Not here. At Carthage, you will find we have a real claim to great—in our work ethic, our ideas, our accomplishments, and yes, our view. Located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, our backyard is the shoreline of great Lake Michigan. So whether you’re taking in a dorm room sunrise, attending class on the rocks, or just listening to the waves crash, you will understand why our students view college life a little differently.

a fresh look Even though we’re nestled in a setting that hasn’t changed much since the last ice age — and we have 167 years under our belt as an institution — our facilities and resources look sparkling new. That’s because they are. Our athletic and recreation center, student union, computer labs, audiovisual production suite, and numerous residence halls have all been constructed or newly renovated in the last 10 years. And our soon-to-be-finished science center caps it off.

For seven years running, our students have been selected to conduct research with NASA at the Johnson Space Center and other facilities — one of which soars about 35,000 feet off the ground. If you’re chosen to board its microgravity aircraft, you will hover, experiment, and take one giant leap toward a future in mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, or computer science.

You will do all three while shadowing real professionals in general care, pediatrics, radiology, nursing, physical therapy, pharmaceuticals, and orthopedics at Aurora Healthcare. This six-week insider’s look at the industry is vital to help future doctors, nurses, and all-around life savers choose the right path.

It doesn’t get much deeper than Plato, Shakespeare, and Aristotle.

Western Heritage is a series of seminar courses that will expose you to literature from the greatest thinkers, authors, artists, and leaders of all time. Not so you can “ooh” and “ahh” at their genius, but so you can build upon it. You will imagine what could be possible.

Learn to think independently. And discover what you’re capable of achieving through a combination of intense discussions and complex writing assignments.

Uncover A New Perspective.

Then Another. and another.

Sound exhausting? Good. Mastering the liberal arts should. Because at Carthage, you won’t just memorize facts and figures, you will become a lifelong learner. You will theorize solutions and critically analyze ideas across multiple subjects. Not so you can punch a clock, but so you can pioneer a movement, lead a team, think critically, and communicate your findings on the world stage (or in the case of our students, the national conference stage).

So when your brain starts to hurt, don’t worry — that just means you’re doing it right.

Start digging.

That cause you’re passionate about. That topic you can’t learn enough about. By senior year, it will be clear. And it will become the basis for your senior thesis. Carthage is one of the few schools in the nation to require a thesis, and it’s your chance to apply everything you’ve learned over the previous three years. It can take the form of a research project, art exhibit, music recital, portfolio, or better yet, something no one’s ever seen before — including you.

The N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center, better known as the TARC, is home to a 16-lane swimming pool, 200-meter indoor track, two racquetball courts, an indoor rock-climbing wall, and a 5,000-square-foot fitness center.

Show us what you’re made of.

Our varsity teams play in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin — regularly taking home hardware from one of the nation’s toughest Division III conferences. But you don’t have to be 6’6” or run the 40 in 4.3 seconds to stay competitive at Carthage. A third of our student body participates in intramural and club sports, and just about everybody gives their vocal cords a workout on game day.

Sure, Professor Yuri Maltsev has a Ph.D. in labor economics.

But that’s not why you’ll want to learn from him.

He’s lived at the epicenter of economic policy-making. Before defecting to the United States in 1989, he worked on Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s “perestroika” economic reform package. Later, he briefed U.S. Congress members on national security and foreign economic issues.

Millions have seen Prof. Maltsev on CNN, Fox News, or PBS. Carthage students do one better, traveling through southern Africa with him during J-Term to study developing economies and soak in the natural beauty.

Communicators shouldn’t fear science; they should embrace it.

Professor Laura Huaracha is adamant about that.

Having grown up surrounded by 10 acres of maple trees, she believes design can connect people to the beauty of nature.

An established photographer and graphic artist, Prof. Huaracha frequently team-teaches courses with science professors.

Graphic design and biology students alike learn to join forces.

Compelling visuals and text can educate the public about complex research topics better than mountains of data.

Whether snapping photos in Arizona or working with a client from the community, students praise her “ability to bring what we learn into the practical world.”

We take summer school to a whole new level.

You, your professor, and 10 weeks of one-on-one mentoring.

That’s what makes up the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). SURE pairs selected students with faculty members for paid summer research positions, including a research budget to help you get the job done right. It’s work that will not only pay, but pay off as well.

Under the guidance of Professor Kevin Crosby, space science students lose weight. All of it.

For seven straight years, the Carthage Microgravity Team has been selected to fly experiments in zero gravity conditions aboard NASA aircraft. The research is real, with the latest fuel gauging study holding long-term significance for the design of spacecraft and satellite systems.

