Jan Schumacher Zum großen Beethoven-Jubiläum erweitert Carus das Repertoire für gemischte Chöre: Neben wenig bekannten frühen A-cappella-Werken sowie Klavier­fassungen aus dem chorsinfonischen Repertoire – darunter auch selten Auf­ geführtes z.B. aus den Schauspielmusiken – bietet das Chorbuch Beethoven besonders reizvolle Bearbeitungen Beethoven’scher Musik aus drei Jahrhunderten. Schon zu seinen Lebzeiten wurde Beethoven so verehrt, dass Zeitgenossen seine Musik – zumeist die bekannten Instrumentalwerke – für Chor arrangierten. So erklangen selbst bei Beethovens eigener Beerdigung solche Chorsätze.

Auch nachfolgende Komponisten-Generationen haben sich mit dem Beethoven’schen Œuvre intensiv aus­einandergesetzt. Zum Jubiläum hat Carus zudem einige zeitgenössische Komponisten mit Chor­arrangements Beethoven’scher Werke beauftragt.

For the major Beethoven anniversary Carus is expanding the repertoire of works available for mixed choirs. The Choral Collection Beethoven contains especially attractive arrangements of Beethoven’s music from three centuries. Contents include the choral-symphonic repertoire in versions with piano accompaniment, some lesser-known unaccompanied works, and some seldom-performed works, such as pieces from his incidental music. During his lifetime Beethoven was so admired that contemporaries arranged his music – mainly the well-known instrumental works – for chorus. Some of these choral works were even performed at Beethoven’s own funeral.

Subsequent generations of composers have also immersed themselves in Beethoven’s output. In addition, for the anniversary Carus has commissioned choral arrangements of Beethoven’s works from several contemporary composers.

His six symphonically conceived masses (from 1796 onwards) are the point dolce of departure for both of Beethoven’s contributions to this genre, of which the Missa solemnis (1824), by virtue of its expanded dimensions, exceeds the bounds of a church.

Die Missa solemnis bezeichnete Beethoven mehrfach als sein größtes Werk, welches „von Herzen“ kommend die Menschen berühren und bewegen sollte. Die überlieferten Quellen lassen erkennen, wie intensiv und lange sich Beet­hoven mit der Komposition beschäftigte, um dem Text einen – in seinem Sinne – adäquaten Ausdruck zu verleihen. In ihrem Umfang und musikalischen Anspruch reicht die Missa solemnis weit über das liturgisch Übliche hinaus, die Uraufführung fand nicht ohne Grund in einem Konzertsaal statt. Der Chor übernimmt in dem Werk eine strukturell wesentliche Rolle und hat dabei Partien von hohem Anspruch zu bewältigen.

Eine unterhaltsame und leicht verständliche Einführung zur Missa solemnis enthält der erste Band der Reihe ­Wort//Werk//Wirkung, den Carus in Kooperation mit der Deutschen Bibelgesellschaft herausgibt. Er beleuchtet das Werk in allen Facetten aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven – sowohl aus musikwissenschaftlicher als auch aus theologischer – und enthält die ausgezeichnete Einspielung des Werks mit dem Kammerchor Stuttgart, der Hofkapelle Stuttgart unter Leitung von Frieder Bernius.

Beethoven described his Missa solemnis as his greatest work several times, a work which, coming “from the heart,” was to touch and move audiences. The surviving sources enable us to recognize how intensively and how long he worked on the composition in order to give what he felt was adequate expression to the text. In its length and musical demands, the Missa solemnis goes far beyond typical liturgical settings, and the premiere took place, for good reason, in a concert hall. The chorus plays a key structural role in the work, and in the process has to master some extremely demanding sections.

The leading Beethoven expert Ernst H ­ erttrich has produced an Urtext edition based on the available sources, and reflecting the latest state of scholarship.

Helpful support for rehearsing the demanding choral parts comes in the form of practice aids – practice CDs in the Carus Choir Coach series, and a version in carus music, the choir app.

In his Passion oratorio The Mount of Olives Beethoven looked towards contemporary opera, to depict in music the situation of the doubting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest. The work is characterized less by Beethoven religious devotion and much more by the dramatic realivocal zation of this specific situation in the Passion story. With its deeply-felt musical scenes this is an unusual PassionC_Carus oratorio which is definitely worth hearing and experiencing. In this form it is without doubt unique in the history of vocal-instrumental sacred music.

Bei der Komposition des Passionsoratoriums Christus am Ölberge orientierte sich Beethoven an der zeitgenössischen Oper, um die Situation des zweifelnden Jesus im Garten Gethsemane und die Gefangennahme musikalisch umzusetzen. Das Werk ist daher weniger geprägt von religiöser Andacht als vielmehr von der dramatischen Umsetzung der spezifischen Situation. Mit seinen musikalisch tiefempfundenen Szenen ist das Werk ein unbedingt hörens- und erlebenswertes, ungewöhnliches Passion­soratorium. In dieser Ausformung ist es zweifellos einmalig in der Geschichte vokal-­instrumentaler geistlicher Musik.

