performer biography GREGORY BERG, Associate Professor of Music, just celebrated his 25th anniversary as a full-time faculty member. He teaches private voice, is piano accompanist for the Carthage Choir, and coordinator of Carthage’s Opera Workshop program. He has composed several original oneact operas for the workshop, including “Black September” (with Matt Boresi), “Birds of a Feather- a Magic Flute Sequel,” and “The New Impresario.” He has also composed three choral works that are published by Hal Leonard, and was commissioned to write a piece to celebrate the 50th Choral Festival for the Kenosha Unified School District. He also composed a choral/orchestral piece, “Most Alive,” for the gala opening for the new auditorium at Indian Trails High School. Berg has been the emcee and soloist with the Kenosha Pops Band for the past 27 years, and has also been a frequent soloist with both the Kenosha Symphony and Racine Symphony. He has served as conductor of the Sing Along Messiah at First United Methodist Church since 2005. He has written CD/DVD reviews for the Journal of Singing since 2001. Greg hosts a daily interview program, “The Morning Show,” on WGTD, the local NPR affiliate. He is also Minister of Music at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Racine.

a word of welcome Thank you for joining me for today’s recital – whether in person or on-line.

We are all hoping for the day when the COVID-19 pandemic will be a thing of the past and it will be able to share music and make music together without hesitation. In the meantime, I remain grateful for the gift of music and any opportunity – however strange – to enjoy that gift together.

This past February, I celebrated my 60th birthday. In honor of that personal milestone, I am celebrating several musicals that are also 60 years old.

Lerner and Loewe’s CAMELOT followed on the heels of My Fair Lady, Gigi, and Brigadoon. An adaption of T.H. White’s “The Once and Future King,” the show is a beautiful and poignant exploration of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Its original cast featured Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, Robert Goulet and Roddy McDowall. OLIVER! Is the handiwork of Lionel Bart, who wrote both the words and music for this adaption of Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist. Bart never came close to duplicating this success with his other shows: Blitz, Twang, and Lock Up Your Daughters. Nevertheless, Andrew Lloyd Webber was moved to call Lionel Bart “the father of the modern British musical.” THE FANTASTICKS,

It was a small cast and a modest production in which the sets and costumes cost less than 1,500 dollars, but that was part of what caused audiences to fall in love with the show. You are also going to hear a song from a largely-forgotten show from 1960 titled DO RE MI. Its musical score was by Jules Styne, who composed such shows as Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The lyrics were by the prolific team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who collaborated on Singing in the Rain, On the Town, Wonderful Town, Bells are Ringing, and the Will Rogers Follies, just to name a few.
