biographies Rollo Dilworth is Vice Dean and Professor of Choral Music Education at Temple University’s Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in choral music education, he serves as conductor for the University Chorale. Prior to his appointment at Temple, Dilworth served as Director of Choral Activities and Music Education at North Park University in Chicago, IL for 13 years. Dilworth holds degrees from Case Western Reserve University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Northwestern University.

Dilworth has written and/or arranged over 150 choral works that are currently in print. His choral compositions are a part of the Henry Leck Creating Artistry Choral Series with Hal Leonard Corporation and Colla Voce Music Company.

He has recently published pieces with the Santa Barbara Music Publishing Company as part of the Mary Alice Stollak Choral Series. Dilworth is a contributing author for the Essential Elements for Choir and the Experiencing Choral Music textbook series, both published by the Hal Leonard Corporation/Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publications, and for Music Express! Teachers Magazine. He authored a book of choral warm-ups for elementary and secondary choral ensembles entitled Choir Builders: Fundamental Vocal Techniques for General and Classroom Use.

Dilworth is currently National Board Chair for Chorus America. He is an active life member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He also holds memberships with several other organizations, including the National Association for Music Education (NafME), the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). In 2017, he received the Temple University Faculty Award for Research and Creative Achievement.

biographies Marilyn Nelson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, into a military family: she is the daughter of one of the last of the Tuskegee Airmen. Her mother was a teacher.

Nelson spent much of her youth living on different military bases and began writing poetry in elementary school. She earned her BA from the University of California at Davis, her MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and her PhD from the University of Minnesota. An accomplished poet and translator, Nelson has also written numerous books for children and young adults. She is a three-time finalist for the National Book Award, winner of the Robert Frost medal, and the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim Foundation, among other honors. In 2013, Nelson was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. In 2017, she was recognized with both the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children and the prestigious NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature. In 2019 she was awarded the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation. She is a professor emerita at the University of Connecticut at Storrs and was Connecticut’s poet laureate from 2001 to 2006.

Marylin Nelson on translating Psalm 23: When invited to sit with a psalm for this initiative, my first thought was of the 23rd Psalm, whose comforting words and images so many of us know from memory. I knew I didn’t quite understand all of it, but I remembered scenes in movies in which there is an inescapable crisis to which a character responds either by closing their eyes and reciting those familiar words, or by crying “Mommy!” It seemed clear to me that this was the psalm I should work with, the psalm of faith and hope. I am grateful for being given this opportunity to meditate on Psalm 23, to learn more about it and understand it more deeply. The trust it expresses seems especially encouraging just now, as we pray our way through this pandemic and the centuries-old plague of racism and brutality in this country. Here I offer a reading of the 23rd Psalm. I hope it will be a balm Peter Dennee is professor of music, coordinator of music education, and chair of the African studies minor at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Along with conducting the Carthage Treble Choir and Chorale, Dr. Dennee teaches courses in music education, global music, African music and arts, and courses within the Carthage Honors Program. Dr. Dennee was a Fulbright Scholar in Tanzania in 20202021 where he taught at Tumaini University Makumira and completed a research project on the music of the Chagga, Maasai, and Meru. He is associate editor of the 2016 choral textbook series Voices in Concert jointly published by McGraw Hill and Hal Leonard. Prior to his appointment at Carthage College in 2005, Dr. Dennee held positions as assistant professor of music at West Virginia University and Susquehanna University, and visiting assistant professorships at the University of Colorado-Boulder and The University of Michigan. He taught music at elementary and secondary levels in Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Tempe, Arizona. Choirs under Dr. Dennee’s direction have performed at state, regional, and divisional conferences, and on tours throughout the Midwest, nationally, and internationally in Central Europe, China, and Tanzania.

Dr. Dennee earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University, a Masters of Music from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Carthage College. Professor Dennee has traveled with

biographies Carthage students to Africa nine times. The majority of these trips have been to Namibia where, among other things, students complete a service-learning project at the Oonte Centre for Orphans and Vulnerable Children. Dr. Dennee has worked with the children’s choir at the Centre and produced a CD of the choir, For We Are: Songs of Light, Love, and Hope, used as a funding source for operations at the Centre. He is active as a composer, clinician, guest teacher and conductor.

Melissa Cardamone has been a staff accompanist and coach with Carthage College since 2010. She is also a classically trained soprano. At Carthage, her duties include playing for the Carthage Treble Choir and the Carthage Chorale. She accompanies the musical theater workshop classes and plays in the pit for their performances.

In addition, students may sign up for individual coaching of their recital repertoire, audition material, or lesson work. She enjoys playing for student recitals and assisting with the annual Christmas Festival. Melissa is grateful for the opportunity she has had to travel to China, Tanzania, Florida, and through the Midwest on tours with both of her choirs. Ms. Cardamone has sung and played in the Milwaukee area with companies such as Milwaukee Opera Theatre, the Sunset Playhouse, the Florentine Opera, Milwaukee Chamber Theater, The Belle Ensemble, Festival Arts Antioch, as well as the Racine Concert Band and the Kenosha Pops. She is a cantor and pianist at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kenosha. Melissa lives in Kenosha with her husband, Joe, two wonderful kids, and a pup named Finn.
