From the Chairman of the Board As someone whose own days as a student at Casady do not feel so far away, I am humbled by the opportunity to present my first Chairman’s Report. In doing so, I am grateful for this honor bestowed upon me, mindful of the responsibilities attendant to this position but comforted by the leadership of Head of School Christopher C. Bright, his administrative team and the amazing faculty and staff, who day in and day out give their very best for our students.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank E. Carey Joullian IV ’78, for his tireless service to Casady as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the last five years. Carey’s leadership helped the School maneuver through some difficult times, evolve to address fundamental changes in secondary school education and reach an upward inflection point where a long and bright future lies ahead. We are all thankful for Carey’s generosity and guidance, and we will work hard to continue his efforts. In keeping with his commitment to the School, Carey has agreed to continue serving as Past Chairman, a source of knowledge that will certainly be tapped frequently.

In 1950, shortly before the completion of the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor, founding member of the Board of Trustees Judge A.D. Cochran commented to Headmaster Michael Martin that: “When we look back 10 or 20 years hence, this will all look like a very modest start....and in the years to come when the campus is dotted with splendid buildings and is teeming with young people, what a memorial it will be for our beloved Bishop Casady for whom it has been so fittingly named.”

At that time, the School’s founders had a dream for the Chapel to have an east and west transept and a bell tower.

While it has taken 60 years, the founders’ dream for St. Edward’s Chapel will soon be realized. Through the hard work of The Rt. Rev. Dr. Edward J. Konieczny, the vision and support of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and the generous gifts of a key donor, the physical and spiritual center of the School will be transformed from a mere splendid building to an architectural wonder. And shortly, the belfry of St. Edward’s bell tower will ring with its carillon bell system like no other bells in the state. Sixty years later, what a sight Casady would be for Judge Cochran and the other founding trustees.

St. Edward’s is not the only physical change recently occurring on campus. Through the gifts of several generous benefactors in the Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign, the new math facility will provide a state-of-the-art environment for our faculty and students. Garrett Zwahlen ’10 explained the importance of this facility in his speech at the groundbreaking in the fall of 2009, saying we face “many problems in the 21st century...some small, some global, some known, some unknown, and math plays a key role in teaching the minds of tomorrow to solve these problems.” He added “the student body of Casady School wants to thank all of those

who have contributed in any way to making this new building happen.” When completed, the Casady math building will be a benchmark for all academic facilities in the state.

These recent capital improvements should not overshadow the Casady Community’s continued support of the School through the Annual Fund. On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to report that despite the economically stressful times we face as a nation, Casady exceeded its $750,000 Annual Fund fundraising goal for the fifth consecutive year. Because tuition income only covers 80 percent of the true cost of an education at Casady, the Annual Fund supports the School’s operating needs by subsidizing tuition income. During the 2009-10 Annual Fund, Casady’s dedicated faculty and staff, parents, alumni, students and friends demonstrated their commitment to the School by contributing $775,613. It is especially important that the Board recognize our wonderful faculty and staff who set a record with 100 percent participation in this Annual Fund. It is our faculty and staff and their incredible dedication to Casady that make our School what it is today.

In addition to several new faces on campus there are two new members to the Casady Advancement Team I wanted to mention in the context of this report. On July 1, Laura Lang joined the School as Director of Institutional Advancement and leads the team responsible for annual fund, planned giving and all related development activities as well as alumni relations and marketing. Laura has 14 years of experience in the non-profit sector, most recently with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Joining Laura is Heidi Cohn as Director of Annual Giving. Heidi has been involved with countless community projects and brings a strong background in marketing to this important position. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I welcome Laura and Heidi and look forward to working with them.

In closing, I am pleased to report that the School is on sound footing and moving toward an even brighter future. As Casady continues to move toward this new horizon, we will be well served to remember the late former Headmaster Robert Woolsey’s charge, when he said “to whom much is given, much is expected in return.” So, whether it is a faculty member spending extra time to help a student understand a difficult concept, a parent volunteering on campus, an athlete on the field digging deeper for a victory or learning from a defeat, the board and administration making tough choices to ensure the School continues to thrive in the right direction, or a student helping a classmate as they both learn how to succeed, it is the strong partnership between the Casady community and the School and the shared commitment to understanding what is best for our students that makes Casady great.

From the Director of Institutional Advancement Though Casady School is most recognized for its long history of academic excellence, the rich tradition of giving has also been a thread woven deeply into the fabric of the School community.

