I

’m very excited to bring you the August Issue of our IH Magazine, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it! In case

you’re new to Imtiaz Hussain Designs, I’ll take a moment to introduce myself.

I’m an interior designer with a passion for bringing my clients’ visions to life. I think design is a lot like storytelling: my aim is to create an evocative story from colour, texture, pattern, and form. Every project is a unique exploration of my client’s personality and aspirations. “I love what I do.”

I think any interior can be transformed into a place of beauty and soul.

Luxury design needn’t be exclusive. It’s something everyone has the right to enjoy. And that’s the ethos behind IH Magazine: I wanted to share some insights, products and ideas to help you create a beautiful home whatever your taste and whatever your budget.

9 CLEVER WAYS TO

STYLE A SMALL SPACE Whether you live in a busy family house or a compact studio flat, less space doesn’t have to mean less style! It is possible to work with the smallest rooms to create a home that’s truly unique. And you don’t have to compromise on comfort either.

Here are 9 clever ways to make a big impact with a small space.

CREATE THE ILLUSION OF HEIGHT AND WIDTH Features that draw the eye upwards make your room appear taller than it really is. Choose cupboards and bookshelves that graze the ceiling, and mount curtains as high as you can – this makes your windows look bigger, and creates a sense of luxury. If your home is on more than one level, a statement staircase can also give the illusion of height.

To make your space appear wider, go for wall-to-wall countertops or shelves, or a striking rug that extends the full length of your room.

CHOOSE RAISED FURNITURE Avoid furniture that hugs the floor, as this breaks up the space and makes the room seem smaller. Instead choose pieces that are raised from the ground on legs. This will open up the room and make it feel more spacious: ​ You can even go a step further with a loft bed or hanging chair - these are ideal for promoting an airy, uncluttered environment.

BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR LAYOUT Save space with furniture that has more than one function; for example a plush ottoman that will serve as storage, coffee table and extra seating for guests - or a countertop that does double duty as a study desk or dining area.

It’s also a good idea to invest in furniture that’s easy to move around, and can be folded away when not in use. Not only can you easily adapt the space to meet your needs, you’ll be able to play with new layouts, too. No more getting bored with the same arrangement!

USE GLASS AND MIRRORS It’s the most famous designer’s trick for a reason! Mirrors really do make your room seem bigger and brighter.

Using glass walls or doors are another way to open up a room, and increase the amount of natural light – which in turn makes your room feel spacious.

And consider investing in see-through furniture, which tricks the eye into thinking there’s more space than there actually is. Team with metallic finishes for a touch of luxury.

MAXIMISE YOUR VERTICAL STORAGE Vertical storage is your best friend if your home is small. Tall and narrow shelving takes up less floor space, while inbuilt or floating shelves take up none at all and can be customised to fit anywhere. Try to avoid cramming your shelves, unless you really have to!

Instead, leave some empty space to let your room breathe and draw attention to what’s on display.

Functional items can double as decorative elements in a small home when stored vertically. Add wall mounted hooks and racks to display kitchen utensils. Wall hooks can even

GET CREATIVE WITH EVERY CORNER Wasted space is more obvious in a small area, so get creative and find unusual ways to utilise every corner of your home. ​ Chic shelf desks can fit in the smallest alcove, and you might want to install a cosy reading nook or home office under your stairs. Think out of the box and run shelving above doorways.

If you’re stuck for ideas, take a few minutes to sketch a floorplan of your home, and consider the activities each area can be used for.

THINK LESS IS MORE Of course, you don’t want to swamp your room with furniture too huge for your small space, but a scattering of pint-sized pieces won’t look great either! The more floor space you can see, the larger your room appears, so for best effect add just a few statement pieces – they’ll have more impact and make your home look more spacious.

BE BOLD! It’s tempting to go for all neutrals in a small room, in an effort to make it look bigger. But you don’t have to back away from a bit of drama! Eyecatching colours can actually draw attention to what’s going on inside the room instead of its size.

Glossy dark walls can make a room appear larger, but if that’s not your thing, a splash of vibrant accent colour against a pale backdrop will give your home personality.

And if you do prefer a serene space, add warmth and visual interest by incorporating natural elements like wood, and cosy textures for a relaxed Scandi feel.

CREATE ZONES If you’ve very small living space which is contained to just a room or two, defining separate zones for relaxing, sleeping and dining will make it feel more ordered.

Choose dividers that let in plenty of light, like screens with cut out detail, or thread curtains. These take up less space than a solid wall, and add a touch of real glamour. Large rugs and bed canopies are also great way to define zones.

approached us to transform their Birmingham property into luxury 5 bed serviced accommodation. They wanted a chic, sophisticated design that offered a high level of comfort for their discerning tenants.

Serviced accommodation is a special type of luxury property that’s available for both short-term and long-term stays.

This type of property needs to be designed very carefully to provide a great living experience for professional tenants.

It should be equipped with everything needed for a pleasant stay.

Serviced accommodation often has an exclusive feel, reflected in the quality of furnishings, and also the visual appearance of the space.

Our design aims to create an exclusive modern retreat that’s sophisticated but also very inviting.

We chose a palette of sleek greys and warm creams for a relaxed but high-end feel. To give the property a contemporary edge we also added vibrant navy and copper accents.

We opted for a minimalist design

to create space in the property and promote a sense of calm. To give the property character, we sourced signature accessories like statement mirrors. These reflect the light and enhance the spacious feel.

We chose luxury soft furnishings to ensure quality and comfort throughout. Our design contrasts subtle and tactile textures, including crisp cottons and plush velvets to add visual interest.

If your open-plan space isn’t working for you, the good news is there’s no need to build walls or renovate. Follow these simple tips instead.

Open-plan areas can be a stunning asset to your home: bright, airy and great for promoting a social atmosphere.

But it’s tricky to get the layout of an open-plan right. Without clearly defined areas, an openplan can look cluttered and chaotic.

Design it first!

LIVING AREA

Before you start, take a step back and do a bit of planning. Decide which areas are used for which purpose, such as cooking, relaxing, eating or studying. Sketch out a floorplan of your space and section each area with imaginary walls. This way you’ll know exactly where your boundaries need to be.

Use L-shaped furniture Sectional furniture like L-shaped sofas are the perfect way to outline an area devoted to relaxation.
