TRAVEL DESIGN TIPS

The change of season is a great time to breathe new life into your home’s design. What better way to update the personal touches around your living space than with travel-inspired souvenirs and mementos from vacations past? Whether you have a box of collected items from

cities around the world, old memories saved on the camera roll, or a shell from your favorite beach, we’ve got eight tips on how to best incorporate your favorite travels into everyday home design.

1

TIP

BRING THE BEACH TO YOUR HOME.

Many of us long for extra days with our toes in the sand, enjoying the sights, smells, and sounds of the ocean. Summer is the perfect time to incorporate aquatic designs, colors, and collectibles into your home, whether you’re living in a beachfront property or an urban complex. Crafting beach-inspired centerpieces for the dining room, living room, and bathroom can be a beautiful way to use sand, shells, starfish, sand dollars, and other natural finds from your coastal getaways. In the dining room, create an ocean-themed centerpiece using a common household tray or a large, shallow glass bowl. Place a layer of sand in the bottom to add depth, and layer in smaller shells with larger items like sand dollars, starfish, and tulip shells on top. Similarly, you can use any remaining beach finds to dress up your mantel or bathroom counter with a DIY creation. For a more permanent fixture to pair with seaside arrangements, upgrade your floors to luxury vinyl tile or planks. Texturized vinyl floors closely resemble natural wood and provide waterproof features for sandy, beachlike wood aesthetics in living and dining areas. Complement dining room tables and wood-look floors with textiles that use oceaninspired blues and sand-like neutrals such as area rugs and table runners.

ARTISTICALLY ADORN YOUR WALLS.

Hanging unique travel art and destination photography is one of the easiest ways to incorporate vacation memories into the home. From postcards and Polaroids to wall art and maps, there are many design options to show off your favorite places. For a vintage aesthetic, a beautiful way to make a statement is to hang small Polaroids from string or yarn, like a clothesline. Attach the string safely to your wall and incorporate hanging lights for added effect. This trend has made its way from college dorms to urban flats and has become popular in contemporary home design. For those who prefer a more traditional route, frame and hang any destination artwork, postcards, or personal photos that you’ve taken from your trip.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 15

TRAVEL DESIGN TIPS

TIP

3

MAP OUT YOUR TRAVELS.

A thoughtful way to visually represent multiple trips in one design, travel maps are an increasingly popular trend across generations. Local and global maps displayed throughout your home are a fantastic way to showcase destinations you’ve visited. Purchase a personalized global map and add pins to wherever you’ve been in the world. Alternatively, “scratch maps” can be found in most souvenir stores, offering affordability and beauty when framed. Browse DIY shopping sites to find specialty maps with wood frames for tasteful charm. This popular form of wall art adds the perfect touch to a home office, study, or library. Local maps from places you’ve visited are also great forms of artwork to reminisce and inspire.

USE EXOTIC AROMAS AS COMPLEMENTARY DECOR.

4

TIP

When people think of the many ways to complement their existing interior design, aromas and spices aren’t typically the first things that come to mind. Culinary travel is a popular form of tourism that allows us to dive deeper into the food, beverages, and other gastronomic delights that different regions and cultures have to offer. Think about the various foodie items you’ve brought home that could enliven your kitchen or dining space: ground coffee from Costa Rica, spiced chai from bustling London, mulling spices from a Bavarian village—even a handpoured candle from a restaurateur. These common items are fabulous examples of souvenirs we can display, smell, and often consume from our travels. For an organic look, easily display your spices, teas, and coffees in decorative mason jars or a spice rack with vials. 16

DRESS UP FURNISHINGS WITH TEXTILES AND PILLOWS.

Just because the warmer weather has arrived doesn’t mean you have to stow away your cozy blankets for the season. Dress up your home with textiles, blankets, and pillows from your favorite trips to incorporate local designs from other regions, countries, and continents. Highly texturized blankets and eye-popping decorative pillows are a great way to complement neutral furnishings and wall colors. Draping your blanket over a corner of your couch is a stylish way to show off a splash of color, even if the summer heat is enough to keep you warm. Textiles such as area rugs and window treatments are always an easy way to bring your favorite memories into the home. Handwoven area rugs can nicely complement smaller spaces like entryways and hallways, incorporating regional artistry into specific parts of your home. Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 17

TRAVEL DESIGN TIPS

TIP

6

INCORPORATE LITERATURE IN ANY ROOM.

