Ethereal is a standalone electronic piece inspired by a conversation between Dr. Petering and I, where we discussed that music does not always have to be difficult but rather it can be natural and expressive. Abstract Feelings is a set of movements inspired by feelings that one has trouble expressing and or cannot quite put their finger on. It is written for flute, clarinet, piano, violin, and cello. The first movement is titled “Sanguine”, an adjective, “Optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation.” Sanguine, throughout the piece, alternates between 7⁄8 and 4/4 meter. The second movement is titled “Sonder”, noun, “The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it.” It starts as a waltz that develops as the piece goes on. The third movement is titled “Silience”, noun, “The kind of unnoticed excellence that carries on around you every day.” This song is all in 4/4 meter, but the feeling of the beat is displaced sometimes with some fun and tricky rhythms. Sax Quintet is a set of movements that contain elements of popular styles of music in the format of a saxophone quintet. This set of movements is written for the saxophone family from soprano to bass. This work was incredibly fun to write and work on as a learned saxophone player. Alien is a standalone electronic work written with spoken words jumbled into various patterns throughout the piece. This expanded my writing abilities beyond scores and into electronic music. Havin’ a Cup O’ Joe (HACOJ) is a standalone jazz combo piece inspired by Carthage alumni and wonderful saxophone player Joe Mihevc ‘22 and my personal love for coffee. The piece starts slow, as if one has not received their much-needed coffee, then goes into how much better that coffee can improve the day, similar to how Joe would improve everyone's day in daily rehearsals. Pickle Juice is a standalone jazz combo piece inspired by my girlfriend Sydney. One day when having trouble coming up with a title for an incomplete Jazz piece, I asked her what the title should be, and this was the answer... with no hesitation. So it held up!
