The Carver Community 78 years of building lifetime achievers!

In a world where talent is evenly distributed but opportunity is not, Carver is closing the gap. Carver is the largest provider of after‐school programs for middle and high school students in Norwalk. Carver’s college‐prep Youth Development Program is conducted in the Carver Community Center, in Norwalk’s four middle and two comprehensive high schools, and in Side by Side Charter School. Programming led by certified teachers within each participating school compliments the school day curriculum with project‐based and personalized learning. We provide free transportation. Carver conducts a K‐5 after school program at the Carver Community Center called CASPER. These students also follow a personalized learning path with placement and pacing in activities designed to meet their individual needs while meeting the most rigorous academic standards. Certified NPS teachers facilitate literacy and math intervention programs. Carver summer learning programs include Summer Enrichment (5‐ to 13‐year‐old students at two sites); Freshman Summer Success Academies for graduated 8th‐ grade students transitioning into 9th grade at Norwalk and Brien McMahon High Schools; and summer learning experience for 5th‐grade students transitioning into middle school. Carver Community programming includes college scholarships, winning basketball teams, international learning opportunities, parent leadership, health and wellness programming, spring and fall college tours, food drives, community holiday events and more for the benefit of Carver students and the Norwalk community. Since 2005, 100 percent of Carver’s seniors have graduated on time and nearly 100% of our graduates go on to college. After 78 years, Carver is still raising expectations, changing lives, and Building Lifetime Achievers!

Dear Mission Partners

Dear Mission Partners, Our students are greatly benefiting from your continued support this year! Last year, our Youth Development Program served 670 students, and individualized intervention programs served an additional 60 students. This year, our goal is to serve 690 YDP students and an additional 120 students with personalized intervention programs. Our donors, partners, and advocates are sustaining and creating these opportunities for our young people. A Norwalk family is establishing a new scholarship fund at Carver this year that will award one student per year a $40,000 scholarship, to be paid in increments of $10,000 a year over the student’s four years of undergraduate college studies. This new fund will eventually grow to support four students at a time with $40,000 four‐year commitments. A Carver alumna, Jasmine Brown, is championing this year’s alumni campaign for college scholarships. Surviving an extremely disadvantaged childhood, Jasmine graduated from Virginia State University, Cum Laude in 2013. She now works for a nearby social service agency while attending Sacred Heart University, where she is working towards her Teacher Certification and Masters of Arts in Elementary Education. Her plan is to teach in an inner‐city elementary school for three years to gain classroom experience, and then pursue a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Carver’s significant growth in these past years is the result of proving the integrity and results of our youth development methodologies, and because of the generous commitment friends like you make to our young people. Their hard work and consistent achievement are well worth your investment of time and resources. Your involvement produces priceless benefits to individual Carver students and our community for generations to come. Sincerely, Novele#e Peterkin Execu!ve Director

After School

Carver is the largest provider of after‐school programs for middle and high school students in Norwalk. Carver’s college‐prep Youth Development Program (YDP) is conducted at the Carver Community Center, in Norwalk’s four middle and two comprehensive high schools, and in Side by Side Charter School. Programming led by certified teachers within each participating school compliments the school day curriculum with project‐based and personalized learning. YDP provides academic, Literacy, Math, Technology, Engineering, Science, enrichment, recreation and wellness programming through structured activities that prove year after year to achieve significant results.

Carver offers student families literacy and related educational opportunities and support. YDP provides students (a minimum of 4 days per week, 2.5 hours per day, not including field trips, college tours, career fairs, etc.) with a variety of learning opportunities that compliment and enrich, but do not duplicate, school‐day instruction, utilizing the Scientific Research‐Based Interventions (SRBI) three‐tier learning framework.

After School

The Carver YDP model includes a close partnership with Norwalk Public Schools; certified teachers; outside experts; project‐based learning; local school‐by‐school curriculum flexibility; central data collection and student‐by‐student analysis by Carver; collaborative assessment and change management; community funding; a scalable model for district‐wide impact; and a cultural grounding with 78‐years of history in Norwalk. YDP offers opportunities not available during the school day and collaborates regularly with school‐day teachers to assess individual student needs. YDP incorporates comprehensive use of each school site. Each day is balanced with academic, enrichment, and health and wellness programming. Tutoring, instruction in math and science, robotics, literacy, life skills, creative writing, PSAT Preparation, intense SAT preparation, guidance counseling, and (for high school) paid internships and work opportunities are some of the opportunities YDP offers. We ignite student interest through project‐based learning, team‐based learning competitions, and by incorporating input from working professionals.

