Social Salsa Dancing It’s not all sequins and fake tan. Social Salsa Dancing It’s not all sequins and fake tan. Ask the man, or woman, in the street what salsa dancing is and they will probably have an opinion based on what they see on Strictly Come Dancing. Glamorous, revealing clothing and fake tan for the ladies and see through shirts and Cuban heel shoes for the guys. They will tell you about the complicated and elaborate routines that take skill and precision to perform. They might also say that you need to be extremely fit and agile to take part. Is that an opinion that matches the reality of salsa dancing in your area?
How are they able to do this? They are simply putting into practice what they have learnt at weekly evening salsa classes which can be found in your area. These classes are very informal with the emphasis on enjoyment while you learn the steps. Slowly, you will gain confidence over a number of weeks and before you know it you are one of those people mentioned above: dancing the night away with an extended group of friends. If you would like to know more or learn more about salsa dancing call Julia on 07931 721697. We’d love to welcome you to our group.
Take away the bright lights, the crowd, Tess and Claudia and the celebrities and come with me to a local salsa event being held near Preston. One of several that take place every month in the North West area. What do we see there? Ordinary people in casual evening wear dancing with each other. The whole dance floor is busy with men and ladies dancing together. Everyone is smiling. The dancing continues right through the night and we see all kind of characters on the floor. Some very experienced and others who are comparative novices. Probably 120 people in total. All enjoying the music and each other’s company.

JS Accountancy Tax services and Advice
We have over 13 years experience in providing accountancy and tax services and advice to small and medium sized businesses across Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire & Cheshire. We provide all the normal services you would expect such as: Monthly & quarterly VAT, bookkeeping and payroll services; Annual accounts and tax returns for limited companies, sole traders, partnerships and individuals; Start-up advice, VAT and self-employment registrations; Restructuring and diversification advice including tax planning, budgeting, cashflows and help with finance and grant applications. However, what sets us apart from the rest is our specialism in rural businesses across the north west. We are market leading in providing the above services to not only farmers but other businesses in sectors such as equine, leisure and tourism which have a link to agriculture and the rural community across the North West. We are still growing fast but client service remains at the heart of our ambitions, with 90% of our new business coming from referrals made by existing clients who are happy with our service. Our growth looks like continuing as we have recently partnered up with software suppliers Sage and Quickbooks to offer the very best in tailor made accountancy packages to meet the specific needs of each of our clients. We offer monthly and quarterly packages which allow are clients to do varying amounts of work themselves from sending us a bag full of bank statements and invoices and letting us do the rest through to larger firms which have a dedicated accounts personel who inputs their data and we then use remote access to check the data and produce monthly management reports and VAT returns. With the immenent introduction of “Making Tax Digital” HMRC’s new digital reporting requirement, bookkeeping and preparation of returns is something that anyone in business will need to look at. Businesses, self employed and landlords no matter how large a scale are going to be required to make quarterly or more frequent digital returns to HMRC. This is going to start phasing in from April 2018.

Summer Raspberry Cheesecake 200g digestive biscuits 75g butter, melted 600g full-fat soft cheese 250g golden caster sugar 150g tub natural yogurt 3 medium eggs finely grated zest 2 lemons, juice of 1 50g plain flour 200g raspberries icing sugar, to decorate
Heat oven to 120C/100C fan/gas and line the base of a 20cm round springform tin with greaseproof paper. Crush the biscuits in a food processor or in a food bag using a rolling pin. Tip into a bowl with the melted butter and mix well. Push the biscuits into an even layer into the base of the cake tin and chill until needed. In a separate bowl use an electric whisk to beat the soft cheese with the sugar. Next beat in the yoghurt then the eggs one at a time. Finally beat in the lemon zest, lemon juice and flour. Fold through two thirds of the raspberries crushing them very slightly so they start to bleed into the mix then tip the mix on top of the biscuit base and smooth over the top. Bake for 45 mins then turn off the oven, leave the cake inside for another hour then cool at room temperature. Chill overnight. To serve, remove from tin, scatter with remaining raspberries and dust heavily with icing sugar.

