We’re excited to have you here! We look forward to meeting with you and hearing more about you. And we hope you enjoy visiting our beautiful campus and learning more about our program, our students, and who we are.

Once our auditions are concluded in early March, we will contact you to let you know about placement in the department, and whether you have been awarded a scholarship. If you are awarded a scholarship, we will then send you an official letter with the award amount and scholarship details. Please sign and return a copy of this letter on or before May 1 to signify your acceptance.

We know that choosing a college is hard and we want to help you make an informed decision. Our faculty and students are glad to answer any questions about us or our programs. I also recommend you schedule a campus visit or create a virtual visit this spring. We can find ways to share the experience of attending classes, rehearsals, meeting with current students, or attending a performance. Wartburg Theatre The Carthage Theatre Department presents Eurydice, by Sarah Ruhl and directed

by Ella Spoelstra ‘21. This theatre production is open to Carthage Faculty, Staff, and Students only. Tickets are required and must be obtained in advance.

In Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love, Orpheus. Heartbroken at the loss of his wife, Orpheus subsequently pursues Eurydice to the underworld and bargains with Hades to bring her back to the land of the living. These events are spelled out in the classic myth, but the ending leaves a little more up to the imagination. The traditional myth suggests that on the way out of the underworld, Orpheus looked back at Eurydice out of his own fear that she was falling behind. But wait, says Sarah Ruhl in this play, perhaps it isn’t that simple -- what if something else happened? What if Eurydice’s return was not accidental, but instead by design? With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists, and breathtaking visual effects, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story.

Away from the Mirror March 5-6 | 7:30 p.m.

Wartburg Theatre The Carthage Theatre Department presents Away from the Mirror, a dance concert choreographed by Carthage dance students. This dance production is open to Carthage Faculty, Staff, and Students only. Tickets are required and must be obtained in advance.

The Department of Theatre presents its annual student dance concert, Away From The Mirror, providing Carthage’s emerging artists opportunities to develop their inspirations through dance, to share in the development of their own production, and to engage in community discourse. The program will feature new dance works developed by dance minors in a less produced revelation of the dance making process. At the beginning of each new school year, dance minors are invited to share their ideas for new dance works, the most promising of which are selected for inclusion in the annual Away From the Mirror concert. Throughout the fall semester, students then work both individually and with faculty to develop and hone their choreographic processes, and in the spring semester, they audition a cast for their work.

Throughout the spring semester, student choreographers then teach their dancers their new pieces, while undergoing a stringent review process by an advisory committee of faculty and students. Students are encouraged throughout the process to step

upcoming productions “away from the mirror”, turning their focus away from the outward appearance of their work and the common ‘standards’ of dance, and instead onto the intrinsic values and resonances of their movement. The result is a beautiful exploration of what it means to be a dancer today, what it takes to bring new dance work to life, and what drives us to dance in the first place.

Wartburg Theatre The Carthage Theatre Department presents Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, with music and lyrics by David Yabez, and book by Jeffrey Lane. This hilarious and touching musical is directed by Herschel Kruger with music direction

by Jeremy Ryan Mossman. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this production is open to Carthage faculty, staff, and students only. Tickets are requied, and must be obtained in advance.

A musical adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s beloved film of the same name, Women on the Verge is a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa, whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980’s Madrid. Along with Pepa, there’s her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan; his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia; their son, Carlos; Pepa’s friend, Candela and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer; and a taxi driver who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion.

When Pepa’s friend Candela ends up quite literally “on the verge” and lives begin to unravel, the women must join together and work towards a future with -- or without -- the men who have both loved and plagued them. Mayhem and comic madness abound, balanced by the empathy and heart that are trademarks of Almodóvar’s work.

Carthage’s new play initiative is a newly commissioned work by Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award Winner Regina Taylor. The play focuses on the life of voting rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, from her beginnings in rural Mississippi to testifying before the Democratic Convention in 1964.
