EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Kim Mayo

Imoved here from Greenville where I had been working for Greenville Utilities, which is also owned by those it serves. I moved to the coast in 2006, applied to BEMC, and was interviewed by Judy Gore, vice president of Customer Service at the time, along with several others. At the end of the interview she said, “It sounds like you speak our language,” and I was hired as a Member Services Representative for the Supply headquarters. Training for MSRs is extensive and ongoing, because we have to know all aspects of the business and the programs and services we offer. I spent some time in the Marketing Department, where I also learned a lot, and now work

I really enjoy my job because when someone calls with a problem, and they’re unsure how it can be fixed, I can get them the help that they need. That’s why it’s so important for to us to handle calls personally. It’s really satisfying being able to take the time to understand each member’s individual situation and suggest the programs and services that will best meet their needs.

I also enjoy handling the service orders that help new members get the power they need to their new homes. And cashiering is great, because I get to see the same people every month and get to know them. I like showing our members that they truly are our number one priority.

Ways to Unplug and Have Some Family Fun

è Have a living room campout with sleeping bags, ghost stories and flashlight hand shadows

è Have fun with sidewalk chalk – play hopscotch, create artwork, or draw a target with a bullseye and have a water balloon tossing competition

è Go through a cookbook together and pick a fancy meal to shop for and cook together

è Have family members interview each other, reporter-style, about their favorite music, book, hobby, place to visit, etc., and then take turns reporting over dinner

è Get a book on paper airplanes and make and fly them for height and distance

Do We Owe You Money?

As a member-owned electric cooperative, Brunswick EMC operates without a profit motive. After covering expenses and planning and building for the future, we periodically return revenue to the membership in the form of capital credits. These checks are mailed out generally every two years, and the formula for distribution is based on prior years of operation and member consumption. If a member who is owed capital credits has moved, and we don’t have an accurate address, their check is returned to us. You can go to bemc.org/capital-credits and click on Unclaimed Capital Credits to see if we are holding a check for you. Additionally, by law, we are required to periodically turn over, or escheat, unclaimed capital credits to the State of North Carolina.