An American guy was being driven down the prom at blackpool in a taxi, when he said to the driver, “hey buddy whats that” the driver said “ that’s the Norbreck hotel,” the yank replied, back “in the usa we got bigger prefabs,” just then a fire engine flew past doing 90 mph, the yank said “whats that buddy,” to which the taxi driver replied, “oh its just the local window cleaner late for work”. Two Eggs two eggs in a pan boiling away when 1 says to the other, “hell its warm in ere,” the other replied, “wait while you get out of ere they smash ure head in.” OXO Oxo were going to bring out a commemorative cube painted red white and blue in honour of the England football squad, but it was a laughing stock and it crumbled in the box. Job Interview Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human
Resources Officer asks a young engineer fresh out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, “And what starting salary are you looking for?” The engineer replies, “In the region of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.” The interviewer inquires, “Well, what would you say to a package of five weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every two years, say, a red Corvette?” The engineer sits up straight and says, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The interviewer replies, “Yeah, but you started it.” The Row A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrr-gerrr Kiiing.”

It was bank holiday Monday
I’m on My Own This Weekend
It was a bank holiday and we didn’t know what we wanted to do. So Her indoors said “I know let’s go to the pub, but just for a cake and a brew”. Now in my most manly voice I said to The One Who Is So Wise And Dear: “Do you think that I’ve come into a pub and drink coffee instead of beer?!” Now as you can imagine this went down a treat with She Who Must Be Obeyed. She said in her most aggravated voice “When your like this we should have at home stayed”. At this stage I should have realised that now I was in serious trouble. For the Her indoors said “if you think everything is alright I now am about to burst your bubble.” I knew that the time had come to get myself back in favour with the powerful one. So I went over to the bar and ordered two coffees, and a jam scone.
Er Indoors has gone gadding again, to Daughter’s for a day or two, Er sed” be on thi best behaviour I’m freetend what tha may do”. I towd her I could manage on my own whilst she was not on hand. Er said “don’t be fiddling with anything tha doesn’t understand”.
Her Indoors said for me to hang some wallpaper on downstairs loo. this is normally something that Her Indoors would choose to do. I was taken by surprise and I did wonder why she asked me at all For she had always said she loved the job of papering any wall.
We’ve just had a new television delivered, one of them smart TV. I hadn’t’ listened how to use the remote, I didn’t need to you see. I thought that I knew how to use the tele to watch Ant and Dec, I wish I hadn’t for I can’t view any programme not one can I select.
I decided to get stuck in strip thowd paper without making a mess, Thinking I was to be supervised did vastly increase my level of stress. When she came back from town after doing her weekly big shop, Her said “what the heck are you doing?”, then went into a right strop
When the time for her indoors to come home just as she planned. I know she will again explain just why from doing things I’m banned.
“I should have known tha tha would do something tha shouldn’t do, What I asked you was to wallpaper the Daughters downstairs Loo”

Life with ‘The Catenians’ In the last issue, I gave you a brief insight into the reasons why I joined the Catenians. So now, who are they and what do they do... In our picture, you can see three young local students receiving cheques from our Bursary Fund. They are going to Peru in 2018 to help the local people in trying to bring education and aid to young children over there. These young students may help teachers, they may organise games... they may even help to paint classrooms. To obtain some support to meet the costs of this Venture, the students asked the Catenians for help. We offered each pupil some funding to assist them in this very worthy enterprise. In the past couple of years, we have offered help to students at St Augustine’s High School in Billington going to offer their help at Lourdes, students at St. Albans Church Blackburn going to Lourdes with HCPT, and a student form Our Lady’s in Langho ,who was in her second year at Durham University, taking time to work in Peru with severely disadvantaged children

Now we need your help! We do not want your money! But we would like your company. We invite you and your partner to see for yourself. Just last week we had a very tasty BBQ. In August we are going on a short stroll around Lytham before having ‘Fish’n’Chips’ in Whelan’s famous cafe. We have lots of other activities planned for later in the year – perhaps a trip to Manchester for their famous Christmas Market!
Come along! Join us! You may enjoy a good time with other Catholic people from this area. Further information from Richard Tel: 07594 365359 See you soon, Charles

