What is Architecture to me? An objective truth about making place of the space we occupy. It is too, a subjective experience that makes an occasion of time. Whether we choose to be influenced by it or not, it remains a primary dialogue between us and our surroundings.

Consequencing our psychology and physiology, affecting our well-being and potentially shaping change. “You can choose not to look at a painting, or not to listen to a song, you can even ignore a sculpture on the street if you close your eyes, but you can’t chose to ignore architecture” Bruno zevi. it is your environment. I would be naïve to ever think I could change the world, but completing a degree in Architecture, together with these observations make me excited to be a part of this industry and perhaps play my own small positive contribution to change and improvement in my own communities and those to which I am yet be acquainted. HAVING GROWN UP ON A SMALL HOLDING getting covered in red Kalahari sand after school, fashioning wire cars and building the occasional 'mantlwane' (see tswana definition) from branches and dry

I loved creating with my hands from a young age & inevitably began my ‘official’ architectural studies in Port Elizabeth for my National Diploma before completing a Bachelor of Architecture in Pretoria. As a former athlete I pride myself on perseverance and grit. I am an out of the box thinker and often find solutions to problems away from the traditional. I wish for my work to echo the same in some small way. I thrive outside off my comfort zone, where I have always witnessed growth take root. I am passionate about creative design solutions, interrogating problems and continual development. Extensive experience with Autodesk Revit; Autocad and leading realtime rendering softwares. I have had exposure to residential, civil and commercial design; documentation and construction both in my own capacity as well as in the pressurized environment of a medium sized architectural consortium. I am able to communicate and liase with all levels of staff and external engagements with proficiency and competence to achieve individual and organizational goals.

a New family home for a private client. The ever changing brief was to create a family home comfortable for both the client and their children to live in harmoniously. The initial concept was of a sketchplan conceived by the client, and considerably developed thereon with regular influence and involvement from the family to create a bespoke fit for their specific needs aswell as desires. .

SUCCESSFUL 4TH YEAR DESIGN COMPETITION PROPOSAL

in conjunction with a new masterplan proposAL for the INFORMAL transport terminas in itereleng, a canopy DESIGN was to be chosen from the tshwane university of technology 4th year design group informed by feedback from the end user; the following is an excerpt from the PROJECT brief: “We started an intervention in Itereleng, an informal neighbourhood south of Laudium, Pretoria, this time with the approval from the community. This is part of a continuing process and the outcomes include enhancing and beautifying the neighbourhood through creating a public commuter space that will serve the community in different ways.

In total the covering will facilitate 75 taxis and their respective routes with 5 lanes in total incorporating inbound and outbound traffic.

The 5 rows will have platform/boarding areas adjacent lanes under the overhead plane. Bricks, concrete, corrugated sheets and steel are to be sponsored and were to be the only materials used. ablution facilities in the absence of a municipal sewer line will be...

facilitated for and will be built as a precast concrete septic tank. After careful evaluation 5 student projects were identified as the most suitable and diverse, to be presented to the client. from these 5, one was chosen to represent the b.arch 4th year design class, the institution of tut and ultimately the people of the itereleng community to whom it will belong. after dialogue with community leaders; ‘itereleng youth...

empowerment & support program’ secretary and representatives from the taxi association, it was understood Their preferences were foremost guided by practicality of taxi versus pedestrian movement and easy erection of the structures, but the rainwater catchment features of the roofs were the most appreciated. ultimately the chosen project was mine, of which I am proud.

MORNINGSIDE MANOR Sectional title development A New sectional title development PROPOSAL, consisting of twelve double storey townhouses each with DEDICATED SWIMMING POOLS aND private garden aS THE DRIVING REQUEST FROM THE CLIENT. THE CLIENT OF WHICH WAS THE PROCEED OF A FORMER COLLEAGUE WHO WAS UNABLE TO MAKE TIME FOR THE PROJECT. SEVERAL DISCUSSIONS WERE FOLLOWED BY A Successful STRATEGY TO FIT THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF UNITS ALLOWABLE WITHIN THE TIGHT PARAMETERS OF THE SLOPED SITE. THIS without detracting from the quality AND intimacy of the HOMES created. while the project did reach m u n i c i p a l a p p r o v a l, i t d i d n o t r e a c h c o n s t r u c t i o n d u e t o c l i e n t ’ s financial constraints. a very challenging and fortunate experience from which I learnt a great deal about actively taking a project from an appraisal and development level, to council approval ready.

it was my decision that of these three consecutive design projects situated on campus, an arrival precinct be the outcome that introduces new arrival conditions far less complicated and better defined than the existing. the requirements for the first project was the designof a long spanning roof

that could house a lecture hall. my solution was a multifunctional teaching center that acts as a visitor’s center and point of arrival. something notably absent upon my own first experience asking at every corner for information and direction.

