‘The Times They Are a Changin’ It is not by chance that I begin our brief conversation with a line form a Bob Dylan song, because just last week my wife and I journeyed to Liverpool to a concert by the ‘great man’ himself.
It took me back to the days of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and ‘Seventies’.How many of us can still remember ‘long hair’, ‘flower power’, ‘bell bottom jeans’ and ‘protest marches for CND or ‘anti Vietnam’? Sadly, in my opinion, Bob Dylan did little to resurrect treasured memories and I mourned the absence of members of ‘The Band’, his legendary backing group, some of whom have tragically passed away. As we trudged our weary way home, I began to reflect on the many changes which have occurred since then. As a child, I can remember being tucked into bed under wyncyette sheets, especially in winter, as our bedroom was absolutely freezing cold – central heating did not exist. If mum was in a good mood , all was fine with gentle hands. On the other hand, I was often entombed in bed where I could move only my eyes, so tight was the binding. Nowadays we have duvets, or ‘continental’ quilts. Why continental? The bed wasn’t that big! My sisters worked in local weaving sheds and sometimes a bale of Lancashire cotton sheets would appear- sadly replaced by goods from Egypt and even further afield. On other occasions, mum would be frustrated by blunt kitchen knives or scissors. Miraculously, there would be a knock at the door, and there would stand Mr. Gibbs, dressed in a khaki bib and brace, standing in front of a strange contraption, a huge circular stone driven by a pulley and wheel, joined by a thick leather belt. For a shilling (5p), Mr Gibbs took the knives, pedalled his wheel furiously, and sparks would fly until the knives and scissors were sharp. I can never remember goggles or Health and Safety rules. Now and then, we could hear the clop of a horse and cart passing down the street. A call of ‘Rag and Bone – Donkey Stone’ would reverberate down the street, at which my mother would quickly gather up all the worn out clothes, bedding, curtains etc which she would then exchange for ‘donkey stones’, a type of grey coloured stone which turned white when applied with water to the door step. Nowadays, we send such things to a charity shop or waste depot, but somehow hat loss of contact means

yet another link to people has been lost, as society becomes more sterile. The ‘community’ has suffered most by the absence of the ubiquitous, almost omniscient milkman. This person seemed to be an Ambassador for the United Nations at times. He knew every person in the neighbourhood, warts and all, and often became a medium of social needs. ‘ Old Mrs P down the road has had a fall, and cannot get out – complains that no one visits’ so off I was sent to do her shopping and later on my mother, or another neighbour, would call in to do her housework. Recently I had to go to London, and I realised just how much society has changed. My son Francis lives and works in London, and we were travelling on the ‘Tube’. The scene resembled something from a horror story. The silence was deafening. Each and every passenger in the carriage appeared to be suffering from a collective hypnosis, mesmerised by a small machine at which hands and thumbs tapped furiously. No one spoke – or even glanced at their neighbour. They were transfixed – so sad ... Finally, and things really have changed in this area, I visited my ‘alma mater’ , aka Thornleigh Salesian College, quite recently, and shudders ran down my spine. Those of us ‘fortunate’ enough to have passed our ‘11 plus’ exams were packed off to Grammar Schools to be ‘educated’ or, in my case, have education beaten into you. We were punished endlessly and, quite often, mercilessly. Our Maths teacher used a T Square across our thighs – our Latin Master hit us with a bone backed hair brush named ‘Pafanucis’ – our French teacher used to lift up the wooden lid on our individual desk and bang it on our heads. ‘ Murphy-you’re like a fish on a marble slab- your mouth is always open’ or ‘All you are good for is picking up orange peel in the park !’. I think they called it motivation.
Some things needed to change but sadly it appears that the past becomes rosier and the future looks more bleak. Happy Days!

