Tales from Tonto: A Kiwi Roadtrip
I write this today from New Zealand, touring North Island in a borrowed Motorhome called Tonto!
New Zealand is a country of rolling hills, mountains, turquoise rivers and beautiful quiet beaches. The roads are wide and empty, so driving is a joy and most towns have plenty of free parking to encourage visitors.
We can freedom camp or use campgrounds. Wherever we go, the welcome is unfailingly cheerful and when they hear an English accent they are keen to know where you are from.
‘Manchester’ we say when there are blank looks for Blackburn or Clitheroe, so the next words are, inevitably, Manchester United! (Sorry City fans)
The cities of Wellington and Auckland are more sophisticated, but most smaller towns with their individual shops have a feel that you’ve stepped back in time.
Mauro culture and language are an
integral part of New Zealand and community spirit is important.
The recent storms have brought tragedy to this nation. We were well out of the way when the bad weather hit but it has been a topic of conversation and we have felt the sorrow of New Zealanders.
This is a nation of readers. Every Op Shop (charity shop) has a well-organised book section. We have found bookshops in most towns and bookswaps on the campgrounds.
Knowing this to be the case we didn’t bring any reading material so we have bought and swapped along the way. Gary has powered through John Grisham, Lee Child and Mark Gimenez.
I’ve enjoyed Tracey Chevalier, Joanna Trollope and Lucinda Riley.
I searched for a local author but the best I could find was, ‘One Illumined Thread’ by the Australian author Sally ColinJames. It’s a thought-provoking www.chaffinchbooks.co.uk

novel about three women who live in vastly different times yet face similar challenges.
Only a few days before we return Tonto to his owners. The nomadic life suits us and so does New Zealand.

CHARLES
Janus Complex?

A philosopher once said if we take too much time looking back then we will never move forward.
February and March are an opportunity to do both. We have overcome Christmas, and Easter seems to be a long way ahead. Life suddenly slows down, and we can think of the promising times ahead. Fifty three years ago, my eldest son was born, and we could hardly foretell where his path through life would take him. Yet the detritus of Christmas still lies around. ‘Treasured’ toys are left to one side and, to somewhat older members, St. Valentine’s Day looms, and suddenly the price of flowers doubles, and shop windows are festooned with Gigantic cards bearing red hearts and rhymes which would make Shakespeare turn in his grave. Do we still send Valentine’s cards with no signature, and are people still annoyed if they do not receive one.? Yet February has a positive side as well.
The garden begins to show signs of life, and Spring begins to show its wonderful self.
Wordsworth wandered ‘Lonely as a cloud’ through the Lake District. Mind you, the clouds in the Lakes and other
areas have brought a different feeling. Floods in Somerset and deep snow in northern Scotland brings a different meaning to Spring. At least we are not in the difficulties in New York, where my son tells me that the temperature has remained at least six degrees below freezing and severe blizzards have made life even more difficult. I can remember staying in the Lake District and having to travel home behind a snow plough.
Happy Days!
Spring cleaning rears its head, and living at home in Bolton meant that my mother enlisted the whole family in scouring the house. The front step had to shine with Red Cardinal polish before she was satisfied.
But March does have its compensations. St David’s Day and St.Patrick’s Day bring happiness to many of our readers. Shamrock was delivered to the Murphy household, and daffodils were seen in many windows. But the most important event is ‘Mother’s Day’, If you can imagine a family as a house, Mother is the mortar which holds everything
together. When my late wife passed away, and the children resumed studies and careers away from home, the cold and the loneliness soon gathered pace. Mums are the very heartbeat of the family, and we must always ensure that we care for them in the best way possible. As the year progresses we learn that time does not stand still. Unlike King Canute, there is little point in trying to stem the tide. Recently, my wife and her friend attended a meal for the elderly in a local church hall and, to their delight, children from the Primary School next door joined them, bringing their own health and vitality. In sharp contrast, the widow of a dear friend of mine spends her days in a nursing home, as her illness requires care at all hours of the day and night. Easter is just around the corner and my wife will celebrate her birthday in a few days. If any of our readers can suggest a present, please let me know, as she has already stated that she does not want any Jewellery or flowers. Perhaps I will simply take her shopping and tell her to buy something. I think it is a wise course of action or the work of a coward. Never mind, we can always eat more Easter Eggs - if the grandchildren leave any.

