G&G _ Magazine

composition is the first thing that catches the eye, as is a laconic poster on the wall by the Ukrainian interior designer and artist Olga Fradina. The chairs by Zara Home and Driade have become the companions of kooku design table. The ergonomic kitchen from Armony Cucine in gray porcelain stoneware and wood fits into the main range of the studio.

The living room represents the main recreation area of the house; it occupies the second part of the room. Semicircle and circle are the figures dictated by the positioning of the recreation area can be traced on all furniture. This technique helped to tear the upholstered furniture from the walls and made room for free movement between the spaces. For example, the sofa by Paolo Castelli with its soft curves and light shades together with the round carpet are evident in the whole design. As well as the small round steel table that matches the floor lamp with its curved leg, also in steel. Olga Fradkina's posters are featured here as well and are accompanied by bright accents on the walls. Another element to note is the fireplace of course. Although it is small, there is a gray colored frame that infuses it and makes it very captivating. 106 | G&G _ Magazine

The living room leads to the study which includes a workplace and a recreation area. The table and the lamp by & Tradition created a workplace and a comfortable upholstered chair by Artifort completed them. Bright blue textured wall panel was chosen to match the Ligne Roset sofa of the same color. While the unusually shaped Ultrafragola pink mirror brought even more playfulness to the office. 108 | G&G _ Magazine

The child's room has a two-story solid wood structure that includes a sleeping place, a sofa and a recreation and play area on the second floor. Circles in the shape of Vibia handles, ceiling lights and appliques support the main figure of the project. To preserve the mobility of the lighting that is important for the study and at the same time not clutter up the functional desk, the designers inscribed an Artemide guide lamp above the desk, on the ceiling. 110 | G&G _ Magazine

The parents’ bedroom are in warm brown tones. The designers deliberately did not include bright color accents to make the room as recreational as possible. Letti Jack bed by Bolzan on high legs visually facilitated the bedroom space. An accent pendant lamp from Cattelan was added. The wardrobe is open with built-in warm light illumination.

As the laundry room is a room that leads to the main bathroom, the washer, dryer and all household chemicals are hidden behind the wooden facades of the ergonomic cabinets. The floor and wall finishes of these two rooms are made of the same materials. The texture of 41zero42’s marble tiles

traditionally complements the classic style. Thanks to natural light and a large mirror, the bathroom is very bright and spacious. The pedestal facade under the sinks is made of the same veneer as the kitchen. This technique created a commonality of all the main rooms in the apartment. 112 | G&G _ Magazine

INNOCENCE

The founder of Purple Backyard, Kumpal Vaid and her team designed the residence in Pune in a chic transitional style with roots in the concept of Hiwaga (a Philippine word that means to evoke a sense of wonder). Photography by Ishita Sitwala

116 | G&G _ Magazine

N

estled amidst lush landscapes in a quaint corner of Pune, the house is a duplex that brings together the grandiose of villas and utility of apartments into a single construct. The home embraces the client’s exuberance of finally building a dream family home and has been designed to spark joy within all those who inhabit the space. The brick cladding, white metal profile windows, lush indoor greens, chic brass and antique gold accents, a soothing colour palette and textured walls tie the 6000 square feet house together, every room in the house has been designed to evoke an undeniable sense of Hiwaga. The main door celebrates the natural texture and tones of wood with subtle textural details that balance the simplicity with a level of complexity. With a brick wood and the wood accent light with black metal colour palette and subtle transitional undertones, the entryway lends to the peaceful atmosphere of the house. Entrance leads to the common areas with zones being demarcated through a subtle transition in materials or the use of anchoring elements that give each room a unique vibe. The formal living room creates the feeling of wonder through the rich balance of design styles and elements brought together by classic lines juxtaposed with hues and furnishings that are more modern in spirit with multiple visually linked seating options.

"My personal style is rooted in Indian heritage but I also incorporate tranquil qualities of zen culture. So when it comes to this house in particular, it’s about building the narrative of Zen like feel that connects every space."

118 | G&G _ Magazine

In the dining space, a solid wood table alludes a connection with the outdoors. Beyond the dining there is an outdoor seating with a mandir in the backdrop, adding to the tranquility of the space. Connecting with the dining is the open plan kitchen with ivory cabinetry. While the powder bathroom is an amalgamation of the transitional chic kitchen and the farmhouse/rustic dining room. The use of playful patterns lends to the feeling of wonder.

