w e l c o me f r o m t he d e a n Dear Friends of the Arts, The start of a new school year always shines with so much promise! We welcome new undergraduate and graduate students to campus to learn and grow. We marvel as they refine their artistic voices and express themselves in new and powerful ways.

The new academic year is also a new season of projects that showcase our students, our faculty, and amazing guest artists.

Our 2022-23 H. F. Johnson Gallery of Art season features modern art exhibitions of emerging and established artists across genres. Our annual Student Juried Show and May Art Walk highlight our exceptional student talents.

The Carthage Music Department showcases students in ensembles, musicals, operas, and chamber music. This year, we welcome a new director of choral activities and director of Carthage Choir, Dr. Maggie Burk. Dr. Burk will bring her special artistry to the annual Carthage Christmas Festival — a tradition that brings our community together to share in the wonder and mystery of that season. You won’t want to miss it!

Carthage Theatre will continue to challenge and delight with works like Antigone and Legally Blonde on our mainstage.

Our new play commission, Memento Mori, is a devised theatre project in partnership with a theatre in Ireland.

The Performing Arts Series enters its 26th year of bringing world-class guest artists to campus and into the community.

We’re excited to welcome the incomparable “New York Voices” to campus, along with chamber music “Ensamble 7/4,” and other guest artists.

Navigating life during a global pandemic has thrown us more than a few curves. One thing that has remained true is the power of the arts to bring people together, to challenge us, and allow us to escape from our troubles. In 2022-23 we look forward to coming together to enjoy live arts!

Whether it’s for one of our cherished traditions or a new exhibition or play, we hope you’ll make plans to attend our Carthage events — I promise the artistry will not disappoint!

Carthage invites the community to celebrate the holiday season at the 148th Christmas Festival.

This year’s event, themed “Share in the Wonder,” will feature performances by the Carthage Choir, Wind Orchestra, Philharmonic, Treble Choir, and Chorale, as well as the Lincoln Chamber Singers.

The festival concludes with the Service of Light and the singing of “Silent Night, Holy Night,” sending audience members forth with the joy and reverence of the season.

Wartburg Theatre | Tickets required Centering on the daughter of the great Odysseus, “Antigone” tells the story of family, the divine, and how far someone is willing to go to remain loyal. In this classic piece of Greek theatre, cast members have the opportunity to share the truth of a strong woman and a meaningful life.

Wartburg Theatre | Tickets required Nine years after taking its New Play Initiative overseas for the first time, Carthage is heading back to Ireland to develop “Memento Mori” in collaboration with the country’s newest theatre school: West End House School of Arts in Killarney. As the 14th production in the series, this fantastical story is woven from the collective mind of the ensemble and directors who grapple with life’s biggest questions: Why are we here? Why does that matter? And what comes next? Through the New Play Initiative, Carthage has commissioned top writers each year since 2009 to work with theatre students and faculty to produce original works. This year, each and every participant is a playwright.

Wartburg Theatre | Tickets required The annual fall dance production features new insights by Carthage dancers and choreographers, as well as traditional works that have been given new life. Echoing this year’s title, “In the Moment,” the performers strive through every step to be fully present. Choreographic voices include regional guest artists and faculty members.

Directed by Caitlin Preuss ‘23 Music and Lyrics by Adam Gwon Feb 2-4 | 7:30 p.m.

Studio Theatre | Tickets required Ordinary Days tells the story of four simple people living in NYC. Each character struggles with familiar aspects of their lives: school, love, the meaning of life, and growing up. Each one of them struggles to connect. The pieces of this story however, fit together in ways we never could imagine.

Ordinary Days addresses the ever-familiar question: “When on earth will all of this start to add up?”

By the end of this story, each audience member will be reminded of the ordinary moments in life and how every day can lead us closer to who we truly are.

Reading Carson McCullers’ book “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter” for a high school English assignment inspires Jo to write an autobiographical graphic novel, but an incident of gay bashing leaves her confidence shaken. This performance reminds audience members what it means to love art, yourself, and if you dig really deep … even high school.

