Becoming an Outdoor Writer with Bill Carman Saturday, August 24, 10:00–2:00 PM • $70.00 LONG: Outdoor Writing as a genre, can take many forms. It can be creative nonfiction (Steven Rinella), fiction (Ernest Hemingway), or combinations of both (Norman Maclean). The genre can include book-length essays, novels, weekly newspaper columns, and the most common, magazine stories. The market is extensive.

The outdoor industry adds $70 billion to the American economy, and the people spending that money enjoy reading about the object of their passion. This class is designed to help writers produce stories and books that will enter that market and to assist experienced writers in improving their skills. This class will encourage open dialogue and sharing writing and writing experiences. Writing the Dystopian Landscape with H Dietrich Saturday, June 19–July 30, 3:30–5:00 PM • FREE

GRADES 9–12: From Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series to AJ White's debut novel Hell Followed With Us, YA dystopian and post-apocalyptic fiction is a useful tool for us to think about the world we inhabit and the challenges we face as a society. This class is centered around teens creating their own dystopias and using tropes associated with the genre (everything from AI to evil corporations to kids surviving in the wilderness) to explore ideas of inequality, community, and resistance. FOR ADULTS: Reading is an essential skill for success. As a parent, guardian, or teacher of young children, there are simple ways you can help children become better readers. The presenter will engage participants in learning the "7 Keys to Comprehension" that will help your kids "read it and get it." This class will be designed for adults working with children ages 3-11. The goal is to engage participants in research-based ways to help children enjoy reading and learn to become better readers.