Summer Learning

Our five summer learning programs served 646 students this past summer in grades K through 9th grade. Programs ranged from summer academic and enrichment programs for K through 13‐year‐ old kids, to intensive summer transition programs for students entering middle and high school. Students, parents and supporting foundation executives alike gave us positive feedback. The Department of Health gave Carver a perfect score following their unannounced examination of the Carver Center and Columbus Magnet School sites, finding Carver in full compliance with a book of hundreds of pages of regulations. Many sophisticated studies have concluded that students lose at least a month of learning every summer, with the fall‐off of math knowledge and spelling skills being particularly pronounced. The results are worse for children in lower socio‐economic groups. In learning, as in other spheres, the poor lose the most. But not Carver kids! Their summer was one to remember and one that informs each day in the classroom in the 2016‐ 2017 academic year.

Community

The George Washington Carver Community Center is a place for many community activities and services from food drives to holiday and awards celebrations, from sports leagues to career fairs, from after school programs and summer camp to adult education programs, reaching thousands of people each year young and old. Last December, Mayor Harry Rilling; Senator Bob Duff; Representatives Gail Lavielle and Fred Wilms; Common Council members John Igneri and Eloisa Melendez; Sandy Bria, GE Capital; Norwalk Public Schools administrators; Carver board members; and many others gathered at Carver to announce the gift that would establish a new technology center on the second floor of the Carver Community Center. The late Charlotte Naomi Horblit bequeathed nearly $500,000 to Carver. Mrs. Horblit’s nephew, Mark D. Feinberg, was given the privilege of naming Carver as one of seven charitable beneficiaries of Mrs. Horblit’s estate. Carver’s new technology center will offer resources to help bridge the digital divide resulting in a more educated community, more able workforce, and a better‐connected community.

Volunteers

Carver engages more than 500 volunteers throughout the year. Carver volunteers are integrated throughout the Norwalk community and schools as they contribute to Carver’s three intense areas of after‐school, summer and community programs. These tutors, mentors, homework helpers, career counselors, and other skill‐specific project leaders offer their support, feedback and praise. The community center utilizes individual and groups of volunteers for community events such as Career Fairs, talent contests, student and family awards ceremonies, holiday celebrations, food drives, etc. Corporate teams produce daylong events for our youth and undertake extensive renovation and cleanup projects. Carver dedicates one staff person to volunteer management.

Child of America Gala

Gala Co‐Chairs, Wendy Winnick‐Baskin and Leah Glover, and the Gala Committee organized a wonderfully successful gala for some 300 guests at the Wee Burn Country Club in Darien on Friday, May 20th, 2016. In addition to a fun dinner and auction, each year Carver honors exceptional role models for our youth who through their thought, word and deeds inspire us all. Charles Burns was our 2016 Child of America Honoree. Charles is President Emeritus of Carver’s Board of Directors. His commitment to the Carver mission began in 1975. He served as President of the Carver Board of Directors on two occasions. Charles and longtime Carver friend Barbara Cox initiated Carver’s first Child of America Award Dinner fifteen years ago. Charles and his wife Elizabeth chaired the 8th Child of America Gala. Past Child of America Award recipients include Pulitzer Prize‐winning author, Roger Wilkins; Geoffrey Canada, former President and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone; Cynthia Thompson, National Chair of The Girl Scouts Of America; James Comer, the Maurice Faulk Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale; Helene Gayle, CEO of CARE; The Reverend Dr. James A. Forbes, the Senior Minister Emeritus of The Riverside Church in New York City; Debo P. Adegbile, then the Director of Litigation, NAACP LDF; Dr. Marlen Bodden, Legal Aid Society and author; Morris “Mo” Pleasure, American composer, producer, multi‐instrumentalist; and Richard Whitcomb, President Emeritus of St. Luke’s School. This years Child of America gala will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017.

Annual Golf Classic

The Third Annual Carver Golf Outing at the Country Club of Fairfield was held on Thursday, September 29, 2016. Event co‐chairs Michael Gregorich, Carol Howe, Janine & Michael Smith, Jonathan Whitcomb and Richard Whitcomb created a perfect day for one and all. The day of golf began on the putting & driving range and a grill lunch and concluded with a cocktail reception, prizes, silent auction, and dinner. This is a special time of fellowship and sport for the benefit of Carver’s young people, a time that honors our students’ effort and achievement.

Connections, Friends & Alumni

Connections! These house parties are a valuable time for friends to gather in their communities to learn about and celebrate Carver’s mission and accomplishments. Drs. Susan and Norman Weinberger led Norwalk Connections at the home of Michael Mushak and David Westmoreland. A large committee of longtime Carver friends led the 13th annual Rowayton Connections, this past year hosted by Rick Kleeman. We are deeply grateful to the Connections committee members and hosts for their generosity and thoughtfulness in opening their lovely homes and inviting their neighbors to learn about and support Carver youth. Carver alumni across nearly eight decades and across the country keep the connections, conversations and traditions going as well. Carver alumna, Jasmine Brown, is championing this year’s alumni campaign for college scholarships. There are also many other alumni volunteering and advocating for Carver youth. Look to the Carver website for regular updates on what our community is doing for the advancement of Carver and the young people we serve.
