Safety: For the co-op to execute all these efforts, safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. As a testament to this commitment, the co-op has completed the NC Department of Labor’s Carolina Star Program recertification process. The program recognizes employers and employees who have implemented adequate safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates that meet the criteria for participation. In 2021, there was a 50 percent reduction in workplace injuries and worker compensation claims. By maintaining a healthier workforce, we were able to push our overall strategy forward in a major way.

Not only is safety something the co-op engaged in internally, but the co-op was very active in the community by providing safety demos to deliver a powerful message to emergency responders in its service territory.

Co-op continues to offer safety demos to area fire

departments. When the Roanoke team pulls up to a local fire department with a trailer equipped with a model electrical distribution system, they do so with a pack of hotdogs in hand and one thing in mind—potentially saving a life. This year, the co-op has visited several local fire stations with a model electrical distribution system, including poles, wires, and a transformer, to simulate realistic electrical hazards. Local stations that were visited included Lewiston-Woodville Fire Department, Murfreesboro Fire Department, Town of Ahoskie Fire Department, Ahoskie Rural Fire Department, and, most recently, Millennium Fire Department.