Man Bag
I now own my fantastic Man Bag, I think it looks good but I’ll not brag.
What I need this bag carries all, It’s neither too big or is it too small. Although carrying everything I need,
I can never find things with speed. For the bag seems to grow with time, It even holds three bottles of wine. The reason I like it, I will tell you why,
Is that it can hold at least six pork pie.

I need a Man Shed
Sat in the garden a thought popped into my head, The time has come now, “I need Man-Shed”. The garage is full with bits and bobs to keep, However, now all my things are in a big heap.
I need a man shed, with a very comfy seat, For when I am indoors, I am always under the feet. My shed would have a big wood burning stove, And just for a laugh, it would be painted mauve.
I would sit in my shed for hours and hours, With a glass of Gin, Surrounded by flowers.
It’s Raining again
When please tell me when will end the winter wet and rain?
If it lasts for many more days it will drive me totally insane.
We always get the rain here in Lancashire in the Northwest, I have gone through two brollies and I’m not impressed.
I never in my life thought these words would come from my mouth, but if the rain doesn’t stop soon I may have to move down South.
Not to see the sunshine again for a month or so fills me with dread, Looking down at my feet now they are starting to become webbed.
I know it is because of the rain the Ribble Valley is so green and lush,
But to see more sunshine I would put up with a bit of brown at a push.
Even though I am in Lancashire and maybe feeling wet and sometimes sad, if I moved down south to the sun, I’m sure that would drive me mad.

Developing Good Habits Early
Renovo Dental is redefining modern orthodontic care, focusing on early intervention, facial development and holistic health
Redefining Modern Orthodontics
Orthodontics today is about far more than straightening teeth. At Renovo Dental, the philosophy has evolved into something much broader - guiding facial growth early to support the face, airway and bite before problems even begin.
“Orthodontics is much more than moving teeth,” says Dr Laurence Masters, Specialist Orthodontist at Renovo Dental. “Our aim is to help the face develop in harmony - creating balance, function and long-term
health. Careful planning and early intervention give us so many more options.”
Interceptive Orthodontics
This forward-thinking approach, known as interceptive or face-driven orthodontics, is at the heart of Renovo’s work with younger patients. Treatment often begins between the ages of seven and eleven, when bones are still growing and most responsive.
By working with natural development rather than waiting for problems

to appear, the team helps to create healthy jaws, wide smiles and strong airways for life.
“It’s not just about aligning teeth,” adds Dr Masters. “It’s about ensuring the whole system functions properly. We call it holistic orthodonticsbecause we treat people, not just teeth.”
Our Difference
The foundation of holistic orthodontics at Renovo lies in precise diagnosis and detailed, bespoke planning. No two cases are ever the same - each treatment is tailored to the patient’s facial structure, growth potential and functional needs.
This individualised, precision-led approach is the cornerstone of Renovo’s success, and the reason patients travel from across the UK for care.
The Modern Jaw Crisis
Clinical Director Dr Usman Riaz points to one of the greatest influences on modern facial development - diet.
“In traditional populations, like tribes in Africa, you’ll see broad jaws, upright posture and 32 perfectly aligned teeth, including wisdom teeth,” explains Dr Riaz. “That’s how our ancestors looked. Today’s soft, processed diets mean we don’t chew enough, which limits bone growth and leads to smaller, narrower jaws with less room for teeth and for the airway.”

He describes this as a silent pandemic of underdeveloped jaws.
At Renovo Dental, this shared vision of early intervention, facial balance and airway health is helping to transform both smiles and lives.
Every week, more children present with crowded teeth, narrow palates and breathing difficulties — issues often caused not by genetics, but by modern lifestyles.
“The good news,” says Dr Riaz, “is that these problems are preventable. If we act early, during the growth phase, we can guide development naturally and avoid long-term complications.”
Mouth breathing adds another challenge, altering tongue posture and encouraging downward facial growth.
“By correcting these patterns early, we can expand the palate, stimulate proper development and often prevent complex treatment later,” adds Dr Masters.
Early Action, Natural Results
Renovo’s proactive model identifies potential issues years earlier than traditional orthodontic care.
Rather than removing teeth to make space, the team uses the body’s own growth to create it.
“We’re given a certain number of teeth for a reason,” says Dr Masters. “At Renovo, we work with naturenot against it - to achieve balance and space without unnecessary extractions.”
The result? Shorter treatments, greater stability and naturally beautiful smiles.

