BusinessofaART

You don’t have to be an art enthusiast or collector to have noticed the scandalous headlines over the past decades roiling the art market… Fake Rothko’s … money laundering … industrial-scale fraud. But as art collecting and sales continue to skyrocket - $65 billion in 2023 - the potentially staggering sums involved in curating art for pleasure and asset management have made it trickier but all the more important to ensure that a painting is the real deal. Welcome to the business of art.

There are numerous considerations in valuing art, but two critical aspects: authenticity and provenance. Authenticity is verification that the work is both genuine and made by the designated artist, and it is the starting point for determining a piece’s value. Provenance refers to an artwork’s ownership history, auction records, conservation records, certificates, and bills of sale, and it is integral in establishing authenticity. Secondly, provenance can help establish that the work was not, at any point, obtained illegally. In some cases, such as prior notoriety of ownership, a work’s provenance can add value.

18

ART

As a starting point to ensure the integrity of Carrie’s work and guarantee provenance for collectors – one half of the equation for accurate asset valuation - in 2020 cf&co began converting to a third-party authentication system.

Utilizing the newest technology all Carrie Fell originals and editions have a digital certificate of authenticity issued through Verisart, which is encrypted and stored on the Bitcoin blockchain. The blockchain is a public record, however only accessible to the entity that has the digital key to the certificate. Each blockchain record is tamper-proof which ensures the certificate timestamps are securely and permanently recorded. The combination of security, transparency, and anonymity the blockchain provides enables certification and verification without the risk of corruption, loss, or expiration - thus protecting the records of creation and ownership, ensuring the provenance half of the valuation equation is sound.

If you are interested in having cf&co certify your artwork, please contact us at info@carriefell.com.

Pioneering

Connoisseurs

Collector Focus: Dana Smith and Scott Niederbrach

Dana Smith and Scott Niederbrach of Castle Rock, CO first saw Carrie’s artwork passing by the Carrie Fell Gallery en route to dinner at Matsuhisa in the Solaris at Vail.

Captivated by her use of colors and interesting subject matter, they later reached out to Carrie at her studio in Denver and were even more delighted when the artist herself answered the phone.

Over a dinner of good food and great wine at Shanahan’s Steakhouse in Denver, Dana and Scott chatted with ARTful style about the first impression of Carrie, what calls them back time and time again, and creating a long-term friendship with the artist.

“I decided to call the studio to see if we could visit and see more pieces. Carrie actually answered the phone, and I seriously was so shocked I didn’t even know what to say!!” said Dana. “We love the very down-to-earth character that Carrie is. Having art in your space that not only makes you happy but that is a

product of someone who is a friend and so genuine just makes it that more meaningful and special to us.”

As a Wyoming native, Carrie’s art especially resonates with Dana.

“The Western art speaks to me on a very personal level … My father is a cowboy and is still team-roping at 77. I am reminded of him when I look at the western pieces of art in our collection and it always makes me smile.”

Their initial acquisitions were pieces that perfectly combined their Mountain Modern interior design style with Carrie’s classic Western impressionism. As they moved into a new home, their collection expanded to almost a dozen pieces, leaning more on classic-themed works like “Perfect Storm,” “In Between Dark And Light,” and “Foodies Uncorked.”

However, more recently they have added “The Socialite” from Carrie’s MODERN SOCIAL series and shown an adventurous streak in acquiring a new abstract, "Waters Edge."

“We had just started collecting a few pieces of Carrie’s and then we moved into a house that was basically a blank slate. That allowed us to design around the art and give it a perfect place to live as opposed to trying to find a spot for each piece after the fact.”

Their advice for collectors just starting out, “Collect what speaks to you and what you love. This will be the art you wake up to in the morning and go to sleep with in the evening so you should be sure you are the best of friends with it. It’s very personal so make sure it means something to you.”

Reflections of High Point Market Spring 2024

No matter how I prepare myself, I am never fully ready for the overabundance of new ideas and creative insight in the trade of art and design waiting to be discovered at the High Point Market in North Carolina. This renowned event gathers industry professionals, designers, artists, creators from all over the world. It's an opportunity to find unique pieces, make valuable connections, and gain inspiration for future projects. As an artist that incorporates all elements of design within my artwork, business and my lifestyle, it can only evoke one question…. How do I progress and expand my repertoire?

Poring over the many photos I captured within my visit this Spring, what I found most interesting, was the lighting. Lighting specific to the abundance of exceptional examples of functional design by skilled craftsman,

imaginative architects and inventive engineers offered both beauty and balance. Great lighting can add sparkle, elegance and a pronounced interest to a space.

Just as similar, was my experience visiting the Hamptons Market Art and Design, in 2021, when I returned filled with enthusiasm inspired by adding color through LED lighting to my art. I discovered that LED lighting allows viewers to appreciate the composition with a heightened presence through line and shape with an unexpected, quieting luminosity. LED lighting contours clever details and nuances with enhanced visibility, creating a more immersive and engaging experience for art enthusiasts.

Light is an essential element of life, it boosts our vision, brings beauty, finds comfort and radiates color in the spaces we LOVE to live, with artful style. – Carrie Fell
