GOOD MORNING EVERYONE:

Across the Great Divide Good afternoon and a warm welcome from a cold and frosty Penwortham. One of the strange feelings about writing in our magazine is that I never really know what the reader thinks. However, sometimes it is easy to come to a conclusion, for as I set sail on this particular venture, I can immediately call to mind another ‘crazy’ idea undertaken by the Murphy family just two weeks ago. Some of you may recall that my youngest son works and lives in New York. Over the past two years, since January 2020 to be exact, we had not met in person. Just after last Christmas, he came home on a flying visit! But then he had to return to New York. In early February, he told me that he was going to marry his partner of the past ten years in New York, and he wanted my wife Yvonne and I to join him.

confusion at check-in at the Airport. Then, gentlemen please note, what does your beloved need for a short trip to the USA – don’t ask! We ﬂew with Aer Lingus (I am sure there are many alternatives) and arrived at JFK. Immediately we were assailed by ‘taxi drivers’ offering us transport to our hotel, and in one case at twice the average fare. However, we found a reasonable fare, and off we went to New York on a twenty mile trip In a HUGE Chevrolet. I think we could have seated most of the Ribble Valley inside! Our hotel was quaint, even ‘English? A porter, in top hat and tails greeted us and made us feel very welcome. It was now 6pm local time, which is 11pm GMT. After a drink in the hotel bar ( absolutely extortionate prices eg 10 dollars for a small beer) with my son and his partner, we decided to visit a local ‘ diner ‘ for a snack. I ordered Beefburger and fries, and Yvonne asked for a sandwich and fries. We were provided with enough food to resolve malnutrition throughout the third world!! If the Americans have weight problems, I am not surprised, and our coffee cup was replenished over and over again! Finally, we staggered to the hotel at about 10pm aka 3am GMT. Very tired! And on to day two - the wedding day. Breakfast in the hotel was excellent- a bowl of porrage with honey and raisins, two slices of toast with jam and marmalade and as much coffee as you wished for only ﬁfteen dollars! Did I tell you about the statutory ‘gratuities’- an extra 20% on your bill- with tip if you wished to do so. After the ceremony, we walked down to Central Park on a beautiful Spring morning. Warm temperature and lots of people enjoying themselvesa real sight to see in the midst of gigantic sky scrapers!

There was even some young people skating on an artificial ice rink. Wonderful! Then across the road for a fabulous Wedding Breakfast in a well known restaurant – champagne included. Tell you more next time – do not forget to tip!

And so the chaos started! Problem number one was that only one person would be allowed to witness the ceremony, because of Covid restrictions in the United States. Problem resolved- the mother of his Partner, Andy, would be that person. Next, travel!!! oh dear- the USA has severe restraints and we had to undertake an Antigen test some twenty four hours before our ﬂight. Fortunately we found a Centre in Preston. One very useful hint- download the ‘VERiﬂy’ app. It cuts out all the