Many travelers find their carry-ons brimming with books and magazines for an enjoyable beach read during their stay. If you find yourself returning home with more books than you left with, easily organize travel reads into a neat display. Travel novels, destination guides, and regional cookbooks are all great examples of books that look great in the kitchen, on your coffee table, or front and center on a bookshelf. Stacking a few travel books on your coffee table may sound too easy to count as design. But topping your stack with a photo, candle, or artistic book weight can easily transform a pile of books into a scenic display. For a truly foodie kitchen, organize your destination cookbooks in a designated section, such as a small nook, a shelf, or even a corner of your kitchen countertop. Arranging cookware, spices, and jars of olive oil around your cookbooks will give the display an immersive feeling of belonging in your kitchen. If you already have a large bookshelf dedicated to literature, consider creating a small section with travel-themed works. Including tiny souvenirs around these books will pull together a complete travel section of your house while providing a space for small knickknacks like magnets, pins, shot glasses, and snow globes. Design by SARA BEDERMAN Photography by STEPHANI BUCHMAN

EMBRACE HANDMADE ARTISTRY THROUGHOUT YOUR HOME.

From clay-sculpted vases to ceramic bowls and even glassblown objects, there are numerous ways to incorporate handmade artistry from your travels into your home. Embracing handmade souvenirs is a way to support local businesses while adding design elements that are 100 percent unique and original. Ceramics and pottery from around the world can be placed by the hearth or an entertainment center for depth, character, and a splash of color. Incorporating claycrafted vases and pots with faux or natural greenery is not only a stunning way to display your souvenirs but also adds natural, earthy tones to your home. Many handmade crafts such as wind chimes, birdhouses, and lanterns can also complement outdoor spaces like a screened lanai or patio area. 18

TACKLE LARGER HOME RENOVATIONS FOR A PERSONAL OASIS.

If you’re considering larger home renovations or drafting the blueprints for a brand-new home, seize the opportunity to incorporate resort features and craft your own personal oasis. Turn your master bathroom into a home spa with a detached Japanese tub. This luxurious bathroom commodity is all about inner reflection, meditation, and a seamless blend of nature and home through modern and unusual architecture. Including slate or granite bath tile, ferns, bamboo, and other forms of greenery and natural light will put the finishing touches on a truly Zen bathroom spa experience. If your master bathroom is on the ground level, this presents a perfect opportunity to include a sliding glass door to easily view and access your outdoor space. When planning exterior elements for an at-home paradise, consider your favorite hobbies and activities. Building an outdoor firepit securely with brick masonry and large wooden lawn chairs gives the appearance of stylish, intentional planning as opposed to beach chairs surrounding a transportable fire pit. If your home includes an in-ground pool, add some old-world charm with a stone waterfall inspired by renaissance water fountains from Italian cityscapes. The inclusion of a waterfall pleases the senses visually and audibly with the continuous white noise of flowing water. Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 19

MODERN LUXURY BEDROOMS Take advantage of the floor space in your bedroom and install a luxuriously soft bed. Whether you have a California king or a simple queen, investing in high-thread-count linens, a quality mattress, and plenty of

pillows will elevate your space. Balance out pops of color with a neutral-toned hardwood and add a cozy area rug to complete the look.

SPA ELEMENTS IN THE BATHROOM A trend that has certainly picked up this year is updating master baths with spa design elements.

