THE LANTERN
A MINUTE WITH OUR GENERAL MANAGER Dear Carriage Club Members: First off… kudos to The Carriage Club Staff for an excellent Easter Brunch. Despite the rain, the day was filled with a spectacular spread of culinary delights, egg hunts every hour and a petting zoo with a baby Kangaroo! It was great to see the club filled with their families and smiles all day long. We have many events coming up in May. Please make sure to make your reservation Mother’s Day Brunch on May 8th. But we all know the most anticipated date is the opening day of the POOL! We are excited to serve the membership pool side starting Friday, May 20th. Bret Miller will be returning for his 21st summer to manage the pool. He has been educating our lifeguards and pool staff regarding the importance of the rules and enforcing them fairly. However, we believe that our best asset in creating a safe and friendly pool environment for the season begins with our members. For everyone’s enjoyment, we are asking that all members read and understand the rules (located on page 14). Please take the time to go over this information with all the members of your household who will be using the pool this summer. For all current Swim and Dive Calendar of Events and times of operation refer to The Lantern or Club website for the most up-to-date information. Hope everyone can come out and relax poolside with a nice cold beverage offered from our bar service. We will be featuring live music on Friday nights along with other specials for the entire family to enjoy. If you have any questions regarding pool operations, feel free to contact Bret Miller, Pool Manager, at poolandicerink@thecarriageclub.com or myself, at davidn@thecarriageclub.com or 816-363-1310 and we will be happy to assist. In addition to the pool, we hope all the members are excited about the sixth season of our Sport Court. The Sport Court features four courts of Pickleball, Dodgeball, Inline Hockey, and Basketball. With the addition of Hockey Director, Simon Watson, there will be more off-season hockey programs offered from the club. Please visit our website for the schedule of play. New menus coming for the summer season! Chef James will be including grab and go options for the busy member and healthy options for the kids. Summer is coming! We look forward to seeing you at the club. Sincerely, David North General Manager
A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Jeff Hargoves President, Board of Directors THE CARRIAGE CLUB
Happy Spring Everyone, I hope this note finds everyone well and starting to enjoy our great outdoors more each week. Spring is a wonderful time in Kansas City. Our Easter Brunch was a wonderful success with over 600 guests. Please take some time to browse the pictures and see all the smiles. We have an experienced and thoughtful board in place to guide our club this year, with many important initiatives already underway in 2022. Top of our list is to get our club fully staffed at all levels with the greatest possible talent. Our GM and senior staff are working hard to fill positions across our club to ensure you receive the best service in the city. A few of the additional items we will be working on this year include: development of our Strategic Plan solidify and expand our reciprocal club agreements planning and executing the city-wide Dive Champs this year and preparing for Swim Champs next year We are also catching up on a lot of deferred maintenance around the club – for 3 main reasons: we have many needs that have been delayed and need to be addressed financially, we are in good shape to make the investments we will put our best aesthetic foot forward for Dive, Swim Champs and you Some of these projects may cause slight disruptions to your normal routines, so we ask for your patience as we complete things like pool surface refinishing, parking lot resurfacing, clay court rebuilding, rock wall tuckpointing and repair, and many other projects. We have heard the request to provide a consistent set of open hours for Dining in the Main Clubhouse. Many of the newest members may not have yet utilized this area since we have reopened after the pandemic shutdown. Please know that we have a top Chef – James McCausland, about whom I continue to hear compliments and who is leading our dedicated staff to create wonderful dining experiences for you and your guests. And lastly, a reminder that if you have ideas for improvements about any aspect of the club, please reach out in any way, any time, to share your thoughts and suggestions. If you are interested to become more involved – take a look at the list of committees and other opportunities to be of service to the club and your fellow members. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President in 2022, Jeff Hargroves President Board of Directors

POOL COMMITTEE
Dear Carriage Club Member: The 2022 swimming pool season will soon be upon us with the swimming pool opening Friday, May 20. After a very challenging winter, we are hoping that the weather cooperates this season so that you will be able to enjoy one of our great amenities. A major factor in the enjoyment of the pool is that members and guests conduct themselves in a safe manner. The Board of Directors and Staff are highly recommending that all members read and understand the rules and expectations for the pool area included in this mailing. We ask that you take the time to go over this information with all the members of your household who will be using the pool this summer. It is vital that we ensure a safe and pleasurable experience for our members and guests. I am pleased to say I will be returning for my 21st summer to manage the pool. I have been educating our lifeguards and other pool staff regarding the importance of the rules and enforcing them fairly. However, we believe that our best asset in creating a delightful pool environment for the season begins with our wonderful members! In addition, we hope all the members are excited about the sixth season of our Sport Court. The Sport Court features four courts of Pickleball, Dodgeball, Inline Hockey, and Basketball. With the addition of Hockey Director, Simon Watson, there will be more off-season hockey programs offered at the club and at other rinks around town. Please visit our website for the schedule of play. While the Pool Rules are included, please be reminded that we are a family-oriented club and that members and guests are to dress accordingly. Family appropriate bathing suits are required at all times (i.e. appropriate cover, no thongs). Members are to register your guests at the lifeguard