MAKE THE MOVE TO
City comforts combine with rural tranquility in the Village of Carp, making it a perfect place to live for people of many ages and interests. Located in West Carleton, the western-most ward of Ottawa, Carp is about 10 kilometres west of Kanata, thus a short drive away from all the amenities, features and activities that city-life offers. However, with Carp’s growing business community, including a second-to-none Saturday farmers’ market and wide variety of restaurants and shops, rich rural history, and many services and amenities, parks, playgrounds and entertainment opportunities, you’ll find all that you need in and around the village. Carp’s population in 2012 was estimated to be approximately 2,000.
The village sits on the edge of the Carp Escarpment (or Carp Ridge), which is a geological fault running through the Carp River Valley. The Carp Hills and the Carp River are other principal geographic characteristics of the village terrain. Families considering a move to Carp will be pleased to know there are several child care and school options. Carp Co-Operative Nursery School is located at 3774 Carp Rd. Huntley Centennial School can be found at 118 Langstaff Dr. and St. Michael Corkery is located at 1572 Corkery Rd. There’s also a variety of churches, including the Parish of Huntley Anglican Church, St. Paul’s United Church and West Carleton Community Church.

OCTranspo offers a weekly, free bus service from Carp to Bayshore, Lincoln Fields, and Carlingwood shopping centres. The Carp branch of the Ottawa Public Library can be found at 3911 Carp Rd. There is a variety of services on offer, including book lending, wireless internet access, second-hand book sales, Ipad and Chromebook rentals, scanner access, a wealth of programming and more. Carp is also an ideal place to retire. The Carp Commons Retirement Village is a multi-storey ‘retirement campus’ located in the centre of the village. It opened its doors in March, 2019. The centre is being actively promoted with the byline “Retire in Carp” and is located within walking distance to new shops, dining, and services.
Recreational opportunities abound. Park and recreation facilities within the village include the W. Erskine Johnston Arena at 3832 Carp Rd. – which includes the arena, splash pad, softball and baseball diamonds, tennis courts, play structure and the Huntley Community Centre and Huntley Curling Club; Agricultural Society Land (adjacent arena site, the barn - during the winter months – the ice surface is used by the hockey club); Diefenbunker Site/CFS Carp; Huntley Mess Hall which includes the community centre and baseball diamond and the Langstaff Soccer Fields.
Since the 1800s, the village has been a major centre for agricultural activities. The Carp Agricultural Society and the annual Carp Agricultural Fair date back to 1863. The Carp Fair, marking its 156th year in 2019, draws visitors and participants from all over. The Carp Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday from April/May to October on the southern part of the fairgrounds and attracts regular visitors from Ottawa and many of the towns and communities around Carp.
Located a short distance from the Carp Fairgrounds is the other well-known feature of Carp, the Diefenbunker, built in the 1960s to house the principals of the federal government in the event of a The village is surrounded by a wealth of biking, hiking, walking, and nuclear attack on Ottawa. snowmobiling trails, which connect to hundreds of miles of trails With all this on offer, how can you not consider making Carp not that run across the Ottawa valley. only a place to visit, but a place to make your home. environment and so much to look at, you won’t be disappointed. Pop in any time you’re in the area - everyone loves the cabin!” says owner Diana Fuller.
“We have a number of local artisans, new items, gift items, collections, paint and repurpose classes. With a welcome
On offer is a wide variety of items to outfit your lodge or cabin – or bring that cottage feel home. CARP BIA | 5
“The Cabin came to fruition because my husband and I were building a home and we were both so busy that we weren’t able to get up to the cottage,” says Fuller. “The one thing we really liked was that outdoor vibe.” As they searched for items, they realized they couldn’t find what they were looking for all in one place. Fuller, who also owns MacLean & Associates at The Hive, enjoys merchandise – buying, setting up, marketing. “We travelled all over upstate New York looking for certain pieces that would go in our ‘lodge,’” says Fuller. At The Cabin, there’s a focus on keeping things local as much as possible but the hunt for unique and treasured stock requires crossing borders.
“We’ve got a handmade little clay cabin that is an incense burner – made in Santa Fe, New Mexico,” says Fuller. “You can’t get that anywhere else.” Among the popular items at The Carp Cabin are decorative lamps and handwoven blankets. “We’ve set it up to offer people who want that cottage vibe and might not be able to get away,” she added. “They can pick up things that will help them to relax and feel comfortable in their own homes.” Customers rave about their experience. “Everybody loves it. We have a guest book that people sign and everybody comments on how unique and interesting it is,” says Fuller. “The Cabin itself is quite eclectic – the vibe, the smells – we try to rally make it cottage and cabin-like.” Friends are made at The Cabin. “People come and stay, have a cup of coffee and some cookies – it’s a destination.” The Carp Cabin is located at 211 Donald B. Munro Dr., Carp. Find out more at carpcabin.ca .

