Sandy felt strongly that memory was what ultimately holds us together, that shared life and housing and poverty experiences become our shared memories, and from there forge bonds between people of different backgrounds and different ethnic groups here in our community. The DTES itself is what holds us all together, the mother that lights us all, and we are the stronger for it. They are trying to take our community away - from all of us - so we are all in this together; if we want to survive we have to be. And we do it together.

Sandy died in October of2010.

Old Man/OldMaple On May 6, 1977, Richard Si. Barbe Baker, "man ofthe trees," visited the home of Philip Paul' in the Tsartlip community of the Saanich Nation. Baker died in June 1982, at the age of 92.

He came to US, the old man, and talked of the death of trees.

"The life of a tree is our life," we said.

'The memory of a tree is our memory."

The old man knew this, he who had fought to save the Redwoods in California.

"There is an ancient Maple not far from here," we said. "Perhaps you'd like to ... " "Yes," the old man said.

"I'd like to meet that tree, for such trees carry wisdom with their years."

We brought some candles as it was night, and dark the starlit path.

With Philip helping the old man we went in single file a line offiretly lights sparks from the fire.

We walked as shadows, and the shadows of trees moved to our moving.

The night was alive with listening.

It was a long way but not far, , dark but the direction was clear.

The old man loved the earth.

We would take him to this tree which stood like a mountain, a church steeple, • a ladder between heaven and earth.

We formed a circle 'round the giant Maple, smiling a little, pleased that we were there; and-shy, too, awed at the love we 'gave and we received.

We Stood in a cave oflight, and the great tree held the night in her arms gently, as a mother.

Stars settled among her branches like birds.

"See where the tree has been scarred. by lightning," the old man said.

"It has overcome, though, and is more beautiful than ever.

So it is with us."

Some of the candles had gone out, and were re-lit from other candles, "This tree is my friend," the old man said.

"We are both made of stardust; we share the same Creator;

now the trees which have given us so much need our protection.

We must care enough ... care enough ... " and he touched his forehead to the tree.

We returned to the house, a line of firefly lights sparks from the fire the old tree standing like a mountain, a church steeple, a ladder between heaven and earth.

• Philip Paul was a Councillor and later Chief of the Tsartlip Band. He helped found the Southern Vancouver Island Tribal Federation, the Union of B. C. Indian Chiefs and the National Indian Brotherhood.

In 1967 he developed a Native Studies Program at the Institute of Adult Studies, later renamed Camosun College, and along with many other Saanich people, he helped to build their own Tribal School.

Philip died in December 1992.

Carnegie Patrons, Message #1 In light of the recent fentanyl crisis, the number of overdoses our Security staff are attending to has been increasing. As most of the incidents take place in the public washrooms & an immediate response is required, we have taken a number of proactive steps.

These steps include the following: Camegie is a recognized first-aid naloxone program facility. T.J;1is means we have naloxone kits on site.

Providing ongoing training to security staff to administer Naloxone.

Washroom doors are being refitted with new closures for easier access in the event of an emergency or overdose response. Until then, we have installed a temporary closing mechanism at the top of each door.

Security will increase their daily patrols/rounds throughout the building, with a focus on the washrooms to keep people 'safe. This may mean, security staff entering the washroom if they have good reason to think someone is in duress.

Additionally, we are hosting an information meeting

, for DTES community members and friends and family regarding the Fentanyl/overdose crisis. Service providers from VANDU, PHS, Fire, VCH and Carnegie Centre will speak regarding the response being made by first responders, front line staff and friends and neighbours. We will also seek feedback from the community regarding the impact of the crisis and suggestions for what further actions could be taken. Many people are making a huge effort to save lives and we want to come together to support each other and to share our response to this medical crisis.

The Sad Siren Song in the Downtown Eastside To Whom This All Should Be Concerned: My name is Tracey Morrison. I am an Ojibwe women who resides in the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, BC. I volunteer and work in this very diverse community for 15 years and will continue to do so. I acknowledge that I can live, work and play on these unceded territories belonging to the Coast Salish People. Having respect for the people on which territory I live on is a must and writing this letter is a must.