Upgrade your bathroom with pieces that inspire relaxation and small moments of peace. Whether you’re thinking about a full remodel with a freestanding soaking tub and a floating marble vanity or smaller updates like a copper faucet and tile backsplash, don’t forget the little touches. Small details are everything, so pay attention to light fixtures, greenery, bath mats, and paint colors. Design by DIANA ROSE Photography by MIKE CHAJECKI Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 23

OUTDOOR SHOWERS Perfect for your summer cottage or lake home, outdoor showers add an element of serenity when it comes to your morning routine. Plus, outdoor showers make for great spaces to

rinse off when you’re just getting in from a day of sand and fun at the beach or when you’re washing up after an afternoon of weeding the garden. Design by LAURA HAY Photography by LISA PETROLE

RESTAURANT-STYLE DINING There’s nothing better than sharing a home-cooked meal with friends and family. Transform your dining

room into a gorgeous gathering place by adding a large table with cozy chairs. Make an existing fireplace

the focal point, or install a unique chandelier to add character. After eating, the fun doesn’t need to stop—a comfortable dining room can transform into a sitting area or game room for continued family time. Design by HIBOU DESIGN + CO Photography by DREW HADLEY

OPEN-AIR LIVING The popularity of open-air living has grown extensively over the past few years as people look to seamlessly

blend their indoor and outdoor spaces. The simple joy of transitioning your activities outdoors on a sunny day

is made easy with modern glass door designs. Think about installing waterproof tile or luxury vinyl floors near your double glass doors that lead from your dining area out to the backyard. You won’t regret doubling your entertainment space with an outdoor kitchen or a blended lounge space.

A TOWNHOME

RENOVATION Photography by ZACH CORNWELL

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 27

Q&A

Q: A:

Q: A:

28

Tell us a little bit about your client’s needs for this townhome renovation.

Our client was a first-time homeowner for this place, and as such, she wanted to bring her personality into it. To do this, we needed to get to know our client—her likes, her passions, and so on. It turns out that our client loves the outdoors, nature, and traveling. Our design incorporated these aspects of her life.

This is a small space. What are your initial thoughts when approaching a design that has a smaller square footage? We are laser focused on functionality. We need to understand what is a priority for the client and what is not. Prior to designing the space, we try to gain a good understanding of the place’s workflow. Once that is done, we then add the aesthetic elements to the design. To achieve this level of knowledge, we ask a lot of questions about how the client functions in her space.

Q:

Wallpaper is really hot right now, and we love the way you’ve used it in the powder room. Often, decorating with wallpaper can be tricky. How do you approach designing with wallpaper, especially in a small room such as a bathroom?

A:

We believe the powder bathroom is a perfect space to design with wallpapers because the powder bath on its own can often be a great place to make a bold design statement. In general, wallpapers offer an incredible option to complement design features. They can also be the focal point of a room. Wallpapers are a great tool in your designer’s toolbox.

Q:

Color is used liberally throughout the rooms in this space. How do you feel color plays an important factor in interior design, and what colors do you recommend using together?

A:

Our design approach to a space always becomes personal because we love to understand our client’s vision and how they see themselves in their space long after the design is done. In our mind, colors reflect personality, vision, and desires from a client standpoint. Colors are a function of what the client wants, and they may vary from combinations of orange and greens to neutral tones to bolder shades. This client is super nice, incredibly polite, and fun. She loves nature activities like hiking, canoeing, and being in open spaces. Our client has also traveled a lot to South America to countries like Peru and Chile. The colors chosen for this design reflect all this and include natural, earthy tones with a pop of color here and there. We love how it turned out, but more importantly, we love that the client is so happy with her place.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 29

Q&A

30

Q:

The honey-hued hardwood floors in this design are beautiful and have a charming, old-world appeal. Were these original to the architecture of the place?

A:

They are lovely indeed, and they were original to the architecture of the place, which facilitated the blend of colors and elements of our interior design.

GET THE LOOK! Check out this flooring style to create a similarly stunning design in your home! WATERPROOF HONEYED WOOD-LOOK Luxury Vinyl available at Carpet One Floor & Home

Q:

There are many wooden objects tied into this space, from the light hardwood floors and airy dining chairs to the rich espresso dining table and dark wooden bookcase—but they all form a cohesively beautiful space. What are your top tips for successfully blending natural elements together?

