director’s note Thank you for attending the Department of Theatre’s 2021 student dance concert, Away From The Mirror. This production has become an important component to the dance minor program by providing a platform for our emerging dance artists to develop their inspirations into dances, share in the leadership and management of their own production, and engage in community discourse. The primary mission is to cultivate space for dance learning and dance sharing. With that goal in mind, we are presenting ten new dance works live and in-person on our beloved Wartburg stage!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our capacity for inviting a live audience is limited in number and to Carthage students, faculty, and staff only. We will be providing a pre-recorded streaming event later in the semester, so everyone who wishes to watch this performance may have access to do so. The dances you will see this evening have culminated from a series of three virtual showings throughout the current semester.

During each showing, all ten works were presented as drafts at different stages of development. Each choreographer was given feedback from the combined faculty and student Selection Committee as well as guest responder and musician, Andy Miller.

We are thrilled and grateful to bring these works out of the virtual space and onto the stage for tonight’s production. Following the Friday evening performance, we will host a post-show discussion. We hope you can join us. Please enjoy the show!

biographies Kristina Saldarelli (Artistic Director, Adjunct Dance Instructor) is a dance educator and choreographer from the Chicagoland area. She received her BA in Theatre Arts: Dance from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and her MA in Communication, Media, and Theatre from Northeastern Illinois University. She is pursuing her MFA in Dance at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee starting this summer. Kristina is an Adjunct Instructor of Dance at Carthage College where she teaches jazz and tap technique courses. She directs Carthage’s student choreographed concert AWAY FROM THE MIRROR (2016, 2018, 2020, 2021) and regularly choreographs for the annual fall dance concert. She is the choreographer for the 2021 spring musical, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. Kristina performed, toured, taught, and choreographed with JUMP RHYTHM® Jazz Project, a rhythm and energy-based performance company from 2005-2018. Her work has been adjudicated at American College Dance Festival, produced in professional concert venues, and ranked highly in national youth competitions. She was a Guest Adjunct Lecturer of Jump Rhythm® Technique at Northwestern University and as a freelance choreographer and teaching artist, she educates and mentors dance students throughout the Midwest.

Stacy Pottinger (Faculty Advisor) holds a B.F.A. in dance performance from Southern Methodist University, an M.A. in dance education from the State University of New York College at Brockport, and an M.F.A. in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Ms. Pottinger joined Carthage’s faculty as Director of the Dance Minor and Assistant Adjunct Professor of Theatre in 2009. She has instructed a number of the Dance Minor courses at Carthage College including Applied Dance Technique courses in Ballet, Jazz, and Modern as well as Dance Theory and Practices, Dance Theory and Composition, Dance Choreography and Repertory and Dance History.

She has mentored student choreography at Carthage for the past eleven years, led numerous trips to the American College Dance Festival conferences, and has served on multiple response panels, including that of Danceworks, Inc. Art to Art Series in Milwaukee, Faculty Feedback Panels for the American College Dance Festival North-Central Regional Conference Informal Concerts (2017 and 2014), and for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2015 spring dance concert. In addition to her titles as Director of the Dance Minor, Professor, and Artistic Director for Department of Theatre dance productions, Ms. Pottinger is Faculty Advisor for Carthage’s NDEO Student Chapter and National Honor Society for the Dance Arts (NHSDA). She is Treasurer for the Wisconsin Dance Council (WDC) and is serving her third year on the WDC Board of Directors.

Kim Instenes (Costume Design, Faculty Advisor) holds an MFA in Costume Design and Technology from Ohio University, and a BA in Theatre from UW-Whitewater.

Her faculty credits include UW Parkside, UW Whitewater, UW Milwaukee and Lawrence University. In addition to teaching at these schools she has designed costumes and makeup for a number of productions including Imaginary Invalid, Pride and Prejudice, Trojan War, Sweeney Todd and Translations. Kim continues to work as a freelance costume and make-up designer in the Milwaukee/Chicago area. Professional design credits include The Giver and Best Christmas Pageant Ever, as well as

biographies the musical Big at First Stage Milwaukee, Jeeves Intervenes and Heroes at Milwaukee Chamber, Romeo and Juliet at Milwaukee Shakespeare, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Renaissance Theatre Works, Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Racine Theatre Guild. Design work at Carthage includes, Up The Hill by Keith Huff, Spring Awakening, No Name and new play, by Laura Jacqmin, Ghost Bike, to name a few.

