Our annual Child of America gala raises crucial funding that transforms the lives of Norwalk’s young people. It is just as importantly an opportunity for Carver to honor its heroes. The first Child of America award was given to the late Pulitzer Prizewinning historian, journalist and activist Roger Wilkins in 2002. This year, we are deeply grateful to Marcus Mabry at CNN for accepting the Child of America award and for joining all of our friends and advocates gathered here this evening.

We also honor a Norwalk corporate leader this evening, Austin McChord, CEO and founder of Datto, Inc. We are deeply grateful for Datto’s investment in Carver students and for inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM-related industries. We are excited about Datto’s continuing commitment to be involved with Carver on many levels in the future.

Thanks to your support, Carver kids are building healthy relationships and a vibrant community. Your commitment helps Carver to recognize the individual strengths, needs, learning styles, and potential of the young people in our care. The saying ‘it takes a village’ is no truer illustrated as you look around the room this evening. Please take a moment to look through this book of greetings from Carver’s fellow ’village’ of heroes. Your support empowers Carver to uphold high expectations for Carver youth with the goal of graduating high school on time and college-ready. After 79 years, this amazing ‘village’ enables the Carver mission to live on because of selfless people like you. Your personal commitments to furthering the Carver mission has facilitated the success of decades of youth; and for this we thank you. We are grateful to Carver’s Executive Director, Novelette Peterkin, for keeping the Carver vision vibrant and responsive to new opportunities for the benefit of Carver students and their families. Leah Glover and Jacqueline Novotny Gala Committee Co-Chairs

Child of America Award Each year, Carver honors leaders in the fight for educational opportunity and a just society with its Child of America award. We used this occasion to honor Dick Whitcomb with an exceptional Lifetime Achievement Award in May 2013. All honorees are exceptional role models for our youth, who through their thought, word and deeds inspire us all.

Child of America Award Marcus Mabry, 2017 Child of America Honoree Marcus Mabry is an award-winning journalist and author. The Director of Mobile News Programming at CNN, he leads the team responsible for getting CNN’s stories and videos on smart phones, watches, tablets and other mobile devices. Before coming to CNN, Mabry was the first editor of Twitter Moments, Twitter’s news product. And before that he spent 8 years as an editor at The New York Times and spent 19 years at Newsweek. Mabry began his career at his hometown newspaper, The Trentonian in Trenton, New Jersey, where he was raised by a single mother and benefited from many government programs to help the poor, including welfare, Head Start and college grants. He attended The Lawrenceville School, where he is a trustee today, on full scholarship and then attended Stanford University, where he earned his bachelor and master degrees in four years. After working at The Trentonian, he interned at The Boston Globe and then Newsweek. He ended his career there as the Chief of Correspondents, responsible for managing and deploying the magazine’s domestic and international correspondents, after stints as a State Department Correspondent in Washington, a foreign correspondent in Paris and Johannesburg and an editor based in New York. At The New York Times, Mabry was the International Business Editor, the associate national editor covering politics, a webcast anchor and a digital editor. Mabry’s first book, published in 1995 when he was 28 years old, is the memoir White Bucks and Black-Eyed Peas: Coming of Age Black in White America (Scribner’s), which retells his journey from poverty to prep school to the summits of American news media. His second book is the groundbreaking Twice as Good: Condoleezza Rice and Her Path to Power (Modern Times/Rodale, 2007), an intimate examination of the life and career of then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The winner of numerous journalism prizes – including the New York Association of Black Journalists’ Trailblazer and Personal Commentary awards, as well as the Overseas Press Club’s Morton Frank Award for Best Business Reporting – Mabry was also the 1999-2000 recipient of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Press Fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He is a member of the Membership Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations and the immediate past president of the Overseas Press Club of America. He is a Life Trustee of The Oliver Scholars Program, which helps gifted African-American and Latino New York City public school students enter and succeed at independent schools. He is a past secretary of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists’ Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Mabry graduated with honors from The Lawrenceville School in 1985, and from Stanford University in 1989 with B.A. degrees in English and French literatures and International Relations and a Masters with distinction in English. He also studied at the Sorbonne and the Institut des Etudes Politiques de Paris. In addition to The New York Times, his work has appeared in Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, The Davos Daily, and the South African Institute of International Affairs’ 1999 Year Book. He has keynoted conferences on democracy (U.S. Embassy-Vienna, 2000); diversity (The Six Banks, The City, London, 2001 and 2002); and education (International Studies Schools Association, 2006). He has been a frequent television commentator on politics, world affairs and public opinion on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. Fluent in French, in addition to being an occasional contributor to BBC Radio’s French language service, Mabry has also produced and anchored the television newsmagazine Reportages on TF1 (Télévision Française).