MacLean & Associates Inc., owned by Diana Fuller, is located on the main level and offers Canadian and locally made items including unique designer handmade talisman jewelry by “Pyrrah”, local artisan bracelets by “Wrist Joy”, and Make A Wish bracelets infused with Reiki vibes by “Eleven Love”. There are also holistic hand forged, handmade small batch items from the Tofino Soap Co.

Although Marilyn Rose cuts all textures of hair, she specializes in enhancing the potential of curly hair and also offers image consulting services to help you find your style.
Eco-friendly items can be found, like the popular Hinza Bag from Sweden, which is a multi-use, multi-purpose tote made with sugar cane. Also available are cards, gift and decor items for your home, including an assortment of antiques, vintage and mid-century modern furniture, and lighting. The second floor is home to Bee You Creative Styles, which offers unique consignment clothing for ladies, men and children. Jess, the owner, is always in the shop. “Bee You” is not just a fun name, its meaning has roots in every positive reason to buy used and local. Saving our bees is just the beginning. We can all make a difference, one piece of clothing at a time. The Hive in Carp has been in the community for about six years. “The location has undergone a transformation recently and we have a new and exciting vibe”, explains MacLean & Associates owner, Diana Fuller. The new clean design has been well received by all who drop in. “It’s an eclectic mix – we offer a little bit of everything for the community and visitors alike. Most often, people are surprised at the quick changeover of inventory – every time they come in there’s something new and different”. To say life is hectic for Fuller would be an understatement, but she thrives on the full schedule. “My business model is very different. I am one of the top 5% of women owned auction houses in Canada, MacLean & Associates Inc. is Ottawa’s auction house. I’m a licensed auctioneer and personal property appraiser for all major trust companies, with a senior downsizing division, and consignment division, which includes The Carp Cabin and The Hive in Carp. The Village of
Carp is an ideal place in which to do business. More and more people are coming to Carp to live. The community has been so supportive. It has been wonderful meeting new residents along with many guests to our quaint village. I enjoy seeing our clients happy with the products we have hand-picked for our shops,” says Fuller. “It has been exciting to see The Hive evolve over the last year and a half ”. Patrons will notice that there’s a certain focus to the items. “We enjoy working with companies that have a conscience; eco-conscious, holistic, handmade and fair-trade products. It’s important to offer the eco-friendly products not only for our community, but for our world. A lot of the time people don’t know where to start or what to do. A multiuse or reusable product instead of a single use product is a great start. I love sourcing out interesting products and offering unique items”, says Fuller. Clients vary from life-long residents, to newbies, to visitors just passing through. “We have had visitors from all over the world! Through our online shop we have shipped items across Canada and overseas, all from our quaint village of Carp”. The Hive is located at 3775 Carp Rd. More info is available at www.thehiveincarp.ca

