START: CHORLEY RAIL STATION PR7 1BS - FINISH: DARWEN TOWN CENTRE BB3 0DE FACT FILE: DISTANCE 10 MILES (16K) - TIME: 4-6 HOURS GRADE: STRENUOUS Directions
Immediately outside the station take the underpass leading to Steeley Lane. At the junction with East Way turn right and then left onto Lyons Lane. In 300yds turn right onto the B6228 Eaves Lane towards Rivington. At the corner of the Shepherds Arms pub turn left into Crosse Hall Lane. Keep right on Crosse Hall Lane where the road divides at Haworth Road. The lane continues crossing the canal and then the motorway and then climbs to waterworks and then White House farm on top of the ridge extending from Healey Nab. Keep ahead on a track passing to the left of the farm and as this turns left continue to a stile leading into fields. Cross to another stile and then bear left following an intermittent hedge to its end. Here turn right without a clear path to help you and aim to the far side of the broad field avoiding a marshy area to the left. Just beyond an old wall cross a stile leading into patchy woodland. Keep on this as it crosses open ground to bring you to a track by Nab Hill Memorial Forest. Cross the track to a stile leading into pastures and bearing left continue the descent to a corner and stile above woods. Cross to descend steeply to Higher Moor Lane and the northern end of Anglezarke Reservoir. Cross the causeway and after passing mock Tudor Waterman’s Cottage turn
September PV 2016.indd 8
left onto a broad path just as the lane begins to climb. Keep on this for a mile to reach a bridge on the left which gives access to White Coppice. The next section of the walk is all about Great Hill - going up it and going down it Keep ahead as the track starts to climb to reach a distinctive sign post (placed by the Ramber’s Association) and here turn sharp right. At another R.A. sign turn right on a broad track leading through the ruin of Drinkwaters. Continue along a walled section and then where the track divides branch left cross a stile and climb the final slope to the broad summit plateau. There is no trig. Point to mark the top but there is a fine summit shelter. The next section of the walk requires you to be expert in the ancient art of “bog trotting” as you traverse the moors to reach the A675 Belmont Road. Keep ahead on the main track and after it starts its descent bear left on an obvious peaty path taking you to another ruined farm. Just after the last tree the path crosses moorland and then a stream to reach a fence. This now becomes the guide to reach the road. Turn left and follow the fence as it swings round to bring you to the A675. Turn left and then after 100yards turn right onto a path leading into Roddlesworth Woods. At
first the path is little improvement on the boggy moorland path you have just left but after 700yds it intercepts the main route through the woods. Turn left and then after passing a substantial bridge to the left keep on the main track just past redundant gateposts. Here turn right on a track leading up to Tockholes Road. Cross the road with a bus stop to the left and bear right on a drive leading past the end of a terrace and then out onto open pastures. After passing through trees bear left and then cross a stile on the right, on a path taking you to the top of Darwen Moor. Follow the path along the escarpment until you arrive at the Tower. Darwen centre is down to the right. From the tower follow the main track for 100yds and then where it divides branch right. As this track turns right near a bench keep ahead on a narrow path to descend to a farm. Take the path to the right of the farm to continue downhill to the next farm. Through a gate join the drive which leads to Granville Road turn right and then left on Manor Road and then cross to an entrance of Bold Venture Park. Turn left and follow paths leading to the war memorial. Exit the park and bear left to Belgrave Road which will take you to the town centre.

