A Magic Intelligent Hydrogel Wound Dressing Recently, scientists from Bath University has described a magic intelligent Hydrogel Wound Dressing. This dressing can switch on a fluorescent color when in contact with pathogenic wound biofilms. This dressing according to the scientists in this study is made of a hydrated agarose film in which the fluorescent dye containing vesicles were mixed with agarose and dispersed within the hydrogel matrix. This, helps doctors to identify bacterial infections effectively, thus taking corrective measures quickly especially for children who have burns. The researchers noted that this dressing might help save the patients’ lives. Burnt children are usually sensitive to bacteria infection for the immune system is not fully mature. Bacterial infection may block the wound healing, thereby children raised prolonged hospitalization. Sometimes left permanent scar, or even led to death in many cases. It’s always hard for the diagnose of bacterial infections if the dressing is not removed. This, however, often makes patients suffer from pains and have the risk of leaving scars. Just because of this, antibiotic use is often an effective protection before the infection. However, using antibiotic in the absence of infection may often induce the bacteria to have antibiotic resistance, which is a major challenge faced by the global health field.
