by KATIE KA VANGTHEATERMU.ORG | MAR 29 - APR 16 A musical about what to do when sh*t gets real.
It’s been two years in the making, but finally an assassin, a Caribbean spy, a playwright and a Queen walk into a revolution and onto Park Square’s stage.
We are excited to welcome you to PRIME Productions and Park Square’s co-production of THE REVOLUTIONISTS by Lauren Gunderson. Set during the French Revolution, this play is both a true story and a dream fugue by a talented quartet, but most of all it’s a comedy in which cooler heads don’t always prevail, but instead roll.
We are grateful for Park Square Theater’s continued faith in us and this project as we waited for live theater to return, and for all of you who have joined us here tonight. Some stories are meant to be told from a stage to a live audience, and THE REVOLUTIONISTS is certainly one that genre.
Since its inception in 2016, PRIME’s mission has been to expand opportunities for the Twin Cities’ mature female artists to tell stories that portray women over 50 in a 3-dimensional way. We’re attracted to stories of strong women who are changing the world or changing themselves and others, while living in interesting times.
THE REVOLUTIONISTS accomplish this handily. This production allows PRIME to expand our mission by telling stories from diverse cultures and further the narrative that mature women are not only thought-provoking, they also can be bad-ass! We want 17-year-old boys to be in awe of their grandmothers; 30-year-old women to see 50 can be a new beginning, not a finale; and for women over 50 to be so proud of their age that when they look in the mirror they see their wisdom, not wrinkles. We constantly aim for the journey of mature female characters to appeal to both men and women.
Thank you, Park Square Theater, for this collaboration and the opportunity to share this historical, hilarious play with both our audiences.
So, sit back and enjoy as Marie Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, Olympe De Gouges and Marianne show the boys how revolutions are done!
- The Ladies of PRIME
Park Square Theatre celebrates our community’s many voices, inspires creativity across generations, and ignites our shared sense of belonging, exploration, generosity, and self-reflection.
Four women find themselves caught up in the French Revolution: an assassin, a spy, a playwright, and, of course, Marie Antoinette. They plot murder, find friendship (and do some good writing), in this irreverent, poignant, rebellious comedic romp that considers how we go about changing the world.
Lauren Gunderson has been one of the most produced playwrights in America since 2015, topping the list thrice including 2022/23. She is a two-time winner of the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award for I and You and The Book of Will, the winner of the Lanford Wilson Award and a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. She is a playwright, screenwriter, musical book writer and children’s author who lives in San Francisco. She graduated from NYU Tisch as a Reynolds Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship. When I first read The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson, I thought, “wow” this is a play I have to direct. I love period pieces (plays, novels, cable series) that are rooted in history, with notable people of the era, but whose story and dialogue is accessible. This play is all that and more. The combination of 18th century pathos and 21st century dialogue is something new and refreshing. This comedy is about “real women, real transcripts and real executions”. These women are fighting for their rights, their souls, and their survival. Any woman who has marched in a rally for their own rights owes a debt of gratitude to brave women in history. Written by a millennial, it is smart, snappy, witty, and wise, with morsels of real history spread throughout. It’s a wild ride, so buckle up, keep your ears and eyes open and enjoy the experience!

MARIANNE ANGELLE is an invented amalgamation of historical figures. The historical Olympe De Gouges would not have known any San Dominguean / Haitian freedom fighters so she invents one. Thankfully we are starting to have much more scholarship on the critical and inspiring role Black women played in the Haitian Revolution. When writing Marianne’s character, playwright Lauren Gunderson “looked mostly to the little we know about Suzanne Simone Baptiste Louverture, wife of Toussaint Louverture.”2

Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d'Armont (1768 –1793), known as CHARLOTTE CORDAY, was a figure of the French Revolution. In 1793, she was executed by guillotine for the assassination of Jacobin leader Jean-Paul Marat, had played a substantial role in the political purge of the Girondins, with whom Corday sympathized. In 1847, writer Alphonse de Lamartine gave Corday the posthumous nickname l'ange de l'assassinat (the Angel of Assassination).3

MARIE-ANTOINETTE, (1755 – 1793), was Austrian queen consort of King Louis XVI of France. Her name is associated with the decline of the French monarchy. Her rejection of reform provoked unrest, and her policy of court resistance to the progress of the French Revolution finally led to the overthrow of the monarchy in August 1792.4