When I hear the sad song of sirens that ring in my neighbourhood every day, all day I am dreading on to hear the story if this person made it or not. This emergency crisis on Overdoses and the death toll here in this city I love so much is inconceivable, so hard to understand why can't this problem be solved or helped? Why isn't what we are doing, working? The Lights of emergency vehicle isn't what I want to see every block I want to see Christmas lights.

I believe that the War on the Poor has a lot to do about this. The laws need to change which is a pipe dream.

We as a society an residents of the DTES needs to ally together to do positive change. I know writing this letter is not going to do anything to change but for me it's a start. I am going to send this letter to people I know, organizations and levels of different stakeholders.

I am proud to be apart of The Naloxone Training at 501 Powell with the City. (230 trained) The Public Forum with the City at City Hall, Dec 8th, I do a lot of my own outreach on the street thru selling of my bannock usually in the evenings.

1 want to also acknowledge that all the unsung heroes in our community who are doing their part but ask yourself how can I help? Not just people who resides in the DTES but all of the Greater Vancouver and Canada.

All levels of government, all non-profits, BIA's of Vancouver, health authorities (VCH, FNHA etc.), VPD, housing of all kinds, etc. That is all I want for Christmas for all to ally together and Stop the Drug War, Stop the War on the Poor and to be able all to work together and help our people who are the most dis criminalized, stigmatized, and marginalized. Hives for Humanity are hosting beeswax candle-making along with the DTES Women's Memorial Quilt committee and VPL Digital Services, who are encouraging Carnegie locals to record a memory for the website, "Remembering our DTES Women" featuring the Women's Memorial Quilt As a Librarian, I highly approve of the Icelandic Christmas Eve tradition called "Jolabokaflod" or "Christmas Book Flood." Essentially, everyone gives each other a book and then they read all night. Here are some books that might make interesting gifts, or at least be worthy of borrowing: Game Ch angers: the Unsung Heroines of Sports History (2016) by Molly Schiot. This is a most beautiful book full of photos and stories about female athletes, coaches, and journalists who have overcome adversity to compete or promote women in sport. Every page is inspiring featuring motorcycle racers, Korean underwater "Sea Women," to bullfighters, tennis players, and boxers.

When Breath Becomes Air (2016) by Paul Kalanithi .

While the VPL "request" list is a bit daunting, the book is worth the wait. The author, a young neurosurgeon discovers he has advanced lung cancer & shares his thoughts on what makes life worth living in the face of death.

A Handmade Life: in Search of Simplicity (2007)

by William S. Coperthwaite. If you know someone who loves making things with their hands and living in a simple way, operthwaite's wise way of being will resonate. He experiments with creating hand tools, making shelter and furnishings from wood, and he challenges mainstream living.

Sing for Your Life: a Story of Race, Music, and Family (2016) by Daniel Bergner. For a musician, especially an opera singer to perform with New York's Metropolitan Opera would be a lifetime dream. Bergner's story, as an African American opera singer who overcame childhood violence and poverty makes the accomplishment even more wonderful.

The Year in Review from the Carnegie Learning Centre We had a wonderful year all in all. One on One tutoring, computer help, help out with government applications, Chinese computer tutoring, resume help, writing workshops - geez we do it all in this place.

Every year about 8,550 volunteer hours are devoted to the learning centre by our dedicated volunteer contingent. For the summer holidays we are totally volunteer run while staff takes their much deserved break.

Lucy and Betsy are much loved and their leadership is very much appreciated by students and tutors alike.

The year started off with our Chinese New Years celebration. Every colour and kind of food is brought in by our Chinese Students. We tell new year's stories and have a lot of fun. This is the biggest holiday of the year for many of our students and we love the colour and traditions that this celebration brings us The next event we celebrated this year was St Patrick's Day. Our resident decorator and Sign Language Instructor, Videha, constructed a giant leprechaun with a hole in its face for us to take pictures of each other as little green men!. Such fun we had that morning. ~ Lucy and Videha In the spring we applied for a Small Neighbourhood Grant to hold an event called "Poetry in the Park". About 60 of our students, tutors and friends of the Learning Centre went to Crab Park on a cloudy spring day. Everybody read their own poetry or stories while they enjoyed a hearty lunch of baked chicken, potato salad and watermelon galore. These are some pictures from the event:

And then it was summer and our volunteers stood up as usual to keep the LC open all summer.

