Pens & Needles: Our Story Stitched Together Friday, September 22, 5:00–8:00PM Illustrator Bryce Oquaye and Fashion Designer Samantha Moore present a collaborative and interactive art exhibition. Both artists previously served as Camp Carnegie instructors; Oquaye led “Pens Paper and Rocket Punches,” and Moore led “Stitching the Self.” Oquaye and Moore empowered their students to confidently explore new pathways of self-expression. Student work will be on display alongside each artist’s own designs. Attendees are encouraged to participate in this unique creative experience. Light refreshments will be provided.

Women of Valor, Women of Faith Reading September 23, 6:00PM Join us on Saturday, September 23 at 6:00PM for one night of six powerful voices. The Kentucky Black Writers Collaborative and St. Peter Claver Catholic Church will elevate and amplify the words women of faith, featuring readings by Eugenia Johnson Smith, Angela Allen Johnson, Cynthia Allen Shelby, Nita B. Clarke, Charliese Brown Lewis, and Claudia Love Mair. The performance will take place at St. Peter Claver’s new sanctuary located at 485 W. 4th St., Lexington, KY 40508.

Exploring Our Monsters with Darian Bianco Thursday, November 9, 5:30–7:00PM • $35 Oftentimes, a monster in a story is a “recycled” version of one we’ve encountered before: a fresh kind of vampire, werewolf, witch, etc. Yet no matter how much time goes by, and how many monsters we meet, we seem to never get tired of them. Why is that? This course will explore the history of some of the most beloved monsters, track how they’ve changed and evolved over the years, look at examples in a variety of media, and wrap-up with a writing activity to explore your own monster. NONFICTION Hermit Crab Essays with Lucy Jayes Wendesdays, September 13–October 18, 5:30–7:00PM • $84 The hermit crab essay is a nonfiction essay in which the writer adopts an existing form to contain their writing (think: to-do lists, instruction manuals, dating profiles, and more). In this class, we will read examples of the hermit crab essay, dissect their mechanics, and uncover their truths. We will produce and workshop our own hermit crab essay that uses an unexpected form to examine our own experiences. Lucy Jayes holds an MFA from the University of Kentucky and was the winner of the Betsy Owen Combs Recruitment Award in 2021, the MFA Award in Creative Nonfiction in 2022, and the Fourth Genre Multimedia Essay Contest in 2023 for a hermit crab essay that analyzed her choices in relationships in the form of a Choose-Your-OwnAdventure game. Storytelling: The Time of My Life with Jonathan Scott Thursdays, September 21–October 19, with reading event on October 26, 5:30–7:00PM • $70 If you've ever listened to The Moth Radio Hour or The Moth Podcast, you already know the power and fun of personal storytelling. The stories we tell at The Time of My Life aren't traditional tales, folktales, or stand-up comedy. They are part of our shared human existence. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes ordinary, but always honest, authentic, and real. In workshop sessions, we will learn to find the experience we need to tell, develop it into a story structure, and learn how to present it orally to an audience in a supportive and fun atmosphere. The end of the workshop will culminate in an event open to family, friends, etc. and a chance for all who complete the workshop to tell their story live to an audience. Becoming an Outdoor Writer with Bill Carman Saturday, October 21, 10:00–2:00PM • $56 "Outdoor Writing" as a genre, can take many forms. It can be creative nonfiction (Steven Rinella), fiction (Ernest Hemingway), or combinations of both (Norman Maclean). The genre can include book-length essays, novels, weekly newspaper columns, and the most common, magazine stories. The market is extensive. The outdoor industry adds $70 billion to the American economy, and the people spending that money enjoy reading about the object of their passion. This class is designed to help writers produce stories and books that will enter that market and to assist experienced writers in improving their skills. Writing What Is: A Writing Circle for BIPOC Womxn - Fall Session 2 with LeTonia Jones & Tanya Torp ONLINE: Saturdays, November 18–December 16, 10:00–12:00PM • FREE CALL 859-254-4175 EXT. 21 TO REGISTER • Limited to 15 Participants The purpose of this circle is to offer a safer space (because there is no truly safe space) for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) womxn to write and share our truths. It will also serve to build a strong BIPOC womxn’s writing community. Each session will include writing prompts, time for sharing, and encouraging feedback from classmates. One week will also feature writing instruction by a professional BIPOC womxn writer. LeTonia Jones lives in Lexington. She is a small business owner, writer, and guest columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader. She uses writing as a personal tool for healing and growth.

Currently, she is working on collections of poetry and personal essays. Tanya Torp is an agent for social change and has spent her career engaging in community-based initiatives as convener, speaker, trainer, writer, and consultant. Both LeTonia and Tanya are graduates of the Carnegie Center Author Academy.