Austin McChord, CEO and Founder, Datto, Inc., The Community Builder Honoree Austin McChord is the chief innovator and driving force behind Datto. When Austin founded Datto in 2007 his goal was to create the best backup and disaster recovery (BDR) and business continuity (BC) solution available; he succeeded. Concurrently, he has led Datto to incredible growth. Datto is making an investment in Carver students through its philanthropy and by inspiring Carver students to pursue careers in STEM-related industries by inviting groups of students to visit with Datto staff at the Norwalk headquarters. Datto has made the coveted Inc. 500 for three consecutive years, in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The company has also received numerous industry awards, for company growth, product excellence and technical support. More than the accolades, Austin is proud to have created a unique culture at Datto; to always look ahead, exceed expectations, and keep Datto Partners at the forefront of everything we do. Austin McChord is major shareholder at Datto. He has a degree in Bioinformatics from Rochester Institute of Technology, and holds several patents. In 2014 he was named a Finalist for Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, as well as named a CRN Top 25 Innovator and a CRN Top 50 Midmarket IT Vendor Executive. Austin sits on the Board of the Connecticut Technology Council. Past Community Builder Honorees include Pitney Bowes, Affinion Group, GE, Stew Leonard’s, Norwalk Hospital, Bank of America, Deloitte, Pepperidge Farm, and Ring’s End.

Craig Glover, Gala 2017 Master of Ceremonies Craig Glover, a member of the Carver Board of Directors, is the Chief Executive Officer of Norwalk Community Health Center. Mr. Glover previously served as president and chief executive officer of a Midwestern community health center from 2011 through 2013 and vice president of a St. Louis-based community health center from 2004 until 2011. His other professional experiences include various leadership positions in information technology. Mr. Glover holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business administration from Fontbonne University. He is currently pursuing a doctorate of philosophy in organizational leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University. Mr. Glover is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). He is also a member of the College of Medical Practice Executives and a certified medical practice executive (CMPE). Mr. Glover is active in the Norwalk community such as serving on the advisory committee of Norwalk ACTS. He is also a board trustee of Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Glover and his wife Leah (our 2017 Gala Co-Chair and also a member of the Carver Board of Directors) enjoy spending time with their daughter Olivia, boating, and traveling.

Adegbile, director of litigation for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. For the 10th annual awards ceremony, we honored Elizabeth “Betty” Molina Morgan, Ph.D., Executive Director of GradNation, an initiative of the America’s Promise Alliance. Founded in 1997, the America’s Promise Alliance, chaired by Mrs. Alma Powell, named the City of Norwalk among the “100 Best Communities for Young People” in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Its founding chairman is General Colin Powell. Dr. Morgan was the former superintendent of Washington County Schools in Maryland and the 2010 American Association of School Administrators” National Superintendent of the Year. In 2012, we honored Alberto M. Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In 2013, we honored Richard Whitcomb with Carver’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2014, we honored Morris “Mo” Pleasure, American composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and touring musician, with the Child of America award at his performance at Carnegie Hall for his work with Carver’s Youth Voice initiatives. Last year, we honored Dr. Marlen Bodden, a celebrated lawyer at the Legal Aid Society and acclaimed author. Carver alumnae Gabrielle Pierre-Louis (“Gabbie”) is studying to be a dentist, inspired by years of helping her family deliver humanitarian relief and dental care in particular to Haiti and other places in need. 79 YEARS OF BUILDING LIFETIME ACHIEVERS! In a world where talent is evenly distributed but opportunity is not, Carver is closing the gap in Norwalk, Connecticut.

AFTERSCHOOL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – Middle School Students Carver is the largest provider of after-school programs for middle and high school students in Norwalk. Carver’s college-prep Youth Development Program is conducted in the Carver Community Center, in Norwalk’s four middle and two comprehensive high schools, and in Side by Side Charter School. Programming led by certified teachers within each participating school compliments the school day curriculum with project-based and personalized learning. We provide free transportation. Carver conducts a K-5 after school program at the Carver Community Center called CASPER.

SUMMER Carver summer learning programs include Summer Enrichment (5- to 13year-old students at two sites); Freshman Summer Success Academies for graduated 8th-grade students transitioning into 9th grade at Norwalk and Brien McMahon High Schools; and summer learning experience for 5thgrade students transitioning into middle school.

COMMUNITY Carver Community programming includes college scholarships, winning basketball teams, international learning opportunities, parent leadership, health and wellness programming, spring and fall college tours, food drives, community holiday events and more for the benefit of Carver students and the Norwalk community. Since 2005, 100 percent of Carverâ€™s seniors have graduated on time and nearly 100% of our graduates go on to college. 85% of Carver students graduate college within 6 years.

This evening, “WeR1,” written by Morris Pleasure and his wife, Lori, will be sung for the first time to an audience by Carver alumnae Gabrielle Pierre-Louis. Morris “Mo” Pleasure received Carver’s Child of America award at a performance at Carnegie Hall in 2014, the only time this honor was ever conferred apart from this annual gala. The award recognized Pleasure’s volunteer support of Carver’s “Youth Voice” initiative, WeR1Voice. Born and educated in Connecticut, Pleasure is an American composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and touring musician. He has recorded and performed with artists such as Ray Charles, Najee, George Duke, Earth, Wind & Fire (a band member for 10 years), Roberta Flack, Christina Aguilera, Peter Cetera, Mary J. Blige, David Foster, Bette Midler, and many others. Pleasure appeared in the documentary, This Is It, and Janet Jackson’s film, Janet: Live in Hawaii. Gabrielle Pierre-Louis and many other Carver youth, with the support of Factory Underground (see pages 24 and 25 in this Program Journal), are now working with Pleasure to advance WeR1Voice to an audience far beyond Norwalk.
