SPF is the most powerful anti-ageing weapon there is – and it is clinically proven, so no argument there. Although if you are younger, you might argue that SPF belongs in the ‘prevention’ category. You also want to ensure that it is broad spectrum, environmentally clean and photostable. It doesn’t fix any damage that is already done – that’s the job of Vitamin A.
behave in a younger and healthier way – and so with continued use, you can expect your skin to be smoother brighter and firmer. But choose your Vitamin A with care – and use it wisely! All Vitamin A products should be phased in over a period of four weeks. Melt have partnered with Medik8, Nourish and Dr Haushka that are specialists in skincare which is scientifically proven to help ageing skin look younger.
The truth behind whether a topical skin product works or not comes down to the ingredients it’s packed with, how that product is formulated and whether or not they contain high enough levels of the active key ingredients to be of any value to the skin. The point of anti-ageing skincare is to make older, possibly damaged, skin behave in a younger and healthier way and this is how these three key ingredients do it.
More importantly, they can help guide you on their correct use and entry level for your skin type and age – and advise when to step up to the next level for continued improvement. This is one of the most powerful vitamins for preventing the signs of ageing and reversing the signs of skin damage. It is an exceptional antioxidant which protects your skin throughout the day from free radical attack caused by pollutants and it also disrupts the formation of melanin, so helps prevent age spots and promotes even skin tone. It is essential for the formation of collagen – which in turn prevents lines and wrinkles. So, no Vitamin C – no collagen!
Hailed as the gold-standard in anti-ageing, Vitamin A (a retinoid) is one of the most well proven ingredients in skincare. It is the only other ingredient along with SPF that is legally allowed to claim to be anti-ageing.
As we age, loss of Vitamin A and collagen helps create those signs of ageing such as wrinkles and a dull complexion. But retinoids (Vitamin A) can help reverse this.
It rebuilds collagen, increases cell turnover, targets hyperpigmentation, tackles acne, refines skin texture, repairs sun damage, targets wrinkles – and is an all-round good egg. Essentially, it challenges ageing skin to

Anti-ageing skincare, does it exist and does it work?
Happily, the answer is yes, but time and again the science comes back to three, clinically proven, key ingredients –Vitamin C, sunscreen and Vitamin A

“I had swapped dentists a number of times and then the dentist I moved to retired,” recalls Jack, whose wife Shirley knew
As an extremely active 83-yearold, Jack Morris has undergone life-changing, dental implant treatment that has given him the smile he has always wanted.
Jack has also seen the benefits to his health and confidence too – and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Renovo Dental. Seeking specialist dental treatment, patients throughout the UK travel to the new, Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental, where there is a top team of dental specialists, in-house dental technicians and general practitioners working with some of the very latest state-of-the-art technology.
After wearing loose dentures for several years and being advised on numerous occasions there was insufficient bone for dental implants, Jack felt he had come to the end of the road in his attempts to resolve the problem.
But when he asked for a consultation with the team at Renovo Dental, he began to see light at the end of the tunnel, as he explains: “I had lost my upper teeth at quite an early
Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo Dental, having undergone implants with him almost a decade ago.
“She was highly pleased with her implants,” says Jack. “I had always been told that I had insufficient bone to have implants and that it would be too complex – I wasn’t making any progress in improving the situation so I asked Shirley if Usman would see me for an assessment.”
Usman, a highly experienced clinician with