MY CAMPUS STUDENT HOTEL as part of the series of 4th year projects based on campus, the brief was to design and situate where the argument was strongest for it’s occupation, a student hotel to which the public could also use as an affordable alternative. as the requirements were in line with the institution’s current directive for the campus to be more people friendly and engage more with the public domain, I proposed the new building be part of the new face of the campus, reflecting elements befitting of of a ‘technology’ region yet still in keeping of its heavy brutalistic environs. the decision was to open it up to light and free circulation with a central atrium. I proposed the existing hospitality school be accommodated for, as their current facilities on campus were lacking. this in turn serving the hotel symbiotically.

INITIAL concept SEED exploration

MY CAMPUS TUT A GATEWAY TYPOLOGY about TRANSITION and liminality Whilst acknowledging the brief arrival conditions, spaces of liminality and the transition between thresholds and their perceived identity. The design calls for a new arrival and access point typology for the campus of TUT in the form of gateways where one knows mentally and physically that they are arriving and consequently have arrived on their campus in an engaging way. This without detracting from the pedology of the 'University Institution' archetype.

The proposed new 'Arrival Gate Way' intervention (focusing here on the "West Gate' condition), responds to the vast geographical and psychological distance between arrival at the campus entrance and arriving into the campus itself, bridging the two and addressing the underlying need for the institution to establish a stronger identity in synergy with the scholars it serves. Importance is placed on the transition between spaces and the resultant thresholds, as the nature of an access/egress point in itself is a dialogue of crossing between zones and ones experience of being granted access can inadvertently serve to be empowering by virtues of its exclusivity.

The resulting spaces created in this context aim to accommodate and relate to the 'TUT' student, if only for a pause or a mental acknowledgement of the change in spacial experience that one now knows that they have 'crossed over' into another realm without physically opening a gate or door.

The driving design approach therefore, WAS to create a series of gateways by means of landscaped amphitheatres which serve different functions from transport interchange to public plaza to private courtyards of reflection and interaction, to bring the student into campus in a way that engages them with their environment making what was a route, a place. The conscious decision therefore was to elevate the status of the pedestrian, in the environment that is primarily designed for the automobile, and give them priority. This bridges the gap and brings the campus to the gate, as opposed to the student to the gate via a seemingly extensive journey.

As the need for a permeable but physical barrier remains in our climate of student unrest and protest, a manned guard house was designed for in an unobtrusive way as a constituent piece of the Gate Way intervention. This structure will stem from a long landscaped earth wall that rises from the ground taking advantage of the natural fall on site. It is offset to the perpendicular axis of travel as it sinks into the ground at one end and juts out above the Pretoria skyline presenting a steel TUT emblem proudly at the other. This forms the primary visual threshold as the student is led between a framed gateway at it's centre. Above this configuration, a seemingly suspended three dimensional bronze patina'd triangular form acts as a beacon and marker in space for the access point that students can relate to from afar invoking the memory of the gateway as the portal to their campus and the portal to a better life and brighter future.

This effect is facilitated by structural glass between the tectonic beacon and the stereotomic base below..

RHODES UNIVERSITY HERITAGE RESOURCE REVIEW A report compiled with bryan wintermeyer under his tutelage on behalf of urban designers piet louw and dave dewer.

UNDER THE TUTELAGE OF BRYAN WINTERMEYER AT THE WORKPLACE ARCHITECTS IN PORT ELIZABETH, WE COMPILED THIS REPORT TO SERVE AS A TOOL TO INFORM FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE RHODES UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN GRAHAMSTOWN. AFTER INITIAL DIALOGUE WITH DAVE DEWER AND PIET LOUW WE CONVERGED ON SITE WHERE I LEARNT A WEALTH OF INFORMATION WALKING THE CAMPUS, DECODING SPACIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND NARRATIVES WITH TWO OF SOUTH AFRICA’S STALWARTS IN TOWN PLANNING, URBAN AND INSTITUTIONAL DESIGN ALONG WITH THE THEN HERITAGE PRACTITIONER OF THE EASTERN CAPE. THE TASK was to document, map and categorize all elements of value towards the national estate for the purpose of their conservation. as such, this was a near mammoth task which saw my returning to sight several times with mr wintermeyer or a colleague to assist. with an apprehension to categorize and discern intrusive from valuable elements from the knowledge gained. it was a back and forth between collecting data on site for a day in one week, to liaising with the office in a legible way, documenting and compiling the greater report. while I do have my own concerns in relation to the conversation of ‘african heritage’ and what we have over the years hypothesized as culturally significant and having more value over another, this was none the less an empowering and privileged opportunity, from which I learnt a wealth of knowledge and stimulated further inquiry and reflection.

foster & partners Mclaren tech. center a technical exploration from pictures, of an existing building A Construction detailing project to produce a ‘Part Wall Section’ and details of an existing building from a given list of prominent architects. Assigned Norman Foster, I chose to detail the Mclaren Technology Centre extrapolated from readily available images online. These drawings were my own interpretation of how the building was constructed based off of knowledge gained at that point and how I ‘would have’ gone about it. On plan, the building is roughly semi-circular, the circle being completed by a formal lake in the midlands of Surrey which in turn forms an integral part of the buildings cooling system. The principal lakeside facade is a continuous curved glass and steel curtain wall facade, developed in part using McLarens own technology, and shaded by a cantilevered roof. Internally, the building is organised around doubleheight linear streets, which form circulation routes and articulate fingers of flexible accommodation. These house production and storage areas on the lower levels, with top-lit design studios, offices and suspended meeting rooms above.