Rather stay on the ground? Prof. Crosby also advises the RockSat team, which designs and builds flight experiments that are launched aboard a NASA sounding rocket, and leads research in computational physics.

what passion looks like. kimberly greene

Yes, her biography is correct. Professor Kimberly Greene earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Then how did she end up teaching art? Well, after 11 years at IBM and other firms in the computer industry left her unfulfilled, she “retired” and went back to school to pursue her passion.

Now she works to inflame that same passion in her students. She says creative ideas come easily to liberal arts students, because they’re always thinking in different ways.

Specializing in ceramics, Prof. Greene continues to be a prolific artist. A few times each year, her work is featured in exhibitions from Pennsylvania to Texas.

Our professors have credentials. In fact, 90 percent of them hold the highest degrees possible in their field. They have countless years of on-the-job experience. They have an average class size of just 17. And most importantly, they have passion. We can’t quantify it (our math professors have tried), but you will know it once you see it. Like when class ends and they refuse to leave until you get it. When their lunch break becomes your mock interview. Or when you skip class and find a concerned email waiting in your inbox. Passion is in their job description. It’s contagious.

And it’s why our professors will encourage you as often as they challenge you.

You will never look at january the same again.

One month. 31 days.

It doesn’t sound like much. But at Carthage, you will come to expect great things from January Term (better known as J-Term). It’s one page of the calendar devoted entirely to whatever you’re wild about. And it’s full of potential. So travel. Volunteer. Perform.

Inspire. And do something you may never do again.

January doesn’t get all the mileage.

Study abroad experiences can last for a semester or even a whole year. Hone your foreign language skills and change how you view the people, places, and issues of our world. When it’s all over, you will find that the experience never really ends.

Start your J-Term at the A-term (that’s airport terminal).

Study the effects of the Cuban embargo firsthand. Treat medical needs and address water quality in Nicaragua.

Observe the ecology of a Caribbean coral reef ecosystem. That’s what real-world learning means at Carthage. And every year during J-Term, you will have plenty of study abroad opportunities to travel, explore, and see what the real world is all about.

There are over 60 courses you can take during J-Term, and countless dreams worth pursuing.

Assemble a telescope from scratch. Stage an opera. Pursue acting in Hollywood. Build a house through Habitat for Humanity. Whatever you choose, don’t limit your imagination.

Carthage ranks sixth in the country among baccalaureate institutions for student participation in short-term study abroad.

the caf: Short for cafeteria, the Caf dishes out more than just tasty cuisine. Numerous charity fundraisers and roundtable discussions are held here. And to top things off, our outdoor patio serves up breathtaking views of Lake Michigan all day long. kissing rock: A campus landmark that’s hard to miss, Kissing Rock is exactly what it sounds like: a two-and-a-half-ton piece of stone that has seen countless lips locked, and that doubles as a canvas for artists looking to leave their mark.

the tarc: The N. E. Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center has 156,000 square feet of workout space and an equally large name.

So around campus, we just call it The TARC.

torchie:

The school’s mascot, Torchie, is literally our big man on campus. You will recognize him by his square jaw, massive muscles, and hair made of fire.

the stu: Considered by students to be our “campus living room,” the Student Union offers food, coffee, a theatre, a bookstore, foosball, pool, and a place to escape when your roommate’s band practice breaks into an encore.

You’ve got some big shoes to fill.

Before you can officially carry on the Carthage torch, you will need to learn how to talk like a real Carthaginian. Here are a few terms to get you started — the rest of your legacy is up to you.

Within 25 miles of Carthage, there are 27 art galleries, 12 museums, 9 theatres, and 1 awesome pier to explore. Our own Tarble Arena has hosted some big numbers as well. Fans of the Dave Matthews Band, the Script, the Fray, and Bob Dylan have all packed in to hear their favorite artists play. And if you’re willing to travel a little farther, nearby Milwaukee is home to Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival.

the bigger picture.

What’s big? Windsurfing the world’s fifth-largest lake is big.

Sharing your first kiss atop a 2,500-pound rock is big. A list of our 120 student organizations (and counting) is big. Searching for answers about the creation of our universe is definitely big. Although many of our students are Lutherans or Roman Catholics, you will find that we share and welcome opinions, experiences, and stories of faith from religions around the world. You can attend chapel on Wednesdays and Sundays, use Fridays for quiet reflection, and join several student groups to engage in small-group studies, dialogue, and personal support.

More than 90% of our students receive financial aid, a hefty chunk of which is scholarships and grants — including $1.25 million annually from the Presidential Scholarship Competition and numerous Merit Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to full tuition.