A:

These design processes are very personal. When there is a direct connection with the client and the client is not afraid of using patterns, combining colors, and mixing natural elements, then creative juices flow and the magic happens. A top tip for designs like these is to look for the flow of lines along the combination of different components to see how they mix and match with each other.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 31

Q&A

32

Q:

There are some really unique pieces in this space, including the wall tapestry and the woven basket in the living room. How do you draw design inspiration from artwork and one-of-a-kind artifacts?

A:

Our client is well-traveled, especially to Peru, Chile, and other places in South America. As such, she had a rich portfolio of artwork that needed to be incorporated into the design. Our colors and overall material selection considered these pieces of art right from the start. We too love to travel. Traveling does many things for your soul, one of which is to give you a different perspective on life. It also makes for a good source of inspiration.

Q:

We love the entryway table setup. What are some top design tips for making a good first impression with your foyer?

A:

We believe mixing and matching different materials, elements, and colors can offer the opportunity to create an area or design that will stand out, particularly for spaces where you want to make the first impression last longer in a positive manner.

Q:

We noticed there’s a lot of different lighting throughout the space, from the overhead fan to the lamps to the tea light candles on the dining room table. How did you approach lighting when it came to this design?

A:

Interior design incorporates so many different aspects that are equally important. Lighting cannot be isolated from colors, other materials, artwork, furniture, or wallpaper. We believe lighting can add to the harmony and cohesiveness of a design because it can—and should—highlight certain features of the interior design and the overall personality of the space when required. Our lighting design for this and any other design is based on this approach.

FLOORING for Your New House or Vacation Home

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 43

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FLOORING

The pandemic encouraged many of us to think

long and hard about where we live and how our environment shapes us. As people moved out of the cities in search of more space and room to grow, the housing market saw a big boom.

Many undiscovered rural towns and vacation destinations saw their tourist traffic pick up

and their property prices rise as families looked to purchase homes away from crowded urban

centers, and some even built a second place at their favorite getaway spot.

Maybe you’ve hopped on board this trend and recently bought that seacoast vacation home

your family has had their eyes on. Or maybe

you’ve seen this uptick in the housing market as

an opportunity to sell your condo in the city and

relocate to a house on the outskirts of town. While designing a new home or a vacation spot can be a

hassle, finding the perfect floors to fit your family’s lifestyle shouldn’t have to be!

Most likely, if you have a big family full of kids

and pets, you’ll be needing mess-proof floors that can handle dripping swimsuits and muddy paw

prints. As important as it is to have beautiful floors in your home, you should also be able to strike a good balance between quality and affordability.

That’s what many of our family-friendly flooring

products at Carpet One Floor & Home aim to do.

Make Bath Time a Cinch with Waterproof Floors Chances are you already have waterproof flooring installed in your bathroom—but is your flooring slip-proof

and durable too? Often, tile is a top contender for the

bathroom because it’s naturally waterproof and known for its strength. While tile is a great

choice, be careful to choose a tile that’s not too high gloss

for your home as these tend

to get slippery when wet and

you don’t want it to cause any accidents.

Plus, if you’ve purchased a

place near the beach, chances are you’re going to see a lot of wet swimsuits and sand

dragged into your bathroom this summer, so be sure you

install a floor that’s capable of handling those extra outdoor elements that often creep in.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 45

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FLOORING

“If you’re thinking about installing hardwood throughout your family’s home, consider engineered hardwood—designed to maximize the natural strength of the characteristics of wood.”

Protect Against Messy Shoes Authentic hardwood flooring has a timeless appeal with its unique grain patterning and historical

charm, so it’s no wonder you often find hardwood floors in grand foyers or entryways—they make

a good first impression! If you’re thinking about installing hardwood throughout your family’s

home, consider engineered hardwood—designed to maximize the natural strength of the characteristics of wood. Whether you’re running in from the lake or hauling camp gear out to the car, it’s important to invest in a floor like engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl that’s able to withstand the test of time.