Before we knew it, summer was over and school was back in session. It was great to have Betsy and Lucy back to get us organized for the fall.

We had two events for the Heart of the City Festival this year. We held a writing workshop with the Invisible Heroes group on November 3rd and an event called Learning Centre Live on November 5th. We had poetry. skits, singing and digital storytelling .. Both events were very well received by the festival-going public this year plus we all had a lot of fun putting them together. ~ ~John, Johnny and Gilles reading their poetry at Learning Centre Live We just had our annual Holiday Party this week and once again we wrapped up our year in great style .'

We realized that our Learning Centre has had this holiday party every year for 18 years and we hope to continue this tradition for many years to come!

C.~H'r .w!tlT The Provincial election is coming up this spring, but we still don't know what opposition parties like the New Democratic Party (NDP) will do to address the unprecedented housing crisis for low-income people.

Our Homes Can't Wait held a Town Hall meeting on Dec 14 with two NOP MLAs - Melanie Mark & David Eby with the objective of putting housing and homelessness on the election agenda.

This year saw record high homelessness in the Downtown Eastside, with over 1000 people living on the streets and in shelters in our neighbourhood. The Downtown Eastside is now scattered with tents and smaller tent cities, as people struggle to survive without homes, shelter and on abysmally low welfare rates. As a result of government inaction and the criminalization of homelessness, homeless people have half the life expectancy of other BC residents. 'let the recent housing announcement by the provincial government would only house about 100 more low income people in the Downtown Eastside if rents in all the new units are at welfare/pension rate, At the same time, we continue to lose SRO hotel rooms as gentrification pushes up rents. This year the city's lease ~n the Quality Inn will also expire, effectively removmg 157 rooms from the affordable housing list.

The housing crisis has never been worse, and we need all political parties to commit to real measures to address the housing crisis. This includes rent control 10,000 social housing units per year with at least 10 social housing sites in the Downtown Eastside and measures to improve and save the SRO hotels in our neighbourhood.

This is what the bookmark sized card said that I was handed on Wednesday November 30 while gathered with my friends at our weekly Firestarters writing group in the Learning Centre (except the subtitle which is mine). One ofCarnegie's security people politely asked if we were interested in this gathering which was just about to start downstairs in the theater.

We decided to go ,more out of curiosity & hunger (we had just discussed our lunch plans a couple minutes before; lunch is a ritual together after we write).

On the invitation, there was a picture of the VPD chief, Adam Palmer in full crisp clean uniform sporting a rather congenial smile. Below is the time and place. No agenda, no particular subject, just simply "Lunch With the Chief'.

Downstairs we were escorted to a table, given a ticket for a prize draw and sat at a table adorned with white tablecloths peopled like the others in the room with VPD officers in uniform and plainclothes and us 'common' folks in our unique uniforms.

We were served fresh fat sandwiches, Greek salad & coffee, tea, water or pop. Plus a nice fresh fruit plate was put on the tabJe later on that was quite a hit.

The atmosphere was friendly, there were introductions, pleasant conversation, the odd 'cop' joke here and there and I even noticed some police exchanging contact information with some of us there.

Just before the food was served a First Nations elder shared some words of wisdom and reminded us all of the way of his ancestors--how the spirit of community in all relations was simply the way it was, period.

After we had eaten the Chief let us know the 'agenda' of this day and announced that 2 of the 3 speakers were soon to take the floor. And that it was 2 women from the Urban Native Youth Association. Good, I thought: the youth, our future.

The first speaker, Dena Klashinsky, Executive Director of the association, spoke a bit about the UNY A its progress and community connections with police and other services. And she talked about future plans of building a new center and over one hundred affordable social housing units at the corner of Commercial and Hastings.

The young woman with her, Leila Williams, is a Youth Board member belonging to the Association for --

12 years and said glowing and positive things of her involvement there. She talked of her own goal to get on staff there as her role in a career in some important capacity.