Studio Theatre | Tickets required M and W are a young couple, and when they learn they are parents-to-be, their relationship is put to the ultimate test. Under such circumstances, the pair find themselves questioning their own capabilities to raise a child successfully. Not only that, but the world seems to be against them, potential dangers presented daily. Lungs tells the story of the gift of life, it’s beauty, and the fear of it, all at the same time.

away from the mirror

Wartburg Theatre | Tickets required Choreographed by Carthage dance minors, “Away from the Mirror” shifts the focus from the outward appearance of the students’ work to the intrinsic values and resonance of their movement. The result is a beautiful exploration of what it means to be a dancer today, what it takes to bring new dance work to life, and what drives artists to dance in the first place.

Wartburg Theatre | Tickets required After premiering on Broadway, this hilarious and heartwarming production won the 2011 Laurence Olivier Award for best musical. “Legally Blonde” follows Elle Woods as she fights through Harvard Law School, learning more than she thought possible. Brimming with energetic songs and full group dance numbers, it reminds audiences that every one of us is more than a pretty face.

Siebert Chapel | Tickets required This love-rock musical centers on Claude, the leader of a “tribe” of friends in New York City at the height of hippie culture and sexual revolution in the 1960s. Each character grapples with a question of self, leaving Claude to decide whether to resist the draft or fight in the Vietnam War. “Hair” features a Grammy-winning score, daring subject matter, and plenty of heart.

This exhibition features Anne Muntges, an artist and illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. Blending 2D and 3D space, she reenvisions environments through the mark of her pen, encasing objects and spaces through obsessive handmade lines, creating interactive black and white worlds.

This group exhibition features the best of the Midwest printmakers. As Midwest is best, so too is this display of relief prints, mono prints, intaglio, lithographs, silkscreens, and letterpress.

a place all one’s own

This exhibition features Christine Wuenschel, an artist based in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Using the human figure as a confrontational force, Wuenschel’s drawings emphasize the tensions within the cultural expectations around nudity, touch, pleasure, and comfort.

This exhibition features Ellie Richards, a furniture designer and sculptor based in Penland, North Carolina. Her work builds from the traditions of woodworking and the readymade to create connections between people and their sense of place.

For this annual concert, the Carthage Choir invites local high school musicians to perform a major choral symphonic work. The combined choirs rehearse and perform with the Carthage Philharmonic, providing an unforgettable experience.

Each year, the Music Department honors some of its best performers in the Honors Recital. Selected in a highly competitive audition process, Carthage students highlight their musical growth with performances in classical voice, music theatre, and instrumental music.

Recording the complete piano works of Amy Beach catapulted Polk into the public eye. For the centennial of Beach’s piano concerto, she premiered it in London with the English Chamber Orchestra and subsequently performed it with the Women’s Philharmonic in San Francisco.

As a featured vocalist in Yanni’s world tours, she has performed in China, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. On stage, Jelencovich has performed in “Die Zauberflöte,” “A Little Night Music,” and “Wish You Were Here.”

A. F. Siebert Chapel | Tickets required The Lakeside Piano Festival concludes with the EStrella Piano Duo: master soloists Elena Doubovitskaya and Svetlana Belsky. Besides the usual favorites, their repertoire includes many fascinating works that most duos fear to touch. Their concert programs are musically profound, virtuosic, acrobatic, and occasionally humorous.

Siebert Chapel | Tickets required Starting out as a group of seven childhood friends in the Venezuelan youth orchestra system, Ensamble 7/4 showcases the nation’s folk music throughout the world. The group won silver medals in the Best Band and Best Instrumentalist categories at the 2018 Global Music Awards for “Welcome to America,” the third of its four albums.

Closed holidays, winter break, spring break, and summer.

The box office is also open one hour prior to the event at the event location.

Ticket pricing and discounts vary and are not the same for each event. Possible ticket discounts are: seniors 55+, Carthage faculty/staff/students, university/college students, students 18 and younger, Carthage alumni, veterans, etc. Please inform the box office at the time of sale. Tickets are non-refundable once purchased. Charges and fees are non-refundable once processed.

ticket insurance

Consider purchasing ticket insurance to cover your complete transaction (not including fees) for $10 at the time of your original purchase. Ticket insurance enables you to receive a full refund for an event up to 24 hours prior to the performance start time for the tickets in that transaction. Without ticket insurance, all sales are final and no refunds are allowed. Tickets eligible for refund will be processed once the physical tickets are returned to the box office. Ticket insurance is not taxable.

Carthage accepts American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards, cash (please no bills larger than $20), as well as checks made out to “Carthage College.” All sales are final. No requests for cancellations or refunds are accepted unless you have ticket insurance.