If you have little ones who are more prone to slips or accidents, opt for flooring solutions that can

cushion their fall. Luxury vinyl and laminate are

softer options for the entryway of your home, and

their built-in stain and fade resistance can still hold up to your household’s tough demands. 46

Spill-Proof Floors for Culinary Adventures From Friday night dinner

experiments to Saturday morning pancake mixing, it’s safe to

say your kitchen floors may

see a lot of spilled ingredients

and culinary mishaps. But that

doesn’t mean you need to spend all your free time cleaning. Find a floor that’s both

waterproof and stainproof, like

luxury vinyl or tile. Luxury vinyl has the benefit of mimicking natural hardwood or stone

while being more comfortable

underfoot, so if you’re a master chef and plan on using your

kitchen often, luxury vinyl might just be the perfect fit for you!

Carpet That Can Do It All When it comes to the cozy, comfortable areas of your home, what flooring should you choose? Whether you’re looking to add a plush carpet in the family room

or hoping to install a fun print in your child’s bedroom, the good news is there

is a carpet that can do it all. Recent advancements to fiber technology and stain resistance have made it possible for carpets to fight off the popsicle stains and protect against juice spills—all while providing a soft place to land.

Airy, light, and beautiful, interiors designed to mimic the ocean and coastal

landscapes bring a calming atmosphere to any home. There’s nothing quite like a

trip to the beach full of fun and sunshine, so why not bring some of those colorful memories home with you in your interior design? Take your inspiration from the

cool blue ocean waves and the warm sunshine to create the ultimate oasis that is both comfortable and soothing.

Coastal-inspired design is known for its laid-back, chic look. It allows you to take the ambiance of a beautiful seaside retreat and bring it into your home through colors, textures, patterns, and designs. Neutral colors form the basis for this style with the

occasional pop of a vibrant hue. Using this design style to bring comfort to your home will always remind you of your most cherished summer moments.

Cozy carpets are a staple for any home with their design versatility and built-in

comfort. And what better way to bring the peace and tranquility of coastal waters

to your home than by installing the most comfortable type of flooring? Even adding an area rug to your living room or bedroom can accent your decor with luxurious texture or bold patterns. Carpets and area rugs are the coziest of flooring types, offering natural cushiness that brings a sense of serenity to your home.

CREATING A LAID-BACK LIVING SPACE WITH CARPET

When you go on vacation to your favorite beach, you expect to be able to

relax and have a good time. Why not bring that feeling home with you? The first step in creating a laid-back living space is to incorporate elements that

offer comfort. You can do this by starting from the ground up and building a simple foundation. When you want to bring the sun-warmed sands into your space, consider starting with a beautiful new carpet. To create an

informal, casual look with your carpet, you’ll want to go for soft textures. You can do this by installing carpeting that offers a longer cut pile, such as a frieze carpet. Carpeting that is plush and textured can look as if it’s

emulating natural patterns like waves in the water or grooves in the sand.

DECORATING WITH INSPIRED AREA RUGS

Area rugs create another layer of color and texture in your home,

and there are so many types to choose from! From colorful accent rugs to runners and entryway rugs, you can’t go wrong. Before

selecting which area rug you want in your space, it’s important to determine what size the rug should be. Consider the size of your

space, the foot traffic in that space, and what type of activities will be taking place in the space where you’re planning to install the

area rug. Whether you’re looking for an area rug for your bedroom, hallway, living room, or foyer, the selection is endless.

When you choose the right color carpet

of your whole space. When it comes to

add some color and brighten up your

or area rug, you elevate the aesthetic

a coastal-inspired color palette, choose calming hues inspired by sunny days spent at the shore so you can obtain

that beachy feeling. Traditionally, soft beachy blues, deep sea navies, and

warm sandy taupes have been used in many coastal designs.

If you are looking for a bolder approach, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color. 58

golden area rug in your space. This will room. Other color choices that match the coastal theme are crisp white, seafoam green, coral pink, and turquoise blue. Regardless of your choice, the best

color palette for beach-like flooring is

typically light and calming with neutral tones and just a touch of darker hues.

