Message from the Director Let’s celebrate Carson City! This November marks the 25th anniversary of the Quality-of-Life (QOL) Initiative (Question 18). In 1996, Carson City voters overwhelmingly approved a ¼ of 1% sales tax dedicated to parks, trails, and open space. The only fund of its kind in Nevada, QOL revenue is dedicated to: • 40% for open space acquisitions and management • 40% for development of parks, recreation facilities, and trails • 20% for park maintenance and operations; Boys and Girls Club Through the support and generosity of voters, Carson City has built the Robert “Bob” Crowell Multipurpose Athletic Center (MAC); made improvements to Mills Park (Carson Aquatic Facility, Bob Boldrick Theater, Wungnema House), Rifle and Pistol Range, JohnD. Winters Centennial Park, and Fuji Park, just to name a few. Thousands of acres of open space with important natural resources, sensitive wildlife habitat, scenic viewsheds, and trails have been preserved for future generations. In honor of QOL, we hope you will join us in a month-long celebration this November. Check inside this guide for a variety of activities highlighting projects specifically funded by QOL. As Mayor Bob Crowell would say, “thank you for making Carson City the best place to live, work and PLAY!”

ASTRO-PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP This is a one night workshop designed to enjoy the evening, look at the stars, and learn how to shoot astrophotography (the Milky Way) The workshop will start by enjoying the sunset and figuring out your composition while there is still some light out. Then we’ll wait for it to get dark enough to shoot the Milky Way. Bring a DSLR camera, a tripod, and snacks. Not all cameras are created equal. In order to get the best possible shot, lenses that are wide angle and a wider aperture setting work best. Transportation provided. Location will depend on smoke and forest service closures.
