music department chair Dear Prospective Students and Families, Welcome to Carthage College Music Department! We are glad to have you with us today and we hope you enjoy your visit to our campus, be that virtually or in person. Carthage Music Department is a unique place, and I hope to be able to share with you why.

First and foremost, this is a place in which we put student learning and student well-being in the center: You can be here whoever you are. We are an inclusive community in which everybody is invited and accepted.

Second, this is a place in which you can certainly thrive in music, be that playing the clarinet in one of the bands, playing double-bass in the orchestra, conducting a small instrumental ensemble, playing in the pep band for a game, or taking private lessons with any of our amazing faculty members: If you want to be busy in music making, Carthage is your place!

We have a spectacular group of 18 private lesson teachers who are devoted to their own performing art and who are also recognized pedagogues.

Carthage travels (we are top five in the Country for short term study abroad!), and the Music Department is a clear example of that: Pack your bags! Large ensembles (Carthage Wind Orchestra, Carthage Philharmonic, and Carthage Choir) take turns to tour internationally every J­term. As an example: • January of 2018: Carthage Choir toured Hungary, Slovenia, and Italy • January of 2019: Carthage Philharmonic toured Germany and Austria • January of 2020 : Carthage Wind Orchestra toured Japan • January 2021 (postponed to June 2021) : Carthage Choir will tour Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, pandemic conditions allowing In other years, ensembles tour regionally or nationally.

We have also developed a wonderful Carthage in Chicago Holiday Concert every December in the historical Orchestra Hall, inviting local high school ensembles to share the stage with us.

Carthage Christmas Festival (now happening for over 30 years) is the most important event in our year: three concerts with about 4,000 people in the audience. There is no way to describe this event, it is just incredible!

This is only a sample of who we are and what we do. I promise, there is much, much more!

I would like to encourage you to pay a visit to campus on a regular day of classes. I will be most happy to organize the entire day for you: From sitting in classes, taking a sample lesson with a private instructor, meeting with the Department Chair, meeting with an Admissions and Financial Aid Advisor, attending an ensemble rehearsal and more. This is a very valuable way for you to know us in real time!

Beyond the Classroom Carthage students have interned with local organizations such as the Racine Symphony Orchestra, the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and the Music Institute of Chicago. Students have participated in summer music programs such as the Oregon Bach Festival, the Rocky Ridge Summer Music Center, Toledo Opera, Chicago Summer Opera, and the Open Jar Institute in New York.

The Carthage Guest Artist Program lets Carthage students interact with world-class artists such as A Roomful of Teeth, Voces 8, Simply Three, Le vent du nord, New Century Saxophone Quartet, Fifth House Ensemble, Jorge Osorio, and Simone Dinnerstein.

Alumni Success Stories Carthage music education graduates are sought by school districts and, in recent years, have been offered teaching positions while still in their student teaching placements.

Graduates have been accepted at exceptional graduate programs for music performance and music education, including the San Francisco Conservatory, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Westminster Choir College, University of Kansas and Northwestern University.

As you arrive here today to audition for entrance into our music program, and scholarship consideration, you should know that AMAZING things happen here, and that we want you to be a part of something very special in the next four years.

There are many opportunities to continue to play in groups ranging from the Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Pep Band to the Concert Band, and Carthage Philharmonic. Our premiere instrumental ensemble, the Wind Orchestra, recently made their sixth trip Japan in January 2020.

In 2023-24 this group will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary Season—your Junior year. Regardless of the ensemble, you’ll find a sense of belonging and community that will support your musical aspirations and personal growth.

It’s been a tough year for everyone, and as you visit various colleges and universities to decide on your home for the next few years, you’ll often hear the terms like, “family,” “special,” and “unique,” but I can honestly say that the sense of family is what helped power Carthaginians through the pandemic. It has warmed my heart to see students and faculty pulling together, where true concern for each other has driven our interactions.

Rehearsals have always been special, but they’ve come to mean so much more for us.

Carthage has been my home for the last six years because of the personal relationships we cultivate, and it is why I still wake up every day looking forward to being on campus. I hope it helps you make the right decision (which, of course I believe is Carthage!). The givens about the Carthage music program are what you would expect: the absolutely gorgeous campus, the world-class orchestral and music education faculty that will take you under their wings, the proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, and the stellar education students receive here.

But here are the things that can’t be measured in numbers and metrics that drew me to Carthage and keep me here. As I mentioned above, the first is the type of people that you will find here. While you’re visiting, be sure to take the time to speak with the current students. You’ll quickly discover that they are incredibly engaged, kind, and interesting people. You’re most likely on campus because you’re interested in a liberal arts education that helps you develop into a well-rounded person, and you’ll see that in abundance on campus.

The second reason is that this is a truly special time for the orchestra and string music education program – the initiative to grow and develop the orchestra is coming to fruition as evidenced by the talent, the number of students, and the pride we have in what we do. Ask any student in the program; they want to be a member and have full ownership of their accomplishments. We are committed to a premier program on campus, but while never sacrificing the joy of music making and discovery.

Come sit in on a rehearsal and you’ll understand why I’m so proud to be a Carthaginian. We work hard and take what we do seriously, but always with a smile and an encouraging word. Whether music or music education is your major, minor, or simply something that you love to do, we have a place for you.

director of keyboard studies Welcome to Carthage College!

Now is an exciting time to join the keyboard studies program as we continue to expand the learning, performance, and career preparation opportunities available to our students. The core of our program goes beyond individual weekly lessons, offering a collaborative learning environment in which our students and faculty work together as a community to support one another and build up our skills. A couple of ways we do this formally as part of our regular schedule is through studio meetings, which allow students to explore and discuss various piano topics, and keyboard seminars, which give students the op- portunity to perform their current repertoire in a supportive environment and get constructive feedback from all our expert piano and organ faculty. We host world-renowned pianists for recitals and master classes, allowing students to play for these influential musicians and receive additional insight into their piano craft.

Carthage is becoming home to amazing piano activities that aren’t offered in any other community or college campus. Our keyboard program is growing at a tremendous rate, both in terms of our student body and the unique performances offered by our prestigious faculty. In 2017-18 Carthage was home to the Brahms Project, a series of 13 recitals if Brahms’ complete solo and chamber music for piano. The series featured Carthage’s own keyboard faculty and world-renown violinist Ilya Kaler.

In April 2018, Carthage hosted the opening night of a monumental concert, “Beethoven: 5 Concertos, 1 Pianist,” which featured Carthage music professor Wael Farouk (Director of Keyboard Studies) and the award-winning New Philharmonic Orchestra.

The ensemble performed all five Beethoven concertos in a single concert, three nights in a row. It is believed to be the first time this feat has been undertaken in the United States and internationally. Beginning in the 2019-20 season, Prof. Farouk is performing a three- year series of the complete solo piano works of Chopin, spread over nine recitals. In that same period, he will perform the complete piano chamber works of Beethoven with the Carthage Trio.

Our annual Lakeside Piano Festival features performances and master classes by guest artists, including internationally acclaimed pianist and Sony artist Simone Dinnerstein and international performers Car- men Vila and Jorge Federico Osorio. This year, the program welcomes Joanne Polk and the Estrella Pi- ano Duo. The festival also features a special showcase recital by select piano and organ students.

Our students have been accepted to prestigious graduate schools, often with generous scholarships, in- cluding the Manhattan School of Music, the Cincinnati Conservatory, the Chicago College of Perform- ing Arts at Roosevelt University, Mannes School of Music, Berklee College of Music, Northwestern University, and Rice Music School in Texas.
