THIS MONTH: Accessible Recreation
Warmer weather is creating more opportunities to get outside, whether for a walk around the block or a game with friends. Organizations like ACCESS of Wilmington are making sure everyone has that opportunity, regardless of ability. Read more about how the group is helping people with disabilities of all ages get out and get active. Also, we answer more reader questions about electric vehicles (part of an ongoing conversation about energy tech) on page 7.

From Our Readers
Calendar Question We miss the events in each section for each month. What happened?
Albert Proskey, Orlando. A member of Haywood EMC
Editor’s note: After putting our Carolina Calendar section on hold during the uncertainty of the pandemic, we’ve found event listing submissions to be slow to bounce back. Although we don’t have enough to bring the section back in our print version, you can find a listing of events by region (or submit your own) at carolinacountry.com/calendar.
Mysterious Sonker Origins I enjoyed the article “Save Room for Sonker” [about the Surry County Sonker Trail] (December 2021, page 34) and clipped it out. Going through recipes that I have printed out, I came across Versunkener Apfelkuchen (German Sunken Apple Cake). I wondered whether “sonker” could have been derived from German.
Susan Ferris, Durham. A member of Piedmont Electric
Editor’s Note: Susan did some searching online and did discover NC’s German connection in that region of the state (more information to that end is available at ncpedia.org/german-settlers). Some speculate its origins are from Scottish or ScotchIrish immigrants (sonkertrail.org/what-is-sonker), but sonker’s verifiable roots remain a mystery. Moss Maintenance Q: How can I kill weeds in my moss yard without hurting my moss? I dug them out last year, but they came back. They have clover-like leaves and a spindly yellow flower.

Missy Vorus, via carolinacountry.com in response to the article “Go Green With Moss” (August 2010)
A: It’s best to address weed issues early in the season. Many moss gardeners prefer to carefully weed by hand (tedious and time-consuming, though it can be a Zen experience). Other alternatives are to string-trim or mow weeds down before going to seed, or, if you are willing to use chemicals, apply Weed and Grass Killer (follow manufacturer’s directions). Try this method in a small area first, and don't apply when it has been extremely dry and mosses are already stressed.
