Black & Lit Book Club ONLINE: March 11, 6:00–7:00 PM Hosted by Claudia Love Mair, Carnegie’s Kentucky Black Writers Collaborative (KBWC) Coordinator, Black & Lit Book Club features new books by Black Kentucky writers. Cozy Horror & Subgenres with Darian Bianco Thursday, January 25, 5:30–7:30 PM • $35 ONLINE: An internet-wide debate was sparked last year when a podcast innocently mentioned a brand of horror that was labeled “cozy.” Since then, the existence of the sub-genre has caused controversy, and called all sub-genres into question. This course will broadly focus on the Cozy Horror debate, but will also explore sub-genres such as Sweetweird, Noblebright, Hopepunk, and Squeecore. We will discuss: how did sub-genres come to be? What does the creation of sub-genres mean for the writing industry? And why does Cozy Horror make people so mad? Darian Bianco holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Bluegrass Writers Studio and a certificate from the 2022-2023 Carnegie Center Author's Academy, and her novel-in-progress Chatter was one of five winners for issue six of Novel Slices, published in August 2023. Flash Fiction with Gavin Colton Tuesdays, January 30–March 19, 5:45 –7:15 PM • $112 The great writer Yasunari Kawabata described his shorts as “palm-of-the hand” stories because they were so small, they could fit in the palm of your hand. Flash fiction is a complete story with a short word count. In this workshop, we will study the art and craft of flash fiction by studying successful examples and developing our own stories of 500–1000 words. Gavin Colton's recent short stories have appeared in the the Appalachian

Stories of Your Life with Sylvia Lovely Wednesdays, February 7–28, 5:30–7:00 PM at the Carnegie Center • $56 Reading event at the Carnegie Center on February 28 ONLINE: Join Sylvia Lovely for a three-part seminar series on how to write the stories of your life. From cave wall hieroglyphics to great literary works, we are hard-wired to describe and understand our lives and the times in which we live through stories. Writing Memoir/Writing History with Sallie Bingham Friday, April 26, 4:30-7:30PM, & Saturday & Sunday, April 27 & 28, 11:00 AM–2:00 PM • $84 I believe that the genre of memoir, somewhat overused now, can be refreshed and made more relevant by considering the fact that when we write memoir we are in fact writing history. Especially as women, we have access to the forgotten or ignored cracks and crannies of life. We rely on research, especially with family documents and photographs—wills, letters, news stories, obituaries—of people "of no importance" whose crucial stories are so often left out of official histories. Sallie Bingham published her first novel sixty years ago and has written and published regularly since then. It is her vocation and avocation. Her most recent books are The Silver Swan: In Search of Doris Duke (biography, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2020), and Little Brother (memoir, Sarabande Press 2022). GRADES 9–12 My Teen Life with Jonathan Scott Thursdays, March 21–April 25, 4:30–5:30 PM • FREE Everybody’s life is full of stories: big and small. If you've ever listened to the Moth Radio Hour or the Moth Podcast, you already know the power and fun of personal storytelling. Popular among college students and young adults, the stories we tell in this class aren't traditional tales, folktales, or stand-up comedy. They are part of our shared human existence. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes ordinary and seemingly insignificant but always honest, authentic, and real. In workshop sessions, we will learn to find the experience we need to tell, develop it into a story structure, and learn how to present it orally to an audience in a supportive and fun atmosphere. We will celebrate with an event where we tell our stories to an audience in the first person, on stage, and without notes. Jonathan Scott has taught workshops and presented both live and online personal storytelling events in North Carolina and Kentucky since 2018. Screenwriting for Teens with Rebekah Strain Mondays, January 22–April 1, 4:00–6:00 PM (no class February 19 & March 25) • FREE Screenwriting is the foundation of every film and television series out there; you could have the best cast, best editing, best directing, but without a solid script, all is lost. In this expansion of the Camp Carnegie class, students will learn about story beats through Save the Cat, how to properly format a screenplay, and craft a feature screenplay or TV pilot.