Ghost Bike won her a Certificate of Merit from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for costume and makeup design and an invitation to show her work at the Festival.

William Newcomb (Light Design, Faculty Advisor) holds a B.F.A. degree in Technical Theatre from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, Texas, and an M.F.A. degree in Arts Administration from Southern Utah University. He was assistant manager of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for two years before coming to Carthage in 2009.

Other credits include technical director of the Wells Fine Arts Center at Tarleton State University, assistant technical director at Oberlin College, scene shop foreman at Ohio Light Opera, and assistant production manager of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Will Newcomb teaches Play Production I: Stagecraft in addition to managing the scene shop.

Andy Miller (Guest Responder) is a percussionist, educator, dance musician, and composer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently the Music Director in the Dance Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he teaches courses in music, body percussion, sound design, and digital media in addition to creative work as a dance musician. His collaborations as a composer-performer with contemporary choreographers include Maria, by Angelica Angulo (New York City: Gibney Dance Center and the Judson Church), A dance for my daughter by Daniel Burkholder (Milwaukee: Winterdances 2018), Piece.piece by Johanna Meyer (Illinois: Krannert Center) and Fracture, by Angie Pittman, Angelica Angulo, Rhea Speights, and Johanna Meyer (Bucaramanga, Colombia: IX Festival Santander en Escena). His research on Afro-Colombian traditional music and pedagogy has been funded through a Fulbright Grant (2011-2012) and the Graduate Presser Award (2015). In addition, he was awarded a CLACS travel grant to Brazil in 2019 to study Candomblé drumming with master drummer Jorge Alabê. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Andy holds degrees in percussion performance from Wright State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a doctoral candidate at Indiana University. He also previously taught percussion at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music (Fall 2017), Indiana University (Associate Instructor 2014-2017), and Olivet Nazarene University (2012 – 2017).

Sarah Syverud (Concert Coordinator, Choreographer, Selection Committee) is a senior majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Dance and Spanish. This is her eighth Carthage dance show and third choreographic work to take the Carthage stage. Sarah’s piece is entitled “My Wish For You,” and it is a duet performed with her roommate and best friend, Bre. This piece is meant to celebrate their friendship and four years living together as they take the stage for the last time together before graduation. Dance has been a central part of their friendship and is something very

biographies special to both of them. Sarah is from Gurnee, IL and has been dancing for ten years.

She danced for Above the Barre Dance Company before her time at Carthage and spent many years competing in dance competitions. She is an active member and the former president of Carthage’s National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) chapter and spends her Saturdays teaching dance classes to students at her home studio.

Outside of dance, Sarah is on the executive board for Pi Theta sorority. Sarah would like to thank all of her incredible dance instructors she has worked with throughout the years and her time at Carthage for making her into the dancer and artist she is today. She would also like to thank her students for inspiring her as a choreographer and reminding her how lucky she is to have the best job ever!

Taylor May Bulanek (Choreographer) is a sophomore with a double major in Musical Theatre and Music Education Vocal with a Dance minor. Before Carthage, Taylor May has danced in many different genres for over fourteen years, has been in twenty six different musicals, and been on dance teams for Showcase Dance Studio, CTY Production Dance, and MVP in High School JV Poms. Outside of school, Taylor works as a freelancer teaching voice and dance over zoom, as well as voice acting for YouTube Story Time Animations and upcoming projects. Taylor May would like to thank all of her dancers, family, friends, and dance teachers for their support and encouragement, and making this dance a reality and giving her the opportunity to teach a wonderful group of people a dance that has been on her mind to create since high school.