T
he Times they are ... I stared this saga back in 1978 when my family first moved into Penwortham and now, on the day of GCSE results, perhaps it is time to think of the phenomenal amount of change which has taken place – some of it good and some not so good. You see, as I walk up the main road in Penwortham, the first thing I notice is the lack of a bank. My own bank closed its doors at the end of July – ‘It’s all because of the internet’ they claim. My reply is simple- ‘What happens to the many people- possibly elder- who do not have a computer?’ I remember my son Francis starting school in 1978. Life was relatively simple. He was taught his 3rs- (R)eading, (W)riting and (A) rithmetic, just like I was, and possibly many of our readers. He was also taught respect for his peers, his teachers, and people in authority. I remember also, as a teenager at the ‘Grammar School’, that if I misbehaved in school, I was immediately punished, sometimes justifiably but often as a member of a general sweep across the whole class. That punishment could be the cane, the strap, a clip around the ear, or even a smack across the top of tour leg with a T-Square. ‘Gentle ‘ days, were they not! More importantly, I did not tell my father, for fear of being punished even more! The local policeman was a figure of immense respect! Policemen ruled ok! Again, their word was the law, without question. Again we, as children, followed their instructions without question. It was even more important if, like me, you attended the ’Grammar School’. I can remember to this day that on one occasion, and I stress the word one, I was caught by the police breaking windows in a derelict mill. Having been soundly told off by the local bobby, I was at home when there was a loud knock at the door. PC Jones asked to see my father, and told him of my misdeeds. ‘You would expect better of a Grammar School boy’ were his parting words. My father’s words were much more significant – ‘Everybody in our street will know that the police have been here. What are you going to do about it?’ As a Catholic child, life did not get any better. I can remember to this day Sister Mary taking a register on Monday morning, asking who had been to church and communion on Sunday. If there was the slightest doubt about your attendance, you were asked to tell the story of the Gospel on that particular day. But life was not all bad. As a
September PV 2016.indd 10
child in the reception years, I was taken to school by my older sisters- it was a 3-16 school. In the afternoon, we were allowed to sleep, having first received our daily bottle of milk and a bottle of orange juice! Sadly , all of this changed as all schools became, in my opinion, contestants in a race to gain first place in the league tables for exam results. Even my own children became victims, as the drive to achieve Level 5 or 6 became even more intense. As well as this, people changed and suddenly we began to live to work rather than work to live. Again, in 1964, all this changed as I entered the world of work. I went to train as a Stockbroker but, after two years, I chose a different career and went to train as a teacher. In 1969, I took my first steps into teaching in what are euphemistically termed as ‘challenging’ schools, finishing up in Skelmersdale. To return to life changes, during my teaching career in Kirkby, we took 60 hand picked boys on holiday to Lloret De Mar in Spain. I can only describe it in biblical terms, as a plague of locusts . If it moved , it was ‘borrowed’. After ten days, the staff grew desperate and decided to hold an amnesty. On each level of our hotel, we placed a very large bag with instructions to place any ‘borrowed’ items therein. I do not lie when I tell you that placed on top of one bag was a thirty inch statue of Our Lady because, as the boy involved said, ‘My mother prays to her a lot’. The rush for qualifications is a major event which has affected all of our lives. As a school leaver in 1964, there seemed to be a large choice of jobs. In the Grammar School, careers advice was either Law or Medicine or Teaching. Engineering, or a trade, was only for the less gifted amongst us. So sad it is appalling! Yet somehow we seemed to survive. Now it seems that everyone has to attend University, or at least stay at school until they are eighteen. I remember one particular GCSE results day when Wayne did not do well at all. In his desperation, he borrowed his friend’s results, changed the name and took his piece of paper home. In primary schools, we are now challenged by the ‘School Prom’, whereby our eleven year olds are ‘compelled’ to copy their peers from across the pond to dress up in their fineries. Not sure if this really is a change for the better. To return to my opening statement, all
