program notes and translations Death Came a Knockin’ (Travelin’ Shoes) You know that death came a-knockin’ on my mother’s* door singin’, “Come on mother, ain’t you ready to go? And my mother stooped down, buckled up her shoes, and she moved on down by the Jordan stream. And then she shout, “Hallelujah! Done, done my duty, got on my travelin’ shoes.” *sister’s, brother’s, neighbor’s, preacher’s Ruthie Cecelia Foster is an American singer-songwriter of blues and folkmusic. She released her arrangement of Death Came A-Knockin’ in 2002. She mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. She has often been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. Rardin’s choral adaptation is deliberately sparce – imitating guitar, light organ and banjo until the climactic ‘Hallelujah’. The list of characters –mother, sister, brother, neighbor, preacher, and finally self-remind us that we all face this journey, so we had best live right, and shout ‘Hallelujah’ when our turn comes.

To God alone be the glory. I ponder all this in my heart.

2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. The “Five Solas” are five Latin phrases that emerged over the course of that Reformation, and are (summary) principles of that history-defining movement. This piece seeks to evoke a bit of the ancient vibe associated with these phrases, integrating a recurring chant-like mantra throughout. At the same time, the piece seeks to capture a sense of modernity with the modern chord progressions and harmonic suspensions. In this way, the piece seeks to bridge the ancient and contemporary--and affirm the power of these timeless, credal beliefs.

Dolcissimo uscignolo Most sweet nightingale, you call on your beloved mate, singing: come, my soul. But song is of no avail to me and I have no wings to fly as you have. Happy little bird, kind nature rewards you will in your delight, and though she denied you knowledge, she you gave you good fortune.

Giovanni Battista Guarini One of the true giants of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period was Claudio Monteverdi. Equally comfortable with sacred and secular music, with his Vespers, opera, innumerable books of madrigals. His Dolcissimo uscignolo (1638) is a late work published in his final book of Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi (Madrigals of Love and War). The soprano writing captures the beauty of the nightingale that Claudio may have heard on his nightly walks. It is likely that he was unaware that the nightingale singing was the male trying to woo the female.

program notes and translations Few poems can match the austere desolation of Sehnsucht, a portrait of loneliness in which its subject, doubtless awake with his thoughts all night, looks out the window at dawn and cannot see the light for his tears. His bitter meditation on how his (likely Brahms’s) desire remained unsatisfied as life passes in solitude. He also uses nature as a corollary for human emotions, with the arpeggiated piano part displaying the running water. The composer’s memories of ‘times past’ moves darkly through the chromatic canon and its inversions and finally holding a full half-diminished triad for two measures on Sehnsucht (longing) before the resolution.

Bach (Again) Come sweet death Come, sweet death! Come soothing rest. Come and lead me homeward.

Using only the first eight measures of the chorale, the choir explores the singular beauty of singing each note in elongated fashion, then moving on to the next. This creates a rarified experience of improvisation using only the notes from the chorale.

Little Dance for Barbara Mason Pushing back the walls, stretching for freedom, time and space were the fringes of my limitation.

With only my skin for costume and no script at all I offer a careful bow to the beings beyond the dark. Perhaps this little dance will please the dead and the unseen.

And then the boundaries will cave in, and then my spirit will fly.

In this moment and no other, I am!

Richard Beale’s poem was written after he was watching a solo dancer in Montana. Maslanka has taken his classical and jazz ‘chops’ to another level with an incredibly sophisticated fugue between the vocal and instrumental lines, literally ‘pushing back the walls’. The frenetic nature of the cacophonous ‘IN THIS MOMENT AND NO OTHER, I AM’ explodes off the page to express completely the feeling the dancer, singer, or player must have when performing.

I’ll be on my way When I am gone, don’t you cry for me, don’t you pity my sorry soul. What pain there might have been will now be past and my spirit will be whole. I’ll be on my way, I’ll have left my feet of clay upon the ground, I will be glory bound I’ll be on my way.

When I am gone, please forgive the wrongs that I might have done to you, there’ll be no room for regrets up there, high above, way beyond the blue. I’ll be on my way, I’ll have laid my frown and all my burdens down, I’ll be puttin’ on my crown, I’ll be on my way.

When I am gone, don’t you look for me in the places I have been. I’ll be alive, but somewhere else, I’ll be on my way again! I’ll be on my way, I will lift my wings and soar into the air, there’ll be glory ev’rywhere on my way.

An inspirational memorial song that moves from a sense of sorrow into great joy. A slow opening, sung by a soloist, captures a feeling of reverence before a light, banjo-inspired piano accompaniment launches the spirit-freeing rest of the piece. The rising arpeggio motive on the chorus to the words “I’ll Be On My Way” fills both the singers and the audience with joy.
