translations Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffmann Lovely night, oh, night of love Smile upon our joys! Night much sweeter than the day Oh beautiful night of love! Time flies by, and carries away Our tender caresses for ever! Time flies far from this happy oasis And does not return Burning zephyrs Embrace us with your caresses! Burning zephyrs Give us your kisses! Your kisses! Your kisses! Ah! Lovely night, oh, night of love Smile upon our joys! Night much sweeter than the day Oh, beautiful night of love! Ah! Smile upon our joys! Night of love, oh, night of love! Vedrai Carino from Don Giovanni Come, shall I tell thee, How what befell thee, Soon can be cured By my potent charm? No garden grows it, Though it aboundeth, Like furnace glows it, Yet none ‘twill harm, All guard and cherish it: Gold cannot buy it, Say, wilt thou try it Soft ‘tis, and warm. Has thy wit flown, Hear, how it throbs within, lays his hand on her heart

translations ‘Tis all thine own, Ah, ‘tis thine only, O cessate di piagarmi from Il Pompeo No more torture, no tormenting (2) Oh, just let me die in peace. (2) You’re (so) ungrateful, no compassion Eyes too cold, too harsh, too wounding (2) More than ice or marble walls. Dolente Immagine Sorrowful image of my Phillip, why do you sit so desolate beside me? What more do you wish for? Streams of tears I poured on your ashes until now. Do you fear that, forgetful of sacred vows, that I might be lit by another flame? Shade of Phillip, do rest in peace; inextinguishable the ancient flame of love. La Pastorella I am the pretty shepherdess, Who comes down every morning, Offering a little basket Of fresh fruit and flowers. Those who come at first light Will find delightful roses And apples damp with dew, Come all to my garden. Those who lost their way In the horror of the night, Will find their path once more At my little cabin. Come, oh passing traveller, The shepherdess is here, Yet the flower of her thoughts She will give to one and one alone! Die Forelle In a clear little brook, There darted, about in happy haste, The moody trout Dashing everywhere like an arrow. I stood on the bank And watched, in sweet peace, The fish’s bath In the clear little brook. A fisherman with his gear Came to stand on the bank And watched with cold blood As the little fish weaved here and there. But as long as the water remains clear, I thought, no worry,

translations He’ll never catch the trout With his hook. But finally, for the thief, Time seemed to pass too slowly. He made the little brook murky, And before I thought it could be, So his line twitched. There thrashed the fish, And I, with raging blood, Gazed on the betrayed one. Sonntag Sunday For a whole week now I haven’t seen my love; I saw her on a Sunday, standing at her door: my loveliest girl, my loveliest sweet, would to God I were with her today! Yet I’ll still be able to laugh all week; I saw her on a Sunday, as she went to church: my loveliest girl, my loveliest sweet, would to God I were with her today! Dein Blaues Auge Your blue eyes keep so still That I can gaze upon their very depths. You ask me what I want to see? -I see my own well-being. A glowing pair burned me once; The after-effect still hurts. Yet your eyes are like the sea so clear, And like a lake, so cool Von Ewiger Liebe Dark, how dark in wood and field! Evening has already fallen, and now the world is silent. Nowhere is there light and nowhere is there smoke, Yes, and even the lark is now silent as well. Out of the village there comes a young lad, Taking his sweetheart home, He leads her past the willow bushes, Talking so much and about so many things:

translations “If you suffer disgrace and feel dejected, If others shame you about me, Then let our love be sundered as swiftly, As quickly as we were united before. It will go with the rain, it will go with the wind, As quickly as we were united before.” The maiden speaks, the maiden says: “Our love will not be sundered! Steel is strong, and iron is very strong; Our love is even stronger. Iron and steel can be reforged, [But] our love - who could alter it? Iron and steel can be melted down, [But] our love will exist forever!” Die Mainacht When the silver moon twinkles through the bushes, And dusts the grass with its sleepy light, And the nightingale pipes like a flute, I wander mournfully from bush to bush. I call you blessed then, fluting nightingale, For your beloved lives with you in one nest, And gives her singing spouse A thousand loving kisses. Surrounded with leaves, a pair of doves coos Their delight to me, but I turn away, Seeking darker shadows, And a solitary tear flows. O smiling image that, like the red light of morning, Shines through my soul, when will I find you on earth? And the solitary tear Trembles more warmly on my cheek. En prière If the voice of a child can reach You, O my Father, Listen to the prayer of Jesus, on his knees before You! If You have chosen me to teach your laws on earth, I will know how to serve You, noble King of kings, O Light! On my lips, Lord, place the salutary truth, In order that he who doubts should with humility revere You! Do not abandon me, give me the necessary gentleness, To ease suffering, to relieve sorrow, the misery!

translations Reveal Yourself to me, Lord, in whom I believe and hope: For You I wish to suffer and to die on the cross, at Calvary! Romance The vanishing and suffering soul, The sweet soul, the fragrant soul Of divine lilies that I have picked In the garden of your thoughts, Where, then, have the winds chased it, This charming soul of the lilies? Is there no longer a perfume that remains Of the celestial sweetness Of the days when you enveloped me In a supernatural haze, Made of hope, of faithful love, Of bliss and of peace? Nuit D’etoiles Night of stars, Beneath your veils, beneath your breeze and fragrance, Sad lyre That sighs, I dream of bygone loves. Serene melancholy Now blooms deep in my heart, And I hear the soul of my love Quiver in the dreaming woods. Night of stars Beneath your veils, beneath your breeze and fragrance, Sad lyre That sighs, I dream of bygone loves. Once more at our fountain I see Your eyes as blue as the sky; This rose is your breath And these stars are your eyes. Night of stars Beneath your veils, beneath your breeze and fragrance, Sad lyre That sighs, I dream of bygone loves.