"Objects in the space appear to be simple overall but they include subtle details, such as textures, that balance simplicity with complexity and give a timeless quality to the space. This balance of simplicity and complexity ensures that one does not tire of the space but constantly finds new meanings and enriched beauty that causes its aesthetic value to grow and adapt with the family’s changing needs over the years.”

A curved and arched fluted entry passage, leading to the master bedroom, draws an individual into an unexpected yet carefully coordinated space while creating the feeling of wonder and an element of surprise. Simple silhouettes counterbalanced by nuanced, abstract, and rounded elements keep the eye moving around the room. Here, the designers

120 | G&G _ Magazine

opted for the vitrified flooring. The louvered sliding wood door leads to the semi-open deck inspired by Japanese homes. The kids’ bedroom is gender neutral with playful elements. Pops of colour from their various toys and playthings and hexagonal white & yellow tile flooring create a unique vibe for the space.

"My style is rooted in designing decluttered spaces with a zen quality to them. We focus on how transitional a space can be but also try to borrow from many styles and bring it cohesively together in a zen space.”

The staircase leads to the second floor that opens to the lounge area with a zen touch with minimal natural tones. This area forms the highlight: an open, unrestricted habitat in which the rooms dissolve easily into each other, doorways are designed as visual portals between common spaces and create a feeling of Hiwaga as one moves between spaces. The outdoor seating lounge has white patterned floor from rawsteen while the brick wall with concrete seating enveloped in greens. The roman bamboo blinds bathe the space in soft natural light, exposed wood rafters, raw edge & live wood log center table. 122 | G&G _ Magazine

124 | G&G _ Magazine

The second floor also includes the son’s bedroom. The designers opted for two types of walls: wallpaper with a checkered print on one side and the monotony of beige on the other. On the walls we also find white panels at the bottom thus creating a sense of depth. The furniture present is simple: white, with square shapes. Through the door, on which the wallpaper and panels have been applied to make it less appealing, you enter the walkin closet with a simple design. Next, there is also an attached bathroom with a terrazzo counter and natural brick tiles on the walls.

"Colour has been used to produce a sense of wonder while giving individuality to each room. Understated, not innocent. Subdued colours, overlaid with tones of grey and white to allow for a space that exudes tranquillity while inducing a sense of awe.”

Breath Fresh Air

Shlomit Zeldman transformed a spacious house for a couple and their five children into a lively and inviting family space located in the Sharon Region (Israel). Photography by Shai Gil

T

he garden surrounds most of the property. The pathway to the house is visible upon entry through the minimalist opaque front gates. It is made of large concrete slabs with irregular spacing that allows vegetation to grow and leads to a large black entrance door as well as to the swimming pool. Upon entry to the property, a large dining area is revealed - a symbolic look that reflects the owners love of entertaining. An unusual large 4m long black brass table was positioned in the center of the dining area, which is located between the kitchen and the swimming pool, creating an inviting and pleasant dining experience. A spacious kitchen is located to the left of the dining area. It is abundant in storage space, kitchen appliances, and worktops yet still maintains a clean minimalist look. Fishbone parquet floors add to the richness of the space and its design. The kitchen is monochrome with touch-open cabinets, the appliances are hidden, and minimalist

lighting was fitted along a thin hanging profile to maintain a clean look. According to Zeldman, the owner loves to cook and entertain, thus the kitchen is a very active and dominant area in the home and much of the attention and investment were dedicated to its design. This is continued by an outdoor kitchen, and both are often used simultaneously.

"This couple hired my services to renovate a part of their property, with a focus on repositioning and replacing the existing pool.” Shlomit Zeldman

130 | G&G _ Magazine

“The owners are art lovers, and so a strategic corner in the lounge was dedicated to a red and white work of art created by the Israeli artist Orit Fuchs. The variety of other art pieces dotted around the house 'break' the clean white design and inject a fresh twist into the mix.”