Alecia Corey (Choreographer) is a junior majoring in music education with a minor in dance at Carthage. This is her 6th Carthage dance show, featuring two choreographed works for a total of 4 choreographic works . Alecia is from Illinois and has been dancing for close to 18 years with studio as well as competitive training. Outside of the dance minor she is involved with the Red Hots Dance team as well as Kappa Phi Eta Sorority. She wants to thank the dance program for allowing her these opportunities. They have helped her grow as a dancer and continually help advance her choreography. She will also like to thank her peers who inspire her to choreograph everyday. She is so thankful for this opportunity.

Jaime Erickson (Choreographer, Selection Committee) is a third year student at Carthage majoring in public relations and minoring in dance. This will be her sixth dance show at Carthage and her second time presenting her original choreography onstage. Jaime is from Germantown, WI, where she began dancing on a competitive team at the age of 10. In high school, she individually qualified for dance tours in New York City and Hollywood and her team qualified for a tour at Disney World.

Back then, she also participated in the high school band and show choir. Currently, she is a member of the Carthage Red Hots Dance Team as well as the Chi Omega Fraternity chapter on campus. Jaime is also involved in multiple honors societies at Carthage, including Alpha Lambda Delta, the first year honors society, and Lambda Pi Eta, the communication honors society. She is planning on graduating in spring 2021, an entire year earlier than projected, with a 4.0 GPA. Jaime would like to thank her family, friends, and peers in the dance program for always believing in her and shaping her into the dancer, choreographer, and person she is today! She is so thank-

Caitlyn Feldpausch (Choreographer) is from Kenosha, Wisconsin, and is a sophomore Physics major with minors in math and dance. She was a year-round active dance student at Kenosha Academy of Performing Arts. In her teen years she joined KAPA’s dance company which traveled to special events between Chicago and Milwaukee. Highlights included a Milwaukee Bucks pre-game show and participating in various dance conventions in Chicago. Professional performances and cast members’ pre-show dance workshops were also attended. She is appreciative of her professional dance instructors who choreographed pieces for the company for these events. This early journey of dance education at KAPA highlighted mentorship.

Now at Carthage, she appreciates dance professors who share their knowledge of dance, such as in dance theory. They instruct with an emphasis not only on dance technique, but the reasoning behind movements. She learns from peer feedback and reflection in courses. These aspects demonstrate how Carthage’s dance program carried out that ideal of mentorship, which Caitlyn is thankful for. This is her first choreographic piece for Carthage dance. She thanks attendees and crew for making this possible.

Caroline Huttner (Choreographer) is a freshman Elementary Education major with a Dance minor. She is from Orland Park, IL, and has been dancing at various studios since she was 4 years old. Caroline has spent many years competing with her studios’ companies. This is her second dance show at Carthage College and her first choreographic piece for a Carthage dance show. She hopes to teach dance to children one day. Outside of dance, Caroline is involved in Carthage’s National Dance Education Organization and in the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Caroline would like to thank her dancers for all their hard work and also her family and friends for endlessly supporting her.

Hannah Midlock (Choreographer) is a junior Athletic Training major with a pre-physician assistant concentration and a dance minor from Joliet, IL. Prior to Carthage, Hannah danced as a part of Vaughan Dance Academy since she was two and joined their competition dance team, Innovation Dance Company at the age of seven. Hannah also was a four year member of Minooka Community High School Varsity Dance Team. Outside of the dance minor, Hannah is a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority, Vice President of the Athletic Training Club, a Resident Assistant, and more.

This is Hannah’s third dance show participating in and first show choreographing.

Hannah would like to thank her family, friends, past dance teachers and especially her duet partner, Talia, for the unwavering support through her choreographing process and helping her vision come to life!

Geovanni Virella-Torres (Choreographer) is a junior Graphic Design major with a Dance minor at Carthage College. This is his sixth dance show at Carthage and his fourth choreographic work to be showcased in the Carthage dance shows. His previous works include one contemporary work and two modern works. He was

biographies awarded Outstanding Achievement in Dance Composition his freshman year for his contemporary piece Sole Conflict and was awarded Outstanding Dance Performance last year for his revamped version of Sole Conflict titled Dissonance. He is involved in Carthage’s National Dance Education Organization chapter. He is excited to present his fourth composition, Method. Geovanni would like to thank his Graphic Design professor, Laura Rodman Huaracha, for encouraging him throughout his design studies at Carthage and his dance professor, Stacy Pottinger, for presenting him with great opportunities and aiding in his career as a dancer and choreographer.