A MODULAR REPEATABLE exhibition STAND pavilion for the showcase and display of products, merchandise AND INTERESTS in a creative manor. INTENDED TO BE EXPRESSIVE AND DIFFERENT to HEIGHTEN brand identity or market specific products, GAIN TRACTION TO INTERESTS ETC. The proposed design was to be lightweight and mobile. My approach was to create an interlockable living structure that opened and closed depending on the user’s need for shelter, mobility and quantity demand. The structure is mechanically operable via a series of hydraulic jacks, linked together with automation software that extends each jack the amount required to maintain structural integrity. THE BRIEF FOR THIS ACADEMIC EXERCISE CALLED FOR A DEBRIEF OF CURRENT SITUATIONS AT THE UNDERUSED HOLM JORDAAN ARCHITECTS DESIGNED GREENVIEW STATION AND A SUBSEQUENT SOLUTION TO IMPROVE CURRENT CONDITIONS OF ITS USABILITY. DUE TO VARIOUS POLITICAL AND GEOPOLITICAL FACTORS MANY OF THESE PRASA STATIONS STAND DERELICT, VANDALIZED AND UNDERUTILIZED. BY INTRODUCING A MORE HABITABLE ARRIVAL AND DECANT SPACE BY MEANS OF AN ACUPUNCTURE APPROACH TO THE GREATER ISSUE, I ENDEAVORED TO CREATE AN IDENTIFIABLE BEACON THAT YIELDS SENSE OF PLACE; OPPORTUNITY FOR PAUSE; SURVEILLANCE AND TRADE, A CATALYST TO ACTIVATE A SAFER DIALOGUE WITH ITS CONTEXT.

elliot ripper house scene reproduction a rendering exercise to reproduce an existing scene the program I chose to replicate a photorealistic impression of architect chris poly’s house was autodesk 3ds max with chaosgroup mentalray render engine plugin.the brief required a scene to be recreated from an original photograph of an existing building. The requirements of the existing scene where that it featured both natural and artificial lighting where the photograph was taken. The final output was to be a photorealistic rendering, or ‘artists impression’. Following my then typical workflow, I began with Autocad for initial drafting and scale acquisition. Thereafter I modeled the portion of the building involved with the scene in Revit, before importing, tweeking and rendering in ‘3ds Max’ for final production.

Such workflow has since been adjusted with the tools of today’s “paperless” office and efficiencies of realtime rendering programs

kua man conceptual africa burn flaming tribute IN SOUTHERN AFRICA, THE ‘BUSHMAN’ REFER TO THEMSELVES AS THE KUA. THESE ARE THE INDIGENOUS DENIZENS OF THE SOILS THAT ARE VISITED ANNUALLY IN THE TANKWA KAROO, FOR A FESTIVAL WHERE A TEMPORARY EXPRESSIVE STRUCTURE IS BURNT AT IT’S EPOCH. MY CONCEPT FOR THE BURN TRIBUTE IS A STORY ABOUT IT’S ERSTWHILE ROAMING INHABITANTS. Design TO BE CUT FROM EIGHT PLYWOOD SHEETS WITH MINIMAL WASTAGE. A METAL HEART STANDS AT THE CENTER WHICH WILL NOT BURN BUT GLOW ALIVE WHILST EVERYTHING AROUND IT burns & crumbles. A didactic HOMAGE TO THE archaic PEOPLE AND an opportune METAPHOR FOR LIFE’S CHALLENGES.

SPANDAUSKOP - BIRD HIDE A SELF SUSTAINING ORNITHOLOGICAL RESEARCH OUTPOST

The brief required the design of a temporary bird research station in the Spandauskop ‘Valley of Desolation’ outside the town of Graaf Reinet in the Eastern Cape Karoo. It was to be a self sustaining off grid solution manned by a single researcher for months at a time in the survival module esque structure.

The hide needed to blend into its environment and use means of passive energy and heating and cooling. It also needed to be a visual filter ( glare) and as means to blend and o b s c u r e h u m a n p r e s e n c e .

inner city work hub a sustainable multipurpose office building

a multi functional office building in the heart of Port Elizabeth. The brief called for a rethink of the modern office and offers opportunity to have different tiers vertically which cater to modern businesses and young entrepreneurs.

The concept of mixing predominantly open plan office space with leasable ‘hot desks’ yields a different dynamic to that of the traditional office. Full height atriums are introduced creating the micro climate which stacks air, allows ventilation and natural daylight throughout the envelope.

Wind turbines are employed to capitalize on the building’s geographic orientation, and Port Elizabeth’s windy climate.