ACCENTING WITH PATTERNS AND TEXTURES

Incorporating patterns and textures in your decorating scheme doesn’t have to be intimidating. Generally, when layering patterns and textures, it’s best to combine prints that are different colors or scales. Ideally, in most design spaces, the most

prominent pattern in the room is typically an area rug that helps set the tone for the rest of the space and adds a layer of either a complementary or contrasting pattern.

Because being at the beach is all about feeling the sand between your toes, it is

important to consider the sensations you experience at the beach and try to apply them to the textures or patterns you add to your space. Bringing in bits of natural beauty can help you conceptualize a beach aesthetic in your home. For textures,

consider woven area rugs made with natural fibers such as jute, sisal, cotton, and linen. Natural fibers will help create a beachier feel. For patterns, be sure to find textural ones that are visually appealing and bring your space to life. Nautical

motifs like anchors, boats, waves, or palm fronds can be just the touch of texture your interior needs. If you’re looking for something simpler or more subtle, consider stripes or chevron patterns in cheerful colors. WAVERLY SUN N’ SHADE IN NAVY BY NOURISON

small packages

Written by TRISHA ISABEY Design by ISABEY INTERIORS Photography by TREVOR COOPER

60

Urban living can be a bit of a trade-off (or, depending on how you look at it, a big tradeoff). Whereas the suburbs are commonly known for larger homes and properties at a lower price, urban dwellings offer the convenience, community, and flair of a downtown address. Many will gladly sacrifice one for the other, but I’m here to tell you that you can have your cake and eat it too. From an interior design perspective, there are ways to make a small space appear larger; as they say, perception is everything. Here are three tips to achieve an artful compromise without sacrifice and live large in your small home.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 61

URBAN LIVING

Maximize the light and view. It’s amazing what a few windows can do, and thankfully for downtown dwellers, many newer city condos feature window walls and openconcept floor plans that make the most of their two best features: the light and the views. This urban condo my team recently designed features wide expanses of glass and breathtaking views that became an instant focal point for us. In small spaces like this one, a great view can help draw the eye out toward the horizon to create the illusion of more space within the suite. We made the view one of our key focal points by positioning the sitting area so it faces the windows and leaves unobstructed views across the entire suite. You can literally sit and enjoy the view from any point within this main living area. The second maximizing element we’ll touch on is light. Natural light is a small room’s best friend, making it appear bigger, brighter, and airier. If privacy isn’t a concern, consider leaving windows uncovered to make the most of the daylight. If you want to shut out the world when the sun goes down, get some retractable blinds or streamlined blackout curtains that can be pulled out of sight by day or drawn on demand at night. To help amplify the effects of natural light, opt for bright, neutral colors, which are more reflective than their darker, deeper color counterparts. Use light colors on everything that occupies a big visual snapshot in your space—for example, your wall paint, rugs, and large-scale furniture such as a sectional. Or take it a step further and choose a few furnishings and accessories that are actually reflective, such as a large mirror, mirrored and polished chrome furniture, and high-polished finishes that bounce light around the room. If natural light is hard to come by in your space, ensure you have ample and evenly distributed ambient lighting. Ambient light is the general lighting in the room and is meant to mimic daylight. If your room lacks windows, consider adding extra pot lights or ceiling-mounted fixtures, table or floor lamps, and accent lighting to highlight the home’s best features. Then add plenty of mirrors and reflective elements to visually double the light you’ve just created and trick the eye into seeing double the space.

62

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 63

URBAN LIVING

Streamline with built-ins. Furniture typically occupies precious floor space, and having too many furnishings—even if you consider them essential—can quickly make a room feel a lot smaller. Given the option, I always recommend built-ins for small spaces for two reasons. First of all, built-ins often come in the form of bookcases, cabinets, and shelves, which are great storage systems that can be concealed behind doors or panels, if desired. They are also a great way to display collections and

64

select items. Second, because these furnishings are integrated into the plans of the home as opposed to addons, they become part of the home, blending in and even disappearing entirely. In my professional experience, these design features are usually highly coveted items, and if they’re not included in the home design, they are often included later in the quest for a dream home.

tip:

I personally love using built-in shelving to help highlight a focal point within a space. This type of framing helps attract the eye in a subtle, grounded way but also amplifies the feature and makes it feel that much grander. For example, this fireplace is flanked by builtin open bookcases, painted white to become part of the millwork. Then, adding function to aesthetics, the homeowner uses these areas to store and display family photos, art, and collections. The secret to styling success is keeping your display simple and selective!