check-in desk, and that all members are responsible for the actions of their guests. Member children under the age of 18 are only allowed 3 guests per day. Our Swim and Dive Team members are reminded that towels will not be provided during practice or meets , so please remember to bring your towel. Finally, in parallel with our Tennis and Fitness instruction policies, both individual and group swim and dive lessons may only be provided by approved Club Staff. Please refer to The Lantern or Club website for the current Swim and Dive Calendar of Events and operating information. The Coach house menu features fresh, healthy and gluten-free options, as well as Club favorites. And of course, you can relax poolside with a nice cold beverage offered from our bar service. Our fire pit on the pool deck once again proved to be a great gathering place for members to enjoy an appetizer or favorite beverage. We continue to improve our landscaping around the pool and on the pool deck for an enhanced ambiance. If you have any questions regarding pool operations, feel free to contact me at poolandicerink@thecarriageclub.com or the General Manager, at davidn@thecarriageclub.comor 816-363-1310 and we will be happy to assist. We look forward to seeing you in the pool and at the Coach House! Sincerely, Bret Miller Pool Manager

Let’s get flexible! You eat the right foods, drink the right drinks, and exercise regularly. In other words, you’re strong and healthy. There is only one hole in your overall good health. You’re as flexible as a piece of plywood. But there’s good news! You don’t have to stay inflexible your entire life. With the right steps, you can improve your flexibility, which will make life that much better. Ready to get started building a more flexible you? Here’s how. Roll Before For many years, it was common practice to stretch before working out. In recent years, folks have ditched that advice for something better: lightly performing whatever you plan to do. Going to run? Walk and then jog before getting into a run. For those who want to take their routines to the stretchy limit, it’s time to use a foam roller. With a foam roller, you work to gently stretch your muscles before working them out, and better yet, you stretch them out safely. Essentially a massage for your muscles, foam rolling helps your muscles relax and stretch. This, in turn, allows your entire muscle to be worked out in the gym afterward and prevents an already tight muscle from growing tighter through your exercise routine. Once you knock out a little foam rolling, the time is right for a round of bodyweight exercises or light activity before going full force.
FITNESS
Go All the Way As you exercise, you can help your flexibility by working throughout your entire range of motion. Initially, you may have a harder time squatting your full range of motion, but sticking with it will allow your muscles to work all the way and will lead to them being more flexible. To get to where you can squat or perform other exercises as deep as your body allows, you will probably want to reduce the amount of weight you use. As your body grows accustomed to going through a fuller range of motion, you can increase the weight and enjoy improved flexibility. Stretch Afterwards Your routine winds down, and your muscles feel tight and want to stay that way. Folks who are new to working out often enjoy the feeling. It lets them know their body has worked hard, and so they allow the tightness to remain as they leave the gym and return to their daily routines. However, this is when your stretches become most important. By taking 10 minutes to slowly stretch, you can take a huge step toward your overall flexibility. A good postworkout stretch will focus on the areas worked during your routine, but will provide a little stretching for the entire body. You can also finish your stretching with more foam rolling if you have time, as this will help further your flexibility goals. Take It Slow When stretching for increased flexibility, you may be tempted to push it as far as you can. But don’t give in. Instead, you should relax and take the slow and easy-going path to flexibility. Going too far too fast will actually have the opposite result that you want, as your body will have to repair itself from small injuries that occur from stretching and won’t want to stretch further in the future. Instead, take your time and allow your body to ease into stretches. Feel an uncomfortable burning sensation that actually hurts? That is not your body’s way of thanking you. Back off and stretch to the point of slight discomfort. Accept that you can’t increase your flexibility overnight, and you will make better headway than beating your muscles into flexible submission. Call or email me today to get started on a challenging and consistent exercise plan to increase flexibility as well as reduce your body fat and increase your energy levels. Let’s do this! Gregg Best Director of Fitness
There are 3 pieces of equipment that we use in our studio. 1) Tower - this apparatus challenges the body with flexibility. It's attached to the end of the reformer. It offers amazing flexibility exercises along with core strength. 2) Chair - this apparatus challenges the body with strength. There are a lot of full body strengthening exercises that can be done on the chair. 3) Reformer - this apparatus is a nice blend of strength and flexibility. It's the only piece of equipment that Joseph Pilates had a workout routine for like he had for matwork. Currently, we have just the 3 pieces of equipment but soon we will be adding a 4th apparatus, the spine corrector, another piece of equipment that Joseph Pilates designed. It offers both strength and flexibility especially extension of the spine, meaning putting our spine in a backbend type of position. As Americans we have our spine in flexion meaning folded over more than extension so the spine corrector helps combat the spinal flexion improving our posture. Along with our new flooring, new equipment, we have added a lot of classes to the schedule. We have classes everyday except for Sunday. If you have never tried pilates before, contact Lisa Cherepak, Pilates Manager at 913 219 7779 or lisa@thecarriageclub.com and we will get you started. Lisa Cherepak Pilates Instructor
PILATES
Carriage Club's pilates studio is now open in the main clubhouse (women's card room) with brand new flooring and better yet brand new equipment. Joseph Pilates developed these pieces of equipment in the early 1900's for use to challenge and balance out the human body as well as rehabilitative purposes.
