art department chair Welcome to the Carthage Department of Art! I am so glad that you’ve decided to participate in our annual competition for incoming students. This event is an opportunity for the faculty to meet you and get to know you as an artist. Meanwhile, please do make use of today’s visit to get all of your questions answered. We will be giving you a tour of the studios, you’ll meet some of our faculty, and you’ll see that the opportunities for our students to learn and develop as artists are among the finest in the region. Our committed professors are also practicing artists who will be at your side as you journey from beginning student to highly educated skilled practitioner. While you are here, don’t hesitate to ask about study abroad, internships, January field study courses, Carthage in Chicago, and other exciting possibilities in the field of art. Studio art majors may also add art education (K-12 certification) or graphic design to their majors. We work closely with Career Services so that you can explore career opportunities that match your interests and your gifts to the needs of the job market. Whether you are looking at a career in art therapy, biological illustration, design -- or even a career that isn’t directly related to art but that draws on your wellhoned creative skills – you will find that a liberal arts education with a major in studio art will serve you well. In the Carthage Department of Art, we believe that artists serve the community in important ways. Carthage offers majors and minors in studio art and art history, along with a major in art education. Artists quickly set up shop in the studio, forming a community focused on original and relevant work. The contemplative backdrop of Lake Michigan provides a rich palette for inspiration. Explore artistic media in small classes side-by-side with professional painters, sculptors, photographers, and art historians who teach from experience. See exhibits by top regional artists without leaving campus at the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art, and take advantage of the museum-rich Chicago-to-Milwaukee corridor. Carthage art students have gone on to graduate study at top institutions. They’ve earned competitive scholarships for master’s and doctoral study, leading them to positions as artists and lecturers at colleges and universities. Scholarships Carthage offers a number of competitive scholarships to prospective studio art, art history and art education majors. These scholarships are awarded based upon a cumulative review of a candidate’s application for admission to Carthage, in addition to a review of the applicant’s studio art portfolio or art history writing by members of the Art Department faculty.

Studio Art Follow your own interests while investigating meaning and developing keen critical ability. Courses cover drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, illustration, ceramics, sculpture, video and sound. Art History Place yourself at the heart of the liberal arts tradition while studying the great works of art from around the globe. Students will learn the important role the arts play in human society, nourish their love of art, and develop critical life skills in problem solving, aesthetics, visual literacy, and cultural sensitivity. Art Education The major in art with K-12 public school licensure prepares students for initial certification, leading to a Wisconsin license in art education. Develop the skills you need to be a practicing studio artist, as well as an effective teacher.
practice it. Internships Carthage students have a strong track record of obtaining positions in museums and galleries around the world. These internships immerse students in emerging practices and invite their contributions to major projects. Exhibitions Exhibit your work at the Campbell Student Union Art Gallery and the annual Juried Student Art Exhibition, as well as in the numerous local and regional galleries. Each year students participate in an exchange exhibition allowing them to exhibit their work at another college. In addition, students learn o curate and install work putting together an exhibition here at Carthage of student work from the other college. Travel Don’t just read about the masters; study their work up close, whether wandering the Louvre in Paris or the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain on a J-Term study tour. Or take a deeper look — art students have spent a semester in Morocco, Japan, New Zealand, and throughout Europe. Art Club Students of all majors and artistic abilities are welcome to collaborate, create, appreciate and learn about art in a relaxing environment. Kappa Pi Kappa Pi is an international honorary art fraternity. The Zeta Alpha Psi chapter at Carthage aims to spread art among the community, reaching beyond the campus.

h. f. johnson gallery of art The H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art gives Carthage students and faculty the opportunity to engage with current regional and national art trends, and the conceptual ideas that they represent. Directed by artist and educator Ryan Peter Miller, the gallery also extends exposure to these works of art to the community. With an exhibition space of more than 1,700 square feet, and exhibition catalogs with essays written by such prominent art critics as James Yood, Fred Camper, and Garret Holg, the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art is one of Kenosha’s best-kept secrets. The gallery provides generous exhibition opportunities for artists to share their work with a newly developed audience eager to experience how the world can be seen through viewpoints very different from their own. Through the H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art, students and members of the community find new meanings in places they may never have thought to look. upcoming exhibitions Two Men and a Truck Feb. 4-26, 2021 Opening Reception: Thursday, Feb. 4, 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets are required The gallery is open to Carthage students, faculty, and staff only. Yes, you read that correctly — this gallery exhibition title refers to the affinity that artists/makers Justin Shaw and Marco Rosichelli share with the afore-mentioned moving company, Two Men and a Truck. With their history of packing, loading, and moving, they are no strangers to the conveyance of valuable objects, except now they will be moving their own hand-crafted sculptural wares. What’s in the truck is to be determined, but it will be lovingly delivered, well crafted, and very important — to the makers, anyway. Grounded March 8 - April 9, 2021 Opening Reception: Thursday, March 11, 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets are required The gallery is open to Carthage students, faculty, and staff only. In “Grounded,” photographer Stephanie Burke presents a visual exploration of lost opportunities. Founded in Cahokia, Ill. in 1927, Parks College was a nexus of aviation development throughout the 20th century until the program moved across the Mississippi River to St. Louis in 1997. Ms. Burke’s images document the loss — and the unexpected growth — that resulted when the original campus was deserted and descended into ruin.