Emily Jean Zerger (Choreographer) is a fourth year student at Carthage majoring in Physics and Music Theatre, with minors in Dance and Spanish. This will be her sixth dance show at Carthage and her first time ever presenting a work of original choreography. She has also performed in the workshop productions of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING and SISTER ACT, and will be performing in the musical WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN later this semester. Emily Jean is also a member of the National Dance Education Organization, the music fraternity, Lambda Kappa, and she is the President of the theatre fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega. She is very thankful for everything her first dance teacher, Mary Katic, taught her as she grew up dancing at Mary’s School of Dance, for it gave her the foundational skills to become a choreographer. Emily Jean would also like to thank Stacy Pottinger and Kristina Saldarelli for their support in her creative and choreographic process to make this dance possible.

Jacqueline Chiakas (Selection Committee) is a transfer student from Oakton Community College in Des Plaines and Skokie, Illinois. She is currently a sophomore at Carthage majoring in psychology and minoring in dance. This will be Jackie’s first performance in the dance show here at Carthage and is hoping to bring her choreography to future showings. Prior to attending Carthage, Jackie was a choreographer/ dance teacher for Rolling Meadows Dance Company for three years and the Des Plaines School of Dance for a year. This is her seventeenth year in dance practice and education. Within those years she has studied a variety of styles, danced competitively, and was co-president of her highschool’s Orchesis team. Jackie would like to thank her family for their constant support in pursuing her passion for dance. She would also like to thank Kristina and Stacy for the opportunity to dance in the show and be a part of the Selection Committee to help form their vision for this semester’s show and can’t wait to perform in future shows.

Lexi Asare (Stage Manager) is a junior double major in History and Theatre. This is her stage management debut, though she has worked on many previous mainstage productions here at Carthage, including costume designing EURYDICE and assistant costume designing PUFFS. She is excited to be working on this concert and hopes you enjoy the show!

Gabrielle Tifft (Costume Coordinator) is a sophomore Technical-Direction Theatre Major, with two Minors in Costume Design and Dance. In her time at Carthage she has been involved in the mainstage productions of EURYDICE as the assistant light

biographies designer, ROMEO AND JULIET WALK INTO A BAR as the sound designer, PUFFS as a costume crew member, and THE HANDBOOK as the light board operator, as well as the studio production of SMOKEFALL and the J-Term production of SWEET CHARITY as the light designer. Gabrielle is a member of Alpha Psi Omega, Alpha Lambda Delta, and the National Dance Education Organization where she is also the NHSDA officer. She would like to thank her friends and family for all their support as well as Kim Instenes, Stacy Pottinger, and Kristina Saldarelli for this opportunity.

Sophie Michalski (Assistant Stage Manager) is a junior music theatre major and is so excited to be assistant stage managing a dance show for the second time! Sophie is from Brookfield, WI and has always been a huge appreciator of dance. She would like to congratulate all of the amazing choreographers who have put together these beautiful pieces and all of the amazing dancers who made the choreographers’ visions come to life. Enjoy the show!

Rose Reichert (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore theater major with a communications minor. Her main focus is being on the stage, but she also enjoys being a part of a stage crew. She is excited to be an assistant stage manager for the second time. She would like to thank her family, friends, and faculty for all of their support.

Hailey Williams (Percussionist) is a senior Studio Art major with a Music Performance minor. She is from Johnsburg, IL, and has been playing percussion for about 12 years now. This is her first time participating in a dance show at Carthage College.

Outside of her major/minor, Hailey is a member of Sigma Omega Sigma***, the Lambda Kappa academic music fraternity, and the Kappa Pi art honors society. She also works as an attendant at the H. F. Johnson Art Gallery on campus and is the current Percussion Tech for the music department.