The last speaker to take the mic was another First Nations elder named Rose. She fearlessly shared some of her personal story of being on the streets and all the tough things that accompany being a poor and often homeless user of substances And she also shared rising above that and making a movie about violence towards women. I personally was touched by her closing words which were--"We must share our strengths with all down here. We are all brothers and sisters.

This is our community and we must care for one another in order to be and stay united and strong" The Chief then took the floor again and drew a couple dozen numbers for some treats which was a nice little bonus. In closing he simply stated that is their job to do their best to keep us all safe, stay connected to the people and organizations to be able to help one another grow in strength and show our youth the importance of this.

In summary, the gathering was geared (as the First Nations elder said at the start) simply towards the 'spirit' of community. Sharing and sustenance provided in a friendly manner by our Vancouver Police from a neutral position as genuine people who understand and are receptive to the needs of us humans especially in this 'hood' we call the downtown eastside. Past, present and future were examined and the youth were given an excellent example of how they need to act as future leaders.

And, as the subtitle of this article states, "true religion at Carnegie theatre" this is a perfect example of what took place-here this day. The word religion itself; is derived from the Latin language, as much English is and means simply-- TO CONNECT. J h J k' o nny awors

Same City-Hall Bullshit, Different Committee: CEDSAC does not want your Input!

By Joey, Eh? The CEDSAC - Community Economic Development Strategic Action Committee - keeps pretending it wants input from those of us who live here in the DTES. It seems every couple of weeks I get approached from one representative of the committee or other, encouraging me to take an active part by contributing to the deliberations, attending the meetings, making suggestions that will "improve" the neighbourhood, etc etc. The urgency behind this push, and I know they are asking pretty much any DTES resident (I'm not that important, in other words, not the only one they're asking) is because then they can claim just like in the LAP (Local Area Plan) - that they "consulted" with the people whose neighbourhood is being gentrified out of existence. This effectively lets them off the hook because now they can claim that they listened, that they "consulted" with us, "but nothing concrete came of it" for the simple reason that all our suggestions are in opposition to their already decided-upon strategies. The developers, the greedy entrepreneurs, the Strathcona Business Improvement Association, the realtors, and City Hall itself - none of whom actually live down here - have already made their plans, and their plans have no room for us.

Latest evidence of this? There was a meeting at City Hall last week where deputations from the committee and other interested parties were present to hear the report authored by Wes Regan and make presentations of their own. Everybody's presentation was recorded by digital camera except the two representatives from the low-income community.

Can you say blatant disrespect and deliberate noninclusion? Sure you can. They fucked us on the LAP and they are in the process of fucking us with CEDSAC, and the Emperor with No Clothes keeps asking us to join the party .

25 the carnegie newsletter has helped save my life I fled toronto for the downtown eastside as though all the furies in my life were chasing me and I began living here in 1986 not long after Paul Taylor published the first issue and Paul was the first person I met who not only encouraged my writing but inspired and befriended me and allowed me to work on the newsletter and since I'd never known real community or home the newsletter and all the knowledgeable writers and contributors who entered the newsletter office taught me about community about our unique and amazing shared history of resistance our fierce committed activists the brilliant satirical and imaginative artists and the truth-talking words of our many poets and it was through this incredible activity I discovered and was welcomed into a precious community and Paul Taylor, Sandy Cameron and others Imet possessed and exemplified the vital and wondrous qualities of our community while the newsletter has insured the communication of information so important to us all for 25 years an accomplishment of fortitude courage and dedication I can scarcely imagine Paul is and has been my friend in so many ways ever since I first entered the carnegie centre and I have beeruglad when Paul and Lisa attended readings I've done and performances with bands in public venues to speak of the newsletter as the most important publication I know of and Paul Taylor the most extraordinary editor and fearless defender of our community with his writing Iwas at my last gasp when I arrived here and the newsletter introduced me to a life & place & friends never previously conceived or believed possible I could not be more grateful Bud Osborn

Report: Canada's sex work laws have led to sweeping criminalization of sex workers

.The :eport's analysis of these Criminal Code provisions I~ the PCEPA found that the legislation has resulted I~ri~eeping criminalization of the sex industry, threatening the physical and economic security at sex workers, even though they are immunized from prosecution in certain circumstances.

