Why drift along while you “pay your dues”? Get your feet wet at Carthage soon after moving in.

1. NASA For 11 straight years, Carthage has sent students into zero-g to conduct research for NASA and advance spaceflight technology. No other U.S. undergraduate program can say that. Some microgravity team members have flown multiple times in their first year.

Tackling genomics experiments in our introductory biology course, freshmen use electron microscopes that larger universities keep off limits until graduate school. And Carthage students of any major can get funding to do research or scholarly projects with faculty in summer.

3. Classroom Hours Looking to teach? Count on becoming a familiar face in local schools, where Carthage education students accumulate 135 hours before their student teaching semester. Make that 450+ for those entering our new urban teacher program.

4. New Play Initiative Oscars. Emmys. Tonys. Golden Globes. The playwrights we’ve brought in have them. Each year, Carthage Theatre commissions an original script for its New Play Initiative. Our students work with the writer to stage it.

5. In-House Agency Build a portfolio without leaving campus. Students run Velocity Consulting, which works with business and nonprofit clients.

1. Corporate Dress Rehearsal Other than Starbucks, the most prominent spot in the A. W. Clausen Center for World Business (2004) might be the Troha Boardroom. Designed to replicate a corporate director suite, it lets you polish those presentation skills so you’ll be confident for the real thing.

2. Remote Presence Beyond the campus boundaries, dinosaur fossils are prepared at the Carthage Institute of Paleontology (2004) in Kenosha.

A lengthy pterodactyl flight away, Finca Esperanza (2013) serves as base camp for J-Term medical and water quality missions to Nicaragua.

3. Eye Spy Using a portable eye-tracking device (installed in 2018), psychology students gain real-time insight into people’s perception and reading habits.

athletic facilities Work out in a student fitness center recognized as one of the finest in the nation. Built in 2001, the N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center (TARC) has a 16-lane swimming pool, indoor rock climbing wall, 200-meter indoor track, racquetball courts, and 5,000-square-foot fitness center. Adjacent to it is the Tarble Arena, whose renovation in 2009 put the Carthage facility in the top 10% of all NCAA Division III institutions.

ways we teach differently

If you picture yourself slumped in a chair at the back of a classroom while some tweed-wearing professor lectures uninterrupted for an hour, well, let us give you a happy jolt of Carthage reality. Here are a few techniques our faculty use to connect with students and make their lessons come to life.

1. Replay History, Then Revise It Simulations are a popular staple in Carthage history classes.

The setting might be the Continental Congress in 1774 or India’s push for independence in 1945. Students portray figures with differing goals and motives, so the outcome inevitably strays from the historical reality — and that’s OK.

2. Why Magic Fools Us

jennifer madden, management and marketing In a single year as a consultant, Professor Jennifer Madden helped nonprofits win $9 million in grant funding by creatively attacking “wicked problems” — the kind so complex that solving them often creates other obstacles.

While earning her Ph.D., Prof. Madden came away with a strategy called business design that hammers wicked problems from several angles.

She’s proved it works for community groups, but you could easily apply it to almost any career. And we’ll help you.

Carthage now offers a Master of Science in business design and innovation. With Prof. Madden as the program director, students with a bachelor’s degree can add a master’s in just 10 months.

Winner of four national magic competitions, Professor Tony Barnhart performs rope tricks, coin tricks, and card tricks to demonstrate the psychological principle of inattentional blindness. “You know exactly what’s happening, and you still fall for it every time,” says Alison Mackey ’17.

3. Flip the Classroom Computer science students watch Professor Mark Mahoney’s recorded lectures in their free time so he can be nearby “when they do their real learning.” He has company: Physics professor Brant Carlson’s quantum mechanics video playlist has been viewed more than 250,000 times.

4. Si, Oui, and .mp3 Professor Pascal Rollet writes songs that highlight grammar points in French and Spanish. He uses software to merge synthesized instruments, guitar, and vocals into tunes a college audience can tolerate.

5. Pitch Your Business In Business to Business Marketing, students brainstorm an original product or service, study its feasibility, and carry out a marketing plan. Like on TV, the entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to a panel of experts — led by Professor J.J. Shields, who cut his shark teeth at Miller Brewing and ABB Robotics.

6. Brunch Time On the last day of the Frank Lloyd Wright course, professors Tom and Linda Noer hold class at their house. After 20-some days of field trips to architectural sites and discussions around a circular table, they serve a homemade breakfast and let students unveil their creative projects.

Take an academic stay-cation With an entire month devoted to a single class, J-Term is a requirement that doesn’t feel like one. Dozens of on-campus courses let you explore new academic territory without packing a suitcase.

Like Mathematical Knitting, offered for the first time in January 2017. Who knew so many advanced math concepts came into play while knitting a scarf or a pair of socks? Well, Professor Sara Jensen ’08 did.

as you do for the ‘w’ Sure, our well-stocked trophy case might suggest otherwise, but that hardware doesn’t come easily.

Carthage’s NCAA Division III sports teams regularly test their limits in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and the national arena. It demands supreme effort, considering we take the term “student-athlete” seriously. That makes the payoff even sweeter.

A Swimming Sweep Carthage asserted its dominance in the pool in 2018, as both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams captured CCIW championships. With the Lady Reds’ victory, 20 of Carthage’s 24 sports teams have won conference titles since 1992.

Mia Bennett ’18 became the 18th individual national champion for Carthage Athletics, winning the weight throw at the 2018 NCAA Division III women’s indoor track and field meet. Between indoor and outdoor competition, she’s made the AllAmerica team in three different throwing events.

Part of a Lady Reds team that earned national recognition for its 3.37 average GPA in 2017, Mia carved out time for an eye-opening J-Term study tour to South Africa. Accepted into Carthage’s newest graduate program, business design and innovation, she looks to add a Master of Science degree to her lengthy list of achievements.

Indoors Known as the TARC, our rec center is home to a 16-lane swimming pool, multipurpose courts surrounded by a 200-meter track, two racquetball courts, a rock-climbing wall, a dance studio, and a fitness center. Group fitness classes are offered throughout the school year.

Outdoors Most warm days, you can round up a group to smack a volleyball on our sand courts. Test your forehand across the street at the Smeds Tennis Center. Or take the scenic route and ride or run on the Pike Bike Trail, a paved 10-mile route that follows the river at the edge of our campus.
