FEATURE ALENGA

MIDFIELDER | CAROLINA CORE FC

“As a player, it should not be comfortable.”

A journey that stretches halfway across the world, Alenga Charles continues to write his soccer story, and his latest chapter has brought him to High Point, North Carolina. Hailing from Kigoma, Tanzania, the 22-year-old midfielder has been part of Carolina Core FC since the inaugural season and has played a crucial role in the success that The Foxes have achieved.

Alenga never played in a formal academy; his early experiences in soccer came from local street teams in Tanzania before making the move to the United States at the age of 13. Prior to landing in High Point, Alenga played in the United Premier Soccer League with FC Congo AZ and in the North Premier Soccer League with FC Arizona.

“MLS NEXT Pro’s level is much higher compared to the leagues that I was in before. It’s much more competitive. The quality of players and the speed of play in MLS NEXT Pro are significantly higher.”

While playing with FC Arizona, Alenga met and formed a meaningful connection with FC Arizona Technical Director Andy Williams, who would later become the assistant coach of Carolina Core FC. It would be this connection that would take Alenga to the next level and play professionally.

“In my first year at FC Arizona, Andy Williams was my head coach. He told me to come try out for Carolina Core FC. I came to the tryout in 2023, and that’s where the team saw me, and that’s where I signed.”

The Tanzanian midfielder went on to start in 17 matches during Carolina Core FC’s inaugural season, making 18 total appearances. Now, in his second season at Truist Point Stadium, the 22-year-old has played in all 13 MLS NEXT Pro games so far and started 12 of them. Alenga knows that being a regular part of the starting eleven comes with pressure.

“There’s always pressure before the game, but once I get on the field, I’m fine. I just try to be myself and to be confident and play my game. I stay calm before matches by not thinking about the game too much and listening to music. I mostly listen to songs from Tanzania.”

The young midfielder has proven capable of rising to meet the pressure, as Alenga has maintained an impressive 92% pass accuracy over his first two seasons. He leads Carolina Core FC in pass accuracy so far in the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season among players with at least one start. He has also logged the fifth-most minutes this season in MLS NEXT Pro across the entire team and is the youngest of the five players who have done so.

Alenga has built strong friendships with his teammates at Carolina Core FC. During training, you can almost always see him with defender Jathan Juarez and midfielder Jacob Evans.

The trio constantly jokes around and poses for pictures together; their off-field chemistry has directly contributed to their on-field success.

“It helps a lot. I think with that kind of relationship, it’s easy to understand each other out on the field. You know what they are going to do next, which can lead to something happening.”

Off the pitch, Alenga taps into his more artistic side. One of his escapes from the beautiful game is drawing, which he has been doing for a couple of years.

“I mostly do pencil portraits. I learned and started doing them in high school. People used to pay me to do them, but now I just do it for fun.”

When asked if he had done any for the team, Alenga laughingly stated, “Some of the players have asked me to do it, but I don’t feel like doing it.”

The Tanzanian midfielder has learned many lessons beyond friendships and locker room banter. The league’s level is different, and Alenga understands that. Playing for Carolina Core FC has given him many new experiences, but the biggest lesson is the shift in his perspective on effort.

“As a player, you’ve got to put 100% every day into practice and in games. It should not be comfortable. You should always try your best to get to the next level.”

Comfort is the last thing that Alenga is looking for. He plays a big role on the field and dreams even bigger. His goal, like many other footballers, includes reaching the world’s premier soccer leagues and the biggest stages.

“My goal or wish would be to someday play for an MLS first team. Maybe I could go to Europe and play in the English Premier League or Spain’s LaLiga.”

As he continues to rack up minutes and experience, Alenga Charles undoubtedly has the potential to reach the high standards that he sets for himself. Calm under pressure, he has established himself as a key player and helps dictate the tempo of games. The young midfielder will need to continue his reliable and impressive performances as The Foxes inch towards the goal for this season—to finish in a playoff position.

Welcome to Carolina Core FC Academy

A groundbreaking initiative that is set to revolutionize youth soccer development in our region. We are proud to be the first non-MLS team to make our MLS Next Academy free for each player, aiming to break down the financial barriers typically associated with high-level youth soccer and provide young players with an unprecedented opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Operated under the Carolina Core Soccer Foundation, the Carolina Core FC Academy is committed to creating a level playing field where every child, regardless of their socioeconomic background, can chase their aspirations of a professional soccer career. Our academy’s revolutionary approach eliminates the pay-to-play model, ensuring that talent and potential, rather than financial means, become the primary factors in a player’s journey. This opportunity enables young athletes to compete against the best players in the country, in a league that has developed 90% of the United States Men’s National Team’s players.