132 | G&G _ Magazine

A concealed family and TV room is located near the kitchen, also fitted with fishbone parquet. Unlike the rest of the property, this room was designed in darker tones with a luxurious leather couch, stools, and an advanced audio system. The lounge continues the kitchen’s clean design lines. A variety of harmonious seating spaces, in neutral shades, were placed in the lounge and include chaiselounges, stools and other inviting cozy areas for each and everyone of the family

members. This space was designed purely for the purpose of entertaining and overlooks the garden through large windows that create a sense of space and seamless continuity between the indoors and the outdoors. A large area of the swimming pool, which isn't big and mostly used for entertaining, was dedicated to a splash pool with sunbeds. A lounging area and a dining area were designed on either side of the pool, each continuing their respective internal areas.

The stairs were covered in wood that matches the parquet and continues the design thread. A glass banister, supported by hidden attachments, emphasizes the “less is more” theme. A small bridge was designed on the top level, from which the ground level can be observed and serves as a partition between the children’s wing and the parents’ wing. The entrance to the master bedroom is through a corridor of cupboards. Those, as well as the door to the en-suite, are concealed by engraved carpentry. The same carpentry design was used for the bed headboard, which is combined with hanging reading lights, as well as the cupboard fitted across from the bed. This creates a harmonious look with ample storage space. The design concept in the couple’s large ensuite is different. The space is tiled with large, thin, dark gray tiles, and the space is fitted with a dominant freestanding bath, a large shower and a granite covered cupboard.

A large guest suite was designed in the basement with a cozy lounge and an exit to a courtyard, to be used by their three grown children when they come to visit. Here, the design theme of the property with parquet floors continues. There are also a seating area, a bed that overlooks a courtyard, a large TV and a pampering bathroom. The basement includes also a kitchenette and a well-equipped gym. According to Zeldman, with regards to the gym, the idea was to create a sporty vibe with advanced equipment.

A

s you might have guessed, Dijkhuis are built next to a dyke. As building a dyke raises the ground level, it means that houses around it have a back area (and garden) at the lower, original level. This causes a difference in height and light that poses design challenges and creative opportunities in equal measure - especially in such a traditional house where a balance must be struck between respecting heritage and introducing modern touches. To create an interior that fits the original architecture while freshening it up, the spatial qualities of each living area were assessed and the properties of height, light and each building structure and window shape were maximised. Fruits of this approach are perhaps most visible in the spacious kitchen and dining area at the back of the house. A low beam ceiling

draws you into an intimate space, where a large table makes it easy for the family to come together for a long meal or simply enjoy the view over the garden through wide French windows. In the kitchen itself a terrazzo kitchen top is matched with detailed wooden cabinets on a terracotta tiled wooden floor and a light custom porcelain cabinet made of glass, wooden profiles and white tiles.

Upstairs from the kitchen the entrance hallway is on the same level as the dyke. Across the hall is a toilet decorated with square off-white tiles: glossy on the wall, matt tiles on the floor. Further furnishings include wooden painted plinths, purple marble and an oak wooden toilet cabinet with brass details. Turning right, you enter the living room, the most lavish space in the house. Light streams in through tall arched windows that give the curved, high ceiling with art deco decorations a spacious and welcoming feel. Both the ceiling and the walls have been painted in three hues of white to enhance the room’s architectural elements. In a room with so much natural

light, darker colours could be used to dramatic effect, such as on the dark herringbone floor. But all eyes will here be drawn to a monolithic walnut cabinet

whose shape mirrors the windows opposite it. A large green sofa and a built-in cocktail bar with a terrazzo top make this a room where you can relax from dusk to dawn.

The first-floor hosts four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate toilet. To create enough space for these living arrangements, two dormer windows were installed that run along two thirds of the length of the roof. In contrast to downstairs, the floors here are lighter, with brighter colours on the walls to create a serene atmosphere. On the bedroom ceilings you’ll find details of the original beamed roof. Both bathrooms have a 144 | G&G _ Magazine

travertine back splash and are tiled with upright rectangular glossy tiles on the walls, and matt tiles in a herringbone pattern on the floor. Herringbone returns in the double plank parquet in the bedrooms, but in the corridors, this changes into straight planking to give the vertical dimensions of the house more character. This symbolizes the way Studio Modijefsky has paid tribute to the building’s heritage while filling it with contemporary style.
