Intermission

Nate Myers is a senior at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin with a double major in Music Composition and Music Theatre. Nate is a playwright, composer, and performer who has a very distinct love for cowboys. Nate has had a Staged Reading of his musical HELLO as well as a handful of zoom readings for his plays ANOTHER CHANCE and LAZY SACK OF SHIT. He has written a plethora of plays and musicals. As an actor, Nate was seen in the Carthage Mainstage productions of PUFFS (Wayne Hopkins) and EURYDICE (Big Stone).

Nate was also a part of the New Play Initiative project PATIENCE & FORTITUDE (Reg). Along with that Nate has performed in the Carthage Studio Theatre in SMOKEFALL (Footnote/Fetus 2/Samuel) and BODY AWARENESS (Jared). Other recent productions include RIDE THE CYCLONE (Ricky Potts), and DROWSY CHAPERONE (George).

Nate is beyond excited to welcome you to his recital.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work on. Nate would also like to thank the extremely talented band that agreed to work with him, Nicholas Dekker, Melissa Cardamone, Matthew Hougland, Mark Petering, and Greg Berg. Not only have all these people been so important to the product you see today, but they’ve also been amazing inspirations and resources in Nate’s time at Carthage. Another quick shout out to Nate’s family and friends who helped him become the person he is today. A final extra special thanks to Angel Palladini for being the best inspiration he could have ever asked for.

program Famous People Shit

Show Synopsis: Working Title is a show I started writing last year about two washedup songwriters. They’re hired together years removed from going their separate ways. Throughout their writing process, they recollect the fact that they have always had miserable timing. This musical is a story of lost love, found love, and a love for music. It also features two very lovable idiots writing music together and having a laugh.

Fake Sex: A Musical Farce is the first musical I wrote. It’s set in the nineties on a film set run by famous director Harrison Johnson, however, it’s actually just someone pretending to be famous director Harrison Johnson. He still manages to hire six of the best actors in America. Those actors are the handsome leading man, Ryan Ryan, the ex-wife whom Ryan cheated on sixteen times, Sandra Collins, her best friend and a new to the game actress, Maggie Sinclaire, an awkward lonely man that falls in love with Maggie and wants to be a leading man, Jimmy Jaszhanz, a hot-headed veteran who is very ‘secure’ in his sexuality, Bobby Stewart, and a lovable goof with a heart of gold, Daniel Morales. With this wacky cast of characters what won’t go wrong?

Hello is my favorite piece I’ve written. This show is the story of two people that go through the worst times of their lives and lose so much only to find out what that light at the end of the tunnel is.

Bobby goes through a four-year relationship ending right in front of his eyes no matter how hard he tried to keep it together, while Reese continuously gets disrespected and hurt to the point where she can’t even get out of bed. This is the story of finding exactly what you need at the perfect time.

program notes Famous People Shit from Working Title This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve written. Working Title is a musical I wrote consisting of two down-on-their-luck musical artists coming together after many years apart to write an album. This song parallels my writing process a lot and I think it has a lot of fun interlocking parts to listen to throughout. One of the struggles I had in writing this piece was that I didn’t realize how important the rock band arrangement was for it’s sound. Originally I wrote this in front of a piano and couldn’t figure out why the dots weren’t connecting.

When I figured out it needed a band it absolutely blossomed into the piece you hear today.

Leading Man’s Lament from Fake Sex: A Musical Farce Or as it was originally titled: A Waltz For Sixteen Lovers. This song is from a Farce I wrote about a 90’s film set. This song depicts a man who had cheated on his wife a plethora of times (most notably with actor Jack Nicholson). After coming on set and realizing his ex-wife is playing opposite him, Ryan Ryan sings this lament hoping, and praying to win back her favor.

A Million Oceans from Working Title This is one of the first songs I worked on with Dr. Petering. The lush calm piano moving repetitiously like a wave is one of the staples of this score. In WWorking Title, this song is played by one of the characters admitting that they have fallen in love with their writing partner.

Where Were You from Hello This song is another one that comes right off the page in performance. It depicts Bobby’s two best friends, Roger and Sam, trying to tell Bobby his relationship isn’t healthy. Roger and Sam use Bobby’s personal interests of Pro-Wrestling and Nascar to try and make it make sense. Personally, it was an absolute pleasure to get to write about one of my personal interests in Pro-Wrestling.

program notes Twenty Years From Now from Hello One of my more interesting pieces harmonically and rhythmically. I think that this song perfectly orchestrates the disarray Reese has in their mind at the time. Before this song, Reese encounters their childhood crush and they look to be smitten. Their crush flirts with them and very forwardly asks Reese out. Right after that, Reese notices a ring on the finger of their crush. This sends Reese into a catatonic state resulting in an episode involving a lot of peanut butter being consumed without a spoon, and a lot of beer.

Little Red Speed Machine from Hello This is the first song I wrote for Hello. It came to me in a dream, the story of someone who has recently been through a really tough breakup that tells the story to his friends through the metaphor of a NASCAR racer. That Nascar racer is Ol’ Buddy. Buddy loves his racecar more than anything, he calls her Little Red. Buddy loves racing but he doesn’t realize how bad he is at it. By the time Buddy gets good at racing, Little Red is ready to cash in. Buddy eventually lets Red go of the misery he puts her through.

Entrance to Space from Hello Bobby is an architect. All he wants out of life is stability. That manifests itself in the building he’s designing. After getting passed up on being the architect of a massive skyscraper, Bobby decides to keep designing his own anyway. This song is his anthem to figuring out what’s missing in his life.

Hello from Hello This is the concept that led to me writing this musical. Love at first sight is an idea that everyone has heard of. This song is my take on that. Bobby and Reese see each other across the way and are frozen in disbelief. The dialogue of this song is representative of their inner thoughts at the moment. It isn’t until after the song that they actually speak. This song depicts a very grey world gaining color for thefirst time. Even though this song is what the musical is based on, I didn’t write it until the last moment possible for my staged reading deadline and when it eventually came to me, it came in droves.