In einer Mischung aus Kantate und Konzertstück vertont Beethoven in der Chorfantasie eine Hymne auf die Kunst. Das etwa zwanzigminütige Werk wird oft als Vorläufer der „Ode an die Freude“ der 9. Symphonie gesehen. Nach einer Klavier­einleitung entspinnt sich über knapp vierhundert Takte ein Dialog zwischen Klavier und Orchester, der Chor bringt sich in den letzten rund zweihundert Takten am Geschehen ein. In dem „Finale“ überschriebenen Hauptteil wird das zugrunde liegende Thema aus einem frühen Lied ­Beethovens vorgestellt und variiert.

Hauptquelle für die Edition ist der in Stimmen erschienene und von Beethoven überprüfte Erstdruck aus dem Jahr 1811, daneben wird der englische Stimmendruck von Clementi (1810) als Vergleichsquelle herangezogen.

In the Choral Fantasy, Beethoven creates the setting of a hymn in praise of art in a mixture of cantata and concert piece. The twenty-minute work is often regarded as a precursor of the “Ode to Joy” from the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialogue between piano and orchestra unfolds over almost 400 measures; the choir is involved in the last 200 bars of the piece. In the main section entitled “Finale”, the theme from an early song from Beethoven is introduced and varied.

The main source for the present edition is the first print from 1811, published as a set of parts and proofread

by Beethoven; in addition, the English print of a set of parts published by Clementi (1810) is used as a comparative source.

The English singable text is a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the 19th century.

Das Meer befuhr Beethoven zwar nie, doch seine 1815 uraufgeführte Komposition erstaunt bis heute: Die glatte Fläche des bewegungslosen Wassers und die bedrückende Windstille, die im Zeitalter der Segelschiffe nichts anderes bedeutete als Immobilität, Reiseverzögerung und knapp werdende Lebensmittel, musikalisierte der Komponist ebenso intensiv wie den auffrischenden, immer stärker werdenden Wind, mit dem Äolus, der Gott der Winde, schließlich die ersehnte „Glückliche Fahrt“ ermöglicht.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, den Beethoven zeit­ lebens emphatisch verehrte, ist das Werk auch gewidmet.

Beethoven’s Meeres Stille und Glückliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 for four-part mixed chorus and symphony orchestra – his setting of a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – defies straightforward categorization, but can best be described as a choral ode. Beethoven in fact never voyaged by sea, but his composition, premiered in 1815, continues to surprise even today.

He depicted in music the smooth surface of the motionless water and the oppressive calm, which meant nothing other than being becalmed, a delayed voyage, and short rations in the era of sailing, with the same intensity as a freshening increasing wind, with which Aeolus, the God of the winds, ultimately enabled the longed-for “prosperous voyage” to take place. The work was dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom Beethoven greatly admired throughout his life.

Sakrileg oder Geniestreich? Der Komponist und Kapellmeister Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772–1840) instrumentierte den 1. Satz der berühmten „Mondscheinsonate“ von Beethoven für Orchester (transponiert nach c-Moll) und fügte diesem einen vierstimmigen Chorsatz hinzu, den er mit dem Text des Kyrie aus dem lateinischen Ordinarium unterlegte. Das Ergebnis ist ebenso stimmig wie verblüffend!

Fassungen für Chor und Orgel bzw. für Chor und Klavier (beide cis-Moll) sind ebenfalls erhältlich.

A sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and music director Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772–1840) orchestrated the first movement of the famous “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin mass. The result is as harmonious as it is astounding!

Versions for choir and organ, and choir and piano (both like the original version in C sharp minor) are also available.

Das kurze, in seiner Stimmung zwischen stillem Schmerz und Drama changierende Chorstück mit dezenter Streicherbegleitung erschien 1826 erstmals im Druck. Zusätzlich zu den Vokal- und Streicherstimmen Beethoven vocal enthielt der Stimmensatz eine Klavierstimme, die anstelle der Streicher verwendet werden kann. Diese Klavier­ stimme ist auch dem Carus-Klavierauszug zugrunde gelegt. Eine Aufführung nur mit Chor und Klavier ist damit gut möglich – eine wenn auch nicht „originale“, so doch von Anfang an verbreitete Ver­sion. l

The short choral piece, alternating between quiet pain and drama and with a discreet string accompaniment, was published for the first time in 1826. In addition to the vocal and string parts, there is a piano part which can be used as an alternative to the strings. This piano part is used as the basis of the Carus vocal score. A performance with just chorus and piano is therefore possible – although not the original version, this was one which was widespread from the beginning.