Create Longridge 2017 Create Longridge 2017 attracted artists
from all over the North West; Cumbria in the North, Manchester in the South, Liverpool in the West and Wakefield in the East. Artists had 10 hours to create brand new, original artwork from scratch within a 3 mile radius of Longridge town centre. There were no restrictions on what the artists could paint; Create Longridge is for all the artistic talents, that’s what makes it such fun.
A total of 75 paintings created on the day were submitted for judging by 6pm. The judges, who included Tracy Levine last year’s winner, were unanimous in awarding Ribble Valley artist Steve Rostron first prize. Steve won £2,000 and the prize was sponsored by DST Group Limited from Morecambe. Liam Dickinson came second and Colin Binns was third. Local businesses Singletons Dairy and Hoppy Days Micropub sponsored second and third prizes respectively. “It was a fabulous day of creative endeavour,” said Alistair Sheret, one of the Create team. “The artists
CP AUGUST 2017.indd 42
were truly magnificent and produced work of the highest standard. The judges had an unenviable task. I would like to thank those businesses which sponsored the event and the wonderful Create team who contributed so much to the day’s proceedings. Steve is a truly talented and worthy winner.” As well as the painting competition, Create Longridge day included children’s art classes, willow sculpting, fused glass making, a collaborative textile event and a sketching competition to win a guitar and six months’ tuition.
The Create team has received fantastic feedback from visitors to the event and businesses in Longridge. One sponsor reported takings higher than on Christmas Eve and many new potential customers were introduced to the town’s shops, cafes and bars. One visitor said that Create Longridge was the only reason he and his wife had ever come to the town and they will definitely be making many return visits.

A last Rummage in my Memory Box. By Peter Dewhurst
One of my early memories, is a toddler living in Longridge. I am sat on tricycle outside our house with curly hair and wearing a green jumpsuit. Another embarrassing photo is of me and my siblings arranged on the front step of our terraced house, looking like ragamuffins.(that will never see the light of day again) One of the most enjoyable things we did as a family was in autumn when we collected blackberries, for pie making, bottling to store over winter, and for Dad to make our family favourite blackberry jam. In those days free time was sometimes spent walking through the paths in the fields around Longridge, Chipping, Ribchester and district. I could bore you with details of the routes we walked back then, many are still in use today, although I think some of the public footpaths across the fields now may be lost in time. I am so glad that I had the chance to walk the paths with my daughter which I was introduced to by my father, also passing on a love of scrambling for blackberries. From a very early age we were introduced to the fantastic game of POOH STICKS, usually on a bridge over a small stream down Dilworth Bottoms. This was a good place for you could follow your chosen twig downstream and over the ford before it vanished from sight. Even now after many years have passed, I with my own family can still be seen playing Pooh sticks wherever we find a stream and a bridge.(You can never be too Old). Some weekends in summer, my sister, Dad, and I could be found on our bikes. (Mum had more sense!), Sometimes riding the local roads, other times heading for Knott End, or Fleetwood if we fancied a long ride. Our bikes only had three gears not like the multi geared bikes of today. If the hill was too steep to ride up you just had to get off the bike and walk. Most Saturday afternoons would find us shopping in the old outdoor Blackburn market searching for the end of the days bargains. (This was because the stallholders needed to sell the foods that would not keep until the next market day on the following Wednesday). You could always count on a bargain. This was vital for we had very little money at this time. Like many families in the fifties the clothes washing was done on a Monday, as it was in past generations in “Washhouse” which was a shed in the yard with a gas boiler, dolly tub, posser, and mangle. (That will confuse the younger ones) ask Mr Google. There was no television in our house when we were young, so we used to go to various relatives houses if there was a pro-

gramme we wanted to watch. Dad always said, “Colour telly is on the way so I won’t be buying a black and white one”. “We did not have a car so on occasions, my Uncle who had transport would take us out for a ride, in his car. (This was a Hearse at one time; he like Dad was a painter and decorator, so the hearse was good for carrying ladders, paint cans and numerous young children.) Like many families back then we didn’t not have the luxury of central heating, relying instead on a Rayburn wood and coke burner in the kitchen. With only that and a single gas fire in the front room. bedtime saw us wrapped up in a Army or Air force greatcoat. (The only duvet with sleeves.) Here we go, you didn’t think you would get away without a food memory? Dad wanted to be a baker, not a painter and decorator so he liked to bake whenever he had the chance. One memory in particular is when he made brandy snaps. When they’d baked, Dad would quickly put them over a broom handle positioned between two chairs in the kitchen, to achieve the required shape. We would try to eat them straight from the oven if we dared. We would also eat bread the same way just out of the oven smothered with butter. I count myself lucky to have had my childhood in the fifties, before computers, mobile phones, X Boxes and the demands of modern life changed the way young people have to grow to adulthood now. This was the last Rummage in my memory box.(Thanks for traveling back with me.)