Syntax Strategic DOING BIG BUSINESS FROM A SMALL VILLAGE There’s something to be said about infusing a small-town feel into a national business mandate. Those who live and work in the Village of Carp bring a strong sense of community; principled, valuebased approaches to how they do business and serve their clients and Syntax Strategic is no exception. Led by founder and CEO Jennifer Stewart, Syntax Strategic is a strategic communications powerhouse representing local and national clients alike; where communication meets business strategy. Born of a desire to work with compelling clients looking for highquality support while ensuring happy-quality of life for herself and her team, Stewart designed a one-stop shop for communications in the heart of the Village of Carp. Syntax is proof that you don’t have to live and work in the downtown core to deliver meaningful results. “Building my shop in Carp made the most sense for my family. We are a kilometre away from home, work and school – but my team and I can be downtown to meet a client within 30 minutes,” she says.
18 | CARP BIA
“Syntax is changing the way we view the traditional workplace”, says Stewart. “Some call it work-life balance, others work-life harmony, I call it “getting with the times”.” Syntax offers a dynamic work environment, embraces shorter commutes, offers remote work solutions, and personal wellness incentives, all while creating a positive, team-centric approach where success isn’t measured by hours spent in a chair but by the quality of the work delivered. “We have walking meetings around the village; we take in the agricultural scenery. We have meetings at Alice’s and at Ridge Rock – we have everything we need to operate. There’s a lot to offer,” says Stewart. Stewart’s approach has attracted some of Ottawa’s best local talent to her boutique style firm that prides itself on delivering big impact to all its clients. Syntax’s specialities have rounded out over the years as its team of experts has expanded. From strategy development to execution, Syntax provides communications services in a variety of areas
including content and editorial writing, advocacy, marketing, digital & social media, graphic design, public relations, media training and crisis communications. Representing Syntax are Director of Media and Communications Alyson Fair, Director of Brand and Marketing Dana Telfer, Director of Strategy, Michelle Coates Mather, Senior Digital Media Strategist and Graphic Designer Kayla Bryant, Communication Strategist Kristi Aruja and Operations Manager Devon Larock. Ottawa Valley Grain Products PROUDLY SERVING SINCE 1929
“WE BELIEVE IN TREATING OUR CUSTOMERS LIKE FAMILY” Ottawa Valley Grain Products is a fourth-generation custom grain mill in Carp that uses classic milling techniques, stones and screens, to mill and grind products. “We understand the value of integrity, hard work, loyalty, and of course, quality product. Our approach is far from

mainstream. Each order is custom milled to the specifications of our customers. We source grain from farms in and around the Ottawa Valley, and often, directly from the farmers themselves,” says OVGP’s Kevin Stewart.
By sourcing only all-natural grain products, OVGP remains true to its heritage of providing nutritious and wholesome grains to customers. Our flours are also made with 100% whole grains, where nothing is added, and nothing taken away. The company is firmly immersed into the community, says Stewart. “Ottawa Valley Grain Products is extremely integrated into the Village of Carp and the broader Ottawa Valley community,” he says. “We really value our relationships with local farmers, which allows us to bring local food to dinner tables all across Canada.”

OVPG’s nearly 90 years of milling experience, combined with a hands-on approach, ensures that clients are provided with consistent, all-natural, high-quality whole grain products. The use of classic methods is a throw-back to days of old, but the company has adapted and innovated over the years. Today, OVGP supplies its grain to dozens of suppliers, that in turn supply many local and national grocery stores. “We’re taking simple raw materials and turning it into simple food,” says Stewart. “In some cases, we’re growing it, milling it and selling it all within kilometres of the office.” Experience, and people are key to success. “Our longest standing employee has been with us for 30 years. When he tells me ‘Hey, this is good’ I know it’s good,” says Stewart. “It’s not computers doing the milling, it’s the millers, who are hands-on every step of the process.” His message to the public? “We’re here, we’re growing – consider working with us,” he says. “We’re always actively looking for farms, big and small, to grow for us...Local is how we roll.” Ottawa Valley Grain Products is located at 405 Donald B. Munro Drive in Carp. Call 613-839-2802 or email operations@ovgp.ca . Stop in and try out some of our products. Office hours are Monday – Friday 8 am to 4 pm.