"When the Supreme Court of Canada delivered its decision in Bedford, the previous federal government had the choice to remove the unconstitutional provisions or introduce new criminal laws," said Brenda Belak, report author and sex work campaigner at Pivot Legal Society. "They chose the latter, to disastrous & tragic effect. Our new federal government now faces their own choice: repeal these laws or fight to protect them when a constitutional challenge is launched."

According to the report, the PCEPA violates sex workers' rights to freedom of expression and association, security of the person, and equal treatment under the law. In addition, the report concluded that under PCEPA, sex workers: - continue to fear arrest - focus on avoiding detection instead of on safety - fear law enforcement, inhibiting their access to the justice system - cannot legally negotiate consent to conditions of sexual services' - face barriers to working indoors and working collectively - are excluded from workplace protection regimes - continue to experience stigma and discrimination The report urges lawmakers and police to work with sex workers to repeal laws that criminalize sex work and use existing laws to prosecute perpetrators of violence.

However, soon the weather turned so cold that he reluctantly started to fly south. In short time ice began to form on his wings and he feJl to earth in a barnyard, almost frozen. A cow passed by and crapped on the little sparrow. The sparrow thought it was the end. But, the manure warmed him & defrosted his wings. Warm and happy, able to breathe, he started to sing. Just then a large cat came by and, hearing the chirping, investigated the sounds. The cat cleared away the manure, found the chirping bird and promptly ate him.

The moral of the story: I. Everyone who shits on you is not necessarily your enemy.

2. Everyone who gets you out of shit is not necessarily your friend.

It's something to raise a few eyebrows, maybe give pause to whatever preconceptions someone might have about tenacity, if nothing else. 3 decades is how long I've been hanging around, being an editor of this paper. The trade-off has been not looking tor a job, tor doing something for someone who'd think it profitable to pay me for doing what they want. There's reaJly not much caJl for someone with both physical limitations in balance, manual dexterity, coordination, handeye correlation and other stuff and a mental state that has been officially diagnosed and unofficially borders on aberration.

Okay, enough of the intimate details ...

The Newsletter first published on August 15, 1986 and the first editor who was here on a UI To-up program, stayed until his UI ran out in the 3rd week of November. There was no December 1st issue in '86 but it wasn't that hard to do and a few of us carried on with December 15th being the first edition where I was acting as editor.

It would be highly disrespectful to make a synopsis of 30 years of work in a few paragraphs. From the perspective of access, every issue is online, with each

individual's work available to whomever. The Public Library has the actual newsletters archived, the City Archives has every issue and there is a complete index available on the web at camegienewsletter.org for you who can navigate through "Search ... " It's heartening when *a grant is obtained to make a book of some of the best from the first 15 years and it's published in 2003:

The Heart of the Community Edited by Paul Taylor Published by New Star Books; *a phonecall from the owner of The History Group, a company that chronicles the paper trail, activities, and documentation of its clients, saying she/they want to do some volunteer work. The first thing out of my mouth was "I'd like an index of the Carnegie Nwsltr!"

(Getting a grant for $30K to pay someone to do 6-9 months' work hadn't really panned out.) She employed six people, each with degrees in History, Social Work, Urban Geography, Computer Science, Political Science etc. and said "We can do that(!!)." All came to Camegie, bringing all equal number of graduate students in their respective fields, and said they'd create a database identical to a University Library's, scan every issue into it, categorise each piece of poetry or writing, and make the whole thing accessible & searchable. Each person took part of the archive and . off they went. The result was amazmg. *the Camegie Association is a non-profit society and eligible for a Vancouver Foundation-sponsored Intern program whereby non-profits could adverise jobs or projects to active students to help them do stuff that none had money to pay for. I asked for some genius to create a website that was user-friendly, that could host each issue as it came out, that could incorporate the stuff that the History Group had done (but not updated since '08), make the work of individuals available in separate files, make the whole thing searchable and open to anyone. Enter Sean, who knew what to do, where to look for the right platforms, found out who to contact about essential aspects, did much more than the posting called for and there is now one of the best websites going. *there's recognition of the myriad efforts and energy given over these 3 decades at the Heart of the City Festival, and the inclusion of the Masthead in the beautiful mural by Richard Tetrault called Living on Shared Territory.