From the very beginning in 1947, with the gift of land for its campus, philanthropy has shaped and transformed Casady and its students in countless ways.

As someone who’s new to the Casady community, I feel so fortunate to arrive at this School at a time when the foundation for giving is so strong and well built through decades of dedication by many groups. Parents, alumni, staff, volunteers and even students have all worked countless hours and have given selflessly to build and sustain Casady as the city’s premier educational institution.

Casady’s Board of Trustees has always provided active leadership in fundraising and sets an important example each year with every single member making a gift to the Annual Fund. Significantly, Casady’s faculty and staff also reached 100 percent participation in the Annual Fund for the first time in history last year.

The Annual Fund at Casady rivals most others in the area in terms of leadership, structure and dollars raised. Our School relies upon these funds to operate each year and to continue to provide the level of excellence that has become synonymous with Casady.

The Casady Parents’ Organization enthusiastically raises funds for a variety of important School projects and programs each year, and provides numerous opportunities for parents to get involved and volunteer to help our School.

The completion of the Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression is a testament to the dedication of volunteer leadership and the passion of many donors for the continued growth of the School and success of our students.

The Casady Community’s continued success in raising funds to support the School even during times of change and uncertainty puts us in the very fortunate position to be poised for even greater opportunities to advance our School in the coming year. With new Board leadership, a new Advancement team and the continuing vision and guidance of our Head of School, the possibilities seem endless for harnessing the passion and generosity of those who hold a deep belief in the mission of Casady School.

From the Alumni Association The 2010-11 school year will be a year of change for the Casady Alumni Association. While change often results from a need for improvement, our change is actually the result of an incredible accomplishment. Four years ago, the Alumni Association made an ambitious pledge of $150,000 to the School’s Forward Focus: Campaign for Casady capital campaign. An anonymous donor agreed to match this gift 3:1 when the association fulfilled the pledge.

On June 30 of this year, the Alumni Association made its final $30,000 payment and has now fulfilled its $150,000 commitment. When combined with the anonymous match, this gift has grown the Casady endowment by $600,000. This is an incredible accomplishment for our organization, especially given that we literally raised this money one piece of Estate Sale furniture and one golf foursome at a time.

With the Forward Focus scholarship endowment gift behind us, we must determine where the Alumni Association should now focus its efforts. One of our central missions is to keep alumni connected to Casady, whether they live in Oklahoma City or elsewhere. To this end, an official Casady Alumni Facebook page (the work of Alumni Association board member August Hadwiger and Alumni Director Betty Jane Garrett) has been created and has more than 600 friends. In addition to providing information relating to Casady news and events, this page provides a medium for alumni to reconnect. You can access it by visiting: www.facebook. com/casadyschoolalumni. Also, the alumni office distributes Connections, an email newsletter with events and subjects

related specifically to alumni. If you are not receiving this, please contact the alumni office with your current email address. The Young Alumni Committee hosted successful events last year at the 51st Street Speakeasy in December and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art rooftop in May. That committee will stage more gatherings this year as it works to bridge the time gap between being a Casady student and a Casady parent. Alumni of all ages living in or visiting Oklahoma City will find plenty of ways to connect with the School and other alumni during Homecoming Weekend Oct. 28-29.

The association will not have an Estate Sale during this school year. The Estate Sale was a successful event for our group and the School, and proceeds from past sales helped to fulfill our pledge to the capital campaign. The small group of alumni who organized and managed the event felt a strong bond with each other and with Casady. However, the Estate Sale also had its shortcomings. It represented a tremendous amount of work for a small group of volunteers and did not significantly further our association’s mission of growing a connection between all alumni and the School. The association board has decided to direct efforts toward new events that would involve a broader group of alumni. Look for announcements about these new and exciting alumni events.

The Casady Golf Tournament did prove to be a success this year and will continue. Sponsored by the Alumni Association and led by alumni board members, this event has served as our secondary fundraiser.

The Alumni Association will continue to assist the school with financial development. This is something that we both need and want to do for the School. Casady is fortunate to have many generous donors and has proven its ability to raise the necessary funds for its annual budget and specific projects.

However, Casady’s alumni participation in the Annual Fund for 2009-10 was a low 15 percent. Large donors and foundations consider alumni participation in annual giving when deciding whether and how much to contribute to Casady. Many alumni do not realize that making a small annual fund gift may be the most beneficial thing they can do for the School. Participation matters!