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 65

URBAN LIVING

Embrace the negative space. In interior design, the negative space in a room is just as important as the elements that fill the space. Negative space is blank space—those empty corners and bare walls that give your eyes a chance to breathe. Negative space also allows for more room so residents and guests can physically maneuver around furnishings and people and through traffic paths. Because most downtown dwellers are likely limited in square footage, the best way to achieve negative space and free up more of that valuable breathing room is by editing down your furnishings and unwanted items. If you’re working with an existing space (and stuff), evaluate each item and only keep the things that you really love and use. This really comes down to prioritization of your belongings and to free and clear living, with a minimal interior to match. Put simply, less stuff means more space. To get there, limit your furniture to essential items and multifunctional pieces; by multifunctional, I mean ensure you factor aesthetics into your decisions. Choose leggy furniture you can see under or through, such as a sofa with feet and chairs with slim legs. Also consider glass and chrome furniture and accessories that don’t block light or obstruct views. But you may be asking how to add negative space without leaving the room looking unfinished. As a design professional, I abide by purposeful design. This is how I approach every project, and not only in terms of the items I choose to add; I also consider the spaces left empty. Look at traffic patterns, and consider how you use each space. Then, furnish and accessorize only as needed. Periodically stand back and evaluate your composition to ensure you’re achieving a nice balance. Don’t overdo it. Remember: less is more.

66

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 67

URBAN LIVING

The secret to a great interior design is to balance what you want with what you really need. When it comes to compact urban homes, whether we’re talking condos, townhomes, or houses, they can all pack a big punch within a limited floor plan.

In fact, if you’re looking for character and charm, an urban home could be the way to go, often telling a story at every turn. At the same time, urban homes can certainly pose some challenges, such as smaller rooms and less light. But as they say, good things really do come in small packages. With a purposeful design plan and perhaps an experienced, professional designer guiding you through the home renovation dust, you too can make the most of your smaller home and maximize that motto. It may just take some thought and planning to uncover those hidden treasures.

COTTAGE DESIGN

Chic

BY DESIGN Written by LAURA HAY

The cottage is the epitome of a “great escape.” It’s become the North American dream: a getaway from the everyday, a retreat to relaxation and recreation, and a return to nature and a simpler way of life. It’s a place to unplug, unwind, and put your feet up. Often, that wooded, waterfront, or countryside haven is miles from home. But what if your great escape is in the urban jungle? Leave your worries at the door. You too can achieve sweet serenity, regardless of your physical location. Whether you’re building a brand-new home, renovating an existing one, or redecorating a room, here are some of my favorite ways to bring that coveted cottage lifestyle a little closer to home.

Photography by GILLIAN JACKSON Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 71

COTTAGE DESIGN

Materials

Materials are an effective way of expressing this distinctive style. In this case, I like using cottage-inspired elements that come directly from nature, such as natural wood, raw stone, and organic textiles like linen, cotton, and wool. These materials often evoke strong emotions that draw many to this decorating style— namely, feelings of being cozy, relaxed, comfortable, and welcomed. Wood floors are a common characteristic of cottage-style homes—informal and perfectly imperfect. Conveying a message of “No, don’t take your shoes off—just come on in,” wood floors seem to beckon to arriving residents and guests. All they need is a sweep and occasional polish to bring them back to their original glory. You can amp up the rustic, casual aesthetic charm by selecting a wide plank floor. Reclaimed species like hemlock and pine are beautiful. For new solid and engineered hardwood, European white oak is my top choice for its consistent grain and coloring, plus its wide range of stain options. Beadboard or shiplap wood paneling are common finishing options for cottage-style walls and ceilings. To avoid being swallowed up by a uniform wood finish, which can leave you feeling closed in, consider painting the shiplap or beadboard in a fresh hue that complements the natural wood in the space. Washed wood can also be incorporated to create a cozy, cabininspired look and feel.

