Carol Joy Holling Center Affiliate Site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Carol Joy Holling Camp, Conference & Retreat Center has received accreditation as an Affiliate Site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. This new accreditation comes as a result of intentional work by camp staff to diversify and expand the plantings on the property. Bud Dasenbrock, life member of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and friend of Carol Joy Holling Camp explains, “The accreditation is acknowledging our progress in plantings of specific specimens, collections and groupings. We have intentionally planted a variety of things in both landscaping and in native woodlands and prairies. Both types of plantings are very important to the sustainability of Carol Joy Holling Center as a place for guests to experience and enjoy the outdoors.” Dasenbrock served as the first president of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and is passionate about environmental education for youth and adults. Roger Maxon, Director/Site and Facilities at Carol Joy Holling Camp, hopes that this new accreditation will attract more volunteers. “As we grow in our understanding of what it means to be an Arboretum, we will need more help to plant and maintain our spaces,” he said. Now that this accreditation is in place, Maxon and Dasenbrock are looking to develop signage and edu-
cational materials for guests to better appreciate the plantings. Dasenbrock explains, “Having appropriate interpretation of the plants will open so many doors to environmental education opportunities for both summer campers and retreat guests.”

A week at Carol Joy Holling Camp affords young people many environmental education experiences, from planting and maintaining the garden to hiking the woods.
Connecting Campers to a Larger World This summer, campers at Carol Joy Holling Camp and Sullivan Hills Camp will grow in faith as they participate in the packaging of at least 101,000 Kids Against Hunger meals. In addition to the fact that nutrition will be provided to thousands in need internationally, regionally and locally, campers will learn more about their brothers and sisters in need. We pray they will be moved by the realization that they are serving as God’s hands in the world.
Campership Gifts Make all the Difference! Since 1992, NLOM’s board has had a policy that “no child will be turned away because of lack of funds.” In the last four years, 653 children have received Camperships to attend camp, an increase of 230%! Even though the number of campers requesting assistance has grown so much, our position remains unchanged. Requests for assistance range from $25 to $380 per child. Will you please consider making a gift to provide a child with a life-changing faith experience? Make a gift online at www.nlom.org or use the enclosed remittance envelope.