This year marks a great transition for the Alumni Association. Now that we have reached a significant goal and have increased the School’s endowment by $600,000, we will turn to new ways to help Casady and its alumni move forward together. Be a part of the Alumni Association’s efforts this year.

From the Casady Parents’ Organization Because of gracious and generous donations of time and talent, the Casady Parents’ Organization gifted in excess of $150,000 to Casady School this past year. This donation funds projects and specific needs designated by the School working in conjunction with the CPO. The 2009-10 school year kicked off with the annual Back to School Picnic. Hospitality Co-chairs Carol Johnson and Kathryn Wilson chaired the event and, along with help from the Gales, coordinated volunteers to welcome new families to the Casady community.

In November, Theresa Bozalis and Angela Reynolds chaired the Faculty Studies Dinner, a biannual event to raise funds for professional development.

The theme was “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?”

The work of their committee, Kevin Pleshko’s creative entertainment as emcee, and Geni Thomas-Woodward’s great dinner made for a very successful and fun evening.

Bingo Night, always popular with Primary and Lower Division families, was held in January. Kristen Bohanon and Denise Parsons did a wonderful job chairing this always noisy, fun event. Along with pizza and prizes, a mini-auction was held with fabulous themed gift baskets donated from each

Primary and Lower Division class. Thanks to everyone for raising funds and fun!

We were very fortunate to have Casady alumna Molly Wizenberg ’97 on campus in February for a book signing and presentation. Thank you, Jana Bright and Susan Eckman, for inviting Molly to return to our campus AND for chairing the return of the Casady Book Fair. The community, as well as those of us at Casady, welcomed back this great tradition.

The annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast was also held in February. With Ban and Yen Nguyen providing a tasty breakfast and Casey Williams coordinating the event, it was a great start to a sleepy morning back from mid-winter break, and one we look forward to in 2011.

It was a banner year for the Casady Cupboard. Kudos to Tonya Bell, Cupboard chair, for her tireless effort in managing this on-campus spot to pick up a t-shirt or an after-school snack. Concessions Chair Bob Griffiths kept the popcorn popping and the drinks cold during sporting events and provided a great service to students, parents and visitors to our campus. Concessions and the Casady Cupboard are open throughout the year and contribute annually to the total funds raised by the CPO. Thanks to all parents, volunteers and the 2009-10 CPO Board for another remarkable year. Looking forward, Lee Ann Nordin is serving as president in 2010-11 and Kristen Bohanon and Libby Naifeh are planning the Cirque du Cyclone Light the Night auction to be held in November. You won’t want to miss it! We hope you will join us in our continued support of Casady School!

Casady’s Annual Fund: Participation Matters! 

The Annual Fund is the largest annual fundraiser for Casady School. Each year the Annual Fund raises more than three quarters of a million dollars and harnesses the energy and dedication of dozens of volunteers who want the best for our students.

Philanthropy is a longstanding tradition at Casady, and the Annual Fund ensures that everyone who cares about the School can participate at some level. While millions of dollars are needed to build new buildings during capital campaigns, gifts at all levels are important to make the Annual Fund successful. The real key to the Annual Fund is participation – not the amount of each gift. This campaign relies on the fact that every single person who has a vested interest in the success of our School believes in our collective responsibility to participate together to ensure that it remains strong.

Tuition pays for only about 80 percent of the cost of educating a student at Casady, and the Annual Fund is an important way that funds are raised to underwrite the additional costs. In fact, the Annual Fund is a line item in the School’s budget – these funds must be raised to offset the actual expenses of operating the School for the year.

The good news is that Casady has met or exceeded its Annual Fund goal for the past five years. Donors to the Annual Fund have given more than $4 million over the past five years.

Based on the success of these prior campaigns and the new plans being set in place by new staff and leadership, we are confident our Annual Fund campaign can grow to more than $1 million annually over the next few years.

Casady has produced the most Presidential Scholars of all independent schools in Oklahoma. Since 1964, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars appointed by the President, annually selects scholars based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Garrett Zwahlen ‘10 joined a distinguished group of Casady graduates when he was named a Presidential Scholar in the spring of 2010. Casady graduates who have held this distinction are K. Michele Walters ‘84, Kermit L. Alexander ‘83 and Lee Ann Wise ‘76.