Tip:

Wood furniture is the obvious choice for a cottage-style home, solidifying a relationship to nature and suggesting warmth and history through every dent and ding, which are not only accepted but welcomed. However, it’s not the only option. Achieve an eclectic, collected vibe by incorporating a few painted pieces, whether they’re metal or glass.

Beautiful Design Made Simple® | 75

COTTAGE DESIGN

Decor

Yes, decor is less of an investment than built-in items, but don’t discount its power or value. Accessories, art, accents—these seemingly small, individual elements combine to achieve a greater whole and the carefully considered cottage vibe that, if done right, comes off as completely carefree. Having many cottage designs under my belt, I can attest that a coat of paint can go a long way. When designing cottages (whether actual ones or homes inspired by them), I often complement the space by choosing organic materials with a natureinspired color palette. Whites, offwhites, and soft creams are the perfect base for that relaxed, rustic style that’s so popular. And with new trending hues for 2022, the move toward gentle green tones seems practically tailored to this cottage aesthetic—a perfect color to solidify one’s connection to nature. Underfoot, rugs bring warmth to bare feet and to the broader mood in the home. Source a vintage, “second-life” rug; a fun braided style; or a flatweave. Even very traditional styles featured in casual settings can gain new life and renewed appreciation. Last but not least, try incorporating some authentic or fun accents to underpin the cottage vibe and look. For example, find a vintage painting or a pair of antique skis or snowshoes to mount above the fireplace. Throw blankets, baskets, and unusual found objects or antiques are all wonderful additions. Use them to highlight focal points in the space, such as a window, fireplace, or entertaining area.

COTTAGE DESIGN

Focal Points

Although every home is different, many share two common focal points: the fireplace and the kitchen. But not all fireplaces and kitchens are created equal, and yours may need to be with countrified to suit your intended cottage aesthetic. Even in an urban setting, you can enhance a home’s cabin appeal by focusing some attention on the fireplace. Start by upgrading the unit itself. Depending on your budget and inclination to redecorate or renovate, you can replace your fireplace or give your existing one a fresh coat of paint and perhaps a new mantle in a warm wood finish Then, bring focus to your new fireplace by positioning your furniture around it. Highlight it with dedicated lighting or a great piece of art. The kitchen is another common focal point in many homes, particularly in cottages designed for socializing and entertaining family and friends. Ensure the kitchen maintains a consistent atmosphere in line with the rest of the home, particularly if it is open to the main living and dining area. Thankfully, you have plenty of opportunities to put natural materials front and center. We’ve already discussed hardwood flooring in the cottage, but it’s worth mentioning again, specifically in the kitchen. Run continuous hardwood floors through the entire home, including the kitchen. Doing this blurs the boundary between living areas and kitchen, making the entire space look larger and feel more cohesive. Complement your wood floor with wood cabinets and an organic backsplash, such as natural stone tile, or if you’re aiming for cottage chic (stress on chic), marble. Then draw the eye upward with open wood shelves that enhance the kitchen’s function and style. Use these to store your frequently used cooking essentials so they’re easily on hand, or reserve these prime spots for a few thoughtfully chosen decorative items, such as handmade pottery and live plants.

Cottage chic may be an overused term, but there’s a good reason people keep drifting toward this look, whether at their recreational property or principal residence. Much like the cottage lifestyle that inspires it, this decorating style is casual, comfortable, and carefree—and, in most cases, anything goes. At the end of the day, have fun and incorporate the materials, finishes, and pieces that inspire you to kick back and enjoy life. After all, this is meant to be your great escape from the daily grind and the stresses that come with it. With some inspiration, aspiration, and design planning and strategy, you too can enjoy that beloved lakefront vibe regardless of your physical geography.