Now that we’ve got your attention with The Revolutionists, we’d love to see you back as part of the PRIME family as we craft nuanced perceptions of mature women and make sure that it not only includes, but fully embraces and celebrates all cultures of womanhood.
Here are some of our upcoming plans:
PRIME Productions plans to continue with PRIME Voices: A Staged Reading series that focuses on stories about mature women. The series includes three play readings presented in three consecutive months at 3 separate venues, each for one night only and offered for free! These plays allow us to employ a myriad of Twin Cities’ valuable female theater artists and explore new, as well as classic plays, shedding light on different nuanced versions of mature womanhood.
Emerging from its “online” reading in the 2021 PRIME Voices Series, PRIME is now working in tandem with the Playwrights Center to develop Abuelita by Nathan Yungerberg. Set in Spanish Harlem in the 1990s during a historic heatwave, the play includes four fabulous roles for mature women and the “coming of age” of two mixedrace teens.
And last but not least, PRIME is now on a national search to commission a playwright to develop a play based on the struggles of mothers and grandmothers in the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. We can’t wait to discover what a new voice at PRIME could craft to represent richer, deeper stories about mature women and their worlds.
Thanks to all of the people who’ve helped us to sustain and grow PRIME.

Thank you and enjoy The Revolutionists!
Humorist Mark Twain once remarked that “Naked people have little or no influence on society,” which is how he came up with his oft repeated line: “Clothes make the (wo)man.” The four women in The Revolutionists are undeniably intent on influencing their French society, which is why what they wear on stage sends an important message to the audience about who they are and what they stand for.
It’s the costume designer, along with the wig designer, who is charged with creating this nonverbal communication that complements the actors’ words and actions.
The designer’s job starts with conversations with the director to get a sense of what they want to say about the play, including “their slant, their sense of aesthetics, colors, character analysis…,” says Sonya Berlovitz, who has designed the costumes for more than 50 productions during her career, starting with plays and operas for the former Theatre de la Jeune Lune.
Once the two are on the same script, Sonya refers to her research on the period and the characters, who in this case are based on actual people. The play’s four main characters have varying economic levels, she says, and color is one way to suggest “a mood that’s symbolic of a quality” they possess. For instance, red, white, and blue are prominent to signify the French Revolution and are referenced in the costumes of Charlotte Corday and Marianne Angelle, while Marie Antoinette is elegantly dressed in pink and apricot, and Olympe de Gouges wears a green leather jacket and a vest with the wording of the playwright’s Declaration of the Rights of Women written on it.
Hairstyles, hats and headwraps also offer a window into who a character is.
“Audience members may not say, ‘You know, that wig made the show,’” says Bee Tremmel, who is designing three wigs for the production (Marianne is wearing a head wrap with wisps of hair sewn in). But if the wig doesn’t fit the head or the character, it can be a disconnect that audiences sense but may not always be able to put their finger on.
Costumes need to fit just right, so the actor is free to strut and fret onstage unencumbered, just as wigs have to be balanced so they’re not too heavy, too hot or too wonky. Which is why Marie Antoinette won’t be wearing the sky-high updo that turns up in her Google searches.
Period pieces often incorporate a nod to the present taste in fashion, both designers say, because what was deemed attractive in the 1700s, or even early 2000s, isn’t always seen as flattering to a modern audience.
Bee, who is a performer as well as a hairstylist/wig designer, started with human hair wigs which were hand colored and cut. They then worked from a detailed sketch Sonya provided of the characters’ costumes. “My boss is always the costume designer,” Bee says.
Wigs and costumes for the understudy also are on the designers’ to-do list. “It’s a nice perk when the actor and understudy are close to the same size,” Sonya says. For Bee, the texture and length of both the actor’s and understudy’s hair have to be taken into consideration, as well as facial structure. For instance, Bee explains, they once designed a wig with a chin-length bob, only to discover that the actor and the understudy had different chin lengths.
Wigs are an affordable luxury, Bee points out. A good wig ensures a consistent look night after night, but also saves the actor’s own hair, plus time sitting in the makeup chair before each production.
Wigs and costumes aren’t only for the audience’s experience, Bee and Sonya agree. Donning the costume and the wig completes the transformation in their minds from an actor in 2023 to queen, spy, assassin, and playwright from several lifetimes ago.