Orthodontic Specialist Centre
With demand growing, Renovo has opened a dedicated Orthodontic Specialist Centre to expand access while maintaining its signature personalised care.
Renovo Dental now welcomes referrals from dentists as well as self-referrals for specialist orthodontic treatment from across the Northwest.
“Be it clear aligners, fixed baces or hidden (lingual) braces, the outcome is determined by accurate diagnosis, meticolus planning and precision delivery.”

MEET DR LAURENCE MASTERS: LECTURER, SPECIALIST AND PRACTITIONER
Dr Laurence Masters is a Specialist Orthodontist with over a decade of experience, having trained in Spain, Portugal and the UK.
Widely known as the ‘holistic orthodontist’, he creates beautiful smiles by connecting breathing, teeth, function and growth – even in the most complex cases.
A respected lecturer and clinician, Dr Masters is now accepting referrals and self-referrals for children and adults seeking truly bespoke orthodontic care.
“Orthodontics should never be one-size- fits-all,” he says. “Our goaloriented, holistic philosophy allows us to treat the whole person, not just the teeth.”

GREENFINGER
Fresh Starts for Your Garden

with new. Refresh stones, pebbles, for a clean new start and apply plant supporters in readiness for summer growth.
8. Keep on top of the weeding, hoe to keep them under control but always beware of large clumps of undergrowth where small animals may be hibernating.
Maybe a new garden extension, new greenhouse or summerhouse and relocation of plants or new varieties. Settle in your comfy chair and design as you wish! At present with the cold snap and prolonged rain, the physical jobs are limited. However, as we move towards the end of February when the sun is shining and we are wrapped up, the grasses can be cut back. Clear any dead foliage from the hellebores, mine have been a delight, so cheery on a winter’s day! Also, mulching the soil with compost and manure in readiness for the Spring and cleaning our tools and pots are all jobs we can pursue!
As we arrive in March, the days are starting to lengthen and the soil is starting to warm. The frequent sunny days, hopefully, remind us that Spring is just around the corner. I’m always so excited to see the wonderful colour of the spring bulbs, first ones generally being the snowdrops in February. Our gardening days by then are well and truly upon us. So, adorned with wellies, tools and gloves, let’s tackle the tasks.
Here are a few pointers, preparation is the key so the more that is done, the more time for relaxation to enjoy the explosion of summer colour...
1. The big Spring Clean Up! Have a good tidy up after the winter.
2. Clean and top dress the containers with fresh compost.
3. I always enjoy potting up spring hanging baskets and pots using a selection of primroses, polyanthus, tete -a – tete, muscari, ferns and miniature tulips.
4. Trim the winter jasmine, clematis hydrangeas, winter jasmine, mahonia, buddleia, winter flowering heathers and evergreen shrubs.
5. Finish pruning the roses early in March, both climber and bush varieties, then feed.
6. Tidy up alpines, mulch with grit.
7. Uplift any woody shrubs and plant

9. As the grass will be waking up, give the lawn its first cut on a suitable, dry day, also scarifying.
10. Don’t forget as the soil warms, protect the new spring shoots on the hostas, lupins and delphiniums from the hungry slugs. For wildlife friendly preparations, use organic slug repellants, try beer traps, a circle of sharp grit or broken egg shells work well. Also, copper rings around tubs are effective.
11. Plant summer flowering bulbs – dahlias, iris, begonias, perhaps try a selection of lilies, rule of thumb is three bulbs in a good sized pot.
12. Sow seeds of all your favourite annual bedding plants. Otherwise, think of buying plug plants and seedlings from your local supplier to grow on.
Lastly, as always, don’t forget our wildlife friends. Keep the bird food refreshed, they love the suet and seeds, all wonderfully nutritious. Fat balls also, are always a winner to peck on, along with fresh water to keep them hydrated. Visiting hedgehogs will also be very grateful of hedgehog food and a house to protect them. I’m also aiming on putting up a few nesting boxes. Happy Gardening Days!