Give your plants some support
Some plants will give you beautiful flowers in a border or pot, but need some form of support or they will flop over or break in a strong wind. Which Plants need support? Tall plants, those with soft stems or very full flowers. This could include: Peonies Delphiniums Some Phlox Tall Campanulas Hesperis matronalis Globe Thistle Put in your supports during April and early May before the plants are fully grown, so they will grow through the supports.
Types of support Rather than putting in sticks/canes and tying plant stems to them you should

put in a supporting structure (scaffolding) around the plant that the stems can grow through and flower above. If you put your supports in place in April you should not be able to see them by June.
What type of support to use? Natural materials These blend well with the surrounding plants. They should be installed at about half the eventual height of the plant. This way they can support the plant, but be covered up by leaves. Willow and young tree stems – use pencil thick freshly cut stems which you can bend into shape over the plant or create a taller support. Tie in with garden string. Make sure that the part of the stem that
is underground is stripped of bark or it will root and grow! Bamboo and string – cut the bamboo canes to size and place several around the plant, then tie the string around the bamboo uprights to create a firm structure. Metal These supports are expensive to buy but can last many years; some are covered in plastic to prevent rust. Take the supports out of the ground in the autumn and store in a dry place over winter to re-use in the spring. P.S. I find that plastic supports are often ineffective as they don’t provide a strong enough structure. - Sue

Chipping Pale
Distance: 8 miles. Grade: Moderate Leaving the car park turn left and at the fork take the road to the right into The Grove and pass the old Berry’s Chair works. Go over the bridge and pass Kirk Mill on your left. Half way along the mill pond crosses a stile on your right and walk up the hill with the hedge on your right, to cross a stile. From the stile walk across the field bearing left to the edge of the bank of Dobson’s Brook. Along here you can make out the line of the pale. Pass through a gate and walk down through the trees to cross a foot bridge. Turn right up the hill towards Windy Hill at the top. Go through the gate next to the house, turn right and cross the yard diagonally to walk up the right hand side of the barn conversion. Go through the gate onto a track. The track soon peters out but stay with the fence on your right until you meet a way mark that sends you to the left crossing a field to join the Burnslack Road. Go over a stile and immediately turn right to follow another track through a gate. Continue along this track to another gate (leading onto Stanley), cross the stream using the stepping stones, turn right and go up the bank, at the top turn right and walk toward the gate leading from Stanley to Park Gate. Go through the gate and keep the stream on your right walk down the hill, cross the stile leading onto the road. Turn left and walk past Park Gate farm house using a side path to the right. Back on track turn left and continue along the track towards Park Style. At Park Style keep on the track towards Lickhurst Farm.

13k Time: 3 - 4 hours Map the Forest of Bowland Follow the right of way through the middle of the two farms out on to the track which leads to Knott Hill and its restored lime Kiln. Continue along the farm road to reach a main road, near to the old Leagram Smithy. Cross the road to a stile and then follow the fence on your right, here again we are following the line of the Pale. Keeping the hedge to your right continue along until you reach a stile to take you out onto a main road. Turn right. Follow the road for a short distance until you reach the road end for Greenlands Farm. At Greenlands Farm walk in front of the house and turn left between the house and barn. At the end of the barn turn right and follow the footpath to the Gibbon Bridge Hotel. Go through the gate, at the side of the River Loud, cross the road and go through the entrance of the hotel. Pass in front of the main reception area and turn left just before the next building to walk at the back of the hotel service area. Turn right and walk towards a small gate. Here once again we follow the line of the Pale. Keeping the hedge on your right continue along this route towards Pale Barn. At the edge of the hedge line go over a stile and through the lovely gardens of Pale Barn, out onto the road turn left towards Pale Farm. Follow sign posts to lead you around the left hand side of the house. Over a stile and keeping Chipping Brook to your left follow the hedge on your right , go over a stile and bearing right follow the hedge crossing three stiles walking back towards Chipping. After the third stile walk diagonally across the field towards the newly built Cricket Pavilion. Cross the bridge and turn right to walk up Longridge Road taking you to the village centre.