children, even at very early ages, seem quite happy to deal with new technologies. When I tell my grandchildren that birds ‘twitter’, I can see the smirks on their faces. Yet again , is the cost too high? We hear of dreadful incidents of bullying on Facebook or other means of Social Media. What happened to speaking to people? Walk down any particular high street and you can see people engrossed in a mobile phone, or I pad or whatever. I really do not want to hear a private conversation, especially when it is littered with expletives as I stroll through town. Other changes are more evident. When I was a child, people aged 70 or above were ‘ancient’ ! I can remember being pushed from my seat on a bus by my mum so that an older person, usually a lady, could sit down. We were told to open doors to allow older people through. My mum would often send me next door to ‘borrow’ a cup of sugar because we had run out. Our front or back door was never locked, so our neighbours could pop in for a chat, or seek help or advice. For some reason, we were not afraid to play out and, as a child, I can remember trekking miles to collect wood with my friends for our annual bonfire. Our annual holidays, in the last week of June and the first week of July, aka ‘Wakes Weeks’, were spent in Rhyl. We had policemen, not Community Support Officers. We had Matrons in hospitals which were immaculately clean, not Health Executives. We had a Family Doctor, who knew you and your family inside out, and you could visit him when needed, not gain an appointment in three or four weeks time. You ate what was put in front of you, without help from dieticians or nutritionists and, if you chose not to eat it , hard luck! I can remember my own boys going on school trips to Germany or the USA. More recently, their school has taken children to China. In my day, if you were lucky, school trips were to the Lake District. Sometimes, I think I am growing old- but then, maybe my error in 2016 is that I can think for myself, just like I did some forty years ago. In the words of Bob Dylan, the times really are a changing. Maybe next time I will tell you some of the hilarious tales of a teacher who spent thirty five years in front of ‘God’s Own’ Children.

Two pupils are conducting an unusual experiment - the trial of their Mother for neglect and abuse. If guilty, there’s only one sentence – death… An essential experience for anyone working with children and young people. As my horse failed to jump I lost interest and my eyes wandered onto a sign saying the Red Lion was the most common name for a pub in Britain. I was intrigued, where were they all? how many were there? had anyone ever visited them all? After a couple of hours on Google search the following day nothing came up so the next day I began. The first month or so I picked off local Red Lions, taking photos outside each one and making notes. Then I began plotting weekends away hitting one County after the other. The Journey took over 4 years and 100,000 miles. The most amazing part was the 656 Towns and villages I discovered and because Red Lions are usually hundreds of years old the History within many of them is fascinating. Aldershot was the half way stop taking prisoners to the Isle of Wight prison (where there also is a fantastic Red Lion) and the Officers would shackle them in the cellar overnight while they drank ale, once a German plane crash landed on the Green down the road so they also put him in the cellar. Unfortunatly they forgot about him and he died. He is said to haunt the pub to this day. This all needed logging for the sake of history as many of our historic Red Lion pubs (along with other pubs) continue to close down so my book THE RED LIONESS was published in December 2015 I received a letter from David Cameron congratulating me and thanking me for raising the profile of the British pub. I was awarded Beer Drinker of the year by the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group in May this year. Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September 2016 www.prestonguildcity.co.uk Ever wondered what the view’s like from St Walburge’s spire?* Or what that curious old Sunday school building is near the courts on Ringway?** Find out on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September when 24 historic Preston sites will be welcoming visitors as part of Heritage Open Days – a national celebration of the history all around us.
Preston’s Heritage Open Weekend has been running since 2013 when 12 sites opened. This year there are twice as many opportunities to explore, from special tours at parks and museums to rare chances to look behind normally closed doors in a shop, a pub and a theatre. You can also visit Preston Town Hall and meet the Mayor, find out how precious art is cleaned and cared for in an old church, and pay your respects to the winner of the Victoria Cross in World War I. There are four new sites taking part this year: St George’s Church, Preston Markets, Winckley Square Gardens and Moor Park. If you’re fascinated by architecture, love history or are just plain nosy, this is the weekend to explore Preston’s hidden heritage gems. To find out what’s going on, pick up a leaflet from the Harris, Preston Town Hall or the participating venues. You can also find information online at www.prestonguildcity.co.uk and www.heritageopendays.org.uk. Some sites are open to drop in on one or both days, for others you need to join a tour – check to see if you need to book first. *Airy but amazing **Part of Preston Masonic Hall