a special interest in aesthetic and implant dentistry, readily agreed to see Jack, who went along to the beautifully restored Renovo surgery in the village of Chatburn: “Usman carried out the assessment – and while he said implants would be quite complex, he said it was possible.”
Usman explains: “Jack had been told that implants just weren’t possible, but he persevered. He was struggling with loose fitting, partial dentures and was finding it difficult to eat.
“During the initial assessment a CT scan was done and yes, it revealed Jack didn’t have sufficient bone. So, we agreed that bone grafting was the solution.”
Bone grafting was performed to replace destroyed bone surrounding the teeth roots. The bone graft then helped to serve as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. Testament to their skills, the team at Renovo, carried out the bone graft procedure in the same visit as the implant placements.
“The team at Renovo have been superb! I can’t recommend them highly enough. They treat you as a client with total respect –you’re not just a number.
“All the staff are so reassuring. It’s made a terrific difference to my life,” says Jack, who spends time with Shirley in Tenerife each year. “I can now eat okay – and I like my food!” says the former award-winning Bolton butcher.
Speaking about Jack’s treatment, Usman adds: “Jack is a really sociable guy, prominent in the community and resolving his dental problems was a big thing for him. It wasn’t just about aesthetics it was a functional issue that was affecting his quality of life.”
As a brand-new clinic, Renovo has invested in the latest digital dental technology, including a state-of-the-art CT scanner which allows the team to plan and perform very precise implant surgery. This CT-guided surgery for implants is faster, easier and more efficient for surgeons and safer, more comfortable and results in faster healing for patients.
Preparation is the key to the success and the team of dental nurses, dental technicians and implant surgeons, all play their part on the day.

“No two smiles are the same, so there is no ‘one-size-fits all’ when it comes to this level of Implant dentistry,” says Usman.
“Like all our other patients, the implants have completely changed Jack’s smile,” adds Usman. “Implants can transform people –they gain confidence and restore self-esteem. It may sound a cliché, but this treatment really does change their lives.” n
Renovo Dental treats patients throughout the region, who have been referred by their general dentist as well as self-referrals
Working alongside Usman on Jack’s dentistry was highly experienced specialist periodontist and implant surgeon Dr Khurrum Hussain, who completed specialist training in periodontology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute, London.
As a periodontal specialist, he deals with gum disease and the soft tissue surrounding the palate, degenerating bone issues and failing implants.
Following treatment to improve bone density and the health of Jack’s gums, a period of healing followed before the final implant-supported teeth were fitted – and the results have been transformative for Jack:

Photography: Robin Lyndon Photography: Robin LyndonApril is here and at last, the weather is starting to take a turn for the better. As the cold snap persisted throughout March, the low temperatures, frosts, wind and rain have definitely made myself and fellow gardeners behind with our tasks. However, on a brighter note, the days are getting longer so we need to crack on to make our plots beautiful and productive for the forthcoming months. So, on fine days, don some warm clothes, grab your newly cleaned gardening tools and head outdoors to catch up and continue with the all important tasks as follows :-
1. Continue the winter tidying up and then add well rotted manure or compost to your soil beds for nourishment. It will make all the difference for the summer growth. Pots alike will need cleaning and replenishing.
2. Cut back the lavender plants, heathers and tidy up the grasses.
3. Although the spring flowers are later blooming this year, remove any faded flowers. If you want some of the spring display to neutralize, let the flowers die back naturally, the likes of scillas, snowdrops, crocus and muscari.
4. Feed the hungry shrubs and roses.
5. If you have lost any trees or shrubs over the long winter, now is the time to visit your local garden centre to replenish. Water regularly to help them nurture and become established.
6. Weeding is an ongoing must. A few minutes constantly
with a hoe will keep the unwanted species at bay.
7. Repair any patches to your lawn. Apply a nitrogen fertilizer to your lawn now for a boost to the start of the season and apply lawn weed killer where moss and weeds are a problem. Mow the lawn weekly as temperatures improve. For a new lawn, lay either turf, ensuring it is kept moist until established. Alternatively, sow lawn seed onto well prepared soil, again, keeping it well watered whilst germinating.
8. The garden wildlife are busy, the birds, bees and insects are all establishing nests. Climbers such as passion flower, wisteria, clematis, pyracantha, honeysuckle and star jasmine are all wonderful varieties to support the wildlife and also provide beautiful floral coverage for fences. Now is the time to plant some if you have a little extra space!
9. Stake perennials and continue to tie in the new stems of climbing plants to support and protect against wind and rain. Bamboo stakes and metal plant supports are ideal, soft string, plant/ flower rings for the more fragile varieties.
10. When May arrives, it is time to think of planting up the outdoor pots and hanging baskets. Keep in a greenhouse or porch for a few weeks. I aim to have them in situ by the end of the month when we are frost free.
Well, lots to do, lots of ‘steps’ to be done to achieve our goals. But, what could be better than in the fresh air, pursuing a favourite hobby. Happy Gardening, enjoy!!
